Ratings: Katie Holmes on 'Eli Stone' has mixed results for ABC

Categories: Ratings, TV Biz, TV Ratings

Elistoneratings_l_2 Katie Holmes’ return to TV couldn’t save ABC’s Eli Stone from the expected decline in ratings after last week’s premiere, but it did cushion the blow. While most shows lose about 15 to 20 percent of viewers between their first and second episodes, Eli was down only 3 percent (8.5 million people tuned in to watch Holmes warble Duke Ellington yesterday versus last week’s 8.8 million). That said, things weren’t all good for the Eli: Of the 9.7 million viewers that put it on at the beginning of the hour, 2 million changed the channel (or just shut it off) by the end. Eli also held on to only 47 percent of the viewers from its lead-in, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars results show.

Dancing, on the other hand, faired much better. Its 8 p.m. recap episode bested last week’s Opportunity Knocks (which aired on ABC in the same time slot) by 4 million viewers to total out at 9.3 million. Then, after losing the 9 p.m. slot last week to CBS’ freshman wonder, The Mentalist, Dancing’s results show climbed back on top yesterday with 16 million viewers (an 11 percent gain from the previous episode’s 14.4 million).

Nevertheless, CBS once again stole Tuesday night. NCIS nabbed 17.1 million viewers (down slightly from last week’s 17.9 million), making it the evening’s top-rated series. The Mentalist showed steady gains at 15.3 million (compared to last week’s 14.9 million), and Without a Trace also improved, averaging 11.6 million viewers (up from 11 million). Overall, the Eye ended the evening in the No. 1 spot with an average 14.6 million viewers.

Over at Fox, House (12.9 million) added a few watchers to last week’s 12.8 million, while Fringe showed a slight decline (snagging 9.1 million viewers versus the previous episode’s 9.5 million).  At NBC, 8 p.m.’s The Biggest Loser: Families (7.3 mllion) and 10 p.m.’s Law and Order: SVU (9.4 million) garnered nearly the same viewership numbers as last week. Finally, The CW’s 9 p.m. Privileged (1.5 million) showed expected gains over last week’s rerun (1.2 million), while declining 35 percent from its previous new episode (2.3 million). Also on The CW, 9 p.m.’s 90210 rerun (1.3 million) scored nearly 30 percent below the previous week’s repeat (1.8 million). Thankfully, new episodes begin again next week.

(Part 2)
. I have cleared “Eli Stone” from my TiVo and it will not record it again.

I think that there must be a lot of people that feel the same way because the show lost about 2 million viewers after the opening.
Remember the predictable left leaning story line in this episode I was talking about.
It’s obvious that once the public realized what was being forced on them (again) they tuned out. (Note to ABC, want to save this show, replace you writers with ones that have some original ideas)
I made the mistake and watch the full show to see if the nose dive could be averted.
I was wrong.
I will not make that mistake again.

Tired Of PC Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

I have had it with this spin that the left leaning writers/produces are forcing on the public. Frankly it is pretty lazy writing to do it anyway because it’s completely predictable when employed. As soon as I understood that the story arc was about someone wanting to bury a soldier without the honors he deservers, I knew how it would end.
I mean really, did anyone think it would end otherwise.
So I maintain that it’s just plain lazy writing to force this crap on the public like some kind of indoctrination to the proper way of (left) thinking. And please don’t reply that there are a lot of soldiers that feel the same negative way about the country or its leaders. I know that is not true via first hand knowledge. There may be a few but it’s an extremely small group compared the true heroes that serve our country everyday.

There are a lot of good shows out there that do not have this kind of lethargic intellectual pursuits and I for one am done with this one. I have cleared “Eli Ston

While I am not a fan of Katie Holmes, I did appreciate her guest star role as part of a main storyline rather than just a cameo. I give her singing and dancing a surprising cheer, but it didn't make me into a new fan. I love the new episodes of "Eli Stone," but I hope theres some humor ahead for Eli, especially dealing with his aneurysm's return and now his potential love interest leaving the country.

I love this show. KH was great. I hope Eli stays on for a long time.

ruth Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Katie was fresh and lively but the show was boring especially the usual antiwar wreck from Hollywood.

alaska Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

3% down is quite impressive when shows usually suffer a gigantic blow after the premiere. Katie is a star and a huge draw that proof is her non musical play right now no.1 in New York also she gives great sales for fashion merchandise to women that wonna emulate what she wears. They put Katie way too late when Eli Stone is already on Hospice Care and no matter a Katie Holmes,Clooney,Cate Blanchett or Meryl Streep cant save shows like this.

hugh Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Thanks Sharon and Joyce because I never heard about the show nor Im aware about Katie Holmes tv return.
She looks amazing and her performance was amazing as well. Any word if she is returning to the series?

David Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Eli Stone is a must watch for me. But it is playing against two very popular old shows. Too bad because Eli Stone is certainly more original that either of them. I like Without a Trace and Law and Order:SVU but it's Eli Stone that offers the surprises each week.

Sharon Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

here's the link to the episodes online:

http://fep.abc.go.com/fep/player?src=abccomjs&show=93514

if this doesn't work, the webpage is abc.go.com; there's a tab for full episodes, select Eli Stone. Good thing here is minimal commercial breaks (30 seconds) and total time 43-45 minutes. Amazing how much time commercials take up when watching live.

When did we get fooled into believeing that katie homes was a star the would bring in ratings. She was a silly teen star that just happen to marry so aging movie star in a mid life crisis... She is and really never be a movie star and should get used to more lack lust special tv appearances.

joyce Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Where can I watch the entire episode online??????

Anitamargarita Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I LOVE Eli Stone. Aggiegirl, it was kinda lame, but the vision DID have a little something to do with the case - Dr. Ellington was the doctor who looked the other way from Jr's heart condition when Major Dad was trying to get his son enlisted. The song in the vision was by Duke Ellington. I understand why you forgot. It WAS kind of half ass.

BruceOhio Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

This second season is missing alot of the it's First season appeal for me. Sadly to say. I know it's only been 2 episodes but I have been feeling that something is missing from this show...and yesterday I realized what it was. What's missing? The quirkiness and humor. Okay maybe it's not missing...but it has been toned down by 80%. The characters last season were fun (even during serious topics), but fun and quirky and bounced off of one another. The personalities this season have been so toned down that the humor is falling really short and the writers are letting the seriousness of Eli's condition become more dramatic. I miss the bouncing and catty remarks between Maggie and Eli, Eli and Patty, and I really missing the brotherly bond between Nate and Eli. I mean it's there but last season they acted more like brothers...ribbing and teasing. This season so far...they act like siblings who get along for the sake of getting along.

Katie instantly pulled me in with her character while till this day I dont like Natasha Hendrige so much. The acting of Katie was memorable.Grace and Eli positively smolders and their connection is real. All I can say is ohh la la on the singing and dancing of Holmes.

Nancy Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

Im betting that with no more Katie next week the Eli Stone show will tumble in the ratings!

Cami Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

I am not a fan of Katie Holmes, but I have to admit I thought she did a great job last night. She has a nice, light touch and a natural feel to her acting, as well as a gentle chemistry with Miller. The only thing I do not get about this season is Taylor's over the top hostility toward Eli. What's up? When last we saw she was crying over his near-demise and now she hates his guts? Was a critical scene cut?

graeme Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

I just caught the opening and a few scenes throughout with Katie...but she was fantastic in this. Was totally impressed. Had a complete "star" quality to her. Totally jumped off the screen.

Chelsea Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

I adore Eli Stone, and even though parts of last night's episode were simply charming. The Katie Holmes portion was off for me, and not because of the Tom Cruise of it all, it was more the loss of Eli's humor, the joy of the episodes past, and the music throughout as an inner voice in the head of Eli. It was a bit off last night, but even so, I'd take it over 90 percent of what I see on television now. It's hard to make a bad episode of Eli Stone. It's just too unique and charming.

Anne Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

If I wanted to see a 59 year old woman (Katie post-Tom brainwash) act, then I would watch someone with talent like Meryl Streep on Broadway.

Deborah Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 06:43 PM EST

I love Eli Stone! That said, I was looking forward to last nights show and was very disappointed. I saw no chemistry, and I thought she shrieked the first part more than sang it.

A bump after the tv premiere is a natural occurence same way after a movie premiere the following weekend the movie box office always has a bump. Its actually impressive Eli Stone didn't have a big bump of its steady lukewarm ratings thanks to Katie Holmes.

Josh Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

As one poster already mentioned, I loved Katie Holmes chemistry with Johnny Lee Miller/Eli too. I could feel it through the screen, and I can't remember the last time I saw that. I liked how they left it open that Grace/Katie could possibly come back. I'd love them together. I like the case last night too. I feel bad for the mother, but hey it was her son's wishes.

class'99 Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

I heard she's phenomenal on this show. I thought this show was axed already. Any links where I can watch the entire episode of Holmes?

I think this show is not appealing because of its it faith and religious overtones but more shows like this should be on TV.

transformers Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Hollywood needs to hire more of Katie on TV and the bigscreen than talentless Jessica Alba,Anne Hathaway,Jennifer Aniston, overrated Jolie,Drew Barrymore,Cameron Diaz and the list goes on and on with annoying no talent stars.

espy Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Katie was amazing and her chemistry with Johnny Miller was so touching. But if a series is losing gas there's nothing you can do about it despite the creative efforts and guest stunts.

Rose Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Without Katie I didnt know this show existed. The greatest thing about the show would be Miller and Garber and why wasnt Katie Holmes cast in the first class because this girl is oozing with beauty and real talent.
Sorry ABC without Katie Im not really that interest in sticking around.

dense Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

My bad I thought her singing gig was it so after that I moved on to the news about the election.

Sarah Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

well Katie is the higest hot ticket on Broadway right now. To be honest I didnt even know it was on last night.
I thought its for Nov.

CltAndrew Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

I can't believe the producers of Eli Stone actually built up Katie Holmes as some kind of draw. What was really galling is that the promos causally mentioned Sigourney Weaver's network premiere (and she's a 3-time Oscar nominee!), while they built up Katie Holmes. What exactly has she done to merit this sudden worship? Do people actually care about her?

Derek Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I thought Katie was great! She has an innocence to her and I was really hoping she would stay. I hope they bring her back

Lawrence Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Katie in my opinion didn't bring much to Eli. I think any other actress could have done the same job as her. In addition, I didn't think she looked very good in the opening dance. It was a bit odd. then to see her in a tom boy outfit with short hair was fairly awful too. I've never much been a fan of katie holmes. I think she tries to take parts that are older than she looks.(Batman, Thank you for smoking). I mean could you see her as a desperate housewife? (on ABC). She's in that middlin' area for actors. Not young enough, but not old enough either. She is also not a top billing actress just yet. Not to say she might some day, but just not right now.

AggieGirl Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I love Eli Stone, but was terribly disappointed by their choice to include Katie Holmes in the show. When I see her, all I see is a giant Tom Cruise cut-out, and it happened throuhgout the show. They've got such great potential with that show, and there are so many real stars who can sing and dance. She was pathetic and took away from the show. This also was the first time that the "visions" didn't make a real link between Eli and the people with whom he was trying to help. It was a lame attempt by ABC to get some TomKat crap on their network, and they should be ashamed.

Phil Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Really no surprise with Eli Stone. Terrible show.

What are the 18-49 numbers for The Mentalist?

RK Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Katie Holmes was supposed to be a draw?

Phil Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

You mean 90210's rerun in the 8 p.m. slot, not 9 p.m. Aubry. Thats when Privileged airs.

Kate Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

That's too bad about Eli losing audience during the show, the last ten to fifteen minutes were great. And Katie Holmes actually had me welling up when she told Eli he gave her her magical airport moment.

Todd Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Do Katie Holmes fans actually exist?
