David Archuleta signs with Azoff Management

Archuletaqa_l
David Archuleta has signed with Azoff Management, the career-launching (and often sustaining) music powerhouse that counts The Eagles, Christina Aguilera, Neil Diamond, and, most recently, Morrissey among its clients. But that doesn’t mean young Archie, last season’s American Idol runner-up, will forgo his dad’s guidance from here on out. The reportedly difficult Jeff Archuleta will co-manage his son’s music career along with Azoff’s Jared Paul, who steers the pop ship for artists like Nick Lachey and New Kids on the Block.

19 Entertainment gets first dibs on Idol finalists for management, but the company apparently passed on Archuleta, while signing winner David Cook (a 19 representative declined to comment). Still, Archuleta remains on the 19 Recordings roster, and the company is intimately involved in overseeing his first album, which is due out Nov. 11. David Cook’s debut will drop a week later.

Why is it that Archuleta’s album can come out before Cook’s? I thought there was a rule that the winner’s has to come out a certain amount of time before anyone elses?

  • Lisa

Seriously? You’re still linking to that TMZ article? It’s TMZ. Get over it; a ton of people have debunked that stupid story. Frankly, I never thought it was a good idea to have management and recording under the same umbrella for the same artist. And 19 Management hasn’t done much for any runner-up in the past, so good on Archuleta for dodging that bullet.

  • Matt

to JP: clay’s album also came out a month before ruben’s so it’s not unusual. also, kristy lee cook already has an album out…so all is fair, i guess.
as for 19 passing on archie…their loss.

Aw David Archuleta is so talented! I’m so excited for his up-coming album!

    Archuleta is betta, that’s why!

I think it’s great they didn’t sign with 19 Entertainment. 19 must have done something wrong with Cook’s first single, because it’s not selling nearly as well as expected. During American Idol, everyone kept repeating how David Archuleta would not be marketable and how David Cook would sell millions of records. Nonetheless, “Crush” is doing better than Cook’s single. As for Jeff Archuleta’s involvement, David is still a minor.

  • pastel

Congrats David. You are in good hands.

  • soundscene

Wow. That must be a blow to David Archuleta that 19E passed on him and wanted Cook instead. I can see why though. Cook did win the title by millions of votes and his single is so much better. It is good though that David gets out from under his controlling stage Dad Jeff. Too bad, though, that Jeff is still a co-manager.

  • gg_doorsfan

HALLELUJAH!!!! I think this is the best move for him… Azoff is a legend, is known for taking excellent care of his clients, takes no crap, and will make sure David gets the attention he deserves…. this dude is the MAN…..

  • James

Thank god David A got away from 19E. If Cook continues to stay with 19E and continue doing this half pop half rock stuff he’s gonna go down. Run before it happens!

  • Vanessa

    Congratulation David!

  • Sue

Apparently Clay took out a lawsuit to escape the hands of 19E. Archie did it so easily! He’s really too good for them.

  • celeste

Some of the artist that are with Azoff are:
Jewel, The Eagles, Bush, REO Speedwagon, Seal, Journey, Christina Aguilera, Alter Bridge, Van Halen, Neil Diamond, New Kids on the Block, Steely Dan and Guns N’ Roses. Also Smashing Pumpkins…

  • domi

Co managers? That seems weird. I guess David’s controlling father still can’t let go. That’s bad that 19E “passed on” him and 19E “failed to comment”. Maybe 19E passed because of his awful father? Maybe they didn’t want to deal with him. Not a good start for David Archuleta.

  • Lemonade

WOW – I’m glad. 19E is a very good, but their record with managing runner-ups is bad.
JP – there’s never a rule that the winner has to drop album first. Check out the past season, especially season 5. Kristy Lee Cook’s album is in store already!

  • central80

19E must be the biggest boneheads around. Pass on DAVID ARCHULETA? They had to have made this decision before the success of Crush… anyhoo, all water under the bridge now, David can be free to chart his musical journey out from under 19E’s clutches… SCORE ONE FOR TEAM ARCHULETA!

  • soundscene

For all of those people that are so happy with David switching management firms and going with Azoff and thinking they “take such great care of its clients”, didn’t they manage Katharine McPhee? They did. Look what happened to her career. Toilet. 19E chose who they wanted in the past. Great talents such as Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood just to name a few. Don’t fool yourselves. If they really thought David was that talented, they would have tried to keep him. They fought to keep Clay. No fight involved to try and keep David Archuleta. That tells the whole story.

  • prettyinpink

Domi…I think you have it backwards. It’s a great start for David Archuleta. Given David’s success with fans/interviews on the AI Tour and more than expected success with his first single, I’m sure 19 Entertainment is kicking themselves that they did not sign Archuleta – that’s why they didn’t comment. David has sold himself over the past months, without help of a mega management team. That’s remarkable.

  • Dave

Could this be the reason Nigel so abruptly left? OOOOOO, the plot thickens…. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU DAVID – Looks like you’re gonna be in good hands, and with good company!

  • Jared

soundscene sounds like a sore Cook fan. GO Listen to Light On before it disappears from itunes.

  • ArchieFanDoc

This is great news for David Archuleta as Azoff Management has a great reputation and has done well for so many. I think that it is wonderful that Jeff will remain involved as he is obviously such a strong part of the wonderful young man David is and will help keep him grounded. I have never met two nicer people than David AND Jeff Archuleta.

  • Jared

soundscene sounds like a sore Cook fan who spends the time to bring Archie down. GO Listen to Light On before it disappears from itunes.

  • domi

    PrettyInPink,
What planet are you from? If 19E thought David was going to be so successful, they would have signed him. They have first dibs. Didn’t you read the article? They “passed” on him. David’s song has been out now for nearly 2 months. 19E is well aware of what is going on with his single. I still think they did not want to deal with his difficult Dad. They already had an “incident” with him while David was on Idol and banned him from the set.

  • Get Real

No comparison between Kat McPhee and David Archuleta… sorry, that doesn’t fly… I’m actually biting my lip to keep from laughing in your face. Katherine was and is more a music “personality” – known more for the way she LOOKS. Archuleta has more talent in his thumbnail than KM will have in 10 lifetimes… He’s smart to take his chances with someone with a proven track record for recognizing and sustaining TALENT… true – all the good management and promotion can’t sell what no one in the public wants to buy… and Ms McPhee evidently, like thousands of others artists, just didn’t have it… while Archuleta has it IN SPADES… and if you hadn’t noticed, they’re buying what the Archster is definitely selling!

  • Kim

Geez still with the dad rumors? AI totally made that story up for ratings. Everyone who has met Jeff thought that he was exactly like David. 19E should not oversee Archie’s album too if that’s the case.

  • soundscene

    Jared,
Why don’t you post statements to try and argue with what I said instead of just repeating the same gibberish multiple times. That is because you know that what I said is true and you can’t refute it.

  • Jared

Umm..ok..first you said that Light On is selling better than Crush. As I was typing, Light On just fell below Crush on itunes after it’s first week of release. There you go. Just stating the facts.

  • MaddieLynn

Well, remember 19E pays the winner of Idol $1 million, so they naturally have to invest more in the winner for success, because they put so much up front. And, 19E is in tight financial constraints for runners-up so they probably realized David Archuleta’s massive potential and also that he deserved to choose for himself. I think 19E has always been respectful of Archuleta and I think the owner happens to really favor him, and realizes that separate record company and management company will be in “his” best interest since they financially cannot sustain two winners of Idol. This year was an exception in every way. Both David’s were considered winners and great potential. But, rule wise, 19 has to commit to the winner and concentrate on returning back their million paid out already. That makes sense. I don’t get bad vibes from any of this. Knowing how respectful Archuleta and his father have been to both 19E and vice versa it finally looks like the best scenario for all.

  • john

Domi – What’s it to you who Archuleta signs with, or the circumstances? If you are not a fan of David, you have no skin in this game…. and shouldn’t care… You’re not proving any points, or changing any minds about David or his Dad… they know better than YOU, or even us, what is best for them… you’ll have your opinion to keep you warm, and David will have the success his fans have been dreaming and hoping for him… you’ll have to talk to the hand, cause we ain’t listening – PEACE, LOVE and God Bless :)
