Exclusive: Season 6 of 'Project Runway' pushed to January

Sep 5, 2008, 07:00 PM | by Lynette Rice

Categories: TV Biz

Heiditim_l In a surprise development, Lifetime has confirmed that it won't debut the sixth season of Project Runway until January so it has more time to promote the show that it swiped from Bravo last spring. It had been expected the show would debut on its new network sometime this autumn. "With this move, the series will resume its traditional cycle of two seasons per year," according to a Lifetime spokeperson. "We look forward to ringing in the New Year by giving Project Runway loyal fans a superlative season six with Heidi, Tim, Nina, and Michael. The new date and time will be announced soon.”

The news comes as a lawsuit over the rights to Project Runway continues to wind its way through the New York courts. Bravo's parent company, NBC/Universal, is alleging that the Weinstein Co. shopped Runway to Lifetime before giving its home network first refusal. NBC/Universal also is attempting to block Lifetime from marketing and promoting future cycles of the show.

One source familiar with the lawsuit believes the delay (the show had been set to debut sometime in late fall) has less to do with the ongoing litigation and more to do with Lifetime's inability to get the production together for an autumn start. Bunim-Murray Productions, the company behind The Real World, is now producing Runway since Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves left the show when it moved networks. A Lifetime insider, however, says production is on schedule and the new cycle has already been cast.

Why in the world would a crap station like lifetime ever want to do with project runway? i think that is lame. i mean did that many women watch the show i felt like it was aimed more for the homosexuals, as bravo is a gay friendly station moreso than lifetime. which is a station i find is more for the mature lady of 40. they better do the show justice because alot of people are counting on it!

Pamela :) Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 01:12 PM EST

Just heard of the "knock-off" Project Runway - Bravo network is advertising. They should have never lost the orignal rights!

Brenda Clincher Tue, May 26, 2009 at 07:24 PM EST

I am having Project Runway withdrawals. This network change is awful. I hope this new season will be worth the wait...Any idea who the contestants are?

Pamela :) Sat, May 9, 2009 at 06:12 PM EST

Now just heard show will premiere in August. I just want my show back :(

Donna Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 01:02 PM EST

Now that we think Project Runway will air, can anyone find out the names of the contestants. Come on, you internet experts, the list must be hidden somewhere!

Pamela Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 06:57 PM EST

Just checked on Lifetime.com, Project Runway #6 will premiere in the summer. finally some good news, if they carry through on it.

janice Camiolo Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 01:42 AM EST

Project Runway was always my sister and my favorite show. The best part was how it gave no-bodies a chance. We loved to watch how imaginative the want to be designers had to be. Everything is changing now, even the network. Still our favorite but we thought it was more fun and fabulous the way it used to be. We love Tim and cast!

sandi t. Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 05:24 PM EST

I had waited with eager anticipation for Project runway to air last night. What happened anyway? I would really like to read something more current on the web about this...I already know it's been bumped to a different channel. whatever! THERE IS SO LITTLE TO WATCH that keeps my interest. I love the fashion challenges. I am amazed with the creative minds of the designers. I wish I could read something from one of season six's contestants. If the show is already taped, where are you????

kyle Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 06:30 PM EST

i personally am irritated that the show has switched networks.project runway and the network bravo opened me up to many other amazing programs such as shear genius, the real housewives of orange county, and tim gunns guide to style. I think this is a poor choice in the switch of networks and even the producers! I just hope that i and other project runway fans will not be disapointed in these changes.

christine Albanese Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I just read one of the other accounts who asked if there was any way Fans could submit ideas... THis is a great idea...make a contest out of it... and the best idea according to the judges and Heidi...Rock on Project Runway...!!!!!

debrarae Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

I am saddened that because of Weinstein, NBC, and Bravo that we may not even see PR6. I miss Gunn, Korrs, GARCIA, and KLUM

debrarae Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I pray that season 6 of Project Runway will air .... SOMEWHERE.

Laura Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

I have a fresh idea for an episode to reveal the designers creativity and skill. Is there a way for fans to submit ideas?

melissa Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

i would like to be part of project runway as designer or model....

Andrew Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

This news is not current. There has been an injunction.

Trixie Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

hahaha "A Reader"... you nailed it.
I love how so many people speak as if they have the inside scoop, the behind-the-scenes dirt. When in reality, they're just board bloggers who search the net for info.
From what I hear... they're full of it.

TheBookPolice Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I'm confused. This post is almost a month old, and the court just announced that it was issuing the injunction NBC/Bravo was after. Lifetime cannot air Season 6 so long as this injunction is in effect (although, neither can Bravo). Jossip's got a good breakdown of what the injunction means. Let's see if this link will post.

Bri Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 11:42 PM EST

Season 6 was cast in July. They accepted tapes ending July 9th, then had call backs from July to August. I totally missed it too......

debrarae Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Bravo has no one to blame but theirselves for losing PR.

I am sorry however that PR has lost the magical elves, and instead has gained the Real world producers.

WHile I fear for the intergrity of the show, I will continue to watch as long as Tim Gunn is on.

Once the Gunn is gone, SO AM I.

jodi Saenger Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

yes, please answer the questions everyone is asking.

when is the next legit audition?

is number 6 all done?

when can i audition?

Tim hesse Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

When the bloody h%&#@ll did they have auditions for this season six? Did they hold them at the same time as season 5? Is that why they have such crappy talent this season - they had to split it between 2 seasons being filmed back to back. I really want someone to clear up the line that the sixth season is alrready cast please.

A reader Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

"From what you hear..."? Who are you?

Bunim Murray Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

As a fan of the show, my big concern is the switch in production company. Bunim-Murray Productions is a second rate sausage factory. They were no doubt the lowest bidder among many contenders. When they sink their cleavers into "Project Runway", the end product will unwatchable.

artemis Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Lifetime had better step up and make a big splash or else. I think marketing strategically held back the season to give enough of a break from Season 5 that people would be hankering for a new seaons. I am not sure the demographic who loves PR will be able to tolerate the Lifetime station. I for one, will struggle with it.

flicka Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

GO BRAVO! FIGHT!

GARTH Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Greed will bring this show to it's fashionably attired knees.

Harry Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

It would be so cool, if Bravo got to keep the show. Talk about greed from the Weinstein's part. 'Walkingfree' get your facts straight or else just keep it to yourself.

Owen Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

From what I hear its getting harder and harder to find worthy designers...which seems to be clearly reflected in the talent of this season's contestants...

lalala Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

^^

walkingfree Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I am beginning to believe that NBC stands for "Nothing Beneath Consideration" when it comes to corporate greed.
