'Gossip Girl' premieres to posh ratings

Natemarriedwoman_dl You know you love her: Gossip Girl hit new ratings highs among its target audience — young women, duh — and scored its second-best numbers ever in total viewers (behind its hyped first-season premiere), with 3.4 million watching its Labor Day sophomore-season premiere. That sound you hear is CW execs breathing a sigh of relief for their struggling network's buzzy savior series. (Or is it parents gasping at the steamy sex between Nate and his married cougar? Whatevs.) The holiday might have put a bit of a damper on the so-so launch of Fox's Prison Break, though, with only 6.2 million viewers tuning in; NBC won over a fair number by teasing (spoiling?) the first player to win it all on Deal or No Deal — 12.6 million tuned in for the second half hour's big victory. The CW's One Tree Hill, meanwhile, remained an old-reliable by holding most of Girl's lead-in audience with 3.2 million, giving The CW its best Monday night ever. Don't blow it tonight, 90210!

GG is such a fun show--and I agree, it is nice to escape with TV once a week. After seeing some of the great clothes (like Serena's white party dress) I'm not at all worried about the show's budget. Hope it sticks around for many seasons to come. Congrats, GG, on a strong sophomore premier!

Lighten up, people. You're getting worked up over a show called Gossip Girl. It's meant to be fluffy and light and everything vain in this world. It's nice to escape into the TV once a week. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to buy some Vitamin Water.

After all that hype and no competition other than Prison Break, Gossip Girl couldn't top the ratings for its own premiere? I know the spin about the demo and all. It's interesting to see the media so willing to be spun. Especially when the promotion of the show has become much more interesting than the show itself.

Doesn't the network have to look at ROI at some point soon? Maybe it already has. The show has already resorted to product placement (hello Vitamin Water!) - is that a sign the CW has already scaled back GG's budget?

Wow...obviously u don't watch gossip Girl. Gossip Girl is SO MUCH better than the hills. THE acting between chuck and blair last night was AMAZING!!!
