'Fringe' debuts to decent ratings while '90210' tanks

Sep 10, 2008, 01:52 PM | by Tanner Stransky

Categories: Ratings, TV Biz, TV Ratings

Leading up to the premiere of Fringe, Fox seemed to put nearly all of its fall marketing dollars into J.J. Abrams' risky sci-fi show. Along with The CW's 90210 (also airing on Tuesday nights), it was one of the season's most-hyped new bows. So did it pay off in the ratings last night? Well...sorta. Over its 90-minute premiere, Fringe averaged 9 million viewers, according to overnight ratings. Not too shabby, for sure, but the suits over at Fox probably aren't dancing in their offices today, either. A double-digit premiere would have been much more stir-worthy. To the show's credit, though, it did improve on its audience every half hour, which is a good sign (because it means viewers weren't getting bored and tuning out), but the real test is still yet to come. Will fans be compelled to come back for the next installment? Will Fox juggernaut House give it a boost? What happens in two weeks when ABC's Dancing With the Stars results show and CBS's The Mentalist debut? (To weigh in on the Fringe series premiere, head over to PopWatch.

Tuesday night's other big story brings us back to 90210. The second episode drew just 3.3 million viewers — down a startling 30 percent from its 4.7 million debut last week. Most shows drop off a bit after their premieres, but anything beyond 10 or 15 percent is cause for serious concern. Maybe fans weren't as excited by the return of Jackie Taylor (Ann Gillespie) this week as they were by Brenda Walsh (Shannon Doherty) last week?

Last night, The CW also premiered another series focused on the young, rich, and fabulous: Privileged, starring Reba cutie JoAnna Garcia as the new tutor to two Palm Beach snobs. The debut drew a CW-appropriate 2.9 million viewers, shedding just 12 percent of 90210's diminishing audience. Looking back at last year, though, Privileged's numbers are an improvement on the former holder of the Tuesday-at-9 p.m. timeslot, Reaper, which averaged only 2.3 million viewers. (Reaper returns midseason in a TBD spot.) However, as the rest of the networks premiere their full slates and certain shows break out or fizzle, we'll be looking at a vastly different landscape in the next few weeks. So the moral of this story? Stay tuned.

I have given "Fringe" enough time to impress me but I just hate it. It's too goofy for me.

Fringe and 90210 are lame!

Bring back Reaper!!!

Kerry Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

I watched the first episode of 90210 and I am a huge Tori Spelling fan and it just isn't the same if she isn't apart of her father's legacy. I'll stick with Gossip Girl

matt Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

Fringe was great for about 12 1/2 minutes. There was absolutely nothing to hold on to to make me want to watch another episode. B O R I N G !!!

Eric Gibson Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 04:15 AM EST

Fringe was good. Granted, is played out a little too close to X-Files, with slightly less interested characters -- for now. Still, it was the first episode and we (I) cannot expect characters to be fully fleshed out yet. I think it might be nice for them to tone down the conspiracy theory bit making it a FULL rip-off of X-Files and make the show a more transhumanist conflict thing (which has not been down on TV yet) it would have more of its own unique flavor.

Will I keep watching? Definately. I already have my TiVo set to record a season pass. As long at Fox doesn't start thinking this show can directly compete with the Heroes or the eventual Lost timeslots, I think they can make a reasonaly good run of it.

Scott Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

Fringe was the best show I`ve seen in years! It kept my attention which lately is hard for a tv show to do.It`s about time they had a show like this+not a stupid reality show, survivor(which I`ve never watched,it`s so lame)or Hole in the Wall.We need more shows like Fringe!I may even buy a new television.

Katie Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

I thought fringe was great. You have to remember that it's a pretty complex show and it's new. They have to introduce the characters and such so the pilot isn't going to be the greatest. I also don't really get how it's a rip off of the xfiles? Sure it deals with sci-fi stuff, but it's also about science. And it's not a whole bunch of random and different creatures like the xfiles. I think it's completely different. It actually has to do with people, not random supernatural stuff. It's about what people can do with science...don't see all the similarities. I'm going to keep watching.

Lynn Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

As an old BH 90210 fan, I was hugely disappointed by the new show. It's completely lacking in originality. So ok, the mean freaky looking girl's father is cheating on her mother... remind anyone of The OC (which was formerly referred to as the new 90210)? At least in that show the father that was cheating was doing it with a man, and the mother that was cheating was doing it with her daughters ex-boyfriend... definitely a little more shocking. If they want this show to survive they have to give the adults a more interesting story line to keep the old 90210 fans entertained. I'm going to keep watching only to find out who Kelly's babies dad is.

Fringe was awesome by the way... so glad Joshua Jackson is back.

Dee Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 06:50 AM EST

FRINGE was great!! It was so nice to have something that wasn't a reality show and didn't have the initials CSI in it. It definitely had an X-Files vibe to it without being the X-Files. This X-Phile can't wait for the next episode of FRINGE! JJ Abrams is the best thing to come along in a very long time!!

Christina Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:59 AM EST

90210 is just restarting early returns for Gossip Girl was worst when it first came out on CW, as for what show I watched I sticked to 90210 and I think in time this cast and this new version is taking back primetime the last show I thought that about was Dawson's Creek after 90210 and now I'm confident 90210 will take back primetime TV on Tuesdays, Fringe just made it's debut it's going to have a dropoff also trust me it will, you guys will learn don't mess w/ the code. :D

James Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

Many people liked the original BH 90210 (me being one of them...sorry about that), and I tried to relate to this updated version on the CW with the characters and racy storylines. But I admit, when I watched that 2-hour season premiere, it didn't feel like the '90210' that I remembered it as. I felt like going to my Walmart and purchasing the DVDs of the original series so I can go back to a much happier time.
I know, the CW is trying really hard to establish something new with 90210 with this updated version. But this version...it's not going to work.
The original BH 90210 was on for 10 seasons, and it left its mark in TV history. The CW 90210 won't last 10 episodes. Why reinvent the wheel?

sam Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

Sorry for the repeat.

sam Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Fringe had interesting moments, but it was too long and too slow. I probably won't watch again.

sam Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

Fringe had interesting moments, but it was too long and too slow. I probably won't watch again.

Staci Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

90210 the original was great. We'll return to the original over and over again for reruns and popcorn night. It will become our brady bunch. This new one may work for the teens today 15 -18 crowd, but not many older people....Especially viewers of the original.

Fringe was awesome. I was never into X Files, though I saw a few episodes. This show actually deals with some of the sciences before it gets to paranormal. Some of these thing we've discussed in theoretics, physics, and molecular biology & biochem. Also inour military science classes we are opened up to probabilities, though always cautioned how unlikely. I mean you patch enough of the medical disorders out there and add several unknown catalysts only God knows what could happen. So yeah I'll watch again.

nicole Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

As someone who watched every BH90210, I have to say the new one entertains me. It's not the greatest show ever made but Fringe looked stupid. I will watch 90210 again.

Seann Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

I enjoy watching 90210. I don't care that the plots are cheap and the acting is silly. I was semi-interested in Fringe, but I missed it the first time around. Privileged is thus far wonderful. I never realized how much potential that girl had when she was on Reba. The cast is fun and she heads it wonderfully. Reaper, though...I will miss that show until it comes back in mid-season. I fear for its success. Especially since it just barely skated past the excellent (but canceled) "Aliens in America" to return for the new season. The CW is quickly becoming known for having well-acted, properly scripted shows, and canceling them when they show the slightest drop in ratings...Yet the hokey "One Tree Hill" keeps on trucking.

Rob Grizzly Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

90210- LOL that's what they get

Dee Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Agreeing with many others, watching 90210 is pretty much torture (besides the scenes with Jennie Garth & Silver is cool too). The dialogue has made me wince on several occasions and don't even get me started on the acting. Privileged was a much better show; I will be watching that on Tuesdays for sure and will do something else with my time at 8 p.m.

jeff Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

Fringe was okay, but it's first episode was nowhere near as enthralling as Lost, Alias, X Files or Twin Peaks' pilots. I guess I'm a sucker for serialized dramas. Intelligent (or arty) serialized dramas. I'll probably give Fringe a chance, but only because I trust in you, JJ. LOST!

Gidge Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I thought Fringe was awesome.

michelle Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

i watched the pilot of fringe when it was leaked on the internet about a month ago and i liked it a lot. i didn't watch this week b/c i had already seen it. i'll definitely tune in next week. as for 90210...they have me until they spill the beans on kelly's baby daddy. i'm a huge fan of the original and that's the main thing that keeping me watching...oh and BRING BACK DONNA!!!

Snsetblaze Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

My husband and I liked Fringe enough to give it a few more weeks. It did drag a bit in the middle.

I never watched 90210 and don't plan to now but strangely my husband did when he was in high school and is recording it now. This is a guy who generally watches mostly sci-fi/horror/fantasy, cartoons and Burn Notice, House and car racing. I find it very amusing.

chad Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

I always love the fall tv season and really was looking forward to some of the new shows. I thought the official start of the new tv season is the week of Sept. 22nd though the 28th. Still, I did catch two of the early premieres, Fringe and 90210. Both arrived as duds. L O S T is arguably the best event on tv right now, so I always expect big things from any J J Abrams creation. This one was not even close to good. I turned over to Wipeout mid way through the show.
90210 was just tragic! Jennie Garth is too good to be starring in this version of 90210. Oh well, there's still hope something good will arrive by the end of Sept. 28th. I plan on testing the waters for two other shows, Eleventh Hour and Opportunity Knocks. If they are bad, I always have Pushing Daises to fall back on as a reliable, great show.

Sunny Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

I tuned out Fringe after the first hour. Joshua Jackson's endless quips grated after the first few hundred, more improv comic than genius scientist. And his dad blurting out that he'd urinated on himself? TMI. X-Files allowed it's actors to appear genuine and unflappable despite all the surprises on the show, but Fringe is hyper aware of Every Single Twist. The actors deliver their lines with hyperbole, dead stares and dramatic portent aplenty as if the audience is too dumb to know when to be mistified. Blair Butler was the worst offender, overplaying her Mysterious Secretary with the Mechanical Arm. If she'd had a mustache she'd have twirled it and cackled maniacally while petting a flying monkey. This show is no X-Files or Alias. At best it's another pointless, cobbled together mishmash like Lost that will explain little and chase it's tail in circles until the audience loses interest.

tiger1475 Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Fringe ROCKED and I will be a regular viewer. The scripting is wonderful. I frankly HATED the X Files I could never get into it. Fringe definitely is something I will be watching.

Solitaire40 Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I forgot to mention somebody I know was watching Fringe and trying to watch Eureka too which comes on at the same time apparently. Eureka is halfway thru it's season so Fringe may pick up some of it's audiance later.

Steven Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I thought SOME of the dialogue in Fringe was mediocre, considering it coming from Robert Orci, Alex Krutzman & JJ Abrams, but the action/sci-fi/special effects were amazing. MASSIVE DYNAMIC HQ was an amazing set, and the directing was very good. The homage to Altered States was cool... FRINGE is promising. Now, about all of that X-Files-copying stuff. Maybe. But who cares? It's an update. I felt like I was watching a Michael Crichton novel.

Solitaire40 Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

I liked Fringe and although it may have been a bit slow it was the 1st show which had to introduce new characters. I saw a little bit of the X-Files but also Altered States, Threshold, and a few other shows/movies I can't think of now. But that is a good thing. A show that will cover it all! As an X-Files Fan I hope this will last since the X-Files is gone. We need a new good SCIFI show and X-Files also had shows that resembled other scifi movies. I'm glad they will show it again over the weekend. They should do it every weekend in between football games.

Neila Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

Fringe- worst dialog ever.-------

"Excellent! Let's go make some LSD".
And--- FBI agent says, "Is that a cow?", (with cow standing right there).Doesn't give the agent much credibility now does it?

There was this little show called X-Files some while back that actually had good writing.

jb Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

No one remembers this, but the original 90210 was almost canceled after its first season. The second season was when it really caught on. I will say, however, that Gossip Girl is a far more entertaining and clever show than the new 90210.

Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

Fringe was great. I look forward to the rest of the season. I hope they continue to keep the story closer to science fiction than to science fantasy. Lost sometimes toys around with supernatural "explanations" for strange phenomena. I hope that the writers for Fringe avoid this. If they do I think the show will seem more and more distinct.

I tried to watch 90210 but it's that freakin Annie that is killing me. Her facial expressions is too much. Also those heifers needs a hamburger and milkshake

mmmm Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

90210 was a torture last week and I attempted to watch it this week and I just couldn't do that to myself.
Fringe was pretty good, however I'm a LOST freak so everything similar is just not good enought.Fringe had some similarities, like the plane and even the sound effects were a total Lost rip off...but JJ Abrams is still awesome!
Cancel 90210!
GG is good enough and one show with rich teenagers is plenty.

Di Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

I thought 90210 was really good but pilots are never fantastic. I'm a huge fan of the original series but if you go back and watch the pilot it's pathetic. I hope it doesn't get cancelled and people give it a bit more of a chance to iron out it's issues.

Di Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

jords Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

Pilots are hard, especially one as complex as Fringe, which started with a bang and rode the action train for the full 90 minutes. I personally loved it, and know JJ felt the follow-ups to the pilot were stronger. I guess you can mark me down as a solid "Team JJ"!

PS. Denethor as the crazy Dr. Wackadoo was genius casting, btw

V Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

Man I thought Fringe really stunk and I was excited to see it. I know some of you like it, but it isn't half as compelling as Lost or Heroes. I'm betting money it will have a 90210 like drop off week two.

James Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

The new 90210 will be canceled very quickly. I'll be surprised if it comes back for next fall, but I think after one season, we won't remember that this show existed.
Everyone liked the original Beverly Hills 90210 with Brenda, Jennie, Dylan and all the other characters.
Only Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth (and the Peach Pit actor Joe Tata) agreed to be in the new 90210. But the original actors like Jason Priestly and Luke Perry chose not to reprise their roles; in hindsight, I think they can see that the new 90210 is not going to do well and not going to last very long on the CW.

Kerri Johnson Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Fringe was horrible... a wannabe X-files. I miss X-files..now that was a good show!

Mikey M Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

I will be a regular viewer of Fringe.
I will not be a regular viewer of 90210.
From 90210 numbers, neither will too many others.
It really is a crappy show.
Are kids really like this?

Raven_Moon Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

I really liked "Fringe." I'll definitely watch next week.

Casey Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Fringe was sweet. I dug it a lot. It reminds me of an updated version of "X-Files." And to be honest, Terminator is a letdown.

Katie Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

They should cancel 90210 and give Jennie Garth her own show!

Jessica Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I don't think series premieres are ever as good as the rest of the show. I personally thought last night was much better the the first week and I will continue watching. I don't think you can watch one episode and base a show off of that. Everyone keeps forgetting this is not based just off of the old crew, the old crew is secondary characters to the new crew. I think you have to give it a couple more episodes before deciding, one episode doesn't say much about a show. I am a One Tree Hill fan too and when ever they have a two part show, the first episode is never as good as the second episode.

James Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Fringe was monstrously bad. I wanted to like it, but it's a weak knockoff of X-Files. The lead actress has real trouble with the American accent, and it really stifles her performance. Jackson was good. I don't think it will last.

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

for all of you non-dvr'ers an encore of the Fringe premiere will be on Sunday, September 14th.

i personally loved it! yay for joshua jackson back on tv!!!

Ant Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

I'm not a 90210 fan whatsoever. Fringe has my attention so far.
I liked seeing Joshua Jackson back on tv and Anna Torv is a great lead.
Quirky cast. :)

peaches Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

90210h-no! I was one of the suckers who tuned in last night for more torture and man was I sorry I did! But Privileged was a delight! Charming, funny, and sweet, it's my new "feel good show" now that Men in Trees is gone.

joeinmemphis Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Truthfully i though 90210 came on on Mondays and is a much better match with Gossip Girl than Old Tree Hill. I like it and think its a good show but that time slot bums and especially when American Idol comes on it will obliterated.

Katrina Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I'm not that shocked about the huge drop off in the 90210 audience. I was one of the millions who gave it a two-hour chance last week and then took it off my DVR in disgust. It's stale and tired. The leads are weak. Annie is very annoying and Naomi is just not as fun as the Blair character on Gossip Girl. I wish they had cast someone with the charisma of JoAnna Garcia on Privileged. Then we might have a show!

justme Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I didn't watch the new 90210 as I had started watching it last week and it was horrible. The only reason I would watch it is for Jennie Garth, but aside from that, it's old already. This is one of those shows that should NOT have been redone...The original had done everything already. Just adding more sex and controversy into the mix is not an absolute "sell"...Sorry.

Sarah Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

The only good story line on 90210 is anything involving Jennie Garth, other than that, I don't really care. But that's probably because I used to watch the original. When I watch it, every time a scandel is shown I find a teen show where is already happened. I know there is only so much you can do for a teen soap, but try to be a little more original.

fab Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

FRINGE!I loved it! it's got an X-file vibe..but sexier!I loved it!GO JJ

SP Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Only saw the first 30 mins of Fringe...wasn't interested after that point. But I did enjoy seeing Josh Jackson and the guy that played Bobby's brother on Third Watch

Johnathan Smalls Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Privileged was good. I liked it alot and it takes my time on my slot for the season. I can't say the same about 90210. Sorry. It's just that I tired of the same plotted storylines which are predictable to say the least. FRINGE!!! was awsome. wow awsome. Can't wait till HEROES come back in two weeks!!!

Theophilus H. Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

I enjoyed Privileged last night. It was excellent, fresh and new compared to some ot the other shows on television. On the other hand "90210" was OK, not great but OK. I was about 12 when the show went off and didn't really watch it that much and I kind of feel the same way about the remake. It's seemingly boring and dragging with the feeling that I can't wait for the commercials to come on. I give the show Privileged eight out of ten stars. Keep up the goo work Garcia.

Tanith Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

I liked "Fringe" and will tune in again. I thought it was uneven but promised to be good, and like somebody else said, the ending paid off for a lot.

Denise Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

90210, Fringe and Privileged were all really good last night!!! I will watch all 3.
P.S J.J Abrams YOU ROCK!

Grinding Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

As a guy, 90210 just isn't by thing (neither was the original), and Fringe is just a re-hash of X-Files, Terminator, Supernatural and any other sci-fi show on any network. Privileged was a nice change, even for this guy. And what guy doesn't want to see JoAnna Garcia again. Lucious!

Deejay Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

For those that endured the long premiere it PAYED OFF AT THE END!!! ;)

Mike Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

90210 reairs tonight and Fringe reairs on Sunday. I don't think it's really that hard to keep track of stuff if you're actually interested in watching it--especially since so many people have DVRs with a season pass option now.

And I'd rather have premieres all spread out than have everything starting all at once.

Jen Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I can't believe that Fringe built audience over the hour and a half. I turned it off because it was boring! popculturecurmudgeon.blogspot.com

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Priveledged was surprisingly good. I'd seen The Nanny Diaries (and was not a fan), so I wasn't even planning on tuning in. When Fringe ended, I watched about 5 minutes of the lame Hole In The Wall, before catching the end of Priveledged. I enjoyed it so much I caught the entire show later.

echo Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

The way in which the TV networks are rolling out shows this season is, IMHO, partly to blame for lower than expected numbers. (I'm not even going to get into the outdated Nielsen system, "time-shifting," etc.)
When I saw this headline, I was surprised — I was really looking forward to watching Fringe, and despite all of the promotion, I missed it! That sucks because, sure, it may be legally available online (and is most certainly being passed around in pirated form), but I probably won't bother trying to find and view it. The same happened with Terminator and the new 90210.
I still have "appointment" TV shows such as Heroes and The Shield, but there are a ton of new and returning series that could go on my must-watch list — if I could remember to watch them in the first place! Hopefully I'll remember all of this stuff next week...
Back to my main point: Does anyone else remember when the fall TV season had a definitive starting point?

I kinda liked the Privileged premiere. I read the book when it was announced that the CW was doing a series on it and Rina is doing the source material justice. It's not too much like the book and the pacing is nice. I hope this show does well.
