'David Blaine's Dive of Death' disappoints in ratings

Sep 25, 2008, 03:28 PM | by Tim Stack

Categories: Ratings

Davidblaine_l While it was slightly delayed due to President Bush's address on the current financial crisis, ABC's much-hyped two-hour David Blaine special still proved to be a dud with only 7.7 million viewers, according to overnight ratings. David Blaine's Dive of Death (pictured) lost more than half of its Dancing With the Stars lead-in audience (15.6 million). The illusionist could not compete with CBS' Criminal Minds which won the 9-10 p.m. hour with 15.1 million, up 19 percent from last year's premiere of 12.7 million. NBC's America's Got Talent also dipped in viewership with 10.3 million, down from last week's 12 million. But the biggest ratings bomb of the night would have to be Fox's 'Til Death which only saw about 4.1 million viewers.

At 10 p.m., CSI: NY was also up from last year's premiere (12.7 million) with a quite impressive 15.6 million viewers, building slightly on Minds' audience. NBC's Lipstick Jungle season 2 premiere only earned 6.1 million viewers, down from its 7.5 million debut last February.

Earlier in the evening, CBS' new comedy block of The New Adventures of Old Christine and rooke series Gary Unmarried were not met with much laughter, rating just 6.7 million and 6.8 million, respectively. NBC's flashy reboot of Knight Rider also bombed with a sorry 7.3 million, a big drop from the 12.7 million people that watched the network's February TV movie. Elsewhere, Fox's Bones continued to perform solidly with 9.6 million while The CW's America's Next Top Model reached 4.1 million eyes.

This comment is for "Real Magician" who made ths comment that the lottery ticket trick was staged by putting fakes or stooges in the audience. I personally was on the Dive of Death show in the second group of girls shown when he did the lottery ticket trick. We were sitting in a restaurant in Nashville when I looked out the window and saw David. We ran outside, and he asked us to follow him to watch some magic. We each picked a number AT RANDOM that ended up being on the ticket. How in the heck he did it, I don't know. I assumed he had some sort of printer in his pocket or something. He pulled the ticket out of a flat wallet, and the face of the ticket was up against nothing but a piece of leather in a card slot of the wallet. I always wondered if he staged his tricks with actors, but I can GUARANTEE you we were just in the right place at the right time.

Ted Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

Knight Rider was a joke. Once again NBC ruined a perfectly good show. First they destroyed Bionic Woman and now they have destroyed Knight Rider. What's next NBC?????

Steve Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

THE DIVE OF DEATH WAS NOT DONE RIGHT..BUT THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER STUNTS WHICH ARE MIND BLOWING...DAVID BLAINE IS A GENIUS OF THIS CENTURY

Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

this was so disapointing. the first part of the show was good, and the bullet catch was cool, but the "dive of death" was just stupid i thought that he was actually gunna jump, not justy step off of the platform and be lowered down by a harness. i was really annoyed.

Bleh Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

The dive clearly went wrong. This isnt what he intended. Recon he wanted to jump down just miss the stage and then rocket up into the air. The reaction of the poeple was hilarious though. Commentator: "OMG hes completely dissapeared into nothing. Fans: No he hasnt hes just over there. LOL

Zach Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I think after two hours of Dancing with the Stars and their Cloris Leachman fill, most ABC viewers were done for the night. It's hard to watch anything after a show that airs for two hours.

Criss Angels Girl Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

Please, this guy can't hold a candle to my Criss. What kind of dork ends a stunt like that? Totally pathetic.

Colt Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 04:51 AM EST

I call shananigans on this whole stunt...He didnt hang for 60hrs. He stood upright for 5 to 10 minutes every hr.
Phony stunt

Jordan Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:55 AM EST

This show was so hyped up for days, and it had the most disappointing ending. After Criminal Minds, I flipped over to the station, only to hear....this stunt will probably never be attempted again due to the danger. RIGHT. How much danger is envolved when your "Dive of Death," isn't a dive, you're hanging from safty wires and you just kind of lept off the platform. It was so lame and boring, and if I were him, and all those fans that stood there for days and waited for that leap of death, I would be totally disappointed and over it and him. He should be ashamed of himself for the poor show he gave his true fans....he sucked bigtime. They said..."put your children to bed now, and don't attempt this at home,....but crap, I could climb 60 ft and jump with a safty cable like he did..no danger at all, and not a true leap of death. I am pissed I even watched the last 15 minutes, that was 15 minutes too long.

matt Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I have to agree with several of you on here. It takes a special kind of stupid to watch a tv program week after week after week, then go online and write about how much you hate that show! HUH?? LOL

wallace Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

The "jump" of death was all about the lights-they should have gone off as he was falling but instead showed him fall short and hang by a wire and then slowly be lifted up to....?

RedDog14 Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

I didn't even know David Blaine had a special on. I caught the end by accident. Glad I didn't waste 2 hrs. Of my life on that sad excuse for a trick. I'll take Cris Angel on his worst day over little david blah.

zac Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

criss angel is better way better he all was dose the trick that he says hes going to do im with that steve-o dude

steve-o Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

ok the hanging for 3 days thang was all kool but David if u say ur going todive then dive u just gave up if i was u i would of go for it if u say ur going to do one thang and u dont ur a lie or was it cuz u been hanging for 3 days like a bat when u went up in the air and the light went out was it cuz u turned into a bat and fly off? hahahahaha

Bernice White Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

Being that I am David Blaines #1 fan, I am totally confused when it came to his last stunt. I mean, I totally believe in magic but the way he did it is beyond unbelieveable. I always believed in him but what happened to the last stunt? To me he just got down and left the whole park. I didnt think it was supposed to happen like that. I thought he was going to take the bullet in the mouth again. He still rocks in my world. He just probably have to do it all again whatever he was trying to do.

Izzzz Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

I give it to him for hanging upside down for three days but that that jump just flat out sucked ! It seemed like a practice jump, and he was gonna get lifted and do it again. I didnt even know it was that hyped. I kept flipping channels back and forth but damn that was terrible.

M Weyer Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

If you haven't yet, you should see Triumph the Insult Comic Dog's spot on hand mocking the whole proceedings. "David Blaine is attempting to hang upside down for 60 hours without entertaining anyone." Hysterical shots at the whole process, the breaks, the fans watching and even gets right into Blaine's face to mock him, brilliant.

And also good was Chelsea Handler on her E show also mocking the whole thing and Blaine's saying the Presidental speech cut into his ratings. "No, the ratings tanked because you suck!"

kingrrexxx Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

Yeah you wasteful time guys. You should be doing something better or something. Don't worry bout the fact that what he hyped was intriguing. What he did was different from what he promised. Yeah we all watched...you douchebag. When you put yourself in that position carry it out. He dissappointed everyone that watched. He owes us a public suicide.

Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

i think its hilarious that most of you guys are bashing it and calling it a waste of time. you say you have better things to do than waste your time with it but you obviously dont if you sat down to watch it, or have the time to write about how much it sucked. like you sat there and watched it and at the end said well that sucked, and then came on here and wrote about how it was a waste of time. well you're the one who took 2 hours out of your day to watch it in the first place. if your disappointed noone cares. half the time it turns into an argument on here, with 2 idiots talking about something that isnt even related to the subject at hand. for the people that think hes a joke i dont see any of you on 2 hour tv specials. people make mistakes. it happens, you cant be mad that it wasted your time because you obviously had nothing better to do if you watched it

Cory Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Criss Angel you do the same revealings and your "illusions" are all too fake. David Blaine represents a bit of hope for the younger audiences instead of having tv edited special effects he represents a bit of reality.

Amanda Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

you are all pathetic. you wanna sit there and say how everybody else who left a comment is pathetic when u yourself are writing one. omg i wanna smack you. one other thing, if u can be hung upside down for 60 hours please be my guest, im sure we all would love to see it. dont hate on david blane.

Cris A. Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

David Blaine is the worst thing to happen to magic since the masked magician revealed all of our secrets on Fox.

dave Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

David Blaine and Cris Angel should fight to the death. Then we'd be without at least one of them.

Just Justice Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

First off, David Blaine needs to go back to street magic. This is where he has proven to shine.

Secondly, people attacking others for grammar/spelling on the internet is stupid... but attacking people for attacking people and complaining about the attacker's grammar (about "and/or" and claiming it should be replaced by "nor") is just ridiculous when the grammatical correction is incorrect. The statement neither warranted the word "nor" nor was that the intention. Although I don't agree with what the original complainer (Troy Miller), the use of and/or was correct... He was claiming it was A and B or A or B. That is a valid and/or usage.

Trolls, light your fires. You are the reason the world thinks we are all ignorant over here.

Rob Grizzly Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

This is great news. I hate all of those shows.

nycguy Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

i feel like i'm taking crazy pills here. i went to central park the other day to check him out and HE WAS RIGHT SIDE UP. he forgot to advertise the stunt as having 15 minute breaks. don't get me started on the "dive of death" either. i'm glad this guy got sh*tty ratings. get the hint, dude.
hopefully all of hollywood got the hint with sh*tty ratings for the emmy's last week as well. nobody cares who's wearing what. it amazes me how egocentric many of these celebrities are.

MIndfreaky Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Sorry TroyMiller. I meant to spell love note

Mindfreaky Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Is "Steve" really David Blaine?

His stunts are stupid, but if you don't like them, don't go see him, & don't turn on the tv specials.
A friend of mine went to school with DB. They were friends until my friend caught him sticking a love not in his girlfriends locker. Was that bad magic? or a stupid stunt?

Troy Millers MOM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Troy Miller you are a moron who just made yourself look like the biggest fool by commenting on a previous comment, on how they used and spelled words. You should talk dummy...I quote you: " it was from a complete moron who can neither spell and/or type". And/or? Yeah great english dummy. How about "nor"? You should jump into incoming traffic.

Steve Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

I'm not trying to defend this stunt because it was weak, but people need to quit attacking his "magic". David Blaine isn't trying to perform magic or illusions with these stunts. They are just tests of physical and mental endurance...pushing the limits of what a human body/mind can do.

I'm getting fed up with the complaints about his "magic" acts. This is a completely different thing altogether. People need to learn the difference between a stunt and a magic act.

I'm sure these complaints come from the same naysayers that dispute the fact that a magician didn't REALLY walk through that wall or "Theres NO WAY he actually got cut in half". Thank you for the expertise. We all know. Magic isn't real. Just enjoy it when your eyes are fooled.

Jason Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

Sitting in a block of ice or chilling on a pole for a week isn't magic. It's just mind numbingly boring. When your "magic" takes 7 days to complete, don't expect people to be impressed. This guy is a tool.

nita Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

I thing Greg who wrote about Obama making David Blaine sectretary of state should know that McCain will need David Blaine's mother to do that job.

lilkunta Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

David: Not surprised. The whole stunt sounds very boring.

I cant believe CSIMiami got that many ratings. That show sucks.

"Til Death". More lo ratings. Perhaps fox will FINALLY cancel this show. I dont know y they gave it a 2nd chance anyways when its ratings werent good last season.

skaterdude Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

I enjoyed watching him on Regis and Kelly the other morning. Kelly Ripa hung upside down with him for a short time. I'd hang upside down with her anytime. She is absolutely gorgeous!

troy miller Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

The very first posting on Sep. 26 sounds like it was from a complete moron who can neither spell and/or type. It looks like a five-year old child posted it.

Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

this was the dummbest thing i have ever seen its not magic at all...he didnt even get held upside down 4 the full 60 hrs they let him stand up 4 5 minutes durring it...and then at the end he was sopposed to fall down to the ground and u can see the cable that is holding him up and then the announcer is like where did he go and u can heer the hellicopter lifting him up in the air and then the announcer is making a big deal out of it like he flew away by himself ...worst thing i have ever paied attention to

Thank goodness we DVRd the David Blaine show to watch America's Got Talent. My sister and I watched the show that actually had talent, then went back to see what Blaine was up to. The entire time we kept wondering ... "What is this dive of death? What is going to happen?" So, like everyone else, we kept watching. The end finally comes and he is lowered from a cable to dangle and then be lifted up ... what the CRAP!!!??? I was seriously mad at the end. I mean i really wanted to give him another chance after his HUGE disappointment with his last attempt to hold his breath for 9 min (which also didn't work!). But I will never watch another David Blaine ANYTHING. What was he thinking? "Where did he go?" HE'S AT THE TOP OF THE CRAIN!!!

king Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

it was awesome. this is the best magician to have ever lived on this earth. better than the late great myrlin

eric Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

What a waste; read the comments and good thing I didn't watch nor record the show.

Real Magician Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

I am most disappointed by the fact that David has always and continues to use "stooges" or "plants" in most of his televised street magic routines. For example, the lottery ticket routine shown last night is accomplished by simply using 6 people planted in the crowd who have been given the number ahead of time. It is a well know fact that David used enhanced/fake photography in his first street magic special when performaing his "Personal Levitation" a.k.a. The Balducci Levitation. That fake photography got David in some legal problems with IBM, Corp who hired him for a trade show shortly after his first TV show aired but were sadly disappointed when he could only levitate 4 or 5 inches (like we all do when performing the Balducci Levitation) as opposed to the 16 to 18 inches Daivd faked on television. Bottom line... I still like him and will always watch!

Luis PJ Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

Blame David Blaine

Maven Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

...and you MUST be republican to believe in magic. I wonder if McCain postponed the debate because his mind has been so vexed with Blane's latest feat that he can't possibly talk about the economy until next week.

Jeff W. Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

The only surprise is that anyone watched this at all. I can't imagine having so little going on in my life that I would tune in to see some idiot hanging upside down for no apparent reason. Perhaps next we can watch paint dry. What's most amazing is that it was a 2 hour special - two hours!!!

KB Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

People who hate Blaine must be Democrats? Actually, okay - I'll accept that logic. Because Blaine-haters are skeptics and intellectuals - smart people use their brains and question things! Republicans will obviously believe anything - Tax cuts during massive spending won't hurt the economy, Iraq was a threat to the US, Evolution is fake, David Blaine stunts are amazing, blah, blah, blah. Sheeple.

Greg Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

I'm lucky to have recorded the ending to the so-called "Dive of Death" on my HD DVD Recorder. That could go down in tv history as the most anti-climactic overproduced tv garbage and I have an HD recording! Embarrassing! Who could have ever thought that stunt even conceptually was worthy of a live tv show? Someday I'll show my kids how bad tv got in 2008.
