Ratings: 'Chuck,' 'Life' premieres take a nosedive

Sep 30, 2008, 04:11 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Gossip Girl, Heroes, Television, TV Biz, TV Ratings

Damienzachary_l_2 Absence didn't make the heart grow fonder for fans of NBC's Chuck (pictured near left: Zachary Levy) and Life (pictured: Damian Lewis). The two series, which had been off the air since January 2008 and December 2007, respectively, returned Monday night to disappointing numbers for their second season premieres. According to overnight ratings, Chuck nabbed 6.6 million viewers, down 28 percent from last fall's debut and off 17 percent from its season 1 average. Life's bow was seen by 6.9 million viewers, down 30 percent from its '07 debut and a 7 percent decline from its freshman average. The true test for Life, however, which aired Wednesdays last fall, will be when it debuts in its new time slot this Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

Heroes lost viewers as well — about 750,000 of them from last week's two-hour season 3 premiere. This week's episode was viewed by 9.3 million, though that number will, of course, rise when DVR viewings from the next few days are factored in.

To no one's surprise, ABC dominated the night, with the start of Dancing With the Stars Week 2. Two hours of paso dobles and rumbas were witnessed by 19.3 million viewers, down 10 percent from the season opener. While Boston Legal only retained roughly half of that audience, it's 9.8 million viewers actually improved on its season premiere by 11 percent (though it did lose 874,000 viewers in its second half hour).

The CBS lineup also showed the to-be-expected post-premiere-week drops: 8.7 million viewers tuned in for the second episode of The Big Bang Theory (down 7 percent from the premiere); 8.8 million for How I Met Your Mother (down 10 percent); 13.8 million for Two and a Half Men (down 8 percent); 9.3 million for the freshman sitcom Worst Week (down 14 percent); and 14.3 million for CSI: Miami (down 17 percent). On the plus side, CSI: Miami won the 10 p.m. hour, as usual, and all of the returning shows are up from their last-season average.

It's difficult to find a positive spin for Fox's Monday offerings. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Prison Break, both of which premiered early in September, each nabbed an identical 5.3 million viewers last night. That number is well below the shows' '07-'08 averages, 9.8 million and 7.5 million, respectively. What's more, each episode of Prison Break this season has been rated lower than the one that came before it.

The CW, meanwhile, does have reason to celebrate: One Tree Hill's fifth episode of season 6 was also its highest-rated, with 3.4 million viewers. And Gossip Girl, which hit a series high on Sept. 15 (3.7 million) before sliding back on Sept. 22 (3.3 million), was once again moving in the right direction this week with 3.5 million viewers.

I watched Chuck and Life a week early on Hulu. Early Premier week was genius! I can't believe my favorite two shows have low "numbers" maybe these "numbers" aren't as accurate as they think. I would NEVER miss an episode of either amazing show! Reality TV sucks.

james Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:22 AM EST

I downloaded Chuck for free from Itunes as well a full week earlier than the premiere. Life was also available.

Thomas Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:56 AM EST

Chuck and Life (as well as various other NBC Universal shows) were available free (and some in HD) when they came back to iTunes. I downloaded them from there.

JD Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Please watch CHUCK. It would be a tragedy to let such a great show get canceled.

Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

Go Chuck!

Rob Grizzly Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Obviously Chuck and Terminator are geared to the same demographic, so airing at the same time divides the audience. Can lump Heroes in there to.

ollie Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

Yes, PLEASE watch Chuck!
It's one of the best and underrated television shows out there--smart, witty writing, talented cast, entertaining storylines--don't miss out!

Man, if Chuck gets canceled and crap like Worst Week and Gary Unmarried stays on...grrr.

Stephen Slater Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Please people watch Chuck. It is a terrific show with great characters. Don't reward reality mediocrity. Reward talented writers, actors and producers that work hard to bring us quality TV each week. Washed up celebrities prancing around each week is not good TV. It's a sad indictment on the American viewing public that these shows are contuing to do well each week.

Paul Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

NBC is going to continue to lose viewers until they stop showing contempt for their audience. Its impossible to enjoy a program on NBC with the constant promos and advertisements covering the screen and distracting the audience. If NBC wants to keep its audience, they should give a clean picture for them to enjoy.

Paul Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

iamsam Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

most of the people that watch chuck download the show via bittorrent anyway, at least i do, i haven't watched tv at their usual times for about a year now.

Nate Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I agree with those saying Mondays are too packed. there are just too many competing shows to keep up. Networks should really think about moving to less crowded nights. i know they don't want shows trampled by Idol in the Spring, but Tues/Wed nights really need to be an option for some of these shows. And possible repeat viewings on Saturday nights or something that count for ratings.

Chris Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I'm sure part of the reason Terminator's viewers went down on last season is that they changed the name from the Sarah Connor Chronicles to the Connor Chronicles. I missed the first two episodes of this season because my DVR didn't pick up on it.

Enlightenment Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Who ever schedules the date/time of these shows should be fired!!!

I hate it when they put good shows up against other good shows, then immediately afterward all channels have shows that suck, because I just flip over to Cable channels.

All of the primary channels lose when they pull that move!

Fire the monkeys and hire some one with a brain to make better schedules!

Gre Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

For action and spy fans, and just all-around nerds, CHUCK is such a nice little confection of a show. I hope it sticks around.

Jen Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

I will be interested to see what Chuck's ratings are next week, when we don't have early access to the show online for free. I loved the episode, and I've even gotten my husband to start watching the show with me. http://popculturecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/

AfricanLivedit Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

I really enjoy Sarah Conner and cross my fingers it sticks around... I hate FOX... they cancel everything though... but each show takes a few to take off... and the season now is great... really good. Heroes is finally back in form too... I think it's MUCH better than season 1 and 2... finally we're seeing some action and Peter is being what we want him to be... People should come back to it... the best news series is mos def. True Blood and Fringe.

Ernesto Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I'm with Greg on this. Somebody dropped the ball and posted the Chuck episode on the NBC website days before it premired. I watched it online on Sat (or sunday cant remember exactly) and didn't bother to watch it when it aired.

Jeff Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

In the end who wants to watch a show that’s on for 2 months and then off for 9 months? It’s the standard with most shows now. They just can’t seem to get the episodes done. You can have all your excuses for why it is the case, but it still requires the viewer to have to wait for 9 months. If in the 9 months I find something else to do to fill my time then you will now have to persuade me to drop that activity to watch the show again. You might as well start from scratch.
The problem with some of the shows is that they had a novelty to being new and exciting stories. I am sorry to say but it seems as if Heroes will just be another Lost. It was great for a few episodes and then the story line just started to get old. They try not to reveal too much but just enough to keep you going. Instead of moving the story along at a better pace. I am sorry to inform the writers, but at the end of the season I can just download the whole season and get the whole story in one day. Even if it takes 2 years to complete a season. The same goes for Chuck, Eureka, and many of the other shows. In the mean time I have some very exciting new activities that are a lot more fun.
Catch you on the flip side!

Greg Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I completely agree with BobbyZ's comment. The only shows I watch are on Mondays. Between Chuck, Terminator and Heroes not to mention Monday Night Football, I can't even keep up using a Tivo. But the rest of the week I watch nothing else. Fix it, networks.

zanzy Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

Chuck is just not that funny or smart. Really tried to like it but...it's just too effin' boring.

Mark Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

You could watch the Premiere of Chuck from the website several days before it came on TV. I wonder how many people watched it early and how that affected viewership. I know I watched it on Saturday and didn't watch it again on Monday.

Erin Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

I agree, WATCH CHUCK! It's smart and funny, which isn't something everyone appreciates. Minds are being wasted watching "reality" shows. Sometimes, a little thinking is good for you.

BobbyZ Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I don't understand how any network that puts a show on Monday night is going to get good ratings Chuck, Terminator, MNF, HIMYM, Dancing with the Stars, Heroes, Prison Break, 2 and a half men, Gossip Girl, 1 tree hill, etc. How is anybody sopposed to get good ratings? This is why the good shows get cancelled. They need to get a clue. Why not move some of these shows Friday or Saturday night with the way the economy is more people are staying in on the weekends

brandy Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I watched chuck last season, the lead guy is cute and a good actor but it was a bit silly.

I ADORE life, I watched it last night and though "anyone who didn't watch this last season will be REALLY confused" but I thought it was a great episode. I can't wait for friday. I don't go out fridays, so I love good tv on friday nights! I used to watch Sci-Fi Friday a lot but they ruined that when they moved BSG to sundays.

I watched the new nightrider show on hulu.com last night, boy do they need a new director. Cheesey, cheese, cheesey. I was going to say it was a show for 14 year old boys until the two lead characters had to strip int he car or they would die if they didnt strip to their underwear. Then I was POSITIVE it was a show for 14 year old boys.

Joe Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

To many good shows to watch and or Tivo on Monday nights this year. I can't even go near CBS. Will have to wait for reruns to catch anything on that channel this year. It's ashame the Terminator show is not getting more viewers this year. It has turned into a really good show for season 2. But since it is more of a serialized show it will be hard for anyone new to pick it up now.

Mark Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

WATCH CHUCK PEOPLE.

Don Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

I work at night and Tivo most of the shows I watch since I am unable to watch at the actual network showing. "Life" was by far the best new show of last season. Since they are changing it to Friday nights, I am sure even more people will be forced to record Life since Monday is a stay at home night as opposed to Friday, a going out night. Perhaps rating companies should update their system to include Tivo/dvr watchers. Also, NBC could copy the cable networks by running a marathon of "Life" from last season since it has been so long between the last show last season and the first show this season. NBC, please don't take away another interesting, well-done show.

Denny Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

Life is one of the best drama shows on television and the fact that only 6 million viewers watched should tell the network something. Think about it, 6 million people watched the show. That's pretty impressive.

Joyce Bryant Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

We have been anxiously awaiting "Life's" return. The story line was interesting and provocative without being confusing. Only because we get TV Guide did we find out it was returning. A marathon of last season's shows would have been helpful for watchers to pick the details back up. It is well written and well acted - please don't take it away again!!!!!

jcpdiesel21 Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

How disappointing that Chuck's premiere numbers were down. Hopefully the numbers will bounce back up next week since the second episode won't be online in advance.

I agree that there is too much airing on Mondays at the same time. This is probably what is hurting these two shows.

JohnG Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

Oh yes...and where's Rose & the 22 yr old ex-wife when you REALLY need them.

JohnG Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 06:55 AM EST

My favorite show, 2 1/2 Men, needs to improve their quality. The first 2 shows weren't funny & they need to find a new niche for the Kid as he's no longer funny either. It's like the writers have lost their sense of humor.

j2talk Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 06:41 AM EST

the ratings could have slipped due to On Demand and online viewings...i know i caught CHUCK via On Demand and so skipped the premier episode on monday....hey football was on......

Jacob Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 04:46 AM EST

yeah, but the Chuck first episode has been online for a week I'm sure plenty of people saw it there

LifeLover Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 12:53 AM EST

FreeAgent said: "I don't understand the whole Monday-Friday episodes of Life. why not just show it at its normal time. ugh I love Life but I know stupid NBC is going to cancel it."

I am afraid you might be right, FreeAgent, but I hope not. Life was the best new show on television last year in my opinion. It got very little promotion by the network in 2007 (all the on-air ads/buzz went to Bionic Woman). This year, same deal. Tons of ads for Knight Rider, Chuck, and the Christian Slater show, almost nothing for Life, yet Life still drew in more viewers than Chuck. (And Life BEAT Boston Legal on Monday in preferred viewer demographics...Hey, EW, why not mention THAT amidst the gloom and doom?)

Anyway, I hope NBC is patient with Life because it is a great show that could be a long-term winner for them. Please promote Life some more, NBC! And don't burn off two episodes a week anymore, which might confuse the audience as to when the show is "really" on.

I have some unusual tv preferences, but many of the shows that I really like are on Monday nights. Can't we spread around some of the shows? I adore Life. It is one of the few shows that surprises me and is a satisfying watch. Also love Gossip Girl as a guilty pleasure.

Life and Chuck are two of my favorite shows and thus I had already watched their 1st eps on hulu. Looking foward to Friday's ep of Life as well.

The main problem that networks fail to realize with the advent of the DVR/Tivo, people are watching their favorite shows on their own shedules. I know I did. Since I work nights, I have to catch up on most of my favorite shows later that night or later in the week. The DVR has killed Live TV numbers on Nielsen.

Most people just don't have the time and patience to watch TV live especially with commercials. But the funny thing is that the commecials pay for these shows and if noone is watching them, then that's how shows end up getting slaughtered like Chuck, Life, Terminator and Prison Break.

Oh and I forgot to add that since my DVR can only record two things at once I have to watch the last half of MNF on my 13" tube TV instead of my 60" Sony while the scripted shows are recording. That really sux!
