'90210' ratings prove nostalgia pays

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

It's hard to resist the potent cocktail of '90s nostalgia and sexed-up fresh faces that The CW's new 90210 promised — and the ratings bear that out. Tuesday's series debut garnered 4.9 million viewers, making it the highest-rated premiere in network history among adults 18-49 and beating reigning buzz queen Gossip Girl's numbers from the previous night (by 1.5 million viewers!). Its audience also grew throughout most of the two-hour extravaganza of pill-popping, drink-swilling, and sex-act-in-parking-lot-having. The numbers, along with those for Gossip and One Tree Hill, signaled a promising start to The CW's pivotal third season, giving it momentum before facing real competition as other nets roll out their premieres in the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, summer programming remained in its waning days, with NBC's America's Got Talent winning the 8-10 p.m. block (with about 10.6 million viewers) and ABC's Wanna Bet ending its run at a weak 3.9 million viewers at 9 p.m. And NBC, for what it's worth, won the hour of Republican National Convention coverage at 10 p.m. with about 4.9 million viewers.

I loved the original Beverly Hills 90210 series and never missed a single episode. I am so excited about this new 90210 and look forward to it each week. I enjoy having some of the original characters, especially Kelly and I even like Brenda. I hope to see more of the original cast drop in for some episodes. But I also like the new cast members and look forward to getting to know each of them. The story line is great so far.

I'm 30-something, love-love-love the original series, and after watching this "new class," I am willing to give it a chance. Did anyone catch that Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez was the high school news anchor in one of the first scenes? Wonder if original cast member Andrea will be making a cameo appearance in an upcoming episide?...

Maeve, I recognized the girl that played Silver from a guest spot she did on Grey's Anatomy... She was blonde and played an Amish girl with an ovarian tumor.

I am a huge fan of the original 90210 and grew up watching it. I'll even catch a rerun on SoapNet when the mood strikes. I was excited when I heard about the spin-off but also a bit skeptical. I was only watching for the few glimpses of the old characters. I just wish those "glimpses" had been longer and more frequent. I was thrilled to see Jennie and Shannon again. I hope they continue to bring the old cast members back. While it was entertaining to watch the new cast, I doubt that I will continue to watch if the old 90210 cast doesn't continue to appear each week. In my opinion, keeping Shannon and Jennie on the show, as well as bringing Tori, Jason or Luke into the mix would insure the success they are depending on for the network.

Jessica Stroup was in the horror film The Hills Have Eyes Part Two. Thats where I know her from most of all. She was blonde and more curvy. She definitely looked better in that film than she does on 90210

Maeve Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Does anyone know who played Erin Silver? That actress looks so familiar. It's not on IMDB.

I was a fan of the original series and thought this new version was watchable with the potential for it to get better and better. The adult cast was good, but i think they should come to an agreement with Tori Spelling as her Donna Martin character was the heart of the original. The teen cast is fairy bland except for the shows lead actress Shenae Grimes who plays Annie. She is solid. One other thing- it didn't have the feel of the original but it was still a passable entertainment!

who cares about the bj at the beginning. its the modern 90210 and you know kids these days can be that scandalous....anyways...I loved every second of it...of course I'm a returning 90210 fan and I am really glad its back! Now I can concentrate on this drama rather than my own....lol

RRB Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I was a die hard 90210 fan. I loved the new show. Of course I likes the adult story lines more. But I was a little shocked that 4 minutes in the VERY adult content in the parking lot with a guy and a girl. Couldn't they show them making out? That would have been enough.

nicole Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

As someone who watched every episode of Beverly Hills 90210--I was a little skeptical. But I loved it and it was entertaining. I will watch it again.

Carrol Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

why is everybody all over this show its not that good, I almost threw up a little when i saw that somebody put up some "candid" pics of a cast private pool party.....get over yourselves

The pilot was very uneventful and I didn't find one character I really cared for except Kelly and Brenda and they won't be in it much.
The first episode was full of cliches and horrible dialogue.
Sure the ratings were big at first but this is no where as good as the original. The ratings will go down steadily each week.

Craig Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

The pilot really didn't impress me, but neither did the pilot for Chuck or Dirty Sexy Money and now they're two of my favorite shows; so I'm just gonna have to give the show time to develop and hopefully get better.

well - MY teen daughter really liked the show - she has no reference whatsoever to the original show from the 1990's. I only was able to watch the last half hour of the premiere episode. Does anyone know - if the CW plans to have a repeat showing of the 90210 premiere episode this coming weekend. they should - and I hope so !
pS - I really like Lori Loughlin - so glad to see her back on TV !also great to see Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty , too - yeay - something for the over 30 year olds !

Loop Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

I actually watched it LIVE and loved it!

Jamie Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Brian Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Michael H. Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Lauren Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

jen Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Jamie Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I really liked the new 90210. It took me back in time as I remembered the huge crushes over Luke Perry and Jason Priesley I had when I was younger. Question though: I've been online trying to find the name of the song that the girls sang while they were in Chorus practice. Does ANYBODY know the name of it? Thanks!
