'Supernatural,' 'Flashpoint' score sweet ratings

Categories: TV Ratings

On the final Thursday before the season premieres of higher profile series such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, and Survivor, the CW’s Supernatural made some news of its own. The show’s season 4 opener drew an average of 4 million viewers in the overnights, up a whopping 33 percent from its season 3 premiere last fall. (If you’re among the newcomers who flocked to the show last night, be sure to check out our Supernatural season-premiere recap, and our gallery of EWwy nominees, including series star Jensen Ackles.) Supernatural’s time-slot lead-in, Smallville, on the other hand, drew 4.4 million viewers for its season 8 premiere, a figure about 800,000 less than what it drew for its 2007 opener.

The news was good for another lower profile series, CBS’ Flashpoint — starring Veronica Mars dad Enrico Colantoni — which averaged a series-high 9.7 million viewers in the overnights. Flashpoint held onto 95 percent of the lead-in audience from a repeat episode of powerhouse CSI (10.2 million) and subsequently earned itself a 13-episode pickup by the network this afternoon.

Still, Flashpoint couldn’t stake a claim as the night’s biggest draw among first-run programs, as it averaged a mere 100,000 fewer viewers than the half-hour results show of NBC’s America’s Got Talent (9.8 million). (Read our recap of last night’s show, and every episode this season, at PopWatch’s America’s Got Talent page.)

Finally, over at Fox, viewers seemed to prefer angry culinary antics to human Tetris, as Kitchen Nightmares‘ audience of 6.1 million grew a hefty 30 percent out of lead-in Hole in the Wall (4.7 million).

I am SOOO happy for Supernatural.

Supernatural ROCKS! Last night’s episode was fantastic. And kudos to Jensen Ackles for his EWwy nomination. He’s a terrific actor.

  • Cara

Wow, that’s by far the best numbers they’ve ever pulled. Good news for the show.

  • darrin

that was still a solid rating average for smallville being its eighth year and all. its normal ratings are always around 4 million never falling below 3 million that i’ve noticed during its entire run. i can’t get into supernatural even though i’ve tried.

All the CW shows ratings would be a bit higher if HOUSTON had its power…im one of the 1.6million still w/o power. I missed Gossip Girls, 90210, Smallville I also missed Project Runway, Top Design and my novela Querida Enemiga! Ugh tonight will be 7 nights w/o pwr. . .its hell!

the cw newtwork only promotes two shows and i hate them both because of it (gossip girl & 90210)

So happy to see Supernatural’s premiere did decent numbers (for the netlet it’s on). It’s the only show on the CW I’ve found worth watching. It was a kick-arse premiere that really set the season up well going forward, so much better than last season’s. Given the lack of support/promotion from the CW, I’m pleasantly surprised it managed to do as well as it did.

Yay! Flashpoint has been a high point of my summer!

Holy Tax Accountant! Yay for Supernatural! One of the best TV shows that too few are watching. The season premiere was ten kinds of awesome. I hope that folks will stick around for more (though CW does the show no favors with its timeslot, or total lack of promotion).

  • Rachel

Yah for Supernatural! It is the only show worth watching on CW. Plus one of two shows I watch period.

I’m so glad to read this. I always watch Supernatural. I’ve never tuned in to CSI or Grey’s and am only a casual Office viewer – so that one sits on the DVR till I feel like checking it out.
Supernatural is hands down the most original show on Thursday nights!
