The fall season continues to roll in in drips and drabs, and last night, Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the new kid on the ratings block after airing its second-season premiere at 8 p.m. According to overnight data, the debut snagged 6.3 million viewers, a huge 36 percent decline from its first-season average of 9.8 million viewers. Things may only get worse for Terminator when it goes head-to-head with ABC’s powerhouse Dancing with the Stars and CBS’ s decently rated comedies The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother in two weeks.
Last night’s 8 p.m. hour also saw some 8 million viewers flock to NBC’s Deal or No Deal, while the second episode of The CW’s Gossip Girl dropped just 200,000 viewers from last week to 3.2 million, enough to again win its key demos of adults 18-34, women 18-34, and females 12-34, which is even juicier than an overall-viewership win to CW execs. Finally, sealing its fate as somewhat of a failed summer experiment, ABC’s drab High School Musical: Get in the Picture had its finale, finishing its season with a paltry 4.1 million viewers.
In other Monday night news, at 9 p.m., The CW’s One Tree Hill bested its Gossip Girl lead-in by 100,000 viewers, after its premiere last week actually came in slightly below Gossip Girl’s. Fox’s Prison Break pulled in 6.5 million viewers,
improving over its premiere episode by 300,000 viewers, and seems to be
slowly inching toward the 7.5 million viewers it averaged last season.
But, again, the competition hasn’t arrived yet — Heroes debuts in two weeks. But maybe the rising tide (i.e. Heroes) will lift all ships (i.e. Prison Break)?
As for 10 p.m., it was really no shocker: A repeat episode of CBS’s CSI: Miami bested NBC’s Dateline and ABC’s CMA Music Festival, took the hour with 7.4 million viewers. Not too shabby for an already-ran.

Uh-oh. SARAH CONNER CHRONICLES season one aired during the writers strike, which I think really bolstered its numbers. If it’s at 6m at its second season premiere against REPEATS… I fear what will happen once DANCING, CHUCK and the CBS comedies enter into the equation. Hasta La Vista, Baby?
i for one tivo-ed T:SCC and won’t be watching for a few days, i also time shift GG and will be doing the same for ANTM and a few other things….would love to see these numbers included somehow, not to mention downloads at itunes store where last nights ep of GG is the #1 tv show (and T:SCC season 2 isn’t even out)
just saying….
Keep in mind it’s 6m against repeats AND MNF on ESPN. I personally Tivo’d T:SCC and watched that.
It’s a shame the ratings don’t show ESPN’s numbers… But i suppose the excuse is that not everyone has cable.
T:SCC does a good job of filling in the gap of decent hardish SciFi. My wife and I like it.
It’s a great show. However, if the network wants it to find an audience, they should definitely move it. Dancing with the Stars and MNF will kill it. I think Friday or Sunday would work. The X-Files in the 90’s thrived on those days.
Didn’t Manson look out of place as the T-1000 (and I don’t just mean her stint as an urinal) in this series? And what is the deal with having Sarah Conner crash multiple vehicles in the episode? Are car crashes what we want to be watching all the time?
it’s a shame.. it really is a great show.
The ratings have always been joke as the sampling is so small that they really do not reflect what is watched. Plus now with all the different ways of watching – direct tv, internet, tivo, dvr and even the now old-fashioned taping of tv, who really watches things live. Personally I tivo’d it and watched it Tuesday night late and enjoyed it. I don’t watch the other shows mentioned except Chuck. Strangely, if it was on the Sci-Fi network, the ratings it received would be great. The network should move it though – perhaps even putting it at a later time slot.
I also note that the networks’ starting the season in dribs and drabs probaby hurts all the shows. Maybe the fall season should wait until fall is actually here. Even if everything was not ready to premiere, people would expect it then.
Terminator is a great show, if only FOX would promote it and place it properly. As it stands the show has a huge contingent of DVR viewers. This means people want to watch, they just can’t during that time slot.
But yet how has FOX started off this season? They dumped all their advertising on Fringe just praying for an X-Files remake, and what did it get them? 9 million viewers? I think House beats that in re-runs. And with DVR numbers Sarah Connor (last season) beat that as well.
I am a big fan of this show and have been waiting patiently for the second season, but somehow i didn’t see one advertisement for the second season premiere. they can’t expect much in terms of ratings if they aren’t going to even provide the most basic level of informational promotions. I don’t think it’s the world’s greatest show but it’s at least as good as what else is out there. I hope they give it a decent run.
This truly is a great show, and my favorite on tv right now – they advance the plot very quickly, the acting is great, and the effects are movie-like. I suspect a lot of people just don’t “get it”, and probably don’t get sci-fi in general. I fear the show is headed to the same syndicated Sci-Fi Channel fate as Dark Angel – I just hope they can get another season or two out of it.
