It’s a dark day for Team Edward. Stephenie Meyer, bestselling author of the Twilight franchise, has announced on her website that she will no longer continue writing Midnight Sun — a companion novel that describes the Twilight events from hunky vampire Edward’s perspective — after an early, incomplete draft was posted illegally online.
As Meyer writes on her website, "I’d rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun…My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely."
As for the leak itself, Meyer writes, "I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn’t mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control."
UPDATE: Little, Brown Books released the following statement on Tuesday afternoon:
"A partial draft containing chapters of Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer has been leaked on the Internet without the knowledge or permission of either Stephenie Meyer or Little, Brown. Although these early chapters were never intended to be published in their current form, Stephenie Meyer has decided to authorize the posting of these rough, initial chapters on her website (www.stepheniemeyer.com) in fairness to her true, loyal fans.
While no decisions have been made at this time regarding the publication of Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer is currently at work on other writing projects. Little, Brown looks forward to our continued publishing relationship with Stephenie Meyer and, like her many fans, we are eager to experience her next literary creation."

I think it is very selfish that she will not finish the book for something that isn’t that big of deal. There would be people who would kill for their stories to peak so much interest, and its a slap in the face to the fans who loved the books! Good luck with your next project, but I probably won’t read anything. You might have a fight with your husband and then quit writing the rest of the story!

Please finish Midnight Sun!!!!!! I am a huge fan. I didn’t want Breakingdawn to finish or any of the rest. I was looking forward to reading Midnight Sun. Some people are idiots but everyone else shouldn’t be punished for what they do. Continuing the love story will fill your heart with happiness and love again.

It was such a disappointment. We become friends with the characters and we know there’s more. Please reconsider. I know how hurt you must be. I just finished reading all four of the Twiglight books in a week. I found Midnight Sun on the Ms. Meyers official sight and read it in one sitting. I must agree, please finish the book for all the fans who love Edward so much! I would love to see a companion for all 4 books from Edwards side of the story. I don’t think I have ever become this involved with a character before. I truely hope that the Ms. Meyers will please her fans and continue the saga of this wonderful vampire that we can’t seem to get enough of!

I am in agreement with everyone on this site. I would love to see you finish Midnight Sun. To hear from Edwards perspective during the time he is away from Bella would be fascinating. I am enthralled by this side and can’t wait to get more. I would love to hear Edwards side on Jacob as well and how he thinks through what is going on with Bella and Jacob. I have always been an avid reader, however vampire books were not on my list (I always remembered vampires as played by Peter Cushion in the old movies) and so these kinds of books did not appeal to me, however my son brought my a copy of Twilight for one of my birthdays and I was hooked, I couldn’t believe how different the Cullens were to the vampire I had grown up with. I brought the rest of the books in the saga and since then I have read them over and over again I am totally hooked and I have not been able to concentrate on reading any other books since. The Twilight Saga is the best set of books I have ever read and reading the same books from Edwards perspective would be even better,
So please Stephanie for all your fans, continue with Midnight Sun.
I’ve never been much of a reader before but when I sat down to read the Twilight Series I couldn’t put them down. I finished all four books in less than a month! I didn’t even know that there was a Midnight Sun book and when I found out I was super excited. Then I heard what happened and I was crushed. I’ve never invested so much time into something and I just feel extremely empty without getting to finish! I hope Stephinie descides to finish for millions of her fans sakes!!
