Exclusive: 'Rock Band 2' offering new slate of full albums

Aug 28, 2008, 07:20 AM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: Games, Music, Music Biz

Foofighters_lWhile there's been a lot of talk over the last few years about the inevitable death of the album format, the videogame industry doesn't appear to be listening. On Sept. 12, Metallica will release a gameplay version of their new record, Death Magnetic, through Guitar Hero, and two days later, Rock Band 2 debuts, and with it, the promise of 500 tracks by year's end. Stocking the digital bins, EW.com has learned exclusively, will be seminal full albums by Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magik), Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking), Megadeth (Peace Sells... But Who's Buying) and Stevie Ray Vaughn (Texas Flood), along with a specially-compiled No Doubt Best Of collection. All are slated to roll out in the coming months, according to MTV Games.

With the first Rock Band game selling over 3.5 million game units and 21 million songs since it first hit the market in November 2007, the appetite for downloadable content seems to be insatiable. The game began offering full album downloads earlier this year, kicking off with Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance and later adding the Pixies Dootlittle and the Cars' self-titled debut album. "We're surprised by how many people opted to get full albums," says Paul Degooyer, Senior Vice President at MTV Games. "But it’s a good value proposition. Talk about something that’s been lost and forgotten."

In addition to new songs and instruments, Rock Band 2 will also sport a new look. After the jump, check out an exclusive sneak peek at the game's new opening sequence.

2speedtom Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 01:54 AM EST

Come on some Korn, Rob Zombie AND MOST IMPORTANT !!!!! "RAMMSTEIN" that my friends would kick some serious a$$!

Eric H Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 10:59 PM EST

i cannot believe how many people say that rise against is bad. im not saying people cannot have their own opinion, but people say it like it is fact. personally, rise against is my absolute favorite band, and i wish there was more of them in the game. they are one of the few bands that i can hear a song and instantly know who it is and what song it is, because they are unique, and their songs dont all sound the same. i dunno, just makes me mad when people state things like they are facts when theyre not.

Five Finger Death Punch - The Way of the Fist
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Led Zeppelin - IV

Also, why do people like Tool so much? I don't think they're that great.

DTosta Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:49 PM EST

What's the word on Van Halen for Rock Band? Is it true they are exclusively on Guitar Hero?

Try putting on Incubus - one of the 2 newer albums because the other earlier albums would have too much profanity. And morning view doesnt have that problem, but its boring. Definitely A Crow Left Of The Murder... or Light Grenades

Jaison Biagini Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

I have both games.
i like playing the drums on GHWT(a bit more realistic) but everything else is better on rock band! the game itself is better. the organization of the music is better, the tour is better. as far as music goes RB kills GHWT. i have 19 ac/dc tracks, priest, the crue, new rock, old rock, chile peppers, foo fighters nirvana. a huge and diverse playlist. i have 458 songs in RB. 90 on GHWT. every week RB gives you 9+ to choose from. only 3 for GHWT and the racounteers?? that's lame! get both, but RB will be in your ps3/360 way more often.

Magnus Lord Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

That guy who says "If No Doubt's rock then I'm the pope" Then he musi be the pope! THEY ARE ROCK NOOB! ALSO THEY ARE SKA, REGGAE AND FUNK!

Magnus Lord Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Yay! No Doubt! Seriously what's wrog with people arguing over particular types of music? it's just a game! The only music i hate is Rap, Mainstream R&B and Teenybop-Disney crap.

D Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Hey Kade, lack of good music is a personal preference. Besides, when comparing the amount of songs Rock Band has (downloadable content, RB 1 songs, and RB 2 songs), Guitar Hero is an absolute joke. Learn to argue dumbf**k.

Kario Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Kade is a moron. He listed bands that aren't in either game except for Guns N Roses which is in Rock Band 2. Good job.

Rock Band > Guitar Hero World Tour

kade Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I HAVE TO SAY, THE LACK OF GOOD MUSIC ON ROCKBAND IS A BIG PROBLEM. WHAT ABOUT FUEL, BLUE OCTOBER, GUNS AND ROSES, AEROSMITH AND SOME FEMALE VOCALISTS!!! I GOING TO GET GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR....

OneNippleNinja Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist/Around the Fur
Queens of the Stone Age - Any one of their albums, but preferably Songs for the Deaf.
Alien Ant Farm - ANThology
Chevelle - Vena Sera
Disturbed - The Sickness
Fair to Midland - Just the song Dance of the Manatee.
Faith No More - Album of the Year
Finger Eleven - Self Titled
The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
Kasabian - Self Titled
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip or The Downward Spiral
The Offspring - Americana
Priestess - Hello Master
Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angeles
System of a Down - Toxicity
The White Stripes - Elephant

Just a few albums i would like to see. But songs from ANY of these artists would be awesome.

Garret Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Some of the most enjoyable songs are the ones you can chill too, and of course ones that many people know the words too:
Nickleback
Green Day
Maroon 5
3 Doors Down
Pink Floyd
Bush
Needs more alternative especially present day. I am personally not a big fan of a lot of this emo garbage that is out there right now.

METALLICA - BLACK ALBUM

Mic Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I think some The Used would be great in Rock Band. And stop saying that the bands that other people say they would like to see in Rock Band are bad because everybody has it's taste in music and if your not happy, just don't buy those songs!!

devin Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

k...first of all rise against.,.my be a great band but how the hell can u compare them to other bands being talked about in here...its a totally different type of music and a total different fan base thats like throwin britany spears into a metal fan base and tellin us shes good..i think whats needed is some. children of bodom, hatebreed, 3inches of blood..just something thats a challange..im gettin bored of all the downloadable songs that are very simple to play

Joe Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Megadeth countdown to extinction(their best album hands down)
freak SEETHER

ALICE IN CHAINS & LED ZEPPELIN!!! Rise Against best band ever ? That is the worst music I have ever heard.I give all music a chance, but this was like someone shoved a big nutty poo in my ear.

Jake Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Some korn and pantera and slipknot

Ross Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

I like all the new stuff so far.

As far as rock album releases go, I would recommend the following:

Econoline Crush: Brand New History
Sass Jordan: Rats
Tragically Hip: Up To Here

(oooh just realized a bit of a Canadian theme here, lol)

Darren Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Needs some master track Iron Maiden and some Over Kill, Pro-Pain, and Iced Earth

James Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

Anything by Pantera would be AWESOME!!!

Jay Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

I agree with Zack. Rise Against is a horrible band. Most of their fanbase are 14 year old girls! Mootallica (sorry its catchy) woops their ass anyday! What Rock band truly needs is some TRIVIUM!! Chimaira wouldnt hurt either. I would love to see someone beat Pull Harder On The Strings of your Martyr on vocals expert.

mike champ Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

We need albums like Kiss alive 1 & 2. Song like Black Magic Woman, Smoke on the Water and Hotel California. Group like led Zepplin, ACDC, Pink Floyd can be really good too. I am ready to buy all these kind of good stuff. Have fun everybody.

david Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

needs more nirvana 4 sure and incubus ,then there is faith no more, radiohead ,maybe some linkin park and blink 182
..would definitely spice up the game a lil

Adam Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

To Zack and Steve,
Rise Against is definitely one of the greatest bands to come along for quite some time now. Starting as a garage band from Chicago to getting where they are now resembles Nirvana if you ask me. At least they stay true to punk rock. "Cry baby vegans"? Only half of the band are vegans, and they choose to be because they simply don't believe in the killing, little own, eating of animals. That's like making fun of someone for believing in God. They are quite possibly the best writers of the 21st century. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of music, but you cannot tell me bands like Metallica or Dream Theatre(any metal really), to even the 50 Cents of today' songs have any meaning. Sure RA could babble on about shooting people for money, or some nightmarish creatures, if they want to go entirely mainstream. But they stay true to what they believe. They address problems that affect everyone(ie.War,Poverty,Discrimination, Animal Cruelty). We need more bands like RA if nething.

voodoo2 Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

hey AB, no need to be afraid of metal. we don't care about all of these bands you just spewed out. this game isn't a history lesson. it's about having a good time. yes i would love some fleetwood mac, some prince, and so many others, but don't try to deny that metal is where this generation is at. i'm right there with you about teaching the youngens a thing or two about the history of music, but if you want too play peter tosh or the toots, call some of your buddies over and have a real jam session! bye the way, if youd rather listen to charlie brown jr. instead of godsmacks first album, maybe this game isn't intended for people like you!

James Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

I cannot believe we haven't gotten Flogging Molly yet on these games. "Black Friday Rule" is absolutely perfect for the Rock Band series.

allan Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

hotel californiaaa

Zack Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

Rise Against is complete garbage, nothing but repetitive chords, the band is nothing but a bunch of vegan crybabies. "...one of the greatest bands of our time"...really?...probably one of the worst bands...ever

Steve Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

Hey Kyle,

Rise Against is one of the greatest bands of our time. Get a clue shithead. I'd hate to think of what bands you consider good.

Mrhavok Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 06:03 AM EST

allright. to all ofyou people who think Death MAgnetic is goingto be on RB you are wrong. Why do youthink Enter Sandman didnt make it on the song export from RB1 to RB2? cause GUITAR HERO owns the Metallica rights for Guitar hero:Metallica.

Also We need ALL HOPE IS GONE ALBUM!!!

Slipknot! Slipknot!

taylor ryan Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

Yeah!! definetely some TRIVIUM, and they need to make like a "10 best songs of grunge" pack local h, better than ezra, the nixons, screaming trees, ugly kid joe,bush.. etc etc

John Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

They should add, Crossfade- Cold, A perfect circle- The outsider, Rise Against- Prayer Of A Refugee, Sum 41- In Too Deep, Audoslave- Like a Stone, Staind- For you, Metallica- Seek And Destroy.

kevin Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

they shud definately put some trivium, killswitch engage, bullet for my valentine, more linkin park,atreyu,a7x,pantera,slayer,black label society, megadeth, opiate for the masses, rem, dats all I can think of for now

zeeman Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Guys - lay off Metallica requests, they are done with RB, if you want Metallica you are going to have to buy Guitar Hero World Tour. And for those that haven't heard, AC/DC is an exclusive artist for Rock Band, 18 songs coming Nov. 2nd. :)

musicfan Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 05:57 AM EST

FORGOT some more how about Stevie Ray Vaughan, Van Halen older stuff.

musicfan Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 05:53 AM EST

more older metallica.
what about JOE STATRANI?
need some better all around songs, punk, real rock, hard rock, speed metal i.e. Pantera

Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

I personally would like to see more metal. Dragonforce is too intense and Slayer doesn't exactly have E+ esrb rating lyrics for RB but some Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Arsis (maybe too intense on the drums), Sanctity (The Shape of Things would be an awesome song) and WERE IS THE BLS? BLACK LABEL SOCIETY SHOULD BE IN THERE!!!!

brian Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

they need U2, seether, puddle of mudd, atreyu, slipknot, three days grace, 3 doors down, and KORN!

A B Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

I can understand running U2's name through the mud if you dislike their music...but to then claim they're not a real rock band and then state that a real rock band resembles Weezer...well lets just say stupid people make me laugh

Joseph Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

I would love to see some Quiet Riot actually ha ha ha. Bang Your Head, and Come on Feel the Noize

Waqman Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Oh, another loser bashing U2 trying to sound so superior. Yeah, face it you fool. U2 is a good band, you may not like the preachiness of Bono, but still the band has had some amazing albums (particularly Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby).

Trevor Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

U2? come on, no U2. U2 is like the worst sorriest excuse for a rock band there is.
I would say more weezer and pretty much anything BUT U2 ha

More Cheap Trick please

sduk72 Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 04:41 AM EST

i think they put behind blue eyes on simply because pretty much every band that plays live these days has a moment when either the singer goes off stage to change costume, drink , towel down or a guitar play goes off or the drummer etc , just for a short break while someone either talks for 5 mins, the guitar player plays a random song on his own or a solo or you get a drum solo , its cool to have that in a rock band set list , makes it feel more like a real gig , except people aint throwing bottles or urine at you! well atleast not in my house lol . besides as DLC you dont have to pick those songs if you want to go full tilt , i guess its all about personal preference. OH my wife said can she have some amy winehouse on rock band LOL

SDUK72 Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 04:34 AM EST

I would love to see some Kings of leon on rock band , maybe even the Darkness. Songs that are fun to have on in the car that you sing your head off too or bang the steering wheel like a demented drummer are always good. I play rock band with my wife and my brother and his wife and the girls are always saying we need more fun tracks. AC/DC would kick ass too , what about GNR? the Rolling stones...hendrix....pearl jam...zeppelin and even some early fleetwood mac, get some blues on, hell just put every song on known to man , that would be cool LOL!

Patrick Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 02:30 AM EST

As for kickass songs not being in Rock Band because they don't fit. I agree just because a song is awesome means it will work in Rock Band. However I don't think long instrumental or vocal sections are a bad thing. Yeah, Behind Blue Eyes... not a lot for the drummer to do, so perhaps not the best choice. But the game is meant to allow players to feel like they are in a band. Bands make all different kinds of music and some use lots of guitar, vocal and drum solos. I don't mind a short break from playing while a solo is going on. When we play we use those moments to act stupid or try to mess each other up, i.e. we have fun! Which is what the game is also about.

Patrick Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

@Kyle etc...

I love it when some music elitist states how just because music is popular its somehow always crap. Yeah being popular doesn't make it good music but are the Beatles crappy musicians who made crap? Or Led Zeplin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles, etc.?I think not. They were pretty popular.
I personally love music and appreciate songs for their merit, the effort that goes into making them by the musician(s) as well as the production effort. If the end product sounds great why then is it crappy? Just because it catches on with the general public?
I've known many a musician and unfortunately it seems that the ones who feel the way you do (although I am not venturing a guess as to whether you are a musician) are just really bitter that they haven't been able to achieve what the mainstream artists have. You see its the attitude that they know what good music is more than the people they are suppose to be making music for.
IMHO its a very elitist and arrogant position to take.

You guys need to get some van halen man, we need to unleash some eddie.

Chris B. Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

I agree with you Kyle, although there already is a lot of that in the game already with songs like Behind Blue Eyes, ...And Justice For All, Foreplay (Long Time), Won't Get Fooled Again, the list goes on. All of these songs are good songs but all have very long instrumental sections or very long vocal sections where the whole band cannot all be involved at once. Luckly for the vocalists they have the stupid rhythem hits for the tamborine.

wightrash Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

Just listened to "Momma's Boy" by "Chromeo". It's a little different, but man, it would rock that game hardcore!

chris arnot Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

even still you can say that there isnt any LZ songs that would be perfect for rock band? In that case they should release metropolis Pt2:scenes from a memory as an album DL ...... that would make me cream my jeanz

Sam Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

ok seriously the reason they don't have country or hip hop on ROCK band is because it is a ROCK band not a country band a ROCK band.

Kyle Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

Why do a lot of people playing Rock Band whine about music that isn't in the game? Harmonix knows what they're doing. They can't just put songs that are awesome based solely on the awesomeness. Look at Pepper, by the Butthole Surfers (a lot of you might think it's called Avalanche); that song is awesome, but would be TERRIBLE on Rock Band. It has long, quiet verses with vocals and no real heavy instruments. They listen to the consumer, but they're also musicians and understand what good music is versus what popular music is. I'm still pissed that Disturbed and Rise Against are in the new game, but they need to have variety because a lot of people playing Rock Band don't know what good music is, so they want that nonsense in there.

Case in point, popular music is almost never good music, QED.

Chris B. Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

"The band, specifically Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, is not comfortable giving gaming companies access to the group's master recordings -- a necessary step in adding the band to any game."

Quoted from:
http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/led-zeppelin-un.html

This sucks because I really like both Led Zep and Pink Floyd. I only play the drums on Rock Band and live in an apartment where it is impossible to have a real drum set. Granted the Rock Band drum controller does not give you the real feeling of a drum kit due to set up, reach, reaction, intensity, so on so forth. But it's the best thing there is for $89.99+tax and you do learn to keep different times with each individual limb... which is pretty much the first step.

Jeffgo Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Where are:

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
U2
The Doors
AC/DC ( more please )...

Armani Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

More KISS songs!! How about "Destroyer" "Dynasty" or "Alive!" there are so many awesome and fun KISS albums and songs out there. Harmonix should consider it.

Nee Nee Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Just pre-ordered RB2. Amazon actually still shows a release date of Sept 14 (for those who said it was delayed), but Target shows the release date as Oct 19. Really glad there will be more Foo Fighters. More Muse would be great!

ummm... anybody remember "dire straits". the album with "sultans of swing", "lions", "down to the waterline". i enjoy many types of music, and its my opinion that this album would be great fun to play on all instrumments. all the heavy stuff is cool, but, if you play expert drums, well, i break the equipment too often on that stuff(just bust yellow and blue drum pads) =-[. There are a hundred other bands, but Dire Straits FTW!

T.O. Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 07:36 AM EST

See, those bands are all great, but what I and one of the harmonix developers are waiting for is some Dredg! I've asked for it a couple times and the developer told me he bugs the people who choose what music to put in at LEAST once a week. If you've never heard of dredg, you might want to go check them out. dredg.com is their site, but you can get some free songs (the stuff that's generally not on an album) at dredgonline.com

Just one very important question. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET THE LED OUT!?

jamie Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

Man I'm sick to death of GH getting all the cool songs and RB getting all the CRAP nobody's ever heard of or punk. I've been BEGGING for more 80's rock, SRV, Clapton stuff that CREATED drum/guitar jams. I'm tired of pop, punk and garbage. Enough already. I've invested a small fortune in this game and my 12 year old won't even play it anymore because the songs, in large part, suck. No Doubt??? Give me a break! If that's rock, then I'm the friggin pope. And if Metallica's new album is anything like their last piece of trash, I'll never pick up the RB Drumsticks again. Enough is enough. Bring back ROCK!!!!!!!

Daniel Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

John Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST
