David Cook recording with Green Day producer

Aug 4, 2008, 05:02 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: American Idol, In the studio, Music, Music Biz

Davidcook_l David Cook has promised to make a rock record that's true to himself, and the American Idol winner has confirmed that the studio maestro tasked with helping him realize that goal is Rob Cavallo. The producer has already lent his talents to high profile projects from My Chemical Romance, Kid Rock, and, most extensively, Green Day, including their Grammy Award-winning album American Idiot, and Cook is confident that Cavallo is the right person for his upcoming release. "I think he's a great producer with the kind of sound that I want," Cook tells EW.com. "And in talking to him, he's just a good guy. Like the song selection I had on the show, Rob just fit."

The two are currently squeezing in studio time whenever the Idol summer tour allows, and Cook still plans to release the album in mid-November. As previously reported, Cook has had writing sessions with Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida and Collective Soul's Ed Roland, but there's one person who isn't involved with the album: industry vet Clive Davis, the man who executive produced several Idols' debuts, but whose role at SonyBMG, where he's currently Chief Creative Officer of SonyBMG Worldwide, has shifted. "I never heard his name brought up," Cook said.

That may free up Cook to make his own decision about whether to include his Idol finale single, "The Time of My Life," on the album. (Being forced to include a generally-sappy but familiar song on a decidedly rock debut had been a bone of contention for one previous winner, Taylor Hicks, who reportedly resisted having "Do I Make You Proud" on his album.) Cook hasn't yet made the call about the single. "It's not like there's any resistance to [the song]," he says. "My goal is to make a cohesive record, and I don't want any song to stick out like a sore thumb. But in every meeting that I've had with 19 [Management] and RCA [Records], they've been very supportive of what I want to do with my record."

Yeah, I think "gimmick" is the appropriate word to use.

Squirrelly_girl Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

You Archuletta fans just can't let it go that David Cook won by such a huge margin. David Cook won because he was the best performer on AI. David Cook has a wonderful voice, and he a marvelous song-writer, too. I prepurchased his new album on Amazon and can't wait 'till I receive it in the mail. I hear that David Cook has a new gimmick with a "Light On" purchase now that lights up your ipod or cell phone. Something to use at your next concert instead of burning your fingers with your lighter. David Cook has many fans that will continue to buy his music. I can't wait to see what his new album will sound like. We've had a taste with "Light On" which is receiving more and more airplay, and it hasn't even been released yet. Can't wait. I'm so excited for David Cook. I'll watch him on SNL 1 Nov, and on VH1 countdown on 22 Nov.

tony Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

there just aint no match up between david cook and david archuleta. cook is just getting started, archie has a gold single and almost complete with his album and additionally he has a tv show performance with nickelodean icarly. so beat this out david cook. you folks are gonna see a repeat of the rubben studdard and clay atkins, who comes out on top as a performer and money maker

Deanna Lucido Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

I have not watched American Idol and went with a friend to their concert last week becuase she had an extra ticket. wow, David Cook blew me away! I love the Foo Fighters and He did Justice on My Hero, He can rock, I hope he can write some original material and I look forward to his album.

Veronica Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

David Cook is a rocker and that's the kind of "record" we know he'll put out but having seen him perform during this season I've learned he's just not your run of the mill rocker. He is going to be HUGE. I expect his album will take the world by storm. You won't be skipping to the next song either. TOML should not be included and should remain as a single and left as the AI coronation song. He's gotten as much mileage as he could on that one. I liked it because it was the song he sang after he won. I am patient and don't need a single to come out either--just hit us with the album when it's ready. He won't need the hard sell either. I am surprised TPTB allowed a runner-up to release a new single first but the kid crooned his way to 2nd place singing ballads. That was what he was programmed to do but now he puts out a tween/pop song and isn't what people saw during the season. Why didn't he do more age-appropriate songs and now switches to generic tween? Enough of tween/pop!

emily Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

I can't speak for all DC fans. I can only speak for myself. I am saddened to see David Cook being pushed aside in favor of more of the same old Disney pop. The man is a talented individual who deserves an opportunity to have HIS music heard and promoted (enough with the Magic Rainbow already). I am utterly baffled as to why someone with so much potential is being completely ignored by those who should be helping to build his career. What a waste!
At least the fans who followed him on AI are aware of the fact that he will get an album and that he has an excellent producer. I anxiously await the results of that collaboration (which will no doubt be thrown out into the market with little fanfare, just to complete the "bus" accident).

heather Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

i believe david cook is going to be HUGE. bigger than daughtry, and even carrie underwood, as well as kelly clarkson. he'll be the modern day michael jackson, (just the popularity, duh) or even the likes of prince. not his music, just the legendary following of fans. i also think he would have the ability to win an oscar as he jokingly said he wanted to win along with a grammy. did anyone else notice that he is profoundly funny, gorgeous, and has amazing facial expressions and bodily gestures?

BeeBee Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

OMG when David Cook sang, Music Of The Night during the Andrew loyd Webber night, i almost cried!! I love him and he has an amazing voice!! My whole family wanted him to win!

davidcook Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

david cook rocks!!! and for the record, he is way better than david archuleta! i cant wait for the album!

zosyn Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

WOW...I'm so happy to hear these things...Congratulations my idol. Can't wait to get a copy.

SoulSurprise Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

David is lucky he's not saddled with Clive Davis who nearly destroyed two Idol's careers.

minda Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Ilove everything about David Cook...I will support you my idol whatever things you will have...CD, Solo Concert (Hope you keep MAVID on your concert,LOL),and everything...You're always be my baby.

Brandon Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:42 AM EST

Nice choice man...the Big R.C.....nicely done. Everything will work out great bro.

egyptiancooker Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

Cook fan here. He was my vote for Idol...but I've gotta say I love music enough that I cannot confine myself to one artist. I like Archie too..and look forward to hearing him on the radio. Won't buy his album probably, but I look forward to having him around.

I will probably buy ever Cook CD that is produced. Best Idol yet. Sorry, Carrie. And I do like you too.

bilabod Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

It would be a good combination for Cook and Cavallo and it will "BOMB".
Can't wait for the release of the Album. David Cook you are the Best Idol so far.

bilabod Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Bronwyn Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

He is AMAZING! :P It sucks that I'm the only person that I know that actually prefers him over Archie.

sarcastic girl Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:31 PM EST

"Now, how about a songwriting collaboration/duet: Cookie + Billie Joe Armstrong? YOWZA!!"

That suggestion makes me a little weak in the knees.

Rob Cavallo is a fantastic choice for producer on Cook's album. I think it shows that the whole thing is being taken seriously. I would love to read an interview with Mr. Cavallo regarding how they ended up working together. I love Greenday and David Cook. I'm a happy camper.

I think it would be weird to include "Time of My Life" on the album, it's not really David's style and I think most people get that. I heard my local radio DJs discussing that back when the song first premiered.

T.B. Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

I agree with Beth: Cook + Cavallo is a match made in heaven.
Now, how about a songwriting collaboration/duet: Cookie + Billie Joe Armstrong? YOWZA!!

RCook Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Hey David, way to go ,in my area we can hardly wait to hear the new album.

Dominic Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

Good for Cook for scoring a producer like Rob Cavallo. From what I know of Cavallo he doesn't work with "just anybody," so either David Cook is the real deal, or the Idol machine is throwing a lot of $$ and leverage behind him. Either way I would say this bodes well for his success.

Julie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Please let the fanwars go before they even start. Live and let live, right? To each their own.
All I know is - I can't wait to hear new music from David Cook. Hurry up November!

regulator Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

OATMEAL WITH A BLAND SIDE --> Hmmmm.. I 'll play along... :) is the inference that if one has a goal, works hard to attain that goal, devotes time, attention and energy to said goal, that this somehow diminishes the persons accomplishments? Makes them ... "test tubish?" Would Tiger Woods be considered Test tubish? Michael Jordan? Venus/Serena Williams?Larry Bird? Let's see... focus, hard work, committment, strong work ethic, desire to succeed against all odds... Count me in w /the "tubeys" !

OATMEAL WITH A SIDE OF BLAND Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

What I really like about David Cook is that he wasn't created in a test tube and "bred" to be a pop singer. Not naming any names, just sayin.

Dee Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

Cooks working with some great names. I am sure the album will sell. But me, I'm just "not hooked on Cook." I think his vocals leave alot to be desired. Michael Johns has much better vocals. But I wish Cook the best of luck!

hindags Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

For those of you who haven't heard Cook's pre-idol music, you're in for a treat--you can go to his official fan site and hear or download (per the site, David has given permission to share since the music is not available otherwise). There also are youtube versiona--search for Analog Heart or Axium

Steph Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

I trust David to make the right decision with the Magic Rainbow song.

Colleen Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

David -- PLEASE DO NOT include "The Time of My Life!" It is NOT you. It was written to win a contest -- and that it did. It will stick out like a sore thumb. You are SO much better than that song is! PLEASE, I beg you -- don't do it!

Rob Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

If the album will be good, I think I'll buy it! I liked him and Brooke on AI..

NO to Chris Sligh Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Clive was "right" about My December because he aggressively sabotaged the marketing of that album instead of allowing people to make their own decisions about it.

suzeet Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Geez, it's sad to read the number of negative comments about Clive Davis, a man who has had many, many more hits than misses. Hey, he was right about Kelly Clarkson's third album. Give him credit for all that he has done for the music industry. The man launched the careers of Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd - the list goes on and on of rock legends - and I'm sure that AI would not have gotten the legitimacy it has without his involvement. So he isn't perfect - which of you are? (no, this was not written by Clive Davis himself)

Dan S Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

This is one album release that I'm really looking forward to this fall. "The Black Parade" is one of my favorite records of the past few years, so I can't wait to see what Cavallo and Cook are able to do together.

Big Bertha Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

We can't wait for David Cook's album to come out. He is FANTASTIC. Also agree that Clive Davis is lousy and a real has been. Good on David for doing his thing. WE LOVE YOU DAVID!! YOU ARE A REAL STAR!! A STAR WITH A BRAIN!!

Michelle Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

Rob Cavallo producing? awesome! Clive not involved? awesomer!! (yeah, i'm pretty sure that's not a word.)

WildKAT Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Awesome! Hurry up November, we want that record! Keep true to yourself David! I for one am blissfully happy that Clive Davis didn't have a hand in any of this season's winner's work.
Davis has produced such drek for these Idol winners that I am surprised he lasted for 6 seasons of crapola production work.

Jesse Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

So... David said in an interview that a new single is coming. I would really, really like to get a release date on that one. The sooner the better, obviously. Can't wait to get a taste of what the new DC sounds like. I love old DC (Axium, AH) so much, and I'm sure he'll only improve.

Liz Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

I was a fan of David Cook's during the show, but cringed when I realized he would be stuck with the traditionally-craptastic Idol winners single. But you know what? Cook sells that song like nobody's business, and now I actually smile and sing along when I hear it on the radio. It will always remind me of his fantastic win, and I think it's a great song for weddings, graduations, sports montages, the Olympics, etc. I'm pretty sure it won't be on the new album and I'm glad, but I am really impressed that Cook has turned a flash-in-the-pan coronation song into a bonafide hit record.

Robert Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

My wife made me watch American Idol with her because she fell in love with David Cook when he sang "Hello." Even I have to admit the guy has serious chops, and damn if I didn't find myself rooting for him every week. He really deserved to win, and I am one 30-something male rock fan who is actually looking forward to buying his first album. With Rob Cavallo at the helm and Cook's vocal and songwriting abilities, I think it has the potential to be an amazing CD.

garth Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

I will agree Time of My Life shouldn't be on his album. Start fresh. however I will say it's the best of the bunch as far as the coronation songs go. But that damn "magic rainbows" line...what were they thinking? KC's "A Moment Like This" is a veryveryclose second.

Sarah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I'm awaiting this album with much anticipation, as I love David Cook's voice and his innate musicality and artistry. His future is indeed bright. By talking about his upcoming album's cohesiveness I think he is very diplomatically setting the stage for "Magic Rainbows" to NOT be included, but to instead quietly fade into obscurity. Really hoping so, anyway. That said, I hope he includes some quieter ballads to highlight the versatility of his voice.

lena Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

brilliant musician! can't wait for his Album!
this album will make david cook the number 1 selling artist in the world few months from now.
WHY?
because david cook showing up in the music scene is a breath of fresh air that the whole industry has been lacking for over a decade.

garth Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

Love you, man! can't wait!

Perkle Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

Can't wait to hear what he does with his first CD. I think he will be the most successful AI winner yet!

Mary Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

I am also super excited about this news! I just heard Cook perform at the AI Concert, and he was amazing! Great voice, powerful, commmanding stage presence, great sense of humor -- he is the full package, and he deserves so much success to match his great talent! I can't wait to buy his album!

wh Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

Yes! Cavallo's incredible. This is great news.

Ayux-Sukma Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

wow... David Cook recording with Cavallo? I can't wait!!! it'll be a great album... I think.
and I'll buy his album...

anyway, I'm David Archuleta big fan but I like David Cook too!

Peace... ^_^

Bruno Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

Remember guys. And this is not knocking Archuleta, but it's not as easy to make a Rock album as it is to make a Pop album. I'm sure David Archuleta has a myriad of writers and producers at his disposal. So of course he can quickly come out with a Stargate produced song. Cook fans be patient. Daughtry came out way later and his CD sold like crazy. It will happen for Cook too (if his music is good).

TV_Pete Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

I'm pleasantly surprised that they will let him do a Rock album. Of course, I wonder how much that will last.

How much competition is there for Rock music right now for airplay? There only seem to be a handful of Rock bands on the radio right now, so this may be a great time for him to do well in a field with a little less competition.

I also bought several of the studio songs that he performed on American Idol and enjoy listening to them with the family. My favorites were Eleanor Rigby, I'm Alive (great message), Little Sparrow, and Music of the Night.

I agree that he needs to be careful of his voice (seen in his performance on AI of the Aerosmith song, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"). I wonder if he is still dating the former AI contestant/TV Guide host. I hope he is doing well and look forward to hearing his album.

Claudette Faye Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:38 AM EST

hmmmmm.....sounds interesting....i'm starting to save money for his debut album and concert here in the Philippines.....Thank you David Cook....You grant our wish....Hahahaha.....We're waiting for you here in Philippines, wait, someone is calling, my ring tone is "Always Be My Baby," it was recorded last April 16, 2008, 6:45pm here in the Philippines...That's Mariah Carey Week....hahaha

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

I am highly anticipating this album. It is a shame, though, that 19/AI seems determined to give him the Hicks treatment. He is so talented and seems so marketable, too. But they wanted the kid to win and they'll get the kid to win one way or another, I suppose. That would be why Archuleta has an album single released to pop radio while Cook is saddled with Magic Rainbows with no word on an album single. Damn, AI, obvious much?

CRAWDADDY Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

Really? I read w/interest until you threw DD in there... DC appears to be trying to establish rocker cred. all the guyliner, bling and shades of DURAN DURAN in his music will leave many scratching their heads...

I'm a big fan of David Cook and the way He sings he sounds like a combination of Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, or Duran Duran of a new generation. I got all his songs from American idol performances and never get tired of listening to it. I wish I could get a copy of his Analog heart album that he wrote. I'm so excited for his upcoming new CD especially that He collaborated with a group of famous musician that he admires. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be smashing hit again the way people surprisingly and smashingly voted him to be the American Idol. Everything is gonna come up roses for Cookie and He deserves all these blessings because of his good hard work and his attitude towards life. Congratulations my idol.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

Hay!! When's his first album comming out?

Aileen Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

David Cook is the best Idol AI ever produced. I can't wait for the Record. He is a truly gifted musician who brought music and happiness back into my life. Working with Rob Cavallo is very exciting and hopefully they are a perfect match and will create a rock masterpiece.

Katy Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Love David Cook and his huge talent, but not his song, The Time of My Life, and wish he'd shave his face and comb his hair back away from his face.

katie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

So happy for Cookie that he's working with people he admires. I've been going back through his Axium albums and Analog Heart the past few days and all I have to say is - David Cook is one phenomenal song writer. When you put that talent with his smokin' VOICE - wow... can't wait! And I'd like to 2nd everything Marie said about Nigel "The Manipulator" Lithgoe. I've always thought AI succeeded in spite of Nigel, and because of those few super talented gems like David Cook that came into our living rooms through Idol. Less of the judges + younger mentors = Idol at #1 for another 7 years.

Mary Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

I have watched AI since season 1. In seven seasons, never have I been so anticipating the winner's album as I am right now. Mr. Cook is a remarkably gifted singer, musician and songwriter. Rob Cavallo is the perfect fit. November can't come soon enough for me. I will be waiting with baited breath. Best of luck to David Cook. He deserves nothing but the best.

Since Clive "Crypt Keeper" Davis does not have his cold claws on David Cook, I predict Cookie's album will be a hit. That is really cool about songwriting with Ed Roland!!

First of all, I'm happy for David Cook and know he will put out a respectable and solid album. Secondly, since there is no space to leave comment about the "Nigel leaving Idol" article, I will leave my comment here....yippee! Season 7 was a disgrace with all the plants and habitual lying. I felt vindicated to see David Cook (non-plant) win. Nigel, I hope the door kicked you in the ass on the way out.

I haven't been so exited about American Idol like I am this year. David Cook ROCKS.... I am so exited about the wonderful producer he is working with. This is going to be The Best I can't wait to hear all of what he sings.

Can not be more excited about Cavallo working on the album!

Wish they had more time though..

Fantastic news. Maybe the most talented winner they've ever had and a wonderful producer!

I've never been one to follow American Idol, but from what I've seen David Cook has a really strong rock voice and seems to be much more talented a musician than most of the people on that show. I have high-hopes that Rob Cavallo will help him craft an interesting major-label debut. I suspect I will be buying this come November.

Cook + Cavallo is a match made in heaven. Color me amazed that 19E appears to be making the right moves with their enormously promising winner. I think this record could really be both artistically credible AND commercially viable. This is definitely becoming one of the more highly-anticipated albums releases of the Fall.

Thank you so much for the new tidbits of information! I can hardly wait to hear new music from David Cook. I'm practically addicted to his previous solo indie album Analog Heart, its amazing to think he got that made on his own. Also, knowing that only makes me more impatient to hear what he can do with actual backing.

Rob Cavallo sounds like the perfect man for the job, and I'm very very happy to hear he's onboard. Any chance to hear anything about the album from him? I'm very curious to know how he got into the process with DC.

Also - I don't expect TOML to be on the album, and that's a very good thing. One thing David has said over and over is that he wants to make a cohesive record. Can't see anything David does mashing with "magic rainbow". LOL
