Dave Matthews Band's saxophone player dies

Aug 20, 2008, 09:18 AM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: Music Biz

Leroimoore_lLeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died on Tuesday from complications stemming from an ATV accident he suffered in June. He was 46. Moore crashed his ATV on June 30 on his farm near Charlottesville, VA. He had been discharged from the hospital and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin a physical rehabilitation program, but complications from the accident sent him back to the hospital on July 17. The band issued a statement on its official website, describing Moore's death as "unexpected." Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin had been sitting in for the band's summer tour.

The AP reports that Dave Matthews Band went ahead with their show on Tuesday at L.A.'s Staples Center, where Matthews dedicated the concert to Moore.

The Dave Matthews Band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, according to their website, when vocalist-guitarist Matthews tapped Moore and drummer Carter Beauford -- both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music scene -- to help record to tape some songs Matthews had written. Since then, according to the RIAA, Dave Matthews Band has sold over 31 million units in the U.S., putting them in the Top 100 highest-selling music acts of all time.

This makes me very sad. He was so talented and fun to watch. He made the shows!

Michelle Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

I was lucky enough to experience his sound many times, but no concert was more memorable than at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. To hear him jam at a venue like that was truly amazing. LeRoi was extremely talented and will be greatly missed.

Harvey Cornstein Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

I guess someone saw fit to remove my story of meeting Leroi in Oklahoma when the DMB tour bus broke down. :( My memories are not as worthy as those of others? Censorship sux.

Rabbit Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Sad to say that I've never been to a DMB show. Simply enjoyed the music immensely. Ashamed to say that I can only now put a face with the haunting saxophone solos. RIP, Mr. LeRoi. You and your music will be duly missed.

Stephanie Doyer (CT) Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Also would like to add that when we are at shows to come, we all need to pull together and unite in Leroi's memory. It's going to be hard going to next show when they feel ready to perform after this tragic loss. I feel so bad.

Stephanie Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

What a shocker! I have been a DMB fan since 1995 and this breaks my heart. DMB has got me thru alot of issues in my life and now I feel they won't be the same without Leroi. My heart goes out to the rest of the band and my fellow fans. May you rest in peace Leroi! You will be sadly missed.

Jeff Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

If he was half as cool in real life as he was on stage, he was one helluva good soul. LeRoi brought many a smile to my face at many a concert. His memory will live on through all the great music he loved to play for all of us that we'll each remember for the rest of our lives.

Terry Nichols Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

I felt a great sense of sadness this morning when I heard the news, such a tremendously talented musician, his music brought so many smiles to so many faces over the years. There is a sad irony in that life was short but sweet for certain, for Leroi. When I think back to the many shows I have seen, his big smile and the sense that he was sitting on top of the world, letting his legs hang free and having one heck of a good time is how I will remember him. His solos were so amazing all you could do was smile, because words couldn't even begin to describe their beauty.

The Gorge shows will be bittersweet this year.

Warm wishes to his friends and family in their time of grieving.

Bobby Rooney Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

May he rest in peace in heaven

sad dmb fan Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

How many of us can say we will be remembered in such a way? What an amazing thing to have touched so many lives in such a positive way. Although my heart feels heavy and sad right now, I know there must be a special place for you, LeRoi. I can't imagine my life without the music of the Dave Matthews Band. A million thanks are not enough . . . until we meet again . . .

gofish Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Though I haven't listed to DMB much in the last few years I am deeply saddened by the loss of Moore. For the people who want to post bitter words about people who love this band.Shame on you. Find another outlet for your frustrations.
Thanks Leroi for the many great nights I enjoyed with all your fans.
Peace

I <3 DMB Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

My dad called me today at work and told me about LeRoi, hearing this news broke my heart. I have had a very dear memory of mine at a DMB show...a DMB concert was the last time I seen my best friend alive...So hearing this news today truely hit home for me. I am deeply saddened by the loss of LeRoi. My thoughts go out to his family, friends, DMB, and fans.

Ginny Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

My sis just called me and let me know about LeRoi. We have been traveling together for years seeing the band-girls weekend will not be the same without our full DMB experience! The great musician honor roll in heaven just added one Moore name...jam on LeRoi!

Brian Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

I can only say that I have seen DMB 7 times starting in 1994 with some big breaks in between. I have worked for bands for years and years, and I have never seen a group of guys who come out on stage and love what they do so much and give such a vibe that its like every show is/was a first. They were, by far, the best touring band and I will miss LeRoi. God Bless him and his family and bandmates. When he steps into the light, I am sure his arms will be open wide.

Cheryl D Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

I am so thankful that I got to see one of your last concert's at Darien Lake this summer. You are so AMAZING! I will miss you. GOD Bless YOU and your Family & Friend's!

Sara Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I can't believe it. My friends and I just saw a concert earlier this summer, on of the best on Montage. He will be missed.

Chuck Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

Met LeRoi in 7th grade. Was a great sax player at Western Albemarle High and one fun guy to be around. He will be missed.

Sarah Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

Thank for for LeRoi Moore without him we may not of ever known the DMB. I have been a fan for 14yrs, they have gotten me thru hard times, good times, drunk times and life times. RIP LeRoi I will miss you and your music it was hard to see the band without you this year in Denver. You will live thru the music the rest of the guys play and you will always be thought of and loved. Thanks for giving me so many great years of music and at all the concerts you could always tell you left your heart out there for all of us to enjoy.

Long Before These Crowded Streets Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

I am absolutely crushed (pun sooo not intended). Forever loved and forever missed. RIP Roi.

Lois Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

DKSP_ SHITE? SHITE??? For the sake of your soul- don't go through this short life being such a jackass- DMB is a MAJOR contributor to the music world. What on earth DO you listen to? Never mind- Don't answer that - the world doesn't really care.

jen brown Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

wow, that is really a sad situation. I love DMB and have never gone to a show, But sat 08-23 will be my first in phoenix. to bad LeRoi couldnt be a part of it.. Thats even if they still continue on with the show pending any funeral arrangements..great musician.. what a horrible.. my prayers go out to the family of LeRoi and DMB...

Rian Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

R.I.P. Leroi! May the Lord bless you and keep you. This summer's tour wasn't the same without you! You will be truely missed by all. To those that are being negative DMB, SHAME on you. Obviously your parents did a poor job raising you. Rule #1 Do not ever disrespect the dead! Rule #2 If you don't have anything nice to say keep your f*@^ing mouth shut.

Lois Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

I was so shocked to hear of Leroi's death, he was a brilliant muscian and he will be missed ever so much. When some one this young dies so suddenly, it really does remind us how short and fleeting life can be- think of this the next time you feel like telling someone off or saying something cruel about someone in anger- they just might not be around when you want to apologise. Hold your family and friends close- you could lose one in the next second.
You will be missed Leroi.

jeanie Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

The last time i heard him play was this date last year...Cuyahoga Falls OH. It's unbelievable to think this time last year. RIP LeRoi you were the best and will be terribly missed!

melissa Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

I've cried all day. Just remember life is short but sweet for certain! GOD BLESS YOU LeRoi XOXO

Jeff Walsh Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I have been a diehard fan since 1994, I have been to more concerts that I care to count. Although this is a huge loss for the band. More Importantly my thoughts and prays go out to his family and the people he has touched through his music and actions. We have truly loss a great human being and he will be missed for generations to come.

mandy Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

wow what a sad sad day for the dmb community and dmb family! it is unimaginable that 6-28-08 was my last time with LeRoi. lil did i know that was gonna be it until i see you again my friend.. RIP ROI WE LOVE YOU

RUCRAZY Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

I can't believe anyone would say DMB is over rated. Why have you seen them a bunch of times if they are over rated. As far as 10 songs, what concert have you been too. Every concert I've been too they have played well beyond their time limit and in fact have had to pay fines for playing to long. I'm devastated about LeRoi leaving us so early. He was a very talented member of a great band.

Abbey Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

i mam only 12 years old an i have still seen 5 shows. my first show was when i was 3 years old i love the Dave Matthews band! thet have a special place in my heart. i love all of the members so much. when i found out this news i cryed :( i love you all soo much and i am thinking of you. why must this happen to a great person :((

I always looked forward to hearing his sax solos. He was truly a gifted musician.

Alli Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I deeply saddened by the loss of this great musician. Every note of his solos and arrangements that he created with the band were wonderful and always a joy to hear live in concert. I have seen dmb over a dozen times and will miss LeRoi's great music and the grace that he brought to the band. I am a musician myself and share the same birthday as LeRoi. I have been playing DMB all day in tribute.

Right... Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Its comments like:

"i am broken now that dave matthews band is broken there is a possibility that this will change thier concerts forever..............i might have to take my own life and wait for the remaining members of dave to join us and put on a reunion tour in heaven"

...that validate comments from posters like "Life's_fun"

Seriously, I know you are a fan but take your own life? There is nothing in this world that could make me take my own life, especially something as relatively insignificant as a member from a band I like dying.

Seriously...its time to get out of your room and live your life if you are actually considering taking your life over something like this.

mama west Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

RIP leroi moore.......we were all blessed with what you brought to this earth..Dave matthews band will not be the same without you.. you were a huge influence for the whole band and we have suffered a great loss. Much love to the band for enduring this monumental incident. Much love and music.

Erin Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

This hit me randomly hard. I was a huge fan of DMB in my younger days and though I've moved mostly past that in terms of my musical taste, I've always held a place in my heart for them. And there are about half a dozen songs that I will defend to my last breathe as amazing pieces of art. I faded out of buying their albums or going to shows mostly because of the drunken frat boy element of the crowd. It cheapened the whole universe for me. But as musicians, these men are impeccable. And LeRoi always had such a quiet but steady spirit. True intensity. My thoughts go out to his family and the rest of the band. I've been playing Under the Table all day at work in memory. Sometimes it's just good to revisit the building blocks of my own musical passion. RIP LeRoi

When I heard about this I was shocked. I knew the injury was bad, but I didn't think that this would happen. I was also fortunate enough to catch his last show this summer before his accident... It was amazing and I won't forget what a presence he had in that band. RIP LeRoi

iris Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

"Eat, drink, and be mary...
...For tomorrow it dies."

We never know what life is ahead of us. I have seen them 3 times and it's always been an amazing show. The last time I saw them was at Nissan Pavillion in Virgina 3 days before he was in the ATV accident. My brother just called and told me the news. It is so sad, but anyone who knows anything about DMB knows that every last one of the band members play their hearts out. He was exceptional as he not only played the sax, but was a master at Clarinet, Flute, Piccalo, etc. etc. What a great inspiration for any musician who is learning to play, or continues to advance. It is sad but he has seen, lived, and felt, what most of us only imagine in a lifetime. His life was not so much a loss, but more of a reason for anyone to do what they have always wanted to do and embrace it. Life is not forever... Enjoy it to the fullest. R.I.P.

bentley Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Amazing. I found out watching Anderson Cooper. It's crazy how you never know. I didn't realize that he was hurt that bad. First Bernie Mac, Issac Hayes and now le Roi. SAD!!! I remember his sax riffs. I'm a huge Matthews fan.

Bree Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

This comes as a huge shock as does any other tragic death. Leroi was such an amazing musician! I'll NEVER forget their show in 2005 at the Tweeter Center in Jersey when Boyd and Leroi had a 20 minute jam session in the middle of Two Step. Even though he's been taken from the world of music, as well as fans, friends, and family, his music and contribution to my all time favorite band will live forever in my heart! RIP Mr. Moore!

No doubt, LeRoi will be greatly missed.

Josie Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

This news broke my heart. I've been a fan for a long time. I don't know how DMB was able to go out and play a concert last night. How sad! RIP LeRoi. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Parke Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

I've seen this happen before when Jerry Garcia died...the parasites, losers and haters jump on the blogs to mock the fans and dishonor the memory of the deceased. Can you imagine having such an absence of light in your life and so little to do that you'd engage in such subhuman behavior? But enough about them, they're easily forgotten... I wasn't a huge DMB fan but I respected what they did a lot and was very saddened to hear about LeRoi's death.

Angela Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

C-ville native here that was lucky enough to catch these guys from the VERY beginning. I've never been so affected by a death of a celebrity, but this makes me cry. He LOVED music and if you liked their music or not, doesn't matter, he LOVED it... he played because he loved music... that is what true musicians do. It's sad we have lost one amazing and true musician as talented as he was. Keep on blowin' man... your music will live with me forever.

basso sinha Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

sincere condolences to the band memebers and his family. he will be greatly missed by us fans..peace..

This is just so awful. DMB won't ever be the same. Leroi was an amazingly talented musician and an integral part of one of our generation's most prolific bands. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with Leroi's family, as well as DMB and their loved ones.

This isn't the place for that kind of talk brother. A lot of people miss LeRoi very much right now. I'm just sorry you don't have the cognative capacity to appreciate the intricate nature of a DMB jam. Good luck at life there shmoe.

i'm sick and tired of these people if you are not a dmb fan why do you post on here? don't bash other people's taste of music, show some respect and stop acting like a 6 year old child. leroi was a top notch saxophonist and loved to play music. dmb love what they do, their fans love what they do, and they are a phenomenal band that puts together great music. leroi will be missed but hopefully the band will continue to work hard in the studio and tour across the world. dmb haters stop posting on this blog, show some respect, and listen to whatever music you choose and i'll respect that

Leroi Moore was a talented saxophonist. He truly shone in the DMB. I'm no Davehead, but I think he had the potential to move on and make wonderful music. It's a tragic loss.

ME Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Life's Fun,
What a sad pathetic life you must have. Do you have nothing better to do than locking oneself in one's room to read blogs, spending hours blogging to others to simply get a rise and gain attention that you crave on and on; yeah, now that's a life.

Who's obsessing now. You are a complete contradiction and it is clear that you are starving for attention. Pathetic and shallow indeed.

saxbiz Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

a wonderful musician!! I always enjoyed his work on baritone as well te other horns.

Life's_Fun Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Shallow?! Going and seeing concerts; buying CD's; locking oneself in one's room to listen to the CD's; studying lyrics and finding spots where the band is "really, really talking to me!"; spending hours talking to other fanatics about the band; and on and on; yeah, now that's a life.

You obsess over a bunch of losers semi-playing instruments and singing half-a$$ed lyrics, and we enjoy posting satirical comments in response to news stories. Neither is more or less noble, but a key difference is that we take a brief break from our lives to do this. From the sound of some of the posts on here, following DMB *IS* your life. Shallow indeed.

cndn610 Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain... I've seen DMB 14 times and I'm 59 years old. Love the band and am so happy I have so many cds of my concerts to listen to Roi. I find it amazing that people on the EW boards will rip anyone at anytime. Amazingly shallow. Why would someone go to see a band over and over if they hate them? Certainly am glad these folks aren't my friends. I'll even take the drunken frat boys over boorish jerks who post on the boards anytime! Never had a bad time at a DMB concert, just always go to the john during Where are you going! I can listen to Two Step at every concert, I go to hear what I love!

J Gerharts Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

wow...i caught their show in Alpine Valley and it was definitely the best concert i've ever been to. i just can't believe he's gone now... You will always be missed man!

Ann Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Couldn't you "Dave-haters" find some other place to email your crummy comments with your lack of proper spelling and grammar?

It is a sad day without LeRoi - we are attending the Phoenix show this Saturday and it definitely will not be the same without him.

RIP LeRoi...you will be sorely missed...

Peanut Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I am totally shocked and saddened by Roi's sudden passing. I have been listening to DMB and going to their shows forever. The Band will not be the same without him. "I wanted to stay, I wanted to play, I wanted to love you". God Bless you Leroi. Jam in heaven forever.

Ive only seen Dave twice. and im 14... they are defiantly my favorite band! Dave Matthews band is amazing! i can probably speak for a lot of people when i say that we are all mourning with the rest of the band. Leroi was an amazing saxophonist and he still is. he will never be forgotten. i love you Dave, carter,Boyd,Stephan and of course Leroi.

RIP Leroi<3
you will always be remembered.

"If I die, before I'm old,oh brother of mine please don't forget me if I go. If I die, before my time, oh sweet sister of mine please don't regret me if I die." - We will never forget and never regret having heard you play-rest in peace.

Mike Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Prayers are with Leroi's family, the band, and the DMB community today. Leroi was such a master talent, and seemed like a very humble man. When he played the intro to One Sweet World at Bristow, Va. in 1996, it sounded like musical honey coming out of that sax. Heaven's music just got a little sweeter . . .

Eric Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I was in total shock when I heard the news. No words can really describe what has happened. All I know to say is the world is a little less talented today. Leroi is the most talented musician I ever heard play. The band just won't be the same without Leroi. We will all miss you. Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain... RIP Leroi

i've seen DMB a bunch of times and they are by far and away the most over rated band alive. nothing like paying top dollar for a band that plays 10 songs and you can hardly understand a word dave says. i was sorry to hear about leroi though, he was very talented and he will be missed by the legion of pathetic dave heads

I have been to 21 Dave Matthews Band concerts and I cannot believe that ROI is gone. His solos and tightness with the band will be forever missed. I am a huge fan of the band and each individual who makes up this amazing music group. They are like no other and it is so tragic to know one is now gone forever. LeRoi was influential, mesmorizing, inspirational and was nothing short of phenomanol at his art. He will be deeply missed. I was saddend to hear the news and I am still in a state of shock. After seeing the band perform so many times and looking information up you feel like you know them. RIP LEROI MOORE

LeRoi's haunting solo's on Listener Supported's #41 took us to that magical place where music transcends everything else. Rest well our brother. The world is a little less today without you.

Very sad situation. He was a founding member of the band and always a calming precense on the band it seemed. I was fortunate enough to be at the last show he played before the accident. Many people are not aware but he still suffered from stage freight up until his last show which is why he wore shades and hid in the shadows when he was not playing.

RIP Leroi- "Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain."

LeRoi will be greatly missed at the Gorge this year... thoughts and prayers to his family, and the entire DMB community....

Dave Matthews Band has lost a great man, and a great sax player. I know it won't be the same without him.

I only saw one concert but it was the best concert I have ever been to. LeRoi was great live.

Play on, LeRoi. Rest In Peace.

I was saddened to hear that he had passed. I have been trying to get an update on his condition for some time, and I was completely shocked this morning to hear he had died. I've had some of his solos echoing in my head all morning. My prayers are with his family, friends, fans, and bandmates.

Leroi has touched many days in my life. He is a man who has put a smile on my face time and time again. Thank you for providing outstanding music for our time. Your music and spirt will live in history.

Sad Sad news. I know heaven just got that much better by taking Leroi from us. He will teach them how to jam. I have seen them play 53 times. Most recently 2 shows with Jeff (Leroi's fill in) and it was great but different. I'm so glad I also got to see one of his last performances. He always brought something special to his spot in the band, just like the rest of them. That is what makes DMB so awesome! He will definitely be missed. R.I.P. Leroi JAM 2 DMB 4 EVER! dmbjamz aka dmb3420

I am truly sad today. In tribute, LeRoi's Sax blasted in my car on the way to take my kids to school. Crash was our wedding song and I rocked my little ones to sleep to DMB and LeRoi's sax... Now over a decade later they are our family's band. My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole band and LeRoi's family and friends.

I remember when I was installing the wireless network on the tour bus, Leroi had so many cherished laughs together. I'll never forget the time when for about 2 hours we couldn't find out why the wireless mouse wouldn't work, come to find out Leroi forgot to put the batteries in. HAHA, man, Logitech makes great stuff.

We'll miss you LeRoi! This summer's shows weren't the same without you...you'll never be replaced in our hearts!

LeRoi will definitely be missed. I haven't seen DMB live in over 5 years (at 33, I'm getting too old to handle the drunk-frat-boy crowd), and can't quite imagine seeing them live without him. My thoughts are with his family, friends and bandmates.
