'Hairspray' director 'sitting back and waiting' for sequel

Categories: Movie Biz

What does Hairspray director Adam Shankman know about the recently-touted possible sequel? “I know as much as you,” he tells EW.com, and then begins riffing: “I’m just like, what’s it gonna be? Corny takes the kids on a USO tour
in Nam? Tracy goes to Nam and Edna joins the Black Panthers? Wilbur
f—s a grieving Jackie O?” But seriously, folks … “Because it’s John Waters it could be very original and very fun.”

Hairspray took in nearly $120 million in the U.S. when it came out last summer. Waters is currently writing a treatment for the sequel. Shankman, who’s in post-production on the holiday family film, Bedtime Stories, starring Adam Sandler, won’t decide if he’s going to direct it until he’s read Waters’ treatment. “I talked to John and he’s done all this research about when [high school] dance programs folded and stuff,” Shankman says. “He’s just furiously working. I’m more of the sitting-back-and-waiting guy.”

    How about this: don’t make it. Nobody needs a “Hairspray 2″, it will only tarnish the excellent reputation of the first one (see: the “Shrek” sequels, the “Pirates” sequels, “Spider-Man 3″, the list goes on…).

    I agree. I must say I’m suprised Waters is doing that. He should get back behind the camera on something completely original. :)

    Original = Good
    Remake = Not worth price of ticket
    Sequel = *gag reflex*
    Please spare the viewing public from having to see John Travolta doing that part again.

    WHY!
