Michael Bay talks 'Transformers 2' and 'Friday the 13th' remake

Jul 15, 2008, 03:43 PM | by Lindsay Soll

Categories: Movie Biz

Michaelbay_l During a break on the set of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — described to us as a "remote air force base" at an "undisclosed location" — horror franchise reviver and blockbuster director extraordinaire Michael Bay hopped on the phone to give us the scoop on the Transformers sequel, his other projects in the works, and his reaction to that Dark Knight script circling the Internet with his name on it...

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tell us about Transformers 2? Or, better yet, what will you tell us?
MICHAEL BAY: When we were writing the script, I said to the writers, "I hate sequels that try to make it to the third movie. Pretend like we’re never having a third movie, so let’s go for broke on the second one. I hate those cliffhangers! Let’s just make this movie stand on its own." I really feel this movie is not a forced sequel. I think the script is really good, and I think it’s got a lot of new stuff in it. There are a lot of rumors out there, but we’ve released a lot of fake stuff. We’ve done a really good job of keeping things secret.

Can you give us a hint of something that is true then?
[Laughs] No.

C'mon, anything?
There are some great, new robots that are really inventive.

You recently wrapped production on your update of Friday the 13th, and horror buffs out there are dying to know: what's it going to be about?
It’s a reconception of the original. We’re introducing a whole group of new kids. What we always try to do is add a little bit of freshness to these movies that were really scary back then and update them for a new audience.

AFTER THE JUMP: Bay continues on Friday the 13th ("You’re just not going to believe the first 12 minutes!") and talks Ouija boards.

So are you following the same plot as the very first Friday the 13th?
It’s a little different. I don’t want to give it away because of the Internet crazies.

There's been rumors that you're going to include plots from all three Friday the 13ths into your remake. Is that true?
The first two, yeah.

Where did you film the Crystal Lake scenes?
In Austin, where we also shot Texas Chainsaw. Austin gives you a lot of looks.

Is there anything else you are willing to divulge about it?
I haven’t seen the director's cut because he’s still cutting, but I know this one will really be scary; it’s also funny, as well. It’s a fun college adventure that goes awry. It’s not a movie I would ever show my mom! (Laughs) We don’t make these for our mothers; we make these for the fans out there.

Speaking of those fans, what do you say to people who are worried that an update of Friday the 13th will ruin the original?
There are always haters out there, and you can’t get rid of that. We try to be faithful, and we’re fans ourselves. It’s like when I did Transformers — I listened to the fans, you know, but you still have to make your own movie by respecting what was done and trying to give it a whole new twist.

How have you given it a new twist?
You’re just not going to believe the first 12 minutes! It’s a twist in itself.

And you’re actually working on a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, too, right?
Don’t know yet. We haven’t made our deal, but it’s worth every penny.

What are you working on next? Ouija?
It’s something we’re playing with, yes. I’m just producing it.  As far as being a director, I’m not sure what I’m doing next.

What will Ouija even be about?
We’re just meeting with writers now. There’s a plot that I actually wrote the outline for; we’re just trying to get the script right.

Finally, I just have to ask, did you happen to see the "Michael Bay's Rejected The Dark Knight Script" floating around online?
[Laughs] That’s complete bulls---! I might’ve read one line of that.

Did you find it funny at all?
It’s just, where do people find all of this time?

These quotes sound really encouraging.
I dont know alot about Transformers history but I know Michael Bay has done his research, hopefully he'll be as original and faithful in Friday The 13th.

I just puiblished the Friday 13th Trailer on my webiste, if you wanna take a peek:

personally speaking, i think michael bay is the best director in the field of film making!

matt Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

Hey prodegy, if you were an catual fan of theese vintage horror flix you would never say such a fucktarded thing. you are corect however in your assertion that no other countrys have managed to create a decent horror film.

matt Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

Michle Bay may be the worst director of all time and should be punnished for his crimes aggainst cinima. when will he stop rapeing the beloved charactors of my youth? enough remakes!

the prodigy Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

sitting here reading all these post really makes me laugh... to jane when is the last time japan.or china.or any other country made a top notch horrer flick.. dnt bash the usa. ur dumb and u know nothing about movies.. second the remake of halloween was great. so people need to lay off. and third bay is making movies that ether have not been on tv or in theaters for years... and as far as I can see making a remake of freddy or jason is a great idea.. because anything is better than some random dumb ass getting cute and making another jason 7

Everybody Seems to Hate Jane Lol Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

My Name says it all. Lol

Bay is a Very Good Director. That I must say because Transformers to me was well done.

Daniel Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

I like the first transformers but will the sequel be kick ass like you say.

Bay fan Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

Another thing if Jane does live in the US its people like you who make our country weak!!!! You will submit to anything and anyone!!

Bay fan Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 01:19 AM EST

I agree totally his movies rock! And Jane if your in the USA you can kiss my a**!!! I'm sick of citizens in this country bashing it. If you don't like the country then get on a plane and live in Baghdad!!!!!!!!!!!! Then maybe you'll get a realty check from sitting on your pampered a**!!

ianpogi Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

i dont care if bay's flms are not worth oscars, i just like them a lot coz they're entertaining. and that what bay is doing in ENTERTAINMENT business... entertains... oscar's bullshit!

tyson Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Is it just me or do BAY looks like Lionel Luther on Smallville?

gia Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:32 AM EST

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE THIS IS FOR THE HATERS OUT THERE YOU ALL SAY HIS MOVIES DONT HAVE A GOOD PLOT TO THEM AND THEY ARE NOT WORTH OSCARS, I WANT YOU PEOPLE TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND ASK YOURSELF WHY AM I SOOOO PRESSED TO SEE TRANSFORMERS 2, BECAUSE YOU KNOW DARN WELL YOU ARE GOING TO SEE IT WHEN IT COMES OUT

gia Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

Jane how is he stealing peoples money when they are giving it to him, since you are so smart can you explain this to me Ms American hater????

Gia Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST

This message is to JANE ,you say he is stealing peoples money huh, then why are people like you still going to see his movies then if they are so bad. He must be doing something right because he is getting paid big time to do these movies, and you are just a nobody. If you dont like AMERICANS then why in the world are you looking at are movies then?? And to think about it just because you dont like the mans movies what differance do it make if he is a AMERICAN , you are just a AMERICAN bashing nobody, with bad taste. You are one of those people with bad taste, when it is something good that everybody like you hate it, but if it is something bad you love it you are A HOLE backwards . You cant be to smart if you know the man makes bad movies, then why do you keep sticking your hands in the fire, when you know they are going to get burned!!!!!!

Chantelle Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Michael Bay is the greatest director ever! I love all of his movies but I must say that his movie Transformers was my favorite. Michael Bay is my hero and I can't wait to watch the second Transformers. That's the only movie that I want to see right now. I want to watch him make the movie too cause I can lean alot from what he does when he directs. Someday I wish to be like him. But for now I just want to wish him good luck on making Transformers 2.

Bill Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Jane whats with the snarky little remark about America? Do you live here? I really don't understand all this America bashing. If our movies suck so bad, why do they always break box office records overseas? And I'm getting a little tired of all the Bay bashing. Don't like it, don't watch it. I don't like you snotty little foreigners and your snotty little movies.

Spyder Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Some of you seem to forget that even in all it's awsomeness Transformers wasn't a "brilliant" or "Oscar" worthy show. It was a 30 minute commercial that became something more. But it was about action and selling toys......the movie was about......action and selling toys (and tickets of course). Understanding that Bay's film hit the mark on the ....ing bullseye.

Chris Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Wow you people are jealous... I love it. I love Michael Bay. His movies rock.

PS: Jane...it's ok to be jealous of us Americans. Most people are. So STFU!

ohzion Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

well i think there should be a freddy vs jason 2, but on to the real action transformers 2 you know mr.bay hot shot should be in the movie with bumble bee as a long time friend.

Kevin Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

Jesus You can tell you're a closed minded B@#*H.... Open your eyes and stoping being so f'ing judgemental... Anyone can take a great name and product but not everyone can make it work... look at the Eric Bana version of The Hulk... get over yourself.

Shawn Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Jane, were you fired by Bay? Maybe he stiffed you of the tip you felt you deserved when you served him a latte. WAIT! I know what it is....you offered him a little "taste" to get a job on the set and instead, he sent you packing! You need to relax and chill on the dissing of Americans. You're clearly an idiot

jane Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Sean, you must have a brain in that thick skull of yours, surely you don't consider Bay films to be entertaining, if so than your idea of entertaiment is at odds with the rest of the planet's. BTW Transformers made money not becuase it was a Bay film, rather it is brand, a brand that has been given to somebody like Bay who in effect has raped the childhoods of millions of people. Don't you eveer call his films entertaining, unless of course you are American in which case you are forgiven, becuase small things please small minds and a Bay film is in no way BIG

JD5DAD Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

As one of the few people how liked Pearl Harbor yes there should not have been the love story but then again I don't think there should be a love interest in any action movie spiderman alone would have been better without Mary Jane ok back to Bay I knew that Transformers would be a great movie just because Bay was doing it and Revenge will be just as great and I can't wait to see 13th

Sean Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I LOVE when people say they can make better movies than Bay...OK, go ahead. Spare me all of the BS about how you can't get the money together and blah blah blah...Bay makes great entertainments. Nothing more, nothing less. I love me some Robert Altman, Park Chan Wook, Henke...My favourite films of all time are The Player, Jackie Brown, Casablance but I also love Suspiria, The Ring, Transformers and so on...Not every film shown needs to be high art...Entertaining is enough and I bet Jane, that couldn't make anything worth seeing.

Jeremy Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Just because a movie is labelled action, doesn't excuse it from being stupid. Bay movies would be much less criticized is he would just lighten up on the stupid...even just a little...btw I just saw the Dark KNight, plenty of acton amongst other more important things like story and character development with none of the stupid...brilliant movie

jane Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Mr. Bay is a human being, he has not yet discovered what he has talent for, everybody is talented but to discover one's talent is true enrichment. Mr. Bay may believe he can make good movies, whether it is action or otherwise, but I guarentee you, give anyone a camera and one year with $200 million and anyone could do a better job on all Bay films. Mr. Bay you need to discover your actual talent, becuase it sure as hell isn't film making, what you put on screen is no better than what I produce in the toilet bowl. Stop stealing peoples' money

oc Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

To Jon

so you actually think you can do better? stop talking s*** :)

aspeth Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

he's obviously pissed off at the dark knight script, heehee.

it was freaking hilarious "like, the biggest f**ing missiles you'll ever see" it was a good spoof, not an insulting one.

t3hdow Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

To jayloveless:
What's wrong with liking big, loud and (hopefully) entertaining action films over Oscar bait? To be honest, the whole debate that labels uninterested moviegoers towards 'Oscar-worthy' films are idiots plain annoys me. It just makes the action fanboys stereotype Oscar billed films as pretentious, and the serious film buffs typecast all action movies as mindless garbage. Can't directors make films with endearing characters and wonderful plots that entertain as much as it's smart and/or informative without worrying about the 'Oscar worthiness' stigma?
With that said, even I have to admit that story focus is secondary for Michael Bay's movie making. I learned that lesson three times fold with Bad Boys 2, The Island and Transformers. The action's always wonderful to watch (especially Transformers) but the trite storylines are instantly forgettable. I agree with Ed that Bay would be a much better director if he balanced the immersive action with an equally memorable story.

nathan Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

I wasn't crazy for the first Transformers, but I'll still go see part 2, I have a feeling it will be better.

i agree with him about making a sequel that doesnt lead up to the third a la pirates of the carribean or matrx. i think thats all i agree with him about...

Michael Bay is bad, but not as bad as Brett Ratner.

M SINC Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

This is just my opinion, but when i have friends over and i want to show them my 10 foot movie screen, hi-def projector and in 7.1 digital surround sound. I will put on a movie like Transformers or Bad Boys 2...Not some, award winning, movie such as Juno...The special effects and action scenes are what it all about for me. (But this is just my opinion, so don't hate it)...PEACE!

Marty Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

I can't believe that he didn't see the script as a joke. See this is why Michael Bay doesn't make movies with good humor. I've never liked a Mbay film thus far.

david henderson Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

why do people always say he is ruining the old..i have a whole sleeve of horror movie ton i bet you have never heard of.it good and fun to go watch these films in theaters.the texas chainsaw beginning was really good and gory every one is just so cleshe about everything. You guys are just mad you never got off you ass to do anything with your life so you dog everyone else about remakes.

Jenny Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

Argh...he is ruining the original movies. Why can't he just come up with something original?

Stef Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:33 AM EST

To Ramo.. Your telling him to laugh about the "script". He laughed! It says when they asked him! Lol.

Sheesh.

Shakespeare Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

When will everyone realize that MBay is just a whore and a product of an industry that just keeps getting worse. The hollywood strike is over! When will writers and directors stop making remakes!

Bay had made the best movie for 2007,
please do it again for 2009!

Ceballos Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Ramo-

I think Bay has shown a willingness to laugh at himself (see the Verizon Fios "Awesome" commercial). Sure, he could've displayed a bit more humor about "The Dark Knight" thing, but you can't expect the guy to be able to laugh EVERYTHING off. I know he (and Ratner) are the go-to punch bags as far as action directors, but some of that stuff HAS to insult them at least some of the time.

ann Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

Does he seriously not get that 'Michael Bay's Dark Knight script' was a joke?

Ramo Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Get a sense of humor Michael Bay. The rejected Dark Knight script was hilarious. I can't stand when people can't laugh at themselves.

Jim Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Whoa, Rudy. You hated Pearl Harbor, but loved The Island and Bad Boys 2. All three were big, loud, and technically beautiful, but the dialoge and stories were garbage. Transformers had moments of brilliance, but there were alot of groan-inducing scenes as well. I hope he takes what worked from the first movie and dump the extra crap.

Jon Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

With all the problems out there right now such as the economy, oil prices, the war amoung other The only thing that I wish above all others is that Michael Bay would stop having any hand in any movie. Seriously, who is the executive(s) that keep giving this chimp a gun.

Ben Foster for Freddie Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Having seen him be cute yet pure evil in 3:10 To Yuma, my vote is for Ben Foster for Freddy Krueger. But you know, I kinda like that Chris Meloni idea too!

Strepsi Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

The comment about not trying to "make it to the Third movie" alone, makes me a fan. I am old enough to have seen the otherwise excellent "Empire Strikes Back" and "Back to the Future II" in the theatre, and the audience BOOed THE ENDINGS! You've just watched an otherwise amazing movie, and the audience stood up and started boo'ing! Glad we won;t have that with Transformers II.

GGFan Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Michael if you are listening/reading this, and you are looking for your new "Nancy" for the "Nightmare" remake, you need to cast Leighton Meester from "Gossip Girl". Also Christopher Meloni for Freddy Kreuger.

B- Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

I get him. I think he's a good guy. I never forget how happy he looked when I saw him at a screening for The Texas Chainsaw remake. Looks like he snuck into a screening with average moviegoers to get their reaction. I really hope the new Friday the 13th movie works and is good.

Ed Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Though Transformers was visually stunning, Bay doesn't seem to care about story. There were so many holes and things that just didn't make sense (don't even get me started on John Turturro's horrible performance...where was Bay to stop him?). If he cared about the story (of any movie, not just Transformers) as much as he does the special effects, I think he would be one of the best directors out there.

Rudy Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

I hope people ate their words about Bay as a director. Now I'm not the biggest fan of his work (hated Pearl Harbor) But he has had his monents (love THE ISLAND and Bad Boys 2) But he was perfect to make Transformers. The only one I think could have made it better is MAYBe Spielberg himself. And though a certain amount of CGI was inevitable, the way it was seamlessly blended with live action effects and stunts was truly inspired. I asked for a live movie since I was 10 and in my opinion the man delivered. I can't wait for T2-Revenge of the Fallen. See even the title makes me giddy.
