Spike Lee to film Broadway's 'Passing Strange' for TV

Categories: Theater, TV Biz

Spike Lee is going to Broadway. The Oscar-nominated writer/director will be spending part of his July filming the Tony-winning production Passing Strange. Lee will film the musical by singer/songwriter Stew over the course of a weekend, shooting two shows with audiences and then a third one without. (He did a similar thing with his 2000 concert film The Original Kings of Comedy.) Passing Strange's producers are financing the production, and while no distribution deal has been set, sources believe it will air on cable television upon completion. The musical centers on a young black musician who sets off on a journey to find "the real" after being raised in a church-going middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood. It was originally developed at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab.

This musical is phenomenal and I'm sad to see it close, but happy that I'll hopefully be able to see it again in its filmed version. It's one of the best books and most intelligent musicals I've ever experienced.
The show is about many different things- one of them is ego and youthful obsession with self-expression...unlike Rob, I don't take that as the show itself being narcissistic, but rather that the young protagonist is very much going through a process of self discovery. Throughout the whole show, Stew references how youthful convictions are fleeting.

This is really exciting - Passing Strange is a brilliant show. I've been a fan since The Public Theater. It's hilarious, moving, full of smart and irreverent commentary about race, being an artist, the struggles to balance love and one's work....and the structure of the show - an (excellent) ensemble cast playing multiple shows combined with a rock show, is really smartly put together. And the songs are great - tuneful ballads for the Broadway crowd, punk rock, 80's performance art references, gospel rave-ups....incredible lyrics and riffs that get stuck in your head. Spike is a great match for the piece. Too bad it didn't win all the Tony's it deserved. But now it could be up for Oscars or Emmys or something.

Can't wait to see it again.

I really wanted to love this show. I really did. I love cutting-edge musical theatre. This, unfortunately, was repetitive, boring, and meandering. And worst of all, it was hands-down the most narcissistic piece of theatre I've ever seen. As someone in theatre, I have one good thing to say about it: the lighting was amazing. That's it. Honestly.

Tuneman, I love musicals and I loved this one too---so, there goes that theory. This is great news. I hope this gives the show the exposure it deserves.

This is a great groundbreaking show. And Spike Lee is the perfect choice to direct it!

Loved this musical -- prolly because i hate musicals!

Louise Lee Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Unfortunately the musical sucks

Good. I would hope more Broadway shows would consider doing this. Not everyone can head out to NY and be lucky to get a seat if not pay the high price tickets. I remember Legally Blonde: The Musical airing on MTV and even PBS showing some theatre shows as well. They should keep up this practice if at all possible.
