Justintheroux_l Hollywood is finally noticing Justin Theroux for something other than his soulful eyes and killer cheek bones. Sources tell EW.com that the celebrated character actor (Mulholland Drive, Six Feet Under) has just landed the sweetest writing gig in town: He's taking on the script for Iron Man 2. Marvel Studios won't confirm the deal, but Theroux has generated a lot of interest after early screenings of Tropic Thunder, the Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. comedy (out Aug. 13) he co-wrote with Etan Cohen and Stiller. Theroux made his directorial debut with last year's Billy Crudup/Mandy Moore dramedy Dedication and will now get first crack at writing the sequel to this summer's highest-grossing film so far.

What happened to the writer's who wrote Iron Man 1? Why can't they write this one as well?

Phil Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

All i can infer from this tidbit is that obviously Justin has ties to Downey through the TROPIC THUNDER pic, and perhaps Robert is a fan of his work, and spoke to Marvel on his behalf. Thats the best guess I can get from all this. Oh, and that maybe he's a comic book fan himself, and is familiar with IRON MAN, because weren't the guys who wrote X2 comic book fans too? Also, The writers on IRON MAN 2 need to not just make a sequel, but lead into the inevitable AVERNGERS INITIATIVE movie in a few years, so as much as this piece touts JT's goods, I can see inevitable re-writers and other writers being brought on board for that!

Yeah. Never gonna happen. It's good buzz for Justin but they would never hand the Iron Man script to Justin to write, not with two movies under his belt, one a Mandy Moore and the other a comedy that hasn't even come out yet. This reads like fake hype created to generate empty "buzz."

your comment doesn't make sense. If you don't want an inexperienced screenwriter, then don't recommend a comic book writer either. writing a screenplay is different from writing comics. that being said, theroux has some experience as a writer director, and to be honest the guys who did x-2 (still one of my favourite comic book movies) had about as much experience when they wrote that as theroux does now. remember, he has a ton of experience in the industry, and has written and directed, so let's give him a break.

This is a pretty bizarre bit of news.
As mush as I love JT, for his quirkiness BTW, I gotta wonder what precipitated the studio to consider him of all people for the job.
Very very weird...

I love it when actors turn out to be more than pretty faces.

good point Mr. Stark!

Dee Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

Umm who's this guy? Why not keep all the writers from the 1st IRON MAN instead of bringing in someone new..... This is why some sequels are bad... They nailed the first movie.. So why not go for it all again?

This guy better not mess it up..

Well, I guess I can cross out yet another so-called blockbuster in advance. Yes, I find Justin Theroux adorable, but, hiring a screenwriter who's so inexperienced is a REALLY BAD IDEA. Besides what's wrong with marvel studios that they don't want any of their comic book writers doing the script for one of their movies?!
