'Friday Night Lights' exec producer previews third season

Taylorkitsch_l You already know the good news: Friday Night Lights will indeed return for a third season — on DirecTV — starting Oct. 1. (NBC will air those 13 episodes again in 2009). Now here’s some better news: FNL exec producer Jason Katims gave EW.com a sneak peek at his playbook for the upcoming season. It's some pretty good scoop, so we'll have to put out a SPOILER ALERT for those who wish to avert their eyes at this time.

• The action will skip ahead about eight months to the fall and the final year of high school for several main characters, including Lyla (Minka Kelly), Tyra (Adrianne Palicki), Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch, pictured), and Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). “This season is going to be a lot about their senior year, the coming of age,” Katims says. “Who are they going to be? What are they going to do? Are they going to go to college or be stuck in Dillon? Or do they choose to stay in Dillon?”

• There is a possibility of increasing the length of each episode — and including slightly juicier content — for the run on DirecTV, but nothing has been determined yet.

• Tami (Connie Britton) has received a big promotion at school — from guidance counselor to principal. “It starts out with Coach [Chandler] loving it,” Katims says. “Tami’s bringing home this big paycheck. But at a certain point, he realizes that this woman is now technically his boss. It definitely tests them a little bit.” Especially when they don’t see eye-to-eye on certain academics-versus-athletics issues.

After the jump, Katmis previews season 3 romances: "[O]nce they’ve actually gotten involved, they both realize that they’re a complete odd couple."

sc• A couple of new faces (not yet cast) will pop up in Dillon, and one will cause a quarterback controversy. Said newcomer is “a freshman phenomenon who has been moved to Dillon from Dallas by his very wealthy parents to play on the Panthers and take Matt Saracen’s job,” Katims says. Also complicating Matt’s life is the sudden appearance of his mother. “He hasn’t seen her since he was probably seven years old,” says Katims. “One of the really interesting arcs this season is the very, very slow reconnection between Matt and his mother.”

• On the love front, Tim’s pursuit of Lyla has apparently paid off, as the two are now dating. “They are trying to have a mature relationship despite the fact that once they’ve actually gotten involved, they both realize that they’re a complete odd couple,” Katims says. Landry (Jesse Plemons) must cope with the fact that he and Tyra (Palicki) are in the Friend Zone as Tyra finds herself in a “hot-and-heavy, smoldering romance” with a local rodeo star. “The question we’re raising is whether he’s going to sidetrack her,” says Katims of Tyra’s new man. “She is adamantly trying to get into college and buck the odds and not become her mom and her sister.” As for Matt and Julie (Aimee Teegarden), the exes are spending more time together. Will there be a romantic reunion? “It starts as just reconnecting as friends and then it becomes potentially more than that,” Katims hints.

• The decision to say goodbye to graduates Smash (Gaius Charles) and Jason Street (Scott Porter) is “very sad, but it’s tempered for me by the fact that their stories are so strong,” Katims says, referencing the four-episode farewell arcs that each will have this season. “I’m really looking forward to seeing these two incredible actors dig into them.” Katims teases that Smash hits some kind of “bump in the road,” loses his scholarship, and is working at Alamo Freeze when Coach attempts to help him get back into a college. Meanwhile, to support his baby and prove to Erin (Tamara Jolaine) that he’s a worthy mate, new dad Jason tries his hand at the home-flipping business (and it involves the Garrity house).

• By the way, don’t rule out a return for Charles and/or Porter down the road: “We would love to have them back,” notes Katims. “Should either of them be available and want to come back — whether it is next season or the end of this season — that’s something we’re definitely going to want to pursue.”

What the heck. Mat Saracen a backup to a tiny little freshmen? Is it just me or is that totally messed up? So much for Smash saying last season that this was the season for Matt Saracen to get recruited.

I'M HOPING THIER WILL BE ANOTHER WAY TO SEE THE SHOW THAN DIRECT TV OR CD. I THINK THEY SHOULD LET US VIEW IT ONLINE

Chad Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

Darn. I don't get DirecTV. It did so bad in the ratings that NBC is only airing the reruns after DirecTV airs the first runs? I'm sure this will be the shows last season. Hope it's a good one.

Mike Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Riggins was definitely a senior in the first season. Sure, it's plausible that he got held back once. But I thought Lyla and Tyra were too - or at least juniors. I'll watch it, but, let's face it, this show was amazing for a season, and it's organic plot should have probably ended there.

deitcja Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

Dude--you were totally scooped by Ausiello. He put his piece in at 5:10. Holla!!!

Daedbird Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Im sorry, but these spoilers make me worry about FNL. Quite frankly, shouldn't Tim Riggins have graduated last year? There is no way he would be in the same grade as Lyla, Tyra, or Matt. Tyra and Lyla should have graduated after season 2, and this would be Matt/Landry's senior year, Julie should be a junior. What I loved about the first season, and parts of the second was that the show did not do the conventional (which is why I would have like to see a season cover Dillion not involving football, like the spring). To me, seeing Tim and Tyra fight to graduate, and have a life outside of high school would have been great. Also, was it ever stated that Tami has an administrative degree? It would have been nice to see this new season continue the short-lived second, to see if Smash would have played again, if there would have been a confrontation with Voodoo, with the old head coach, if the team would have made it to state.

I TOO WANTED LANDRY AND TYRA TOGETHER.BUT IT'S OK CANT WAIT FOR THE SHOW TO COME BACK ON.

clayb Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Wasn't Saracen supposed go live with his aunt and uncle in Oklahoma before his dad went back to Iraq? Where has his mother been? It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how any "reconnection" takes place.

Weren't Lyla and Jason going to go to Notre Dame together?

I don't really see why at this point the producers are limiting themselves to "once you leave high school your character needs to leave." This is never going to attract a huge teen fanbase, anyway. You can still call it FNL and see the high school stuff through Taylor family.

I want to see more of Street, Smash and all of the characters I got hooked on.

Katie Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

DirecTV? Oh crud. All we have is basic cable, and that is the only way we can get high speed internet here, so we're stuck with it for now. Oh well, eventually I'll get to see FNL's 3rd season!

***yawn***

Noelle Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Yes, Tim/Lyla! The "odd couple" comments better just be that they're cute and quirky together, not wrong for each other, because I've been waiting for them to be together! Saracen and his mom are sure to be heartbreaking and amazing and Tami as principal? I love it.

Matt Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

By the end of last season, Smash and Landry were the only two characters I still cared about and they're dumping one and screwing over the other? The "Principal" Chandler storyline sounds about as silly as Landry's "I killed a guy" one, especially considering that no reputable school district (including the one I work for) would allow a husband/wife to work at a school where one was the principal and one reported directly to the principal. When the wife of a friend of mine became principal of the elementary school he worked at for years, he was forced to transfer to another school.

Not sounding like this season is going to offer too much. I wonder if they'll actually play any football this time around?

Shari Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

Tim barely went to class last season. I don't think its completely farfetched to believe he was held back.

Amy Leigh Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

I've been waiting for 2 seasons to see Tim/Lyla finally become a couple. So the complete "odd couple" comment better be a quirky thing about the two of them instead of them realizing that they just don't belong together. I hope it's more of them being very different but for them it works.

I'd like to see Julie less whiney this season. She was so annoying last season that I kept wanting to see her shipped off to boarding school. Can't wait for the new season!

hair Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

I thought Tyra was even talking to Mrs. Coach the first season about going to college vs. not going to college, something about that storyline w/ the guy from LA. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad all these characters are coming back, but I feel like they're really asking us to suspend our disbelief by telling us that Tyra, Lyla, and Tim were all the same age as Matt, Landrew, and Julie.

texmex Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

i'm with matthew - tim riggins is now only starting his senior year? or has he been "held back" more than once? i know the regular school expectations don't apply to him and all, but seriously. :)

Matthew Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 06:29 AM EST

in the first season wasn't the quarterback gonna go to college and he being best friends with riggins imply that riggins is the same age or about that. Thus i am supposed to believe all those characters mentioned were 15 when the show started

Brandy Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

So, the whole dead guy thing that served to get landry and Tyra together ends with them being apart already? Glad I lived through that.

Although, Landry's dad and the car... that may have made it worth it.

Really stoked to see Mrs. Coach and Mr. Principal. Heh.

TV addict Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

one question I never see addressed - will these episodes be available on nbc.com in the fall, or will non-satellite people have to completely wait until 2009 to see them?

Scott Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

I started watching FNL after this past season ended. The strike had just started and I was like, "I need something to do." So I thumb tacked a whole bunch of pieces of paper together, and each had a name of a show I might watch on it.. Then standing back, I threw a dart, and it landed on the paper with FNL.. So I started watching it.. I got hooked, and within a week's time, I had seen the whole first season. Then another half week, and I saw the whole series put together. I just couldn't stop watching. I'm glad it's coming back. I for one think the changes (except for Charles and Porter leaving) are all good things..

Shari Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

SO excited about Lyla/Tim and Matt/Julie! Not to mention Mrs. Coach as the principal!

Get over yourself, AJ.

Melinda65 Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

Well, AJ, obviously you care enough to comment.

I thought we'd get to see Tyra and Landry as a couple, but they're going to be broken up? Argh.

AJ Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Who cares. Does anyone except the critics even watch this show? I've heard the ratings were horrible last year...surprised it wasn't cancelled.
