'Amazing Race' honcho teases new season

Amazingracepreview_l With the season 13 debut of CBS’ The Amazing Race looming just around the corner (okay, Sept. 28), exec producer Bertram Van Munster slipped us a few clues about the upcoming globetrot.

• The race takes 23 days, covers nearly 40,000 miles, spans five continents, and features some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Angkor Wat, Cambodia and La Paz, Bolivia.

• The youngest team is a tandem of two guys in their early 20s. “They’re made for television,” Van Munster says. “They’re supersmart — and they make terrible mistakes.” A pair of recent divorcees in their late 20s also vie for the million-dollar prize. “They were left with some financial debt, so they really have a motive to run around the world,” he says. And once again, expect a serving of granola — this time with a husband-wife squad of 60-something Oregon hippies. “They’re the real thing,” says Van Munster. “They come right out of the '60s. To a lot of people, it looks almost like they’re from a different planet.”

• As for the challenges, “We’ve really outdone ourselves in the department of outrageousness,”  Van Munster declares. “We have a situation in Bolivia where we have the [contestants] go down a cobblestone hill on very, very primitive bikes, and it’s just the most hilarious thing you’ve ever seen in your life. It’s a truly bone-jarring experience.” (Another must-see detour: A by-train-or-by-bus scavenger hunt in Moscow. )

• One familiar thing actually did happen on this race: The producers didn’t predict the winner. Says Van Munster, “We’ve been wrong every time, across the board.”

It would be nice if Aja and Ty were given as equal air time as the other racers.

I just love this show and have watched every season since it began. The all-star version was just repeated this weekend on Fox Reality channel. It reminded me again why I watch! can't wait!

Rocky Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

we have followed this show for years and noticed that it has become a bit dull. So we applied for this season (we're perfect for this show) and not even getting a local city call, we've come to question whether if they are choosing contestants wisely or just filling their own stereotypes. Yeah, I'm bitter.

I can't stand it! SO exciting! Best show on t.v., bar none. Can't WAIT for Sept. 28. And I agree that we need two seasons per calendar year! Please!!!

Hallelujah! Finally, it's back! I've missed you, Phil. And I'm assuming Josh Wolk is doing the recaps. I live for them!

khmerlander Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I am Cambodian and a fan of Amazing Race, and extra excited that they're going to Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

Mark Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

I love TAR, but was disappointed to read about that early twenties tandem team. I thought the reason last season was the best one was precisely because they didn't have one alpha male, designated front runner team like the hippies or the addicts. I think the only male-male team of last season was the klutz and his hilarious grandfather, hardly a pace-setting team. I loved the feeling that every single week, absolutely anyone could come in first, and absolutely anyone could be eliminated.

Miss M Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I have missed TAR so much! I am a Race addict as well. I also can't live with Josh recapping TAR. 8 weeks and counting.....

cj Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

"life just seems better when Amazing Race is on" - I agree!! It's okay to admit. :) It makes me look forward to rather than dread Sun. night. If only it didn't get bumped back by Sunday sport events so often....

Vivi Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

Yay, Amazing Race! I so wanna be on that show.

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Excellent...I HOPE JOSH WOLK IS WRITING THE RECAPS!!!!!

Delboy Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

Nice to see it's been given an actual start-of-the-season starting date, rather than being held back to replace whatever show is first to get the plug pulled on it.

dee Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

I agree with all the comments here, life is better when the Amazing Race is on. Please CBS, show Amazing Race at least twice this year. I always start the show out by saying "I love this show" and it seems like alot of other people do too.

lilly Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

I love AR but what I am more excited about is Josh Wolk's TV watch recaps Monday morning. I haven't snorted coffee out my nose in months!

jones Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

To Aaron-
Not at all, I agree. I really like its time slot on Sunday night. I am always get a little sad on Sunday nights b/c the weekend is coming to an end and AR puts a smile on my face instead.

sas Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 07:24 AM EST

Can't wait for AR to start. It's one show we watch with the whole family. Educational and fun. Keep them coming!

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 03:24 AM EST

I'm a Race addict! I only discovered the show in Season 9. Any chance you can put old episodes of race for sale on iTunes?

LJ Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 02:44 AM EST

Thank goodness TAR is back! It seems so long since the TAR12 and the horrible winner crossed the finish line.

Ed Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

Pleased as anything that TAR is back...hope CBS has the brains to put two races on this year...really miss it only once a year

Mr EXCITED Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

I'm excited!!
& I'm always excited for amazing race... I love the show! Even after 12 times around, after hundreds of pitstops and challeges.. I still get excited! I'm EXCITED!!!

Ricky Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

I miss the hell out of this show when it's not on... so excited it's back. Having it on once or twice a year is genius because you don't get sick of it and are super excited when it finally returns.

Melanie Boatswain-Watson Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

So excited for TAR's return! Especially seeing that they're going to Angkor Wat, I was just there in May!

Alan Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

So So So So Excited about TAR coming back. I miss it so much!

Aaron Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

Is it sad that life just seems better when Amazing Race is on?

Rhonda Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

My 7-year-old niece LOVES this show and is so excited that it's coming back and the day after her birthday to boot. We all watch and cheer together every week. Yay for it's return!

A. Fan Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

A. Race is only the best reality TV show of all time.

BloggingFun Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

Yes! Thank you for posting the premiere date and giving us a little inside scoop to get us excited before it airs. I love this show and can't wait for it to come back on!
