Lil Wayne scores first million-unit album debut in three years

Jun 18, 2008, 06:18 PM | by Chris Willman

Categories: Charts, Music Biz

Lilwayne2_l Many music-biz types were convinced we'd never again see an album sell a million copies in a week. It hadn't happened since 50 Cent's The Massacre topped the mark in 2005. Yet Lil Wayne is proof that if you build something fans truly want, even in the depressed market of 2008, they will come. His Tha Carter III (No. 1) exceeded all projections by selling just a hair over 1 million units — particularly impressive considering that the rapper's previous best sales week was a mere 238,000.

That huge debut left Plies' Definition of Real looking like small potatoes at No. 2 with 215,000 units — a figure that usually would be more than enough to top the Nielsen Soundscan/Billboard chart. But they weren't the only new releases worth mentioning. N.E.R.D.'s long-awaited Seeing Sounds debuted at No. 7 with 80,000, followed by Alanis Morissette's Flavors of Entanglement at No. 8 with 70,000. Critical and festival favorite My Morning Jacket made a first-time appearance in the top 10 of the album chart by selling 49,000 and coming in at No. 9. Other debuts of note included country duo Montgomery Gentry at No. 20 (27,000 copies), Emmylou Harris at No. 22 (also 27,000), the first solo effort from Jakob Dylan at No. 24 (24,000), and the iCarly soundtrack at No. 28 (20,000).

In the singles world, Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" held onto the top spot on the digital songs chart...and for the first time in their career, the British foursome also took control of the Hot 100, which combines sales and airplay. Next week, they're expected to easily top the album chart as well. Based on Tuesday's first day of sales, Viva la Vida, the band's fourth album, should sell some 600,000 copies. Though iTunes doesn't usually release its sales figures, the online music store took the unusual step of announcing that the album sold 140,000 on that site just on its first day. That shatters the iTunes record for sales in an entire week, previously held by Jack Johnson — and there are six days still left to go. For the hangdog music biz, June really is bustin' out all over.

Dude has a teardrop tatoo right? So that means that he killed someone right? So all of his fans support a murderer right? People please, think about where your money is going.

Angel Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Lil Wayne is overrated. The people who think his lyrics are clever and have deep metaphors must have an 8th grade reading level or lower. It sounds like he used a 1st grade vocabulary workbook for suffixes to help find his simple rhyming words.
You can't top Biggie with his dope flows and mad storytelling skills that painted vivid pictures. Who wants to think about being a venreal disease like a mentrual bleed? The only things I will give props to Lil Wayne for is being in the business for as long as he has, getting paid well for something that he loves to do, knowing how to MARKET himself and having sick beats. In addition, for being able to sell millions of records to people who love lyrics that sound like the person rapping is running out of things to say and just pulling crap out of his butt, and where the same words are being repeated over and over. Lil Wayne can’t freestyle on the fly. Look him up on youtube and see him freeze. Straight weak!!

Telly Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

This goes to Jizza...
Not to take anything away from Nas, he is one of the most intelligent and lyrical cats alive, but to say We'd never see the likes of him or Mos Def on a Lollipop song, you must have forgot about "Owe me back" with Ginuwine. Every rapper does it... they crossover. There's a handfull that haven't and the proof is in the pudding, they are not selling records. But lets not forget, hip hop is music... its supposed to be fun... if you're looking to get some knowledge out of a song, something is truly wrong... thats what they have schools for hahahaha... Lil Wayne said it best, "Authritist in my hand from writing.
But i'ma docter they don't understand my writing.
So i stop writing.
Now i'm like lighting.
And you ain't Vince Young so don't clash with the Titans." He is a martian!!

DR Beast Killa Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

Yo... y'all give it a rest. Take a minute and find some real s**t to do wit' yo time. Lil Wayne this and Jay-Z that...please! I bust my ass in the studio up to fourteen hours at a time... layin' down solid lyrics to some of the best and most contemporary s**t imaginable. I do it all for the love of the game not fo' the "cheese and tha fame".

Weezy ain' readin' yo' punk ass remarks. He made it. Game over! Nothin' wrong wit' appreciating good music (and we all like different things so it's all good), but seriously... most rappers these days sound so illiterate and crank out such bulls**t, it's hard to believe there are people out there stupid enough to get in a verbal battle in defense of these clowns (who...by the way, are just playin' y'all like the suckers you are). Get yo' heads out yo' ass and find somethin' positive to do fo' yourself and yo' family. Peace!

lady tee Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

You weezy haters need to fall back! if your so called cassidy and ludacris are so good why aint they sellin a million!!! no disrespect to the other rappers who gettin they hustle on!! Weezy came from the bottom to the top and now he aint got nuthin but haters but keep it comin cause its just his motivation! you can say what you want bout weezy he aint goin to give a f@*k, and still know he is the BEST RAPPER ALIVE!! He aint dropped a CD of his own in a minute but he was still selling out shows with people in the crowd knowing every lyric to his songs (which are on mixtapes/colaborations) that arent even played on the radio, which means his fans is hungry for his music and yall sayin he aint the s*!t!!! fallback HATERS. Weezy is the
S*!T! The Carter 3 is hot as F*@k. My baby did his thang and hes goin to keep doin his thang with or without your support! Love you Weezy Baby!!!
Haters get ready for "The Carter 4" so you can have something else to hate on cuz guranteed this S*!t is bout to be "the opposite of soft"....Carter 3 in stores now. if you aint got it go get it!

Chris Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 04:04 AM EST

Yo as far as lil wayne goes, I respect him for sellin 1 million but dont call yourself the best rapper alive. Now in days record sales dont make you the best. Look at the 3 who sold the most, lil wayne, kanye and 50. LOL thats funny to me. 50 is garbage Get Rich or Die Tryin was Dr. Dre's album because the beats is what was so hot on it. Neither one of the other 2 are lyrical. They cant touch guys like Ludacris, Jadakiss, Jay-z, Cassidy or even the most lyrical rapper out right now, Lupe Fiasco. And Jada dont even sale like that but theres not too many better out there. Cassidy album flopped but I bet you if you put him in a booth with lil wayne he would destroy him. This is what I mean by record sales mean nothing.

Schwip Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

What Nas said is true, hip hop is dead. Seriously, you respect Lil Wayne because he sold a million albums. You know what people thought was hot before him? Crank That Soulja Boi.

Immortal Technique said it best:
cuz if you go platinum, it's got nothing to do with luck
it just means that a million people are stupid as f*ck

p00bz Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

i see it this way......majority of these rappers r tlkin ab0ut the same thing.why point the finger at weezy??
n0 he's n0t teachin us anything....but neither is 50cent....0r any 0tha kn0wn rapper.if yu wanna be taught sumthin,yu take wutz given and get sumthing 0ut 0f it.f0r example if weezy is puttin 0ut [bullshyt]then y n0t say yu wuddnt want that 2 b yu nd d0 thingz t0tally 0pp0site fr0m wut he's said 0r d0ne. itz the viewers n0t him!

Wayne is killing the game right now. The carter III is definitely not better than the carter I or II but his s#!t was bootlegged so much and his release date was pushed back so much that he had to put some filler s#!t on there and it still rocks harder than all other rap albums put out this year. Plus U can tell that he is practically free styling his whole album. Yeah...it's not the most thought provoking life changing intellectual rap lyrics I have ever heard but he did his whole album off the top of his head. And it still rocks. Plus U know what his skill level is. He gives us his best s#!t for free. He's been a beast since he was 15 years old but the world is just catching up. I don't care what nobody says his first album "the block is hot" was the ish and he was just a baby. S#!t compared to these other rap dudes he's still a baby. He's only 25. This guy has mixtapes out that are pooping on most of the rap albums that have been coming out in the past two years.

I used to be a big Lil'wayne fan until I listened to reggae properly.I guess we all have different tastes but someone once asked me what lil'wayne taught me.then it hit me,Lil'wayne is just funny,he's damn smart but never said anything of substance that can be of any help to anyone's life!y'all can distribute your hate all u want(like he does)but your conscious knows this is true(if u still have one)and such an influencial black person should try uplift his bredrins but he doesn't spread any positive vibration! How long do we have to hear about drugdealing, sex and killing brothers and sisters! If that's some rapper's reality he shouldn't encourage others to do the same or make it look cool!Lil'wayne is damn influencial, why can't he change the world, for the better!I still listen to him but never take him seriously..Stay true.Africa rise!

adding to what i just said...jay z basicaly officialy handed him the torch as the best rapper and says its his turn to rule over the hip-hop game...
I took so much change
From this rap game
It's your go!
(Hey Mr. Carter)
Young!
those are jay z's last words on his verse of mr.carter lil wayne...has taken over

Polo Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 02:46 AM EST

lil wayne does not have a ghost writer...those are rumors started to bring down the best rapper out now...lil waynes writes his own music writes music for others to sing with him in his songs and rappers pay him no less than 75k for him to write a remix to there song...if he likes the beat he sells his writing for no less than 75k if they asked him to and he doesnt care much about the song its 100k or more depending on who asked...his lyrics are his and to all the haters...just quit hating and admit it that boy is hotter than the sun...

EXPO Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I LIKED WAYNE MUSIC! WHEN I THOUGHT IT WAS HIS MUSIC! RUMMOR IS WAYNE HAS OR HAD A GHOST WRITER/S AND HE HAS NOT DENIED IT. OTHER CATS IN THE INDUSTRY HAVE GHOST WRITERS BUT THERE NOT CLAIMING TO BE THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE! ONE WOULD THINK THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE WOULD HAVE HIS OWN LYRICS. YES HE'S SOLD A MILL IN HIS FIRST WEEK! YES HES DOING BIG THINGS AND HE'S PROBABLE ON MORE VIDEOS THAN ONE WOULD CARE TO COUNT. GOD BLESS THE BROTHER FOR HIS SUCCES!! BUT IN HIP HOP CULTURE SINCE HIP HOP WAS CREATED THER WAS A WORD THAT WOULD/COULD MAKE YOU OR BRAKE YOU AND IT WAS WETHER YOU WERE OR WEREN'T WACK! (O) BUT WAIT NOW IF YOU CONSIDER A RAPPER TO BE WACK YOUR A HATTER END OF CONVO. HOW DOES THIS WORK? WHY CANN'T A GARBAGE RAPPER JUST BE WACK>_. LIL WAYNE HAS A LOT OF FANS AND THATS COOL I WAS ONE AT ONE POINT. BUT YOU WOULD THINK SOMEONE WHO WENT TO COLLEGE WOULD BE ABLE TO SEND A BETTER MESSAGE AND WOULD BE WAY MORE LYRICAL! WAYNE A LYRICIST NO! GREAT PERFORMER YES SIR!!

thebest Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

Lil wayne is def. not "the best rapper alive" but! I think its awesome that him and kanye are making people ACTUALLY buy cds. Haha. Wayne is not the best but he deserves it after releasing hot mixtape after another. Whether you like him or not he's number 1. (:

Perry Jay Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

Alright Kiddies I Think Its Ignorant To Say That Lil Wayne Sucks And Is Not Hip-Hop.He Is One Of The Top Two Rappers Out Right Now,The Other One Being Kanye West. His Lyrics Might Not Match To What You Would Perfer Them To But He Is Expressing Hiself Which Is Part Of Hip-Hop.Hip-Hop Needs Balance Where You Have Your Jay-z Nas Mos Def Talib Kweli And Lupe Fiasco There A Need Of Lil Wayne T.I. And Ludacris.Though They Are Whack Rappers Out There Such As Souja Boy,Bossie,And Tony Yayo The Rappers That Were Part Of That Balance Is Crucial To Hip-Hop.Leave Your Ignorant Comments To Yourself If You Don't Like That Side Of The Balance Of Hip-Hop Then Don't Listen To It If You Do Then Listen To It.Its Not That Hard Folks.

jizza Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

why doesnt everyone get off of lil waynes nuts? the kid is far from the best rapper alive, let alone the best lyricist.

Tha Carter III is a joke for someone who calims to be the "best rapper ever"

His time is never coming, just bc he popped off with tha carter II doesnt make you better at your work than a mos def or jay z

and for all you who think his metaphors are so mind blowing, listen to a f*ing lupe or nas track, they have a little something called intelligence. you'll never see those rappers appear on a song like duffel bag boy or lollipop, that ish is pathetic as far as word play goes

Just a reular dude Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

Hey regular white queer or whatever your name is. I don't even know why I am wasting my time responding to ignorance. It's just funny that you have to use the internet to express your views try sayin that on the street I would even give you about five minutes of air time before that inbred ass of yours gets beat down.

Regular White Guy, you must be an dumb racist who does not know many black folks. You probably are a back woods, good ol' boy to make a comment like that. Or else you just need to hang with a better crowd. There are millions of intelligent young black people who could teach you a thing or two.

The producers of "DontGetIt" are frauds.....

The track is a bad attempt at stealing a track that was produced in 2003 by a producer out of Virginia named Justice. It is funny to hear that they(the frauds) claimed that "Nobody else ever heard it". Someone else produced it you lames. It has been heard and spit on by a female artist named Fyre, also out of VA. Just go to www.myspace.com/nobudgetnobeats to hear what it really sounds like. It is unfortunate that the industry is full of snakes, so to the original producer, congrats and to the two frauds, Rodnae & Mousa, get your weight up rookies..

Outside of these lames, the album is great...

regular black woman Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

In response to the regular white guy, to say that african americans are weak minded and are helping enforce a self fulfilling prophecy, please do your homework before spewing your ignorance. More than 75% of all hip-hop is purchased by young white males! You guys are the ones to help talented artist like Wayne sell a million units in a week. If you actually take the time to listen to what he says on this album then you will find there is much more depth in his lyrics than he's given credit for. The problem is racist people such as yourself are too quick to judge and too slow to pay attention. If you are not into Lil Wayne then you should not be on this site commenting. We don't need another racists because trust we have heard it all before! If you want to impress us find something authentic to say that you can back up with facts!

He's a musician? Since when are rappers musicians? That implies actually knowing music theory, you know, term like lydian, mixolodian, scales, time signatures, how to actually play an instrument. As opposed to sampling other people's actual music (read ripping off), operating drum machines, walking around with pants so loose that your skivvies are on display, and getting arrested on occasion just to keep it real. Get a life!

GG Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

That dude Wayne is a rapper!! HIS JOB IS TO SALE RECORDS u dig?! Music IS a form of education but music ISN'T real. And we all know dat! Lil WAyne aint the only one lyin in his texts! But he the only one that can put words together like dat! We aint never heard stuffs like wat he says before! Thats why he the best! He keeps comin up with crazy material! The C3 ain't the best Carter I dnt think, but it is because of the numbers it put up! And its the best right now so he is the best! Now should everybody adore him the way they do! Who am I to tell you wat to do!? To be where he at he had his own stuggle so to say that somebody else needs more exposure in order to show us wat they got! They obviously at the bottom of the ladder since dnt nobody kno about them! But u know work pays off so good luck to all you "best rappers alive" ahaha

Jason Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I agree with mrz carter, lil wayne is the best. In my 27 years on earth (20 of which i have been buying music) there have been only like 20 albums that I liked through and through and C3 is one of them!!! You can't help but to bob ya head when listening to it.

yungslim Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

yo alot of people are saying stupid stuff about Lil Wayne, but they cant name no artist alive who has done what he has done. name someone who has wrote over 1,500 verses and 1,000 hooks over a 2 year span for free and still make good music. The man is a genius I would put him up against anybody in the game he deserves his platinum album even if it is just above average. If wayne wasnt the best then why hasnt any other rapper said different?... Okay then shut up.

If you want to hear someone actually say something, myspace.com/bullfish1L came across that page and actually liked it and I dont like hip hop. Least hes talking about something important. Lets see this fella get all the help Lil wayne gets and see what he can do. Im tired of hearing bad music from all genres. Music is a form of education as its repeated over and over and over again and it does alter young perceptions and also makes hip hop sound like a party and not an art.

Garbage Man Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Waste of money hes an idiot. And anyone who supports his type of hip hop are idiots..wait this is america... lol letting yourselves get charged 4 bucks a gallon for gas

The Listener Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Why spend 15 to 20 dollars on a CD that you could download for free. People are idiots. Like one comment stated one million dummies:) I gain off the dummies though. Continue to put them on lime wire so I can continue to enjoy free music. Peace Out!!

RayT Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

Does anybody know ANYONE who actually bought this?! It reminds me of Chris Rock's comment about the Spice Girls' millions and millions of albums sold: "The Spice Girls are kind of like heroin, you know somebody's doing it, but nobody want to admit it."

he a gud guy love his style not ayt bt tyt bravo weezy u de bomb.....

cc Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

Yeah. I don't understand why an article titled "Lil Wayne scores first million-unit album debut in three years" only contains four sentences about his number one album. Then skips mentioning albums 3 through 7 and goes on to talk about Coldplay.

Reality Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

I know America has its fair share of idiots, but I didn't think there were a million of them.

InfamousS1W Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I don't hate the on the brotha's cash flow ,but If Lil Wayne is #1, then the whole world is retarded. Where's the real hip hop music?

stopurh8in Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

pina Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

ey he is one of my favorite singers i lov him

Krayzeman Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

I'm hearing from industry people that Cash Money bought a few hundred thousand records of Lil Wayne's. How you gonna go from 238,000 units your 1st week of your last record to 1 million this time? Somethin fishy goin on...

Marr Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I think this is a great acheivement for Lil Wayne, and some may say his lyrics are crude, in which in some songs they are, but he's the hottest rapper right now point blank. I think if you listen to some of the analogies they are spectactular. You can't hate the player, hate the game.

NYC4DOE Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Lil wayne is a good rapper talented in his own way of being a lyrical genius hes what's hot out now but to call him the best would be an obscure gesture i call absurd he's at a point in his carreer that anything he says will get people hype and they'll say its hot where if another rapper said the same like he wouldnt be considered so great.. its all about the swagger but cant hate on the man hes doing his thing

Bing Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

BTW.. weezy was bootlegged 2 weeks before the debut and everyone including the radio stations where playing all his songs. Usually that would be back, but could have worked out in his favor since ALL the songs on the album are banana's.
weezy for prez if he doesn't go to jail..lol

meg Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

hey he is so hot... mmmmmm....mmmmmm.mmmm!!!!!!

Kyugen Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Lil Wayne...the facts are there...1 million copies in a week...some can say oh he is garbage...others like me support him...no im a downloader...lol but he is my favorite rapper because of his quality and quantity...after hearing all his interviews..he says music is his life...now everyone think about what ur best at...the feelign its gets u...his is music...he's been doin it since age 11...so he's been 'training' and putting the necessary work in...i got tha carter 3...some songs i like some not so much..but he is indeed an artist and he inspires me to step my game up in every aspect of my life..i mean even if you call him garbage...he is stacks of millions of dollars richer than you will probably ever be...it seems natural to hate..i myself find myself wanting to hate...but then i applaude him and congratulate...if i could be as good in something as he is in rap...Bravo Dwayne Michael Carter

Leeky Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Whether you like it or not the man sold 1 million copies the first week. What is more a compliment is that he sold it while his album leaked an entire week before it was released. Best Rapper Alive no f^&king way that is Jay-Z we all know that but what he has done is work hard and get rewarded for it. The American Dream no matter how you look at it.

Congrats Lil Wanye.

Johnny Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

Anybody who disses him needs to get their head on straight he the best there is

Mitch Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

I agree with Tommy. Wayne has put in major work.

Weezy is hella Sleazy Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

hmmm...don't have any particular thoughts on this guy, but I wanna know who the 1 million human-beings are that bought this record?

OMG The cover is disturbing Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

The title says it all...

Mikey Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

I agree with Yasmine - the lyrics to Lollipop are too crude for basic Radio play - I've heard kids singing this and it ain't fun.

Da Game Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Yall are all gay

Yasmine Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I just don't understand the hype that surrounds this character? The melodies are the highlight, that's about it. The leading song 'Lollipop' I really thing that the flow and the beat/melody is tight, but I have trouble listening to this because of its lyrics!

Da Game Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

U SUCK LIL WAYNE >
