Jeffrey Tambor talks about a possible 'Arrested Development' movie

Jun 30, 2008, 11:18 AM | by Lynette Rice

Categories: Movie Biz, TV Biz

Jeffreytambor_l Bluth family lovers, rejoice! Former Arrested Development costar Jeffrey Tambor has confirmed published reports that a movie version of the Emmy-winning Fox comedy is in the works. “After months of speculation, I think we have finally figured out for sure that we are indeed doing an Arrested Development movie," Tambor told EW.com at the premiere of Hellboy II on Saturday, the closing night of the L.A. Film Festival. "I am very excited about that. I love that cast and crew and I felt like we had more to say."

The series, which aired for three seasons, starred Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, and Michael Cera. The single-camera comedy was beloved by critics, but was never a ratings bonanza for Fox, which canceled the show a year after it won the Emmy award for best comedy. I just watched every episode...OMG, I can't believe I missed this show when it was on the air. So intelligent, so funny. You have to have half a brain to make the connections but it is such a great mental and hysterical experience. I cannot wait for the movie, it needs the original characters, maybe Bob Loblaw can convince them! Go Bluths!

OMG! I loved this show. I can't beleive it. I mean I talk about this show to people who have never heard about it. They needed to wait a longer time before cancelling. Can't wait to see the movie

did someone here seriously make a comparison between arrested development and friday night lights? and actually say that arrested development isn't as good? i need to take another forget-me-now.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Nina Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

One of the greatest shows ever. Tragically cancelled by Fox (hmm, didn't they also cancel Firefly?) after a too brief run. I always hoped that someone at the studio would say, "I've made a terrible mistake." I am thrilled to hear the movie will happen. I sincerely hope they reassemble the entire cast for it and that we see some of the great supporting players as well. I have re-watched the series about 5 times and still find undiscovered humor in it. Truly well-written, well-acted and under-appreciated.

There are three types of people in this world. Those that unconditionally love Arrested Development, Those, due to Fox's unforgiveable poor handling and promotion, who never got into Arrested Development, and the type are dead people, because even people in a coma still fall into one of the two previous groups.

Breathe Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

This is better than pennies falling from the sky. They won't even need the "Free Chicken" magic trick to pull people out to see it.

Bluths Live! Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

This movie is going to be a great success. Reminds me of the return of "Family Guy." It's as Ann as the nose on plain's face.

Robert Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

Good lord RT, not an exaggeration to call it the best ever? Well, yeah it is. It is, IMO, the funniest American comedy ever (after only the British shows FAWLTY TOWERS and MONTY PYTHON). Only 30 ROCK since AD has been anywhere near its league in quality of humor. I've lent my DVDs to so many potential new fans that they are close to worn out. As I said, easily my favorite American half-hour comedy. (Though I'd still rank it below shows like BUFFY, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA [the new one], FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, THE WIRE, SIX FEET UNDER, and others in the "Best Ever" debate.)

RT Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

good holy god, this is the best news! The BEST show EVER on TV. No exaggeration, whatever the opposite of exaggeration is, that's what this is.

My gut is telling me no, but then again, my gut is very hungry.

Franklin Delano Bluth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:24 PM EST

To all those who said the second and third seasons of AD were horrible, you can kiss my black $$$! Oh wait, I dyed myself white didn't I?

Franklin Delano Bluth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

"I blue myself."

I loved AD from the beginning. I tried telling all of my friends of it's genius yet it took it going off the air after 53 hilarious episodes for them to come around. The show has now joined cult status and will be a huge hit at the movies.

CharlotteLoveAD Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

I am a new fan and i love this show. It is my favorite, and i am kicking myself for not watching it when it was on the air. I am so glad to hear that there is going to be a movie!! Cant wait to see them all together again!

spaceman Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

the funniest line i EVER heard ever was from the first episode of the first season where the mother, complaining about the gay pirates states "they're so flamboyant and overly dramatic that it makes me want to light myself on fire!" pure and subtle genious!

Those are balls Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

It's too bad people couldn't recognize genius when this show was on. Easily the funniest thing on TV. As some of the other posters have noted, you actually had to be intelligent to enjoy this show, and unfortunately, the world is full of idiots. And yes, that especially is directed to anyone who is knocking AD here. 'America's Got Talent' and David Hasselhoff do not count as quality entertainment.

Narrator: Tobias listens to a day's worth of his own words, to see what Michael was referring to...
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] ... even if it means me taking a chubby, I will suck it up.
Tobias Fünke: Nothing wrong with that.
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] Oh, I've been in the film business for a while, but I just can't seem to get one in the can.
Tobias Fünke: It's out of context.
Tobias Fünke: [on tape] I wouldn't mind kissing that man between the cheeks, so to speak.
Narrator: ...and he realized there is something distinct about the way he speaks.
Tobias Fünke: Tobias, you blowhard!

AD was cancelled because most of America is too stupid to understand humor if it is not accompanied by a laugh track that tells them when to giggle. Example from AD: The brothers are talking about a yacht called the Seaward. Just as one brother says, "Get rid of the Seaward," their mother walks in. She says, "I'll leave when I'm good and ready." If you don't recognize this as one of the funniest lines ever spoken on TV, you are a nitwit.

After borrowing all three AD seasons from friends, we bought Season 1 and can't wait to get the rest. Heck yeah, we'd pay to see the movie!

Still can't believe this show is off the air. Best show ever. Thanks Fox for getting rid of this and giving us "Skating with celebrities."

I'd see the movie at least a dozen times.

Lindsay Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

An awesome idea for the trailer-- anything that involves Franklin with "The Final Countdown" playing in the background. Absolutely perfect news on a Monday!!

Connor Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

At its lowest point-- Friday night, against the Olympic opening ceremonies, where the final 4 episodes were lumped together with zero promotion-- there were 4 million rabid die hard fans tuning in. All 4 million of those people will be at the movie on opening night, and most of them will go back for second and third viewings. They will buy the DVD. They will buy more DVDs as gifts for their friends.

And that's not even counting the millions who weren't tuning in that night-- those who didn't realize it was on, those who discovered it later on DVD and hulu, those who couldn't find it in its erratic 3rd season scheduling. The myth that "no one" tuned in to this show for free is ridiculous. (You could easily say that "no one" watches The Daily Show if you're going to discount millions of devoted viewers.)

Plus, the AD movie will benefit from the presence of a certain Michael Cera, he of two of the biggest hits of 2007, with many more on the way-- including the AD movie!

peteypabs Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

not a terrible idea, box office wise.
if juno could make 150 million, i'm sure this could approach that with a holiday '09 release during awards season and perhaps ron howard's name attached as director and a similar "funny and tender" campaign strategy much like juno deftly employed. also consider the way that the family guy DVDs reignited it's run on TV, perhaps solid DVD sales of AD might propel it on the big screen

hermano Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

never-nudes unite!!!!

DC Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Naysayers talking about how this movie won't make money forget the power of the cult following. A small amount of truely devoted fans will always keep a TV show going longer than a large amount of fickle viewers. That is why love for Arrested Development will be passed down for years to come unlike the OC or something like that.

Lolita Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

This is awesome news!! Bring on the Bluths!!! I love Buster!!

dan jones Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

I always this show was vastly overrated. It wasn't awful, but I can see why no one really watched it. That being said, I'm absolutely shocked that Fox is pouring their money into a movie version of something people wouldn't even watch when it was free. I've got 10-1 odds right now this thing bombs.... anyone taking?

Verity Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Frowny McBeard Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

Man, I'll see the movie at least four times in theatres, but it won't be all the AD it can be unless Carl Weathers is involved.

Julie Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

AWESOME! :)

B- Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

If the show averaged 4 million rabidly crazy obsessed viewers a week, there is an instant 35-40 million dollars right there at the box office. Even if that was the final domestic total, let's not forget the DVD sales. At 15 bucks a pop you are looking at an easy 50+ million in DVD sales alone from fans of the show. So this is a lucrative idea for Fox in terms of making some sure thing profit. Hopefully Warner Brothers would do the same with Veronica Mars.

iheartbuster Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

This is great news! Now all five of us who watched the show will be in the theater! Together! I've got my cut-offs ready, I've been practicing magic, and I kissed my cousin. I can't wait to protest this movie. "Arrested Development will arrest your soul!" All those who watch will go straight to hell.

Bryan Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

This was *exactly* the news I needed to hear on this Monday. Precisely what I needed to get through this day.

rockgolf Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Sorry, Bob Loblaw is busy maintaining the Bob Loblaw Law Blog. I expect the plot will be the wedding of George Michael & Mebbe, since it was revealed that Portia Del Rossi's character was adopted and so they aren't related.

In real numbers, AD had twice the audience of Sex & The City, and they are 3 times as rabid.

Ron Howard to direct?

C Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

This news makes me very happy! I've been hoping for an AD movie since I learned the series was going to be canceled after the 3rd season.

Tino Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Scott - the show gained many more fans through DVD and hulu, gathering a sizable cult following. With what will likely be a modest budget, the movie should do just fine in the theater and on DVD. Plus, who cares - it's brilliant.

loligirl Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Because Scott while AD was never a ratings winner it has garnered quite a rabid fan base on DVD. Plus throw in the revival of Jason Bateman who is in everything these days and the recent successes of Michael Cera and it might actually get some new fans. I just hope Anne Veal is in it----her?

Scott Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

No one sat at home and watched it for free. Why would they think people will go out and pay to watch it?

Tenna Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

What a fun, sexy time for AD fans! ;)

Gary Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Hopefully they will have their lawyer Bob Loblaw in the movie as well.

BDB Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Perhaps a significant box office success can bring it back to tv, ala dvd sales reviving Family Guy. A Tobias-phile can dream!
