Seth Rogen's 'The Green Hornet' gets a green light

Sethrogen_l Sony is moving forward with what may be the most unlikely superhero film yet: The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen. The Knocked Up star will play Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper and spends his nights fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato. Additionally, Rogen is currently penning the film's script with his writing partner, Evan Goldberg (Superbad); Sony has yet to hire a director for the project. Hornet is due in theaters on June 25, 2010.

OH BOY I CAN'T WAIT TO MOVE TO HOLLYWOOD. THEY JUST GIVE MONEY AWAY FOR USLESS FILMS SUCH AS THIS. THE GREEN HORNET WILL SINK AND SETH IS THE COMPLETELY WRONG CHOICE . TO THINK THE WOULD HAVE GONE WITH MAYBE A MORE CHISELED ACTOR SUCH AS BRAD PITT AND MAYBE JET LI.. MADE THE FILM DARK AS DARK NIGHT THEN YOU GOT A POSSIBLE HIT. I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE IT AS A EXC. FOR THE STUDIOS SINCE THEY ARE BURNING THE HOUSE DOWN ALREADY.

I'm reallty looking forwarding to this new take on the Green Hornet. I agree with maxwell19596. Stephen Chow is really awesome. To have him in the movie would be great. Adding his "mo lei tau" style to an American is something I would like to see. About this being another superhero movie. Most of them suck. It would be interesting to see an Apatow produced superhero movie. Pineapple express was his first venture into doing an action genre, even though it had lots of comedy, and it was pretty good. But imagine how an Apatow produced, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg written, and also starring Stephen Chow movie would be like. Pretty Awesome.

Abso. Lutey. Not.

Horrible news...horrible. And to make mattter worse, Hes writing it. No...thats like a star juvenial actor claiming to helm the Batman series...No. >(...not at all, is this acceptable. Not at all.

George Cloony & the kid from the bangkok Warrior or wutever, would've been the equivalent of RBJ casting in Iron Man.

Not acceptable. This film WILL FAIL, mark my words.

I have been waiting for years to see
the Green Hornet on the silver screen
only to have it ruined by a comic!
you can be sure I will not waste one
penny,or moment seeing it under those conditions.the Hornet I recall was a no nonsense, dark crime fighter with
with a black,sleak rolling arsonel
state of the art hand weapons and
one lethal weapon in the person of kato what is so funny about that

hornet53fan Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

the Green Hornet was and is and always will be a classic.it is as such worthy
of more respect in terms of a movie then is planned with mr.Rogan and co.
the green hornet an kato are no less heroes

Apparently no one has actually looked into what this movie is supposed to be and Seth's comments on his idea for it since HE IS the writer on it along with Evan Goldberg. It is going to be a comical superhero movie playing off of the fact that in the comic Kato (the sidekick) sort of became a bogger deal that the Green Hornet actually did. In this sense (in seeing how this can become a great comical roll) Seth Rogan fits perfectly the role of a Super hero outplayed by his sidekick. He wants to have action in the movie but seeing how he can do so much more with it, that's what he is going for. Sort of a true lives kind of thing. There are already enough full on action hero movies out there (many over done), it's time for someone to take a different approach to it, the Dark Night tipped the ice berg for for new approaches. Research before you go wining about it on the internet.

Seth Rogen is a very poor choice as the lead in The Green Hornet movie. Apparently Rogen is also writing the script, so maybe it was a package deal with Sony.

This casting decision makes as much sense as casting Will Smith to play James West in the “Wild Wild West” movie. Will may be a good actor, but those who remembered the TV series just never bought into a black guy playing James West and the movie tanked.

I think those who remember the Green Hornet TV series won’t buy a curly-haired guy who couldn’t do a push-up as an action hero.

So who should replace Rogen as the Green Hornet lead? My choice is Jon Hamm, currently starring in TV’s “Mad Men” as Don Draper. (see link)

mjones Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

This will be great!!
Of course Bobby Lee (from MAD TV) will play Kato. The Black Beauty (The Green Hornet's Car) will be a souped up 1973 Ford Maverick........

Let's skip to the real thing...

Well, based on the title of this article I'd say it's fairly obvious... SETH ROGEN. The Green Hornet being handled as a spoof would be just plain disrespectful to the character. You're absolutely right about the credibility destruction thing. In the case of Marvel comics charaters, it may be a thing of the past as Marvel is handling most of their own projects now. Unfortunately, characters like the Green Hornet who have faded into obscurity, weak from years of service, and without anyone to defend their integrity, easily fall prey to vultures like Sony and Rogen who come in with their jagged interpretations and butcher them in the moonlight laughing as the blood sprays onto the bricks while the bean counters and corporate henchmen rifle through our aging hero's pockets for a few measly bucks. Can no one save Green Hornet from the slimey, villainous greed that is hollywood? Kato... Where are you?!

DB Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

If it's a serious hero movie, it's ridiculous and will follow the retro Superman embarassment and x-men the last stand in the genre's one step forward, two steps back pattern of self destruction. However, i'm sure it's a campy spoof. I mean it's Seth Rogen. It's going to be Nacho Libre. An out of shape guy in tights fighting crime.Has anyone else noticed that everytime someone rescues this genre, someone comes along and tries to reinvent it, killing it's credibility. Tim Burton brought Batman to prominence and Joel Schumacher chased everyone away. Spiderman and the first two X-MEN movies made it relevant again. Then along came the retro superman, which if I wanted to see Christopher Reeves I would go to the video store, he did it better. And of course X-Men the Last Stand, which was less then good. And who could forget Ang Lee's Hulk, ugh. Now we have solid actors playing Iron Man and the Hulk and a new Batman coming out. So the question is, who is going to kill it this time?

This is ridiculous.
i love Seth Rogan, but he is NOT a good choice for the green hornet.

im upset.

Gee Max... I... I guess I had you figured all wrong. You're a swell guy! Put 'er there pal! :P Thanks for posting that archive that's good stuff.

Odo Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

OK, I'll give him the benefit of a doubt, but I am skeptical about Seth Rogan. I can see him maybe writing the film, but having grown up with the Van Williams Hornet and read many of the comics I just don't know if Rogan can pull this off. Still, maybe he'll surprise us all... and maybe blue monkeys will fly out of my @$$ .

maxwell19596 Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 02:10 AM EST

Well for better or worse Seth is the one who is getting this project green lit. All I can say is I grew up reading the Doc Savage novels only to suffer through one of the worst book to movie adaptions ever. Here is a link to copyright free Green Hornet Old Time Radio Programs enjoy
http://www.archive.org/details/otr_greenhornet
I understand your argument btw, but at this point for your sake I hope Stephen Chow is interested in this project, and would direct. I think it would turn out to be pretty darn good then. Ever see Shaolin soccer? If not
get out there and watch it. Fun, and wild. Good luck HornetSting you are a true fan...

HornetSting Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Yes, absolutely, and writing and casting are pretty darned key in this case. I just don't think that Rogen will be solid as Britt Reid. Plastic surgery is the only option in my opinion, and that seems a bit extreme wouldn't you agree? Would you cast the guy who plays Randy on "My Name Is Earl", Ethan Suplee, as James Bond? I mean even if he trims up, and works out, he still isn't Bond. Seriously, in my mind this is equally as ridiculous. It isn't shallow or superficial, it's just the way it is. Seth Rogen just doesn't possess the "James Bondness" or the "Tony Starkness" or even the "John McClaneness" needed to satisfy this role. I'm sorry if that offends anyone, but he is just the absolute wrong person to play Britt Reid. However, this isn't even the whole issue. Beyond the fact that Rogen will never sell as Britt Reid, if the story is told as a spoof it will be ruined. Starsky and Hutch, so what, not classic characters of the Hornet's caliber. With the Green Hornet you have the grand nephew of the Lone Ranger and a giant chunk of modern hero history that is going to made a fool of. Not to mention this should be done gritty and dark with a deep story. I think this movie should be handled very similarly to the way Batman Begins was handled. That's the tone and flavor this character deserves as well, only even more dramatic. The only time people should laugh during this film is when the corrupt scum that the Hornet is hunting get their just desserts in a slick or violently satisfying way, or possibly from a smart pun or one liner. To bring the story to life, the criminals need to be sophisticated characters, preferably tied to current, relevant organised criminal activities in order to make them seem real. Requiring a vigilante like the Green Hornet to assimilate within the same circles in order to get close enough to capture or eliminate them because they have buried themselves so deep with payoffs and corruption that regular law enforcement can't touch them. You see, unlike Batman, or Tony Stark, The Hornet is a very believable character. He's just a guy who knows the score and is committed to evening it up on his terms, regardless of laws and consequences. The gadgets that he uses were almost science fiction then, but very real today, and this is what makes this such a great story and a possible smash hit in the hands of the right people. Ironman and Batman Begins did well at the box office because of RDJ and Christian Bale there's no doubt about it, but the main reasons I think they did so well, are because the stories aren't so far-fetched and because they were loyal to the story and the fans expectations. In terms of the general audience (non fans), people who normally can't suspend disbelief very readily found it easier to take than something like the X-men or even the Hulk, and that's what makes the Hornet perfect, He's fairly believable. Plus, as we all know, many women, and I said "many" not all, can't be dragged into the cinema to be subjected to action or hero movies normally. Throw in Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Christian Bale, Thomas Jane, or Robert Downey Jr. and it's not such a hard sell. That's all I'm saying. Please Seth, I'm begging you, if you think you can write it, great. Go for it. Please don't star in it. PLEASE!

maxwell19596 Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 04:10 AM EST

ok, this tends to fall under the "video game made from a movie" category. Yeh, 9 times out of 10 the game su@&s but once in a while it's great. I remember the travesty that was, Beverley Hillbillies the movie. The show was great, and had some very funny episodes. Whatever made the show work was certainly lost in the movie. So what do we really know about The Green Hornet? The Green Hornet is a masked fictional crime fighter. Originally created by Fran Striker for an American old-time radio program in the 1930s,In the introduction to the radio show, the announcer proclaimed that the Green Hornet "hunts the biggest of all game ... public enemies who try to destroy our America. The Green Hornet was adapted into two movie serials, and finally what most of us remember ABC brought The Green Hornet to television in 1966-67. Starring Van Williams, and Bruce Lee. So bottom line can any movie producer, and star satisfy some odd preconceived notion someone has of what this film should be?

HornetSting Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Whatever Max. Just wait until they start to destroy everything original you ever loved. Oh that's right, you will have grown up on poorly made remakes and mockery of everything we negativity nerds and our parents ever loved. Enjoy your creatively bereft future. If your boy Seth is so GREAT why doesn't he attempt to create a new character that nobody has ever seen instead of painting by numbers? I mean if their whole issue is that nobody knows who the Green Hornet is anymore anyway, why not just create a new character specifically designed to entertain all the mush-headed, pablum slurpering, 20 something fooktards bent on destroying their ears with sub-bass, and their minds with a lack of anything even remotely original or innovative. Nice try clone.

maxwell19596 Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

Man this one has really brought out you Negativity Nerds. Well, wallow in your odd negative viewpoints on the current state of the film industry, Seth Rogen, and Super hero films in general. When this movie turns out to be, fun, cool, and just plain good remember that you were so0ooo00ooo00oo wrong.

Patricia Lanigan Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Are you serious with Seth?????????????Just took a poll at the office, no-one wants to see him in this role - come on, this is Hollywood, there are so many pretty faces, pick someone else pleeze................

HornetSting Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Nonsense. He could be so passionate that he flogs himself with a barbed whip, drags a 400lb crucifix for miles uphill and nails himself to it, and he would never be Britt Reid. In fact, having said that, I find him more believable as Jesus! The hat and mask would hide alot when he's the Hornet, except for those ridiculous baby teeth and the giant underbite. It just isn't going to work if played straight, and a send-up will only serve to disgrace the legendary action anti-hero duo of Williams and Lee. However Seth, please feel free to do a zany version of Jesus of Nazareth.

j Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

I think he'll do it. if he's passionate enough to write the script, I think he'll pull it off.

J Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Come on people; didn't any of you see 'Undeclared'? He can do it.

Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Seth Rogan is large and in charge...probably a little too large for this though.

Sarah D Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I don't really know what to think on this one. He's not handsome, he's not fit, he's never been truly thoughtful on-screen. With the industry not making the money it once did, why would Sony take such a gamble? Anyone got any theories??

jaded Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Huh? I was interested in this movie until now.

Mb Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

This is the worst news! I remember Van Williams and he was fabulous. Tony Jaa is a great choice for Kato but Seth Rogan yuck! Yet another film I will Not waste Money on. Please stop this before it is too late.

The Soul Kumicho Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

I think people are confusing Green Hornet with Green Lantern. Nobody in this generation even REMEMBERS the actor who played Britt Reid. Seth could be no worse as Britt than Adam West was as Bruce Wayne. I think the big issue is casting Kato. I hope they will be updating the characters

Troy Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Seth Rogen.... I liked him in Freaks and Geeks & 40 Year old Virgin but him as the heroic Green Hornet ?
Yikes.
He's a good comedic actor but playing an action hero in a serious adventure movie just might be a little out of his reach.
Where's the usual guys that would get cast in this role ? The Christian Bales, the Hugh Jackmans or even the
Thomas Janes?
At this point, I'll even pick that guy from "KEEN EDDIE" - Mark Valley or brit Colin Salmon.

HornetSting Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

(sarcasm) Heck why not Seth Green and Bobby Lee. Or Joe Rogan and Cathy Lee? I mean, why not get in with both feet and go all the way retarded? Screw the fans purple if you're gonna screw em right?<

Buffing up and slimming down? I don't care if he has liposuction, a head transplant, and is magically imbued with the spirit of General Patton, they will never be able to convince me that he is Britt Reid. That's gonna have to be some kinda serious voodoo movie magic right there. I can hardly picture him fighting his way out of a Taco Bell, let alone back to back with a skilled martial arts master out of an alley full of armed goons bent on killing him.

Speaking of kicking the crap out of murderous goons… Did anybody watch that short film I linked? The fight scenes are really good. I love the way they have the Hornet using his fists most of the time and how Kato kinda saves his butt in the alley. Nicely done. I'd love to see what Poitrimoult, Lanzi and Vo could do with the cash they are going to flush with the stink that was Seth Rogen's career.

roy Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

Rogen you Idiot!! Don't even think about playing the GH. Have you learned nothing from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as to what EXCELLENT direction and casting is all about. This is the worst casting since Val Kilmer and George Clooney played Batman.
Furthermore as far as Kato goes, the ONLY one who has the ability to play this character is Tony Jaa.

klj Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

What is wrong with Hollywood? Just because a person is in a hit movie does not mean the person should be in every other movie being made. Seth Rogan is a terrible choice for Green Hornet. The Hornet was smooth, cool and attractive. Seth Rogan is none of these things. I guess no one wants any woman to go see this movie. This is making me ill.

the ebuz Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

seth rogen...if u fuk dis up i will fukin kill you!!!!!

Maxpayne Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

Casting and writing with NO regards to the original material destroyed "I Spy", "Wild Wild West" "The Mod Squad" and "Lost in Space". Sure is a shame that no one will EVER revisit those franchises. And NOW Will Smith is set to play Alexander Mundy in "It Takes a Thief"--MORE horrible, short-sighted, self-indulgent casting!!! Smith is a great actor, but he wasn't James West and he sure won't be Al Mundy.

Box office history has shown that taking a favorite TV franchise and trashing it to make a buck just doesn't work. I'm sure when "Hogan's Heroes" hits the big screen, it will be played for laughs and, like "Get Smart", that's the way it should be. But play "Man from UNCLE", "Magnum" or "Time Tunnel" strictly for laughs and I'll be staying home and renting it a month later.
Cheers to Rogen if he plans to play it straight. Jeers if he plays it for laughs.

Janet Vandenabeele Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I'd watch John Goodman as the Green Hornet if he can get Tony Jaa as Kato!! Besides, they'd save money on wires and stuntmen, since Tony Jaa can do ANYTHING! And I wouldn't be disappointed with Stephen Chow, either, but I think it's Tony's time to be recognized for the amazing talent he is.

Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

seth rogen better lose some serious weight and bulk up at least a little bit. besides that i would give him a chance as long as it isn't a comidic movie or else this movie will suck.

HornetSting Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

For those who haven't seen it here is a fairly well done fan film: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4298362767025417950&q=green+hornet&ei=suRGSNrbOJOg4AKeiIGbDA

Maybe change the title from "Green Hornet" to "Green Cannon?"

(those of you who remember the William Conrad series would get this...)

Matthew David Barton Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

This friggin rules. As previously mentioned, his role in F&G was way different than his movie roles.

I just hope in real life he tracks down the plebes posting here against him and delivers some much deserved green justice.

Debsa Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Really? Are you serious?

J Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

And Sony will cast the Kung Fu Panda as Kato!!! LOL.

And inside of Black Beauty being an Imperial sedan -- it will be an oversized SUV -- with roll bars!!! LOL

J Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

The only person worse to cast in the role of Britt Reid would be Rosie O'Donnell. Boy, Sony - you blew it this time!

SoBoredByThis Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Do you think he'll do South Beach Diet or Master Cleanse?

Emoney Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

I would give Rogen a chance -- he wasn't always "funny" on Freaks and Geeks, which was a terrific show, and I think although his persona is goofy, he may well prove capable of doing something serious and good. I am taking a "wait and see" approach.

HornetSting Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Ok first of all, do some research people. The Green Hornet isn't a superhero by the common definition. He doesn't wear a costume short of a trench coat and a simple mask.(The Hornet is a blood relative of the Lone Ranger) Kato is his chauffeur as well as his sidekick and master mechanic. They're just regular guys with no "powers" or abilities outside the humanly possible and some ingenious gadgetry. The Hornet is an anti-hero in that he isn't always on the right side of the law with his tactics, and he usually only hunts mobsters and seemingly untouchable corporate scum in order to expose them. Though similar to Batman in terms of gadgetry and stealth, but also closely compared to a vigilante like Punisher, he is "smooth" and discrete in both costume and manner. Do you see now why Seth Rogen is a poor choice in every conceivable way?

Anna Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

I find Seth very attractive and even I was a little freaked to think of him in a tight suit. It didn't help that EW decided to post the most unflattering image of him! But if he does slim down a bit, I think it could work really well. I love him enough to see it even if there's a spandex-covered paunch involved!

Johnny Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Ceballos- lol!

FM Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

Seth Rogan has actually gone on record saying the movie is going to be played straight, not a spoof, not a comedy.

Give him the benefit of the doubt, he's made good choices so far.

And Freaks & Geeks rocks.

Jakeem2007 Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

If it's done straight, I would have no problem with Seth Rogen headlining the project. After all, Michael Keaton was better known for comedic roles before he did "Batman."
But if it's a sendup a la Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller in the big-screen "Starsky and Hutch," I don't even want to be in the country when it's released!

maxwell19596 Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

Listen up Negativity Nerds Seth Rogen rocks! This will be a great movie, and depending on the director, could be Freak'n AWESOME. Seth will bring an odd sense of realism, to a surrealistic situation. From a creative point of view this has a chance to be something really unique. Seth is slimming down for this role, and talked about the part of Kato, Here Seth will tell you: "I think what's most important about the Kato part is it's someone that you believe can kick the s#!t out of a lot of people. ['Kung Fu Hustle' star] Steven Chow is incredible. That was someone we had talked about. I'm a big Tony Jaa fan also." Thanks Seth. Either choice there is a great one. Steven Chow is a freaking amazing director as well. Seth also addressed the negativity surrounding this film online: "Nerds love complaining. You go Ain't It Cool News, and everybody complains about everything. They could find out Jesus Christ was making a movie with Frank Miller, and they'd say 'That's a terrible combination!"

cd Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 12:54 AM EST

hmm Van Williams vs. Seth Rogan. yeah um no competition. I'm so extremely disappointed.

THINMAN Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

you gotta be kiddin? this guy? I've been dreaming of this for the last 10 years and look what hollyweird pulled out of their ass.And It's schedule for my 54th birthday.omg that's a premier for me to poop on!

Jake Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:09 PM EST

Actors can do serious work you know and I have complete faith in Seth Rogen -- who should have gotten more award recognition for Knocked Up -- the best comedy of last year.

Groening again Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

Hollywood is so unoriginal. Everyone is now getting on the "let's cast the most unlikely person possible" for a superhero. Tobey McGuire & Christian Bale are good. Can't we just leave it at that?

dan jones Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

Oh no, if it's Seth Rogan that means it's a comedy. Why can't Hollywood respect the source material for this? Why do they have to turn it into a joke?

Ceballos Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Oh oh...another superhero movie. I think I just heard Chris Nashawaty punch a wall.
