'Idol' winner David Cook pays homage to Dave Grohl on 'Tonight Show'

Jun 12, 2008, 08:53 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: American Idol, Music, Music Biz, Television

Davidcook052008_l With the contest behind him, American Idol winner David Cook is now paying homage to one of his idols: Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. On this evening's Tonight Show With Jay Leno, after performing his single, "Time of My Life," Cook will play a cover of the Foo Fighters hit "My Hero," one of the band's most beloved songs, which originally appeared on their second release, The Colour and the Shape (the album through which Cook taught himself to play guitar). The exclusive performance is part of the show's Summer Concert Series and will be available online starting at 3:30 a.m.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Cook listed Grohl as one of several rockers on his cowriting wish-list. "The thing I like about him is his music has some substance," Cook said. "He's also kind of realized the absurdity of being a celebrity so he doesn't take himself or any of the extra stuff too seriously. I can only hope to be like that." Cook's full-length debut is scheduled for a November release on RCA Records, the same label that distributes the Foos' albums. No word on whether there's been any official collaboration talks as of yet, but check back for updates.

sam are you David Cook? Jimi Hendrix is extremely talented, Elton John is extremeley talented. David Cook is not extremely talented.

PAF Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

To be honest I think David Cook is quite ordinary in voice and not very talented. I just do not get him. His Analoge Heart CD was never a hit until someone put a hair line creation on his balding head, and crowned him the idol winner for no good reason. The Cook fans were brainwashed by the judges to consider him Amazing. Wake up and realized Cook is awful and is a dreary bore.

Brenda Robertson Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

Listen up everyone, I have noticed by reading all the comments that most of David Cook's fans are considerate and kind toward DA and his fans. For the MOST PART, they don't leave rude and unkind remarks about DA and his fans. On the other hand, David Archuleta's fans FOR THE MOST PART, are condescending. They leave horrible, atrocious, upsetting, horrendous, rude, uncouth, offensive, boorish, disrespectful, obnoxious and
inconsiderate remarks not only about DC, but his fans as well. This tells me something about the kind of fans each David attracts. I think everyone needs to keep their opinions to themselves unless they are kind. If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all. This country needs to have love for each other. We have enough people in the world that hate us as a whole, and it is no wonder why.

Chris Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I heard his independent release.

musiclvr Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

Way to say it Sam...I couldn't have said it any better. I listen to all types of music...Tchaikovsky, rock, jazz, pop, etc. I agree, it is important to keep an open mind and listen to something before judging. If you don't like someones music, it's OK, don't buy it, don't listen to it. BUT hide and watch, DAVID COOK is going to have a long and fruitful career...can't wait for the ride. (Oh, and for the record, I just bought DC's Axium "The Story Thus Far"...it is great...also have downloaded the tracks from "Analog Heart", great also. Check them out on YouTube, DC is a very talented young man.

sam Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

I'm not sure what you mean by "this kind of music." I really doubt that you have heard any of the songs that David Cook has written and performed on his independent recordings. And we are not all youngsters with short attention spans--many of us are music fans with open minds who are willing to listen to new artists wherever we may find them and support them if we enjoy their music. Even the artists that you named had to have a start somewhere. Those of us who are older should not spend all of our time in the past, but be willing to listen to new sounds also. I guarantee you that I will be listening to Cook's Analog Heart, as well as his Axium music more than a year from now and I will also buy his new CD when it comes out, just as I and more than 4 million others bought Daughtry's CD when it came out long after Idol ended. Cook is a very different artist from Chris, but he is extremely talented young man.

Chris Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

I guarantee that none of you people will be listening to both David and Archie a year from now, because real music lovers don't listen to this kind of music. This music is for people with short attention spans.Us real music listeners will be locked in our rooms alone listening to Pink Floyd,Jimi Hendrix,Doors,U2,Pearl Jam,while you people discussing this topic will be surfing the net, dating, hanging with friends, buying clothes,
or doing whatever is popular at the moment.Music like this does not and never will have any staying power. A cute face with nothing really meaningful to say can only go so far.

Heaven Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

I agree with the High School Musical. I think Disney is his bag. After all, he does resemble Mickey Mouse! Especially his ears, not so much the eyes. Mickey's eyes are wide open. He doesn't squint all the time like DA does. Come to think of it, they kind of sound alike too.

Anila Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Pete: If people voted on AI out of sympathy they would have voted sweet little Archie so his dad would not be on his case all the time. People voted for Cook because he is original, because he came up with something amazing every night and he is a GREAT SINGER, yes GREAT SINGER, and you know what I loved his NA rendition, loved it!

meg Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

OMg he sweetness my cuz graduated wit him that is so sweet!!!! Ashly Walker

Brenda Robertson Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

Pete: Get off the National Anthem performance already, Please!!! Tired of reading your comments about that. I went on youtube and listened to David C's performance, also Archie's and Syesha's as well. Archie and Syesha didn't sing loud enough to hear the first 4 or 5 notes. Yes, David was a little flat on the first few notes. But at least he sang them loud enough to hear him sing flat. The other 2 were afraid to sing those first hard to hit notes loud enough for us to hear. AND DAVID ARCHULETA WAS FLAT FLAT FLAT SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE SONG HIMSELF!!! So suck it up loser, no matter how Cook won, the point is he did and your David didn't. GET OVER IT!! It doesn't affect your life either way. Get off the computer and go outside and play with your little friends. They are about your age 8 to 10 right?

lavinialuna Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Umm, Pete, David Cook can sing his butt off. Didn't you hear him during Andrew Llyod Webber week? Sometimes it has more to do with than just the voice, it has to do with style. Style is just something that David Cook has developed, David A. is too young to even know who he really is. I think he will develope it, but now was not his time. He is still ripening.
I voted for Cook and honestly never thought about his brother as a facter. David Cook was just the better performer with a great voice and great style.
Honestly, you sounded a bit like the other bloke you were chiding. Hypocricy is ugly.

Pete Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

Sam, Are you on David Cook's pay roll or are you just so incredibly insecure you have to constantly put down a 17 year old and can't let anyone have an opinion that differs from yours? In case you didn't realize it winning American Idol doesn't make that person the best singer. In fact I'll wager most of Cook's votes were based more on the desire to see him win it for his brother who is struggling with cancer than for any other reason. It's a reality show after all, people aren't just voting on their performances, they are voting for the person whose story touches them the most. This was an incredibly sympathetic back story and the reason he won by 12 million votes. So I'll give credit where credit is due, but does Cook have a great voice? No he doesn't, compared to everyone else, he's more like middle of the road. Doesn't stand out at all vocally, if he did, he would have been discovered already, he's been doing this for a while now.

Pete Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Sam, After David Cook's horrible rendition of the National Anthem I think it's pretty funny that you would say he has a great voice. Tone deaf much? He reminds me a lot of Taylor Hicks, I don't really care for his voice either. I'll bet the "Cougars for Cook" are also members of the Soul Patrol. Sour grapes? Cant' speak for everyone but I certainly don't have sour grapes. I just know a bad voice when I hear it!! I Keep waiting for them to sound better, but sadly the never do. It's always a horribly strained sound and Cook is flat a lot!

Cactus Jack Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

"But David Archuleta is an amazing singer with unparalleled vocal skills whose connection to his audience is magical" This has got to be one of the funniest things that I have ever read. Straight out of bizzaro world.

clayfan4archie Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

To Lintlicker - I agree 100% about DC - he'll be back bartending in no time, maybe Taylor Hicks will give him a job LOL. But David Archuleta is an amazing singer with unparalleled vocal skills whose connection to his audience is magical. He's very handsome, modest, loves his family and has a pure and innocent heart. He is the true AMERICAN IDOL, can't wait for his multi-platinum CD, (I'll bet he outsells Carrie too!)and HSM movie.
For DC, the bar's the limit, for David Archuleta the sky's the limit!!

jake Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

Why is there an argument of which david should have won. THEY BOTH WON because BOTH got signed to record contracts from american idol.

sam Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

People who assume that all 50 something women were for David A are really wrong. 50 somethings love rock, not ballads sung by little boys.

Andy Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

I LOVE when people say, "If such and such happens, then I'm never going to watch Idol ever again." Of course, people continue to keep watching.

I really disliked David C. after his first audition, but he grew on me week by week. Isn't that the kind of thing that's SUPPOSED to happen on AI? David A. was good, but I'm not a 50-something woman nor am I a tween girl so I never liked him that much.

to dancer Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

At least DC REMEMBERS the words he's supposed to sing. DA mumbled his way through multiple songs (I can remember three) where he botched the lyrics. DA is bland...it's like rooting for a Webkinz.

Lint_Licker Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Why all the fighting? Both Cook and Archuleta will be long forgotten in a couple of years (although DCook has a better fighting chance).

To: clayfan4archie Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 05:39 AM EST

15 min? What planet are you from? DC has TALENT. If Archie was any better he would have won Idol, now wouldn't he of? But he didn't. Wanna know why? Because a lot of people didn't like his music. The 18-40 age demographic prefered DC's style of music over Archie's. Archie wasn't innovative on Idol, k, he was lame and boring. Alls he could sing were ballads. DC can sing just about anything. As for Archie being in HSM3, good, that's where he belongs anyways. I would hardly say he can do anything. If you think being on HSM3 is any accomplishment, you're saddly mistaken. Again, the age demographic for Archie ranges from 6-16 year olds. Archie only appeals to the teeny bopper kids. Guys like Archie won't hang around for long, because no one will be interested in his old, recycled pop music, and when people figure out that he can't make any good music, fans will move on to the next teeny bopper singer. You got it twisted, DC will be around for along time, Archie will have his 15 min..

jov Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 01:59 AM EST

Those who hates DC can totally hate him and I don't really care. I think he's an awesome singer.

Chris Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

This is my analogy of David Cook and his talent. Robert Plant is an Imperial Pale Ale,{Harmon Brewery}.
David is a Miller Lite.

sam Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

I think that the High School Musical Movie is exactly where David A belongs. Leave the recording and appearances to Cook and everybody will be happy.

clayfan4archie Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

I'm sure Jay Leno (and the viewing public) would have much rather had David Archuleta in concert - THAT will be a great show when it happens! Also, Archie is in talks to appear in the next High School Musical Movie, there is nothing he can't accomplish! Hope DC is enjoying his 15 minutes, they'll be up before the end of the year.

Jae Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

The Cook haters and detractors are just pathetic losers. This guy is probably the most successful Idol winner since Carrie Underwood. I was and am a Cook supporter and I love seeing him succeed. That success will say F U to his detractors more than anything. He is a great performer. Certainly the right guy took the Idol title.

Jessica Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

If anyone wants to hear/see another version of "My Hero"(this one from Leno) either check out The Tonight Show site or watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC1WPYmpcl8 He sounds amazing and looks like he's having a great time! I can't wait to hear what music he has in store for us!

Cza Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

As much as everything we say - or type - in this post are mere opinions, I can't seem to understand the effort other people do to drop by and say negative things about Cook. It would've been better, and will be very much appreciated, if they provide constructive criticisms. What do people get in bashing and questioning Cook's victory? Does it change the fact that he had won? Are they trying to psyche people not to buy his CDs?

I think it still hadn't sunk in to these people that we (us - whichever you prefer), DC fans, will never give up the fight. It's a choice. And we aren't imposing things. If you hate Cook, then don't buy his CDs, leave his posts to rot if you want, just don't say rude things about him.

sam Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

The orange band was worn for a child with cancer. The songs on the chart (except for one) are no longer available for download, so they can't be on the charts now. Everybody votes more than once on Idol--but the guy won by 12 million votes, so that is a lot of people voting. And Cook is nothing like Taylor Hicks--listen to Cook's independent CD and then judge his talent and marketability. The guy has a great voice and great talent and AI is just the way that we got to know him. Time will tell, but give the guy a chance. I suspect that the critical posts here have either never heard him or are sour grapes by fans of those who lost.

Pete Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

Wildkat, Good lord you voted 908 times it's no freaking wonder he had so many votes. Talk about excessive. I thought he was actually popular but now I realize he's a lot like Taylor Hicks and that soul patrol. A core group that's obsessive but not enough people for really strong album sales. No wonder he's songs already dropped off the chart so quickly.

cookiecrumbles Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Cook says of Grohl, "I can only hope to be like that." Is he for real? This coming from a guy who is pictured with an orange band around his hand performing on a reality show with the goal of becoming an over night pop star. Someone should inform Cook the minute he sold out and went on American Idol he gave up any chance of being being like his idol Grohl. What a crock. Good luck getting Grohl to collaborate on a song that has to appeal to a pop/top 40 main stream audience. It ain't going to happen. Congrats to David for setting another record, most songs to fall off the chart following their debut, also known as a "flash in the pan" or no staying power.

Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

Chris Daughtry hadn't even made it to the top 12 when FUEL approched him with a deal.I also know other musicians were offering their sevices to him before he even had a contract. Now if that's not taking a "TV ROCKER" seriously, then I don't know what is.Let's wait and see if David Cook has the same appeal as Daughtry.I love Daughtry by the way.

dancer Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I guess if you like someone that sings off key then DC is you man-if you want someone who actually sings then DA is your man.

dancer Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I guess if you like someone that sings off key then DC is you man-if you want someone who actually sings then DA is your man.

sam Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

I thought that the national anthem was fine after the first couple of notes. It is a tough song to sing and he had no one to accompany him. After the start, he hit the notes just great. He was by far the best performer on the finals so far.

MaryB Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

David's songs on Leno were great. I was worried because his National Anthem performance was not very good, he sounded tired, nervous and off key/rushed. Good job Cook! I like both Davids, I think they are both genuine/nice/talented guys!

Kristine Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Lennon,Morrison,Cobain,Joplin,Hendrix must be rolling in their grave to see what has become of our beloved Rock n Roll.

TR Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

I just saw his performances.. WOW..

ga-girl Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

David A. sounded the same on every song that he sang. There is no way that kid should have won, as much as the producers wanted him to. Why is still a mystery.

Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 06:23 AM EST

Cheri's right. Advance notice please on this stuff!

sam Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

By the way, although Bo is very talented, he didn't win--he was the runner-up.

sam Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

DC didn't have any choice about singing the AI song, but his performance is fine. It really isn't representative of his own music, though. Analog Heart is brilliant and it is an independent recording, so I can imagine what he will be able to do now. David's writing and performing abilities are excellent--he won because of his talent and his great performances. He received more votes and I believe that he is more marketable (already proven on the Billboard chart). The sour grapes is getting very tiresome--if people voted for somebody else, support that person's CD's and leave DC alone.

JenJen Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

Does anyone else remember Dave Grohl totally dissing "Idol" when Bo Bice won? He said something about how no one would take any "rocker" seriously if they came off a tv show. I think it ended with him saying that he'd never let Bo open for them. David Cook has a lot more mass appeal that Bo ever did, but I don't think that matters of Grohl's opinion of the show hasn't changed. I guess we'll see....but I would not hold my breath for a collaboration.

Nana Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

David A was the real winner who are you kidding

Nana Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

I still think this years 7th season was dull and that the real winner was david A. not David C.like many of fans of A L it was my last time watching to take the win from the real winner david A. is the lowest thing you did

Nan Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

Sounds like some of you don't realize that David is already an excellent songwriter. I've been listening to Analog Heart for 2 months and some of its songs are my new favorites. He wrote most of the songs on Axium's 3 CDs too. I can't wait till David starts performing his own music. But why not collaborate with some of his favorite artists and heroes, if they are willing? Dave Grohl rocks.

michelle Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

If you go to mj's big blog you can see all the videos of DC's performances including the Jay Leno one. It's a cool site!

Kurt Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

He better hope he can get Dave Grohl to write some songs with him, because if keeps getting songwriters to write compositions like this for him to sing, he just about used up his fifteen minutes.

dave Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

Simon you did it again. You just polluted the air with this third rate songwriting.

chris Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

David, your new song is garbage.

Jenn Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

If you missed it, you can access both performances through the tonight show web site. It's part of the Mercedes Benz performance series or some such. (Actually, My Hero was not broadcast and only appears on the website.)

Patricia Weller Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Thanks for this! I'm somewhat in "withdrawal"--having been spoiled by being able to watch DC every week on AI--now I take whatever I can get and I love hearing about how truly he is first an artist and not just a "tabloid whore"--he goes way more deep and I'm truly excited to hear about his influences, etc... please keep David Cook information coming--Thanks again--David Cook fan for life now! P.S. He was Great on Leno and Loved his "Hero" version!

cheri Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Letting me know after the performance does me no good. HOw about some advanced notice so we dont miss things. Why do I subscribe?

nikita Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Hello, I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm a huge fan of American Idol. I don't know if Idol Producers read this board, but I want to denounce that Sony Entertainment Television Channel, which is who airs AI in the whole Latin America, didn't aired the finale of May, 21st. We watch AI Season 7 w/a little delay of 8 days. (That's not the problem). They should have aired the season finale on May, 29th. But they didn't. We are still waiting to know who won, and we never will. (I know b/c I read EW and watch youtube). But I want the Producers to know there are millions of Latin American fans of the show who have been defrauded. The channel didn't make any explanation about the lack of season 7 finale and we are still waiting...

Major Bummer, I missed him on Tonight show. Major Bummer. I LOVE DAVID COOK. I voted 908 times for him on DialIdol.com. I am so happy he won.
Does anyone have the link to his performance of the National Anthem? People.com had it posted, but the video wouldn't load and I tried for 3 days now. Thanks Cookie Lovers!

I just ordered a cool David Cook shirt from www.PantherTees.com. They said not to tell anyone, but here is a 10% discount code, pts10 (it is case sensitive, so copy and paste it). Enjoy!

He was really amazing tonight. Especially on "My Hero". Great to see him relaxed and enjoying himself up on the stage.
Is it November yet?

shantina Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 03:00 AM EST

Two amaaaaaaaazing performances. And very reassuring to hear him rock these. Cook even covers himself! Sure keeps it fresh. And REALLY looking forward to his new stuff. November seems so far away right now!

Cool, can't wait to see his performance! I hope D.C. gets some rest, his voice sounded tired when singing the National Anthem the other night!

Jenna Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:28 PM EST

Thank you for letting us know about the 2nd song! Can't wait to see it. I did start to wonder whether all of these seemingly random Foo Fighters links would lead into a future collaboration, but I guess it's too early to tell? It'll be pretty sweet if something like that did happen.
Also - Yay for confirmation of the album coming out in November! Perfect.

This is great. I hope David does get to write with Grohl, it will be fantastic. Here's a video of David's acoustic rendition of My Hero during his homecoming mini-concert:

This is awesomeness. Cook sang My Hero during his hometown visit during Idol and it was really beautiful. Yay for my two favorite Daves!
