The Passion of the Christ
star Jim Caviezel (pictured) will join Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings) in a remake of the ’60s sci-fi series The Prisoner for AMC that will premiere next year. The network will turn the classic into a six-part miniseries that will feature Caviezel in the title role of Number Six, which was once played by Prisoner creator and writer Patrick McGoohan. McKellen will play Number Two. The original series, which bowed in 1967, told the story of an ex-British government agent who is kidnapped and taken to a mysterious village where his captors try to extract information from him. AMC will adjust the plot to address 21st century issues such as security and surveillance.

I have mixed feelings about this as the original has aged remarkably well with the exception of the bad special f/x and stagey fight sequences. Hopefully they don’t screw this up.

Yeah, I don’t know about this either because the original was such a classic. McGoohan had such control and artistry on the series and his intensity likely can’t be matched. I hope this new version has his blessing and input and does not just rehash the same storylines as before.

Ian McKellan? GREAT! Jim Caviezel? NOT GREAT. Sorry, I don’t want that right-wing schmuck in this… His politics would seem to run counter to very concepts behind McGoohan’s groundbreaking series. The guy’s not even British!!
“The Prisoner” is one classic that really doesn’t need remaking, but if it were to be remade I’d rather see it better hands than this is likely to be. What happened to Chris Nolan’s planned feature film? Now THAT could be great… I’d envision either Christian Bale or Clive Owen as No. 6. Put McKellan in the feature film, not this AMC miniseries.

Great casting – if they have to remake something at least remake it well! Caviezel has that internal intensity that McGoohan had in the series and McKellan… well, he’s just brilliant in everything isn’t he?

I’m so disheartened by this. Jim Caviezel has absolutely no charisma. Everytime I see him in anything I get increasingly annoyed by his droopy expressions and even droopier line readings. I keep wanting to yell “Blink, for pete’s sake!” at the scrren.
And to think they were floating rumors about Christopher Eccleston in the role just a few months ago. What a come-down!

Im excited about this pairing for the Prisoner….I think Jim Caviezel is a very talented actor… all he needs is the opportunity to show that talent and this may be one! Some who may seem to have to bring politics continually into this may soon be suprised at what Jim is capable of…..

Are they gonna kill another British series????? Help me, help me.

I love Jim Caveziel…he’s a great actor and should get more roles. Loved him in the Count of Monte Cristo. And to the person who said that he shouldn’t get roles because of his politics…..um, maybe you should rethink what it means to be FREE to have your own beliefs. Does that mean gay men shouldn’t be allowed to play straight men? Or vice versa?? It shouldn’t matter. The actor being right for the role should matter. And what is right-wing about him? That he’s Catholic???

Jim Caviezel is creepy. I’ll just watch the original Prisoner-this won’t improve on it.

I love Jim Caviezel!!! I always enjoy his projects! He’s hot too!

To Shaun–Jim Caviezel playing a British character is no worse than all the Brits and Aussie that are playing American roles (Christian Bale, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, etc).

The Prisoner is not the kind of series you can remake. I won’t even tune in out of curiosity. Patrick McGoohan was absolutely brilliant and it would be hard to even come close.

I do not like this idea at all. When I first heard they were doing it I was excited (at the time apparently Christopher Eccleston was rumored to play #6). Now that there is an American actor I don’t like in the part, I probably won’t bother watching it. Also not sure how I feel that they are only having one #2. In the series they changed. I love Ian McKellen, but see this as a disaster in the making.

I am a big THE PRISONER fan, but let’s face it, the original series ended in a bumbling MESS. Even the filmmakers admitted they had no clue what they were doing when they started the series. It was a great idea that ended, but it didn’t end well…
THE PRISONER is great material for a remake… the original was great, and there will never be another, but there’s DEFINITELY room for some improvement!
