Bluth family lovers, rejoice! Former Arrested Development costar Jeffrey Tambor has confirmed published reports that a movie version of the Emmy-winning Fox comedy is in the works. “After months of speculation, I think we have finally figured out for sure that we are indeed doing an Arrested Development movie,” Tambor told EW.com at the premiere of Hellboy II on Saturday, the closing night of the L.A. Film Festival. “I am very excited about that. I love that cast and crew and I felt like we had more to say.”

The series, which aired for three seasons, starred Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, and Michael Cera. The single-camera comedy was beloved by critics, but was never a ratings bonanza for Fox, which canceled the show a year after it won the Emmy award for best comedy. Perhaps a significant box office success can bring it back to tv, ala dvd sales reviving Family Guy. A Tobias-phile can dream!

  • Gary

Hopefully they will have their lawyer Bob Loblaw in the movie as well.

  • Tenna

What a fun, sexy time for AD fans! ;)

  • Scott

No one sat at home and watched it for free. Why would they think people will go out and pay to watch it?

  • loligirl

Because Scott while AD was never a ratings winner it has garnered quite a rabid fan base on DVD. Plus throw in the revival of Jason Bateman who is in everything these days and the recent successes of Michael Cera and it might actually get some new fans. I just hope Anne Veal is in it—-her?

  • Tino

Scott – the show gained many more fans through DVD and hulu, gathering a sizable cult following. With what will likely be a modest budget, the movie should do just fine in the theater and on DVD. Plus, who cares – it’s brilliant.

This news makes me very happy! I’ve been hoping for an AD movie since I learned the series was going to be canceled after the 3rd season.

  • rockgolf

Sorry, Bob Loblaw is busy maintaining the Bob Loblaw Law Blog. I expect the plot will be the wedding of George Michael & Mebbe, since it was revealed that Portia Del Rossi’s character was adopted and so they aren’t related.
In real numbers, AD had twice the audience of Sex & The City, and they are 3 times as rabid.
    Ron Howard to direct?

  • Bryan

This was *exactly* the news I needed to hear on this Monday. Precisely what I needed to get through this day.

  • iheartbuster

This is great news! Now all five of us who watched the show will be in the theater! Together! I’ve got my cut-offs ready, I’ve been practicing magic, and I kissed my cousin. I can’t wait to protest this movie. “Arrested Development will arrest your soul!” All those who watch will go straight to hell.

If the show averaged 4 million rabidly crazy obsessed viewers a week, there is an instant 35-40 million dollars right there at the box office. Even if that was the final domestic total, let’s not forget the DVD sales. At 15 bucks a pop you are looking at an easy 50+ million in DVD sales alone from fans of the show. So this is a lucrative idea for Fox in terms of making some sure thing profit. Hopefully Warner Brothers would do the same with Veronica Mars.

  • Julie

    AWESOME! :)

  • Frowny McBeard

Man, I’ll see the movie at least four times in theatres, but it won’t be all the AD it can be unless Carl Weathers is involved.

  • Rahul

    yay!

  • bonash

    BEST NEWS OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!

  • Dee

I know all the fans will go see the movie. “There are dozens of us, dozens!”

  • Sharlin

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No touching!

    I didn’t think anything could make me happy today… I stand corrected… YAY A/D!!!

  • Dianne

This is a no-brainer. COME ON!

  • Verity

This is the best news ever! I’m gonna get a frozen banana and celebrate.

  • dan jones

I always this show was vastly overrated. It wasn’t awful, but I can see why no one really watched it. That being said, I’m absolutely shocked that Fox is pouring their money into a movie version of something people wouldn’t even watch when it was free. I’ve got 10-1 odds right now this thing bombs…. anyone taking?

  • Lolita

This is awesome news!! Bring on the Bluths!!! I love Buster!!

  • DC

Naysayers talking about how this movie won’t make money forget the power of the cult following. A small amount of truely devoted fans will always keep a TV show going longer than a large amount of fickle viewers. That is why love for Arrested Development will be passed down for years to come unlike the OC or something like that.

    never-nudes unite!!!!

not a terrible idea, box office wise.
if juno could make 150 million, i’m sure this could approach that with a holiday ‘09 release during awards season and perhaps ron howard’s name attached as director and a similar “funny and tender” campaign strategy much like juno deftly employed. also consider the way that the family guy DVDs reignited it’s run on TV, perhaps solid DVD sales of AD might propel it on the big screen

At its lowest point– Friday night, against the Olympic opening ceremonies, where the final 4 episodes were lumped together with zero promotion– there were 4 million rabid die hard fans tuning in. All 4 million of those people will be at the movie on opening night, and most of them will go back for second and third viewings. They will buy the DVD. They will buy more DVDs as gifts for their friends.
And that’s not even counting the millions who weren’t tuning in that night– those who didn’t realize it was on, those who discovered it later on DVD and hulu, those who couldn’t find it in its erratic 3rd season scheduling. The myth that “no one” tuned in to this show for free is ridiculous. (You could easily say that “no one” watches The Daily Show if you’re going to discount millions of devoted viewers.)
Plus, the AD movie will benefit from the presence of a certain Michael Cera, he of two of the biggest hits of 2007, with many more on the way– including the AD movie!

  • Lindsay

An awesome idea for the trailer– anything that involves Franklin with “The Final Countdown” playing in the background. Absolutely perfect news on a Monday!!

  • NYCviewer

Still can’t believe this show is off the air. Best show ever. Thanks Fox for getting rid of this and giving us “Skating with celebrities.”
I’d see the movie at least a dozen times.

  • Tiffany

I watch an episode almost every day and they never get old. This news just made my boring work day.
    “Hey hermano”

  • Kate

Yes!!!! This is the best news ever!
