'Idol' winner David Cook pays homage to Dave Grohl on 'Tonight Show'

Davidcook052008_l
With the contest behind him, American Idol winner David Cook is now paying homage to one of his idols: Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. On this evening’s Tonight Show With Jay Leno, after performing his single, “Time of My Life,” Cook will play a cover of the Foo Fighters hit “My Hero,” one of the band’s most beloved songs, which originally appeared on their second release, The Colour and the Shape (the album through which Cook taught himself to play guitar). The exclusive performance is part of the show’s Summer Concert Series and will be available online starting at 3:30 a.m.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Cook listed Grohl as one of several
rockers on his cowriting wish-list. “The thing I like about him is his music has some substance,”
Cook said. “He’s also kind of realized the absurdity of being a celebrity so he doesn’t take himself or any of the extra stuff too seriously. I can only hope to be like that.” Cook’s full-length debut is scheduled for a November release on RCA Records, the same label that distributes the Foos’ albums. No word on whether there’s been any official collaboration talks as of yet, but check back for updates.

This is awesomeness. Cook sang My Hero during his hometown visit during Idol and it was really beautiful. Yay for my two favorite Daves!

This is great. I hope David does get to write with Grohl, it will be fantastic. Here’s a video of David’s acoustic rendition of My Hero during his homecoming mini-concert:

Thank you for letting us know about the 2nd song! Can’t wait to see it. I did start to wonder whether all of these seemingly random Foo Fighters links would lead into a future collaboration, but I guess it’s too early to tell? It’ll be pretty sweet if something like that did happen.
Also – Yay for confirmation of the album coming out in November! Perfect.

Cool, can’t wait to see his performance! I hope D.C. gets some rest, his voice sounded tired when singing the National Anthem the other night!

Major Bummer, I missed him on Tonight show. Major Bummer. I LOVE DAVID COOK. I voted 908 times for him on DialIdol.com. I am so happy he won.
Does anyone have the link to his performance of the National Anthem? People.com had it posted, but the video wouldn’t load and I tried for 3 days now. Thanks Cookie Lovers!

Hello, I’m from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I’m a huge fan of American Idol. I don’t know if Idol Producers read this board, but I want to denounce that Sony Entertainment Television Channel, which is who airs AI in the whole Latin America, didn’t aired the finale of May, 21st. We watch AI Season 7 w/a little delay of 8 days. (That’s not the problem). They should have aired the season finale on May, 29th. But they didn’t. We are still waiting to know who won, and we never will. (I know b/c I read EW and watch youtube). But I want the Producers to know there are millions of Latin American fans of the show who have been defrauded. The channel didn’t make any explanation about the lack of season 7 finale and we are still waiting…

Letting me know after the performance does me no good. HOw about some advanced notice so we dont miss things. Why do I subscribe?

  • Patricia Weller

Thanks for this! I’m somewhat in “withdrawal”–having been spoiled by being able to watch DC every week on AI–now I take whatever I can get and I love hearing about how truly he is first an artist and not just a “tabloid whore”–he goes way more deep and I’m truly excited to hear about his influences, etc… please keep David Cook information coming–Thanks again–David Cook fan for life now! P.S. He was Great on Leno and Loved his “Hero” version!

  • Jenn

If you missed it, you can access both performances through the tonight show web site. It’s part of the Mercedes Benz performance series or some such. (Actually, My Hero was not broadcast and only appears on the website.)

  • chris

David, your new song is garbage.

  • dave

Simon you did it again. You just polluted the air with this third rate songwriting.

  • Kurt

He better hope he can get Dave Grohl to write some songs with him, because if keeps getting songwriters to write compositions like this for him to sing, he just about used up his fifteen minutes.

  • michelle

If you go to mj’s big blog you can see all the videos of DC’s performances including the Jay Leno one. It’s a cool site!

  • Nan

Sounds like some of you don’t realize that David is already an excellent songwriter. I’ve been listening to Analog Heart for 2 months and some of its songs are my new favorites. He wrote most of the songs on Axium’s 3 CDs too. I can’t wait till David starts performing his own music. But why not collaborate with some of his favorite artists and heroes, if they are willing? Dave Grohl rocks.

  • Nana

I still think this years 7th season was dull and that the real winner was david A. not David C.like many of fans of A L it was my last time watching to take the win from the real winner david A. is the lowest thing you did

  • Nana

David A was the real winner who are you kidding

  • JenJen

Does anyone else remember Dave Grohl totally dissing “Idol” when Bo Bice won? He said something about how no one would take any “rocker” seriously if they came off a tv show. I think it ended with him saying that he’d never let Bo open for them. David Cook has a lot more mass appeal that Bo ever did, but I don’t think that matters of Grohl’s opinion of the show hasn’t changed. I guess we’ll see….but I would not hold my breath for a collaboration.

  • sam

DC didn’t have any choice about singing the AI song, but his performance is fine. It really isn’t representative of his own music, though. Analog Heart is brilliant and it is an independent recording, so I can imagine what he will be able to do now. David’s writing and performing abilities are excellent–he won because of his talent and his great performances. He received more votes and I believe that he is more marketable (already proven on the Billboard chart). The sour grapes is getting very tiresome–if people voted for somebody else, support that person’s CD’s and leave DC alone.

  • sam

By the way, although Bo is very talented, he didn’t win–he was the runner-up.

Cheri’s right. Advance notice please on this stuff!
