One day after Grey’s Anatomy’s Katherine Heigl announced that she would drop out of this year’s Emmy race, because “I do not feel I was given the material this season to warrant a nomination,” a key show insider contacted EW.com to express regret that the actress publicly complained about the drama. “The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material?” the insider said. “It’s an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place.”
Heigl made the comments on June 12 after Gold Derby
discovered the star’s name was not on a list of Emmy contenders distributed by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The omission was especially bizarre considering that Heigl won last year’s award for best supporting actress in a drama.
Critics jeered Heigl’s performance early in the season, complaining about the romance between her character, Izzie, and George (T.R. Knight). But the actress shined in Grey’s season finale when her character redeemed herself and her career at Seattle Grace.
This isn’t the first time Heigl has publicly criticized the show that helped to make her a household name. Last year, the actress dropped out of salary renegotiations, reportedly because she felt the studio doesn’t value her as much as it does her cohorts. ABC TV Studio fired back, insisting the Grey’s actress had been offered a substantial raise. Heigl has since received a salary bump.

“The show bent over backyards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material?”
Yeah I can see how that would be difficult!
Can this ungrateful actor go away, please??!! This clearly is a person who thinks they are simply more important than they really are. How arrogant to assume she would even be nominated in the first place. I can’t stand her!
FIRE HER shes an ungrateful diva
I read this yesterday and all I could think of was David Duchovny…enjoy that Oscar, Heigl
She is a good actress and her character is a good one, better than Meredith and she don’t have a real good story for her in the show. I love her scenes with Chandra Wilson
When is ABC going to get rid of this b*tch? She thinks she’s suck the star, where would she be without the writers of Grey’s?
First she publicly criticizes “Knocked Up” for being sexist, now she is going after “Grey’s” Has she never heard you don’t bite the hand that feeds you?
Well the show should stop bending over backwards for her. Any blonde blue eyed bimbo could play her role.
Katherine Heigl isn’t as good as she thinks she is.
She really likes to bite that feeds her. Rude and vile human being she is.
The writers should not write anything for her.
Can the writers drop Izzy down an elevator shaft now?
That is what the Days of Our Lives writers did to Joey Tribiani when he said he wrote all his own lines.
She wants MORE material? That shrieking character of hers gets too much material. She makes the show unwatchable. Get rid of her and I may watch again.
This is all a ploy on her part to get out of her contract. She was very vocal last year about wanting to leave the show to do movies and the network would not let her. I have two words for her: Shelley Long
While I am not completely against her comments; they should have been worded differently but essentially true. She didn’t have the material. So it was good to pull her name but basically trashing the writing staff is not the way to go.
But she has a history of complaining. On the television show (which is still my all time favorite next to MASH), Roswell, she was well known for complaining about story and demanding stuff at the expense of other characters and the story.
She is very talented; but Grey’s Anatomy has allowed her to have a A List movie career. Before, she was getting minor movies. She should be more grateful.
The Izzy character didn’t have squat in comparison to the other fantastic television characters. There is a reason we all hate Izzy and it’s not the actress. Heigl’s right (and still very annoying) yet again.
I was offend by her statement because she made it seem that regardless of her material, she would have received a nod. How selfless of her to think of the academy by taking herself out of the race. If her material and performance was so poor, MAYBE they would not have given her a nod in the first place. How egotistical of her! Of coarse, she knows better than the nomination commitee. I am sure she was not on ANYONE’S short list.
Disrespectful to her fellow cast and writers of the show. If she was a good actress she could made something out of the material she was provided. My thought would be that she admitted that she is not a good actress.
I wish they would just kill her character off. I feel like she just likes to be center of attention and she doesn’t care what kind it is as long as it’s about her. She could have just as easily said I didn’t turn in a performance worthy but no she put it on the writers. LAME!
To Nicole:
If you’re around, totally get your point. But the Emmy field every year always nominates the same people whether they have earned the nomination; so it stands that she may have very well gotten a nomination and she wanted to prevent it so someone else on her show or elsewhere had a chance. But fact remains, every year 95% of the acting field was nominated the year before. I think she was great to take her name out because she felt she didn’t have the material; but she could have worded it differently and therefore made more of a story about it. And it looked like a slap against her very own show.
First I love the idea that she thinks she was a going to get a nomination. Nothing like a public temper tantrum about the material she got this season – she will get attention one way or another. Evidently she has forgotten the idea of an ensemble cast – not everyone gets a major story line all the time. Sorry Katherine you cannot always be the center of attention or get the best material.
I think Grey’s found its voice again this season – especially after the strike. So I say kudos to the writers!!!! I was worried after last season but Grey’s is definitely back.
I really think she needs to move on. Obviously she thinks she is too good for TV and wants to always be the lead actress. So maybe she should consider leaving and going to movies full time or find a show where she can be the star and thus always get “worthy” material.
The material this year was not very good, and I think Katherine Heigl was able to make as much of it as she could. Look back at past seasons, and see how much the quality of the writing has dropped. An actor is only as good as the material they are given- if the writing is odd, hard to understand and just plain silly, then there is no doubt that an actor will complain. She earned her place, and should be able to get the best material possible! No matter how off putting she may be, there is no doubt that she is a talented actress and I look forward to seeing her in future episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and movies.
I cant stand her—someone said it earlier…she complained about how knocked up after it made her a star and now she’s complaining about Greys. Go away…fast.
Funny how she withdrawals her name AFTER she has already won.
her comments about knocked up annoyed me, this just makes me hate her…i would kill for the opportunities she has been given…you think your making a statement turning down awards? why dont you turn down a paycheck, you ungreatfulb itch
I think a classy thing to do would have been (had she) be nominated, to actually attend and use the opportunity to either on the read carpet or had she won acknowledge the writers who are in most cases still suffer the effects of a long strike, the writers who helped make her a household name, the writers who created her character, but no, this actress who once was heralded for her honesty in defense of her friend TR Knight after backstage comments fired at him from Isaiah Washington has now let those kudo’s on her bold move go to her head. This is not her first time saying bad things about GA, (see her cover story with Vanity Fair) and even in her attempts to rectify her comments to VA about bad mouthing her breakout film Knocked Up, she upset fans by telling women what they already know..that a comedy about men and women “may” generalize the roles of them for comedy purposes. DUH Heigl. She let it go to her head and her 15 minutes are nearly up and it’s really no big loss.
Whoever wrote that comment comparing Heigl to Joey Tribiani and dropping him down the elevator shaft, I said the same thing yesterday to my fiance… he just thought I was nuts. I’m glad I’m not alone!
She’s very presumptuous, assuming she was going to be nominated. The show made her a star and a millionaire. I agree, she’s completely ungrateful, and I think the show would be fine without her. She’s probably trying to get kicked off, so she can go on with her movie career.
i like her….she seems nice.
Juliana Marguiles. Nuff said.
She wants off the show, but they won’t her because she made such stink about her contract last year–I say keep her around, demote her to almost recurring or make her character idiotic. she is self-absorbed and arrogant, she needs to be brought down a few pegs. Give the air tim eto Sandra Oh and Ellen P.
Poor, poor Katherine Heigl. First she’s not paid enough for her work on Grey’s Anatomy, and now she isn’t given the material she deserves to get an Emmy? I’ve been a fan of the show since its start and will agree that the writing has declined in quality, but the rest of the cast has done an exceptional job in rising to the challenge – Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers have been exceptionally good this season. If Ms. Heigl really wanted to give a ‘more deserving’ actress a spot that would have gone to her (a little presumptuous, don’t you think?), the classy and graceful thing to do would have been to say something like “I just don’t feel this was my best season”. Remember Katherine, how you said you couldn’t book a Lifetime movie of the week before Grey’s Anatomy came along? Get a little grateful or at least listen to the advice that you gave to Isaiah Washington last year – just don’t speak in public anymore. Period.
