Simon Cowell defends Paula Abdul, mocks 'American Idol' songwriting competition

May 2, 2008, 08:44 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: American Idol, Television, TV Biz

Simoncowell2_l Simon Cowell did not mince words today when asked whether Paula Abdul should have apologized to Jason Castro this week for critiquing his second song before he'd even sung it. "I don't think [an apology] is necessary, to be honest with you," the American Idol judge told reporters while promoting America's Got Talent at NBC's summer season press day in Pasadena. "I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. It was a live show. She made a mistake. He's a grown-up. Look, it's a high class problem. He's singing in front of 25 million people. They're all lucky to be on the show. You've got to put it in perspective. The year it becomes normal is the year I'll probably leave. I genuinely like it when it's a bit loopy."

Cowell did not hide his feelings about the Idol songwriting competition, which last year yielded the oft-mocked "This Is My Now" for winner Jordin Sparks. "I have nothing to do with it — I'd like to bring in the best songwriters in the world," said Cowell, who joked, "You can guarantee either the word 'proud' or 'moment' will be in the song. How about 'I'm Proud to Be in this Moment Now'?" When asked if the final two will get to change up the arrangement to better suit their vocal styles, Cowell hinted at a glimmer of hope: "I won't give it away, but there's a slight change to last year which is going to be an improvement."

Simon's response is not surprising. He never feels he has to appologize fro anything. So I am sure he thinks, why should Paula? Of course, he is down playing the entire thing. AI just wants Paulagate to go away. But it won't. I don't think anyone will listen to the judges the same way again.

Terra Ftelds Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

I,myself do not think that an appoligy was needed. When people do things, they more than likely have a reason for the action.

People have way to much time on their hands... Simons comment are usually dead on.. and Paula always tries to be nice even when giving a bad critique... Now How many of you out there have made mistakes... said the wrong thing... in front of other people...This is LIVE Television.. she made a mistake so get over it....

ToLori Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

When I make mistakes and say the wrong thing in front of people...I say SORRY!

KAREN Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

Thank goodness for Mr. Cowell. Paula is human and like all humans she occassionaly makes a mistake just like the rest of us. No harm no foul.

et tu, Simon? Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Of all the lame cover-ups for Paula-gate, this one is the worst, because Simon should have the intelligence to do better spin job.

Simon, Simon ... abdicating your status to Randy? Jumping on the "tool" train?

How's life among the bottom-feeders, Simon? How does it feel to lie for a living?

Paula exposed her altered state ("I thought you sang twice!" -- what a great judge!), AND let the script slip (exposing AI's dirty little secret), AND screwed Jason over at the same time.

Now say this again with a straight face: "They're all lucky to be on the show"

YOU'RE lucky to be on Fox, since Rupert has the FCC in his back pocket.

Thanks for adding to the degradation. What a champ you are.

/end sarcasm

jolene Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Simon is covering up what happened. It's not that Paula "made a mistake" - her mistake revealed that the judges are judging according to a SCRIPT. she had a card telling her what comments to make. Her mistake was to be on the wrong page of the script - reading comments for a song that hadn't been sung.
The "big deal" is not her mistake. The big deal is that there is a SCRIPT in the first place.

scott Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

Do people who agree it was a "mistake" even know what happened?
Jason had to go ahead and sing after Paula read comments that the performance was bad. How the heck can someone get it together to perform when they know that the judges have their minds made up, and their comments prepared, BEFORE you open your mouth?

SLH Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:42 PM EST

How sad. The last AI judge with some integrity has shown that he, too, is no longer deserving of respect. No matter who you are, when you make a mistake that injures another human being, you apologize. Paula is no better than anyone else. She most certainly does owe Jason Castro an apology for putting him in such a humiliating position.
As for those kids being lucky to be there, without those kids, Mr. Cowell would be without a job. In fact, without us viewers, let's see how much longer he remains employed.
Shame on you, Simon. I thought you had class. I was wrong.

Fed Up With it Already Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:43 PM EST

I don't think Jason needs an apology. Whether she said is presumptuously or not, Paula's right. He needs to get serious or get out. I can't help but think if Michael Johns still would have been there. And seriously, if Jason looked like an ogre and still sang that way, would you vote for him? THINK ABOUT IT!

Still fed Up Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Do y'all want Jason treated like Taylor Hicks if he wins? Is that what y'all want? Just because a person wins the competition doesn't mean they have to like it.

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Jolene: And you know that Paula was reading from a script how? Where is the proof in your accusation? Because I think they made it pretty clear that the judges were taking notes for the performances.

Calgary Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

Jason's been phoning it in for two weeks now. I'm so tired of it. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but I think he's in over his head. He needs to grow as an artist and a public figure. The Elliott-way would be best for him. Stop trying to make him out to be some STAR when he hasn't reached that point yet. Coming on this show is the best thing that ever could have happened to him. He will be eternally grateful for the exposure. But, you can't force people to like him. Some will, and some won't. TPTB may not want him to win, so is that a crime? Randy and Simon may not like his singing style, but is it wrong for them to express an opinion? Get over it people! Do you see Jason crying about it? It's hardly worth a stroke or heart attack. This crap has clouded the stupid show. Paula made a mistake. Freakin'...let...it...go. No apology is needed. No apology will be given. Crying about it will only make you sick. So grow up, be an adult about it like Jason has, and...move...on!

Gertrude Stein Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

So ... when the going gets tough ... Cowell cowers ... and then folds. There's no "there" there, the center will not hold ... AI has jumped the shark ... and it turns out Simon can't swim ... so he's runnin' scared atop the waves ... like the Disney cartoon he once disdained... but has become.

Kari Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

You bet it'd a bog deal. Simon is just trying to cover up one of the biggest blunders to ever occur on the show. One simple sentence was all Paula needed to say on Wednesday. "I am sorry, Jason." Paula makes this all about herself. I use to feel sorry for her; not anymore.

Cheryl Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Paulagate isn't real morons. Obviously Paula would never be able to memorize pre scripted critiques! Do you actually believe she's been able to memorize a script every week up until last Tuesday? Come on! She's just plain loopy.

debi Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

I don't understand why everyone is saying how this "hurt" or "injured" Jason!?--He doesn't act like he knows what's going on half the time in the first place and Paula said right after her mistake that she was reading comments that she had made about David. Jason just shrugged and went on and still left the evening with a boring BLAND performance like all his others.

Sucks to be him. Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

Paula doesn't memorize, she adlibs off the cue cards, while Nigel sticks his arm up her back and makes her mouth work, more or less (sometimes less) in sync. But at least Paula's just a dummy.
Randy can't memorize either, so he just "dawgs" it, and sticks to his limited vocabulary, but he's got some degree of memory-retention, so he's Nigel's primary mouthpiece.
Simon has no excuse. He's not fearful for his job, the way Abdul and Jackson are, and has shown that he is capable of going against Nigel and off-script. But either he has lost his nerve, or wants another expensive new car, or else he can no longer contain his thinly-veiled contempt for the hard-working kids that're making him such a wealthy man.
That's the thing about being a grifter, eh Simon? You transfer your self-loathing to your victims.

details Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

simon's right. paula made a mistake. she read from the script too early. could happen to anyone.

chrisc Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

There was only one mistake made, Paula read one card too many. Nigel told her to throw Jason under the bus and she just did as she was told, she just forgot to stop the reading. One can see from that context how she and the show would never apologize. Very rigged.

Sat, May 3, 2008 at 02:16 AM EST

Gooo Simon for supporting Paula. love him for it

amy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 02:20 AM EST

Paula made a mistake. so what? everyone makes mistakes. the show is rigged? Dont make me laugh! i mean i love Paula, but there is No way she would remmber the lines the producers gave her for each contestant (simon and randy wouldnt either) without using note. and this was the first time ever she used notes.. no,it was just a mistake and she has sufferered enough for it now and can people please move on and leave her alone?

Sophie Sat, May 3, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

The world needs to back off on Paula. Come on, everytime she makes a mistake she pays dearly for it. Leave her alone - she is only human.

Simon 2 Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:09 AM EST

As lies go, that was very karaoke, very Broadway, very Cabaret, very cruise-ship-py, very amateur. This is not the Simon we put into the competition. You struggled as a spin doctor and I think you're going to look back on tonight's lies and go, "I don't know who this person is."

tuningout Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:28 AM EST

I love Paula, but how long are we going to make excuses for her behavior? She at least needs to explain, there is obviously something going on with her. And how DO you explain advance reviews on a song yet to be performed on a supposed live show that is based on those live performances? All the more reason why, Simon, HONESTLY, this show is a total farce. This season pales in comparison talent wise to previous ones, and Paula's obvious impairment coupled with this pathetic attempt to make excuses just really hurts the public opinion of the show. Sick of the slurred words from Paula, the judges stating that this is the best season ever when its clearly the worst, this show has lost its credibility and original intent as far as a lot of us viewers are concerned.

Jo Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:48 AM EST

Finally a word of reason. This thing has been blown so way out of proportion it's absolutely ridiculous. Don't people have anythin better to do?

givemeabreak Sat, May 3, 2008 at 04:26 AM EST

All of this angst over Paula really makes me wonder about some of you people. Any fan of the show who has paid the slightest bit of attention over the years would know that the judges frequently watch the dress rehearsals. It's not a big secret or anything. They all have a live feed of it into their dressing rooms. It's difficult to hear in the studio during the live shows. Paula isn't drunk or drugged, she just gets tongue-tied and her mouth works faster than her brain sometimes. (Or maybe it's the other way around) She saw Jason sing his second song in rehearsal. All the last minute changes to the format rattled her. She panicked a little, wasn't thinking clearly, had both of his songs in her head...you get the picture. She's Paula. And besides, do you honestly think anyone could SCRIPT the critiques that she comes up with every week? People are acting like she drowned a litter of kittens or something. Paulagate?! Puhleaze.

Kathy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:15 AM EST

This is a gut reaction, but my feeling is that the show is losing popularity because it appears too scripted. Who wants to watch a show where they are asked to vote for their favorite, but have the constant feeling that their opinion is being manipulated?
The screwup may have been an honest mistake, but an apology would also have lent a degree of humanity to the show.
David Archuleta for the win!

tickles Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:17 AM EST

I do think the whole thing has been blown out of porportion. But Paula should have at least said.."Sorry, Jason I got mixed up" The "those notes were actually for David Cook" excuse was totally lame. Which ones? The "good to hear your lower range"? or "you
have lost your charm"? Then to turn around and tell David he was terrific?
Poor little Jason seemed totally confused. Even more so than Paula.
2 things I found funny...Simon did not even attempt to stop Paula...he would have let her blabber on and on.
I saw the tiny little smirk on his face! And what I find most suspicious about the whole thing is that in 7 seasons Paula has never (ever!) not prefaced a comment with how pretty or sweet...or nice and adorable someone is. The first time she actually outright pans a performance and it has to be poor little Jason? I mean come on...she said nicer things to Amanda about Carry On My Wayward Son...and that was atrocity at it's finest.

Duh Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:36 AM EST

They always send Simon out to do ultimate damage control. With all the publicity this year that "Simon has a heart", out comes the real Simon....all EGO. I do think he threw the critics a bone by panning the songwriting contest. But, he only seems to be panning it because he would like the finale song to bring him more money. It's nothing about the contestants. No surprise.

Dean Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:43 AM EST

Simon2.....LOL! I'd pay you millions to keep posting on this site. Laahved It!

DB Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

Of course she made a mistake. The question is - what did that mistake reveal? I could ALMOST buy that she just confused Jason's and David Cook's performances, as she said, if she hadn't turned around and said David's was "fantastic". If it had been a poor performance for Jason wouldn't it have been equally poor for David??

Mona Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

What if Jason did a terrible job during dress rehearsal, but stepped it up and did a great job during the performance? Would Paula's critique still apply? This is ridiculous. The contestants should be judged on the performance, not the rehearsal.

dj Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

Are we supposed to just gobble up the excuse that those were notes from the dress rehearsal???Really??? Then what was that "it's for DAvid Cook?" alibi? Why then did she say in an interview that she had to hurry up and make notes because she was taken by surprise when the contenstants were brought out from the stage to be critiqued for their performance? She implied she made the notes right there, during the live performance. And now they're saying it's from the dress rehearsal??! Even that excuse has impropriety written all over it. WTH? Since when has it been right to judge someone based on a performance on a rehearsal? Don't they know the meaning of REHEARSAL??!! Pulleeezzz, AI can't even come up with one decent excuse. That's what happens when their evil deed blow up in their faces. Even all of you who try to justify what Paula and AI did to Jason Castro are despicable. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Jason was panned even before he sang. That was disrespectful, cruel and rude.

c Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Castro--"I'm JarJar Binks. Help me"

Jeff Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

Quick question, how many of you prior posters work for F19 and American Idol. I can pick out most of your posts right away. Hint, don't be the first one or two to respond. The Spin is in!

Laura Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

Paula needs to apologize. Her negative comments were made on a performance she had not fully heard. She was seating and visiting with her guest at dress rehearsal. She said she heard about a minute of the song. Also, Paula apparently was not paying attention during the live show since she did not know he had not sung twice. She's getting paid to pay attention and give fair critiques of the actual performances. Catching a minute of a song while you talk with your guest at a rehearsal and then giving a negative review based upon that is not fair. It would not matter if it had been done to any other contestant, I still would think that an apology would be needed.

Had Paula just apologized right then and there or the next day, this would have blown over sooner. Lying and making excuses are making fans angry.

The judges declared months ago that it would be a David vs David finale. They are trying to make sure that that happens not matter who they have to throw under the bus.

Frank Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Why are the judges allowed to judge on dress rehearsal performance. If that was the case, then Brooke should have been judged on her performance on Andrew L.Weber week where she didn't forget her lyrics and start over. Paula's mistake made it more then clear on who they want off the show and how they want a David vs. David finale. The attitude now from the producers on how great, because of Paula's slip up, that everyone is talking about the show and Simons "No need to apologize to Jason" is sickening. I hope the other networks next season start putting their stronger shows up against A.I. to start knocking the ratings down even further.

Sunny Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

oh, ffs. the only people who care anymore are the scary jason fans. they're so scary they even weird out jason!!!

I Love Jason Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

What has been overlooked in this debacle is that Jason, unlike the remaining 3 contestants, has had no prior stage experience. He sang for an audience a total of 5 times before going on AI, which makes him a true amateur. The others have had vast experience either on tv or recording cd's, which makes them seasoned performers. When Paula panned Jason's performance BEFORE he ever sang, it seriously undermined his confidence because he lacks the experience needed to let it not affect him. He still performed admirably, even tho he'd been seriously ill the week before and was not yet well. This was kept under wraps at HIS request because he didn't want pity votes (unlike Cook's trip to the ER weeks before which made HEADLINES). Jason deserves credit for even remaining onstage after such a hatchet job. HE kept his composure, remained respectful and smiled thru the whole assassination. Jason has dignity, unilke AI where if it weren't for LOW class, there wouldn't be NO class at all.

jayeb Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

this was our first year to watch Idol, and it is because of Jason Castro that we watch.... After all is said and done, we will not watch again.... thanks fox for letting paula abdul make my 8 year old feel like his votes don't matter..

DavidCDavidABrookeJason Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

He should have added that Paula should have said to Brooke that she feels her pain now. ANYWAY - How come I cry every time I read about Brooke's ouster? I know, based on these boards, that seeminly everyone is happy, but I'm in a total Brooke depression....Slezak's Idolatry currently up now - so good. As usual. Love it!! Adam - you're working hard this week, wassup?

stacy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

What is Simon supposed to say, Yes, Paula has messed up the show. Yes, Paula is do drugged she cannot remember someone singing once or twice. Yes, Paula was reading scripted comments. Yes, Paula owes Jason an apology, GET REAL!!. Of course he has to defend her. There is no other option available to him or the producers.

carole Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Even this call from the "so called old love" of Simon's was what is called "DIVERSIONAL TACTICS". Try and create new headlines and hope the press forgets about yesterday's blunder

tanz Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Let's give the producers the benefit of the doubt that it was not scripted and she judged on rehearsal. Well then she is guilty of not paying attention and being so totally out of it on the show that she does not deserve to be paid and judging, if she is not in a sound state of mind to be doing so

dashing4 Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Its hard to believe that grown-ups like Simon and Paula have blinders on when it comes to this incident. Paula lied when she said it was David Cook's notes. We all know that isn't true. She said "I thought you sang twice" which means she either wasn't paying attention or she is crazy. Why pay attention when your reviews are already written out? They should learn from politicians that the public appreciates people who admit their mistakes, apologize for the matter and then everyone moves on. Pretending it didn't happen and the public is the one with the problem is insulting and arrogant. Which pretty much sums up Simon and most likely the producers of AI.

OMG! Simon2 Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

How absolutely BRILLIANT!

dashing4 Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Sunny, you are wrong. If this happened to any of the contestants people would react the same way. It has nothing to do with Jason. Its an ethical issue and integrity issue here. Sorry you can't see that.

Get It Straight Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

Simon Cowell is the lucky one....without the kids who perform on AI, he'd be out of a job. And AI is so far from "high class", it's laughable. Or at least it would be if no one got hurt. As it is, two people were victimized by this: Jason and Brooke. Jason was humiliated needlessly and Brooke got sent home as a result. No way were they gonna send Jason home after what Paula did. You think there's an outcry NOW? Ther'd be total rebellion had that happened, so they sacrificed Brooke instead. It has never been more clear that AI manipulates votes. Jason will go hime this week, regardless of how well or poorly he performs. Mark my words.it doesn't matter what he does cuz he's a marked man.

Get It Straight Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

One more thing: the "High class" way to have handled this debacle would have been to give everyone a pass last week because of the "mixup" and eliminate two this week, as was done last season for IGB. That would have been the fair, honest thing to do IF, in fact, a "mistake" was made. Covering it up only solidifies the idea that something is not quite right in Idolville.

Rita Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Jason doesnt deserve an apology? Excuse me? WTF? did he do to deserve being treted this way... i agree with that guy from Nashville Star who says they 're not treating the contestants right when they are telling them they are going to be bad before they even sing their song! She should've apologized..

penny Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

IT IS NOT THE MISTAKE THAT IS UPSETTING - PEOPLY MAKE MISTAKES AND CAN BE FORGIVEN. IT IS PAULAS BLATANT LYING AFTER SHE MADE HER MISTAKE THAT IS THE MOST UPSETTING,. DONT GIVE A DANG WHO WAS THE NEXT SINGER - PAULA FLAT OUT LIED AND EVERYONE IS FORGETTING THAT

Ann Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Yes, mistakes can easily happend but NO ONE on AI has addressed how she lied afterwards and kept on lying about who her next comment was for. They need to stop enabling Paula before she kills herself with an overdose. The show loves it that she acts like such a fool, it got them ratings. I wouldnt be surprised if they spiked her drink. The ratings are dropping - lets get Paula to do something really stupid like let the voting audience KNOW that we dont care WHO gets thru - we dont even pay attention to them. We have someone write down what we think, lets tell the next guy YOU SUCK BEFORE YOU EVEN SING AND NOT TELL HIM WE ARE SORRY - GLOSS IT OVER AS USUSAL

Sharon Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

Give me a break! Let's take a step back to last year when Chris Richardson was expressing his feeling on the Virginia Tech tragedy and Simon was called out for rolling his eyes at that time, althought the situatiions are extremely different my point is the judgfes are in their own world and not listening to what is going on on stage. They should not be in dress rehearsals because then they don't have ot pay attention to the present. To the producers: take a look at "rockstar", "Dancing With the Satrs" and "Nashville Star" never have I seen comments from the judges on these shows like the ones that come from the mouths of your judges. The judges on the mentioned show are more professional, caring and helpful. They never showcase their latest work (Paula's video), latest star (Leona Lewis) or have mentors who have a upcoming release to plug (Mariah & Neil Diamond), they don't go on a national TV show and talk about the current contestants, who they would sign and who they wouldn't.

Barb Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

How well the person sings doesn't make it O.K. for a judge--of all people--to say something that could sabotage any contestant and give others an advantage over him or her. It was probably not done intentionally and was just typical Paula--loopy. I think AI let Jason know he was safe right off to help stem the tide of criticism, but that isn't enough. Paula should have apoloized, AI should make sure the judges can't see the rehearsals and ensure that the judges can hear the performances. The judges should not be talking throughout the artists performances. The contestants deserve as much. I'm not sure that even these necessary measures will restore the credibility of the show, but they will certainly help.

DAN Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

IF PAULA OR NIGEL OR SIMON COULD JUST COME OUT AND SAY PAULA IS SORRY FOR LYING, NO MATTER WHO THE NEXT PERSON IS, THEN WE COULD GET ON TO THE MATTER OF FORGIVING. AND THE KID NEEDS AN APOLOGY - THEY WERE OBVIOUSLY PREPARED TO TELL HIM HE SUCKED BEFORE HE EVEN OPENED HIS MOUTH - DONT CARE IF NOTES ARE FROM A REHEARSAL THAT PAULA DID NOT ATTEND - THE LIVE SHOW IS THE ONE THAT YOU JUDGE YOU MORONS

Ann Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Yes, the voting public doesnt get to see their rehearsals and neither should the judges. Why even HAVE judges "judge" what a joke. Idol wants who they want anyway and this year has seen proof positive of that. They want the "loudest one" Big notes get votes - that is all they care about - why watch this joke of a show anymore

Sharon Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

continued: (Larry King). This is cometation about the contestants and only the contestants. We are tired of the questions the stupid remarks and basically the judges. If making a small change in the show at the last minute and Paula can't keep up and the rumors are all wrong the she is mentally challenges and shouldn't be judging someone's future.I think Jason deserves an apology if you only human as you say, when someone does something wrong they apology. This will probably be my last year watching unless some drastic chnges are made. I also take offense that the producers think the viewers are so dumb to believe all this hogwash they are trying to feed us.

JaeJae Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

This is NOT really about Jason. It's about how AI does things. It's about a judge not doing her job, dis-respecting the contestants and the audience. Paula did not just " make a mistake." I don't understand why intelligent people are missing the point. And yes, Simon, the judge I respected, just showed himself to be a tool of the machine. But then, he knows where his money comes from.

dan Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

WE FOUND OUT THAT PAULA IS A FOOL AND A LIAR. THE FOOLISHNESS COULD BE KIND OF ENDEARING - THE BLATANT LYING AND NOT APPOLOGIZING IS LIKE THEY THINK THE VIEWING PUBLIC ARE A BUNCH OF MORONS THAT CANT THINK FOR THEMSELVES AS THEY OBVIOUSLY BELIEVE PAULA CANT

ANN Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

TO ERR IS HUMAN TO FORGIVE IS DIVINE - SO PAULA GET ON WITH THE TRUTH APOLOGIZE TO THE NEXT KID AND TO YOUR VIEWING PUBLIC AND THEN I THINK THIS LIKE YOUR AFFAIR WITH COREY CAN BE PUT TO REST. I FEAR THIS WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN UNTIL YOU ADMIT YOU LIED ON TOP OF MAKING A MISTAKE

Judy C Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Perhaps in "Simon World" Paula's gaffe has been 'blown out of porportion', but to the rest of us living in the real world it IS a MAJOR DEAL! We like to think our Idols are all given a fair shake even tho face time on TV and snarky remarks by the judges often manipulate the vote to some degree. But this blatant, pre-song dissing by Paula, obviously from some pre written script from the producers, is unacceptable! We DO deserve an apology and Jason Castro deserves to win by default - even tho he's not the best singer. I honestly feel that the shenanigans last week have disillusioned Jason to the point where he's given up. He knows that no matter how well he does he's gonna get blasted. The person going home should be PAULA ABDUL. In more of a "school yard" phrasing: Paula, you're a big fat GOOBER!

shasny Sat, May 3, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

More needs to change then the closing song. The big deal is Paula made a mistake and still has not owned up to it. All the contestanst deserve respect and at this point Jason Castro is not getting it and all it would take is an apology. The judges are pimping for the one they want to win so why not just stick a red light over their head and let it go from there. The producers must really think that all viewers have no common sense not to see what is in plain sight. I have seen some of the UK Idol shows and Simon is much nicer to his own kind than to America and we are paying him the big bucks which is about $39,999,999.99 too much. Randy needs a dictionary with the limited vocabulary he mutters. I find that the judges let their personal feels play into their judging and if you can't put your personal feelings aside then you shouldn't be judging someone's future.
I hope TPTB read all the comments from fed up viewers and take them to heart, because we control the future of AI.

I am a David Archuleta fan first and foremost (vote for him only) but I like Jason and think he deserves an apology. (And some kind of medal, for performing at all when he knew his song would be panned.) Bad form, Idol!

Osquadprez Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

When stuff like this happens, it adds serious entertainment value to a predictable show. I love it.

You know, Simon is right. In fact, I am lucky to be given the opportunity to read his words of wisdom. If only others were so lucky. Hey Simon....shove it!

billy Bob Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

SFW (so what?) I can't believe so many of you have the kind of life that requires you to get upset at a TV show.I love the show really love Paula...she reminds me of my loopy sister (c'mon we all have one)

To Hmmmmm Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Thanks for the Hmmmmmer. Best I had in years. I am lighting a cigarette as I type.

Pete Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Jason gets an apology every week when he gets his paycheck. That's his job, like it or not he signed up to be on this tv show and he knew before hand that the judges are harsh and Paula is loopy. Why are people complaining any way? This is exactly the kind of loopy behavior from Paula that we anxiously foam at the mouth for every week. So get over it already, no one deserves an apology because everyone got a great big wtf moment from Paula. And Castro got his paycheck. Besides he sucked on both songs anyway. So he totally blew the chance to prove her wrong. I think he should apologize for subjecting us to his weak vocals.

Ad Nauseum Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Hey has anybody heard: Paula made a goof and didn't explain it to everyone's satisfaction. i would like to know if anybody here noticed and what can we do about it. I am so upset that i am going to stop watching the show next month. (I will take me a few weeks to wean off of it). I promise not to watch another episode until at least next fall. Take that Simon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

GingerSnap Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Whether Paula owes Jason a public apology or not, I hope she had the class to apologize to him off-stage. You could just see how that one comment adversely affected his performance. Just because Jason doesn't show it, doesn't mean he didn't feel it when he sang. He seemed lifeless after that comment. How fair is that? I'm so irked by this, that I'm going to do what I can to keep Jason around for awhile by VOTING NONSTOP for him and stick to the arrogant judges on Idol who just don't get him.

melanie Sat, May 3, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

You know, when you ask Simon a direct question, you always get a direct truthful answer. He thinks America (or some of Amaerica) is completely blowing this Paula thing out of the water. I agree. Get off your soap box America, No One is perfect. We all make mistakes. That is what makes us human!!!!

melanie Sat, May 3, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

to Hmmmmmm- you are disgusting and I cant imagine anyone wanting to give you anything let alone a hummmmmmer!!!! Get a life freak

Kathy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

After finding out the truth that the judge's don't even bother to listen to the performances (not only was Paula not listening but I read that Simon never heard the performance either as he was talk to the powers that be about having to critique the songs)...Anyway, after finding out they don't bother to listen or really critque these kids themselves but just read from a script from the producer I will no longer watch this show. I always knew the judge's had their biases etc but it is soooooo blatant and sick this year that this is the end for me. Archulleta sings terribly half the time, off key, off pitch and forgets the lyrics but he can do no wrong and is 'da bomb' but man, everything is wrong with Jason's performance. I have never heard him miss one lyric, he always sings on key and beautifully yet gets panned because he isn't a power singer. Well power singers don't appeal to me. I am praying that Archuletta is voted off before the finale. He doesn't deserve to be in it.

M Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

How about they replace Simon 1 with Simon 2 :P

lk Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

Paula was at reherhsaals and made those notes...I would not be able to perform either if I knew what someone was going to say about me....we all know the judges are prejudiced.....they loved Jason for awhile but after he got sick it has been downhill for him....he would not promote his illness and performs anyway...yet Syesha, Kristi, Ramielle or someone else Ryan made sure we knew they were sick....Micheal Johns was much better than David C and easier on the eyes...putting pros with amateurs is a piece of squat
Jason and/r any other contestant this fiasco happened to deserves an apology ...Randy needs a Thesaurus as well as a dictionary.and yes the mentors are on there to promote their new album.....I love Dolly but you heard her say how long she had waited to be on there...now we know AI is rigged and fake....I watch several of the realithy shows but this is the last year for AI...they crucified Jason and through him under the bus.stripped him of any confidence..

Hhmm.. Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

The best in years, eh? Anytime. We'll just ignore little miss melanie. I think she needs a shot of whiskey and just cut loose for a change.

Diane Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

I vote for Simon2. The sarcasm, oh the sarcasm....laavhed it!

SimonSuxx Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

What an idiot. They all deserve each other. They don't care about the fact that ACTUAL HUMANS are participating and are also at home watching. MOST DEFINITELY there should be an apology. Jason Castro deserves one. The viewers deserve one, too. After this season, I will never watch again. I am finished with FOX.

swede Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Oh my Paulas human!!!Beat her with a wet noodle.

Sue Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

It seems as if Simon Cowell is missing the main point. It is not Jason Castro that is asking for an apology, at least not anywhere that I have seen in the media. It is the viewers of American Idol that deserve an explanation and apology. If AI want to be uncommonly gracious and offer Jason an apology....that would be nice, too.

smancy15 Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

I've got news for you all. every week you all get to see parts of the dress rehersal! They tape it and show parts of it during the broadcast, like for instance during the end of the show when they are showing the clips with the numbers to call, those are from the dress rehersal. So just like the judges, you get to judge every week using the both the live performances and the dress rehersal. Wow, I guess that makes everyone as evil as Paula.

Kathy Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:30 AM EST

I can't decide who needs to get a life more--me, for reading all these stupid posts, or ya'll for getting so tied up in knots over a reality show.

Just saw your latest Idolatry video. To the person that correctly guessed the order in the American Idol Elimination Challenge sponsored by Nestle without changing it, tell me how you could see into the future better than Paula.

Alton Hernandez Sun, May 4, 2008 at 04:46 AM EST

These judges are treating us like idiots.

She's a JUDGE and she LIED in front of us, and didn't have the guts to admit it.

To: Sue Sun, May 4, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

I agree with you, Sue. And, may I add that Simon is a great at deflecting which is why the producers let him talk. The American audience are no fools, however, and he/they underestimate our intelligence.

Sun, May 4, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

show tom & jerry insted of american idol

Jason S. Sun, May 4, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

I believe the show is not scripted 95%. But when there is a popular contestant that they want out before the finale. (ie JAson Castro) the producers write negative comments for Paula to say. They were trying to throw Jason under the bus and Paula messed up because she can't even read notes.

Think about it. Paula is never negative about most contestants. But not only was she negative this time about Jason but she was reading from notes.

It's like when Ashlee Simpson was caught lip syncing. Most times she doesn't lip sync but she did this one time because of voice problems and because the show was live and she messed up.

But even if she wasn't given pre-written notes. SHe made a very serious mistake that harmed Jason's chances of winning. He deserves an apology.

rico Sun, May 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

sheesh...just watch the show.

david cook rocks.

Jason S. Sun, May 4, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

By the way. This isn't the first tiime this has happened this season

There was a much more subtle instance of this before Carly sang Blackbird. Simon didn't know his mic was on and he told Paula. "...all the Beatle songs and she chooses one about a Blackbird."

Then after she sang he almost exactly the same thing in his criticism. SO he had his mind made up before she sang. No matter how good she was(and she was great on that song) his mind was made up.

DB Sun, May 4, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

OK, let's say it was an innocent mistake and she just got mixed up on who her notes were for.  I can see how that could happen. When it was brought to her attention that Jason had only sung once, she said those notes were actually for David (Cook).  THEN...she did a complete turnaround and said David was "fantastic".  Same set of notes, just the wrong performer.  So how does it work that, for Jason, it was a poor performance but, for David, it was fantastic?  Somebody please explain that to me.

Maria Sun, May 4, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Conspiracy theorists have too much free time on their hands...please get off your computers and go do some good for the world. Thank You.

peaches Sun, May 4, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Simon has a franchise to protect so of course he's going to say something like this. Yawn. I think Paula should have had the balls to say "Look I'm sorry. I messed up." or "I was wasted" or "the whole thing is rigged" or whatever. Having Cowell and that big tool Seacrest clean up her mess is totally gutless, IMO.

Li-Li Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

I, too, am sick of all this. As if any of the judges' comments have any merit anyway. They only say things like, "that was good" - "that didn't work for me" - "you're a star!" - "it was like karaoke". How are these comments helpful in any way? Week after week there is no constructive criticism offered, only random comments given with little or no thought. And the contestants appear to be DYING for some sort of meaningful advice. I liked when the "mentors" were given a chance to offer some specific, thoughtful commentary.

Suzy Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Oh, bull. Of course she should apologize. She is getting paid millions of dollars a year for that show not to make flubs like that. Yes, she's human and makes mistakes, but then she should own up to them, at the rate she gets paid. Castro shouldn't have had to perform right after getting his confidence destroyed like that. (And no, he shouldn't have been able to pick up and go on-he's young and shy, and he doesn't have the emotional resources or performing experience to be able to do that-I don't think most of the contestants would be able to give a dazzling performance after such garbage. I fault Cowell too for not prefacing his sneering remarks by stating he understood Jason was a bit thrown off by that overpaid idiot Abdul. No wonder the boy wants to go home-I would too if I were treated so shabbily and in such an inconsiderate fashion.

Abdul should not be a judge if she has no control over what she says-that's the bottom line, not at that rate of pay. APOLOGIZE PAULA.

Suzy Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

What garbage. Of course she should apologize-she's being paid millions a year to judge, she shouldn't be making errors like that (and yes, thanks, I know she's only human). She should know to apologize to Jason (and so should Cowell for not prefacing his sneering remarks on his performance with a comment about her 'mistake'. These people get paid buckets of dough not to make these kinds of errors. Castro had to go on right afterwards with his confidence killed, it's no wonder he didn't do well (and for those of you who think he should have Risen Above It, I remind you that he's a shy young man who has little performing experience-I think most of the contestants would have been shattered by that too.) It's no wonder he wants to go home-I would too if I were being treated so shabbily and in such an inconsiderate fashion. I'd be pretty sick and tired of it all too.

Apologize, Paula-making that kind of dough, these aren't things you should be messing up.

Marie Sun, May 4, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

I don't feel the need for an apology from Paula... but I'd still like an explanation from Nigel.

RisingSun Sun, May 4, 2008 at 09:51 PM EST

I agree, Nigel is the one who needs to step up and tell us why he wrote Paula's card for her. I mean it was way too clear and direct..didn't even start with a compliment. I am so over this all..Simon thinks next year is going to be an improvement..hope he has the viewers to even notice. A simple I'm sorry, we goofed goes a LONG way guys!!

idolfan Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

Didn't they all, including Paula, hear them all at rehearsal? That would easily explain her comments. If not, who really cares? Great snakes, let's not make this worse than the interminable, continuing-ad-nauseum election primary. Good grief!

lea Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

I'm not surprised at Simon's reaction - He's not exactly making small change working on Idol, so he is, sadly, going to protect his cash cow. They are all being very smug and carefree about what happened, putting the focus on being nice to Paula, to deflect attention from the REAL issue. They aren't "getting it" that fans of the show want an explanation as to why the show appears to be fixed.

To Cheryl Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

"Paulagate" is real because people have made it so--you arrogant moron. How do like being called a moron? Can't we at least agree that "moron" is a troll word? Call someone a moron, you're a troll. Everyone is entitled to an opinon w/o having their intelligence called into question. That's a coward's approach and adds nothing to discourse. So Cherly et al, try actually making an argument that shows YOUR intelligence.

sharon s. bowers Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Paula,Simon, and Randy are the American Idol. They each add their own unique personality to the show and I like it. Paula is adorable. I love you Paula

JoeT Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Most of you idiots are clueless!! An apology is NOT warranted!!!! Castro should've been gone weeks ago!!! The fact that he's still in this competition just shows how idiotic the people are who vote!!! Keeping Castro, Archie, and the horrible Syesha in it this long has done nothing but ruin the show for people who have a brain!!!

sante Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

There are three things you cannot take back--The sped arrow-the broken promise-and-the spoken word.
It's Paula's problem and not up to anyone else to tell her what to say. My guess is that she dealt with it behind closed doors with Jason.

WildKAT Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Simon is brutal. He also "has his head up where the sun don't shine". An apology to Jason would have been really classy. His excuses and "Simon Blather" doesn't cut it. The viewing audience now see what many of us "got" years ago. The show is fixed, scripted and has lost it's power to turn out real talent because of the rigged voting system. Children hammer away on speed dial for some mewling little boy (Archuleta) or girl (Jordin) as real talent. It is become a joke now with Paula's blunder. American Idol has truly jumped the shark of credibility and nothing they do to band aid it will stop the hemorrhaging. It's over. A.I. just doesn't know it yet. The kiddies will continue to slaver over talentless hacks while the real singers, Michael Johns, Carly Smithson and David Cook suffer in the process. Archuleta has already been crowned this year's winner. Watch and see.

supermart Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

I still can't believe when people says "Paula made a mistake"... Mistake? SHE SAW THE FUTURE. She made a comment about a song which was never sang before. That is not a MISTAKE. She even didn't realized the guys had just sung ONE song. She lied about mixing comments with David C. And about they listened to them before in a dress rehearsal, I want to repeat this comment from ..."Iris Thu, May 01, 08 at 12:48 AM
I have been to a live dress rehearsal of AI and the judges are not there!!!!!!! The only one from the show that attends is Ryan. I have thought in the past that AI was fixed. Now I really believe it.".... I don't know why, but I absolutely believe to Iris. And I think the judges are not the blame for this, but the producers. They have to apology to Jason and to the viewers. What happened last Tuesday IS A SHAME!

Libby Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

WOW...its amazing that what started out as an incredibly entertaining talent contest has become such a soap opera. The talent stinks and Paula just gets loopier and loopier every year. Its just not as good as it used to be. Frankly, the talent just hasn't been there so they are making up for it in other ways. Paula was reading pre-scripted notes. Its not right. What if the contestant did better in their live performance than in rehearsal? Its hardly fair. But it is what it is and people are going to vote for who they want to. Its a popularity contest not a talent contest. Otherwise, Jordan Sparks and Taylor Hicks would not be wearing titles of American Idols.

Dee Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

Paula really could of apologized that night. After her big goof: Oh I thought you sang twice she could have said - oh I'm sorry Jason - I messed up.

Ada Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

I can't understand why Jason's artistry-or lack thereof--becomes a reason for not apologizing to him for making him perform right after a very negative critique of a song not yet sung! To say "no apology needed because Jason sucks," or whatever critical comment is made of him makes no sense to me. The issue is whether he should receive an apology for having to perform under bizarre circumstances--Paula's "seeing the future." And about these kids being in British "high class" now...well, high class or low class or kindergarten, when an apology is deserved, an apolgy is given in every possible context. Simon is the last person to decide when a hearfelt apology is warranted. I doubt Simon "I hated your performance. Sorry!" has ever said "I'm sorry." His trademark negative judging commentary always involves a sarcastic, defensive "sorry, you loser" moment.

Kip Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

I think the fact that Paula lied and said it was meant for David C was the crucial part of the whole fiasco. And then saying something else later about David C's performance. I will finish watching this season because I am already hooked on these contestants but next year I will think twice about tuning in.

J.J. Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

The coveted 18-34 demographic is ditching this show like rats off the Titanic. They're in serious trouble, and the producers' OBVIOUS tinkering with the show is not helping.

Carrie Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

Simon would not think an apology would be needed in any circumstance.
I saw an interview last year where he said as much, but the issue is not Simon and his narcistic personality. The issue is Paula and how AI just sweep the huge error on live TV under the rug without so much as a real explaintion, or just maybe the truth. But then the show would be over. No one would watch if they knew it was fixed. I do not believe it was at first, but I do think the last 2 years have been. They have been maniplating a David Duel sonce the beginning. Yes Jason should have already been gone , he can sing but not good enough to be in the top 4. He should have left long ago.And then Carly and Michael are out. Anything little David does is the greatest....OMG I hope he does not win this thing , then the AI producers have won ...not the public.

I Love Jason Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

There ma be an upset in the making if Jason's fans have anything to say about it. He has an enormous fan base that covers a wide demographic,a nd they are up in arms about his treatment by the PTB at AI over the last two weeks. They are organized, energized and mobilized to get out the vote for Jason this week...that, coupled with VFTW's efforts may well keep him in the competition much to the chagrin of everyone at AI who so obviously want him gone. Of course, that's providing the votes aren't once again manipulated in favor of AI's wishes...and we all know THAT happens. Just see MJ's premature elimination if there is any doubt.

Hey, JoeT Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Ease up on the exclamation points there, bud, before you hurt yourself. To say that Jason doesn't deserve an apology for Paula's gaffe simply because he should have already been eliminated misses the point entirely. To sit there as a judge and essentially say "It doesn't matter how well you do tonight because I've already made up my mind about you, and I don't like you" is inherently unfair, no matter WHO it happens to. I'm not a huge fan of Jason's, and he basically checked out of this competition weeks ago. But he at least brings something different to the A.I. table. The viewers have (presumably) kept him there. The show needs to RESPECT those viewers - and Jason, because he's earned the devotion of those fans. Yeah, yeah, they want a David/David final, saw that coming a mile away... But Jason doesn't deserve to be treated like a lame-duck contestant in the meantime, until their moustache-twirling plot comes to fruition.

David Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I'm sick of all the Jason bashing. His first Neil Diamond song was actually very well sung but it was dismissed by Paula's gaffe which slammed him for a song he hadn't even sung yet. The whole thing stinks.

Jason I think is tired of being on the show but I'd rather see him stay than either Syesha or David A.

Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

If anything Paula owes Jason an apology not everyone that watched American Idol. IF she did good for her if she did not good for her. This is not news

chris Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

agreed. I actually re-watched "Forever in Blue Jeans" and honestly thought it was the best song of round one. This guy has real talent

maya Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Let's face it. This really isn't about Paula. We've all known for some time, she's either really stupid, or on some serious drugs. This is really about the integrity of AI. Their agenda is to have a David vs David finale (as boring as this will be), and Jason is a threat to that. I for one won't watch a David vs David finale. It will be a snooze fest

Tracey Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

For years a friend tried to get me to watch American Idol, but not interested in the slightest. I finally started watching ocassionally a couple of years ago. This is the first year that I have really been in to the competition. After this incident with Paula and her lack of an apology to Jason, and this comment from Simon defending Paula and saying that the contestants are lucky to be on the show, and in addition, the other commentes that I have seen in the media from the producers of the show, I am back to not wanting to watch the show anymore. I will finish watching this season - only until my favorite goes. This show is only in the business of making money for themselves, and they don't care who they undermine in the process. According to Simon, I guess thay feel they are entitled to do that. Well, I have completely lost respect for the show if they can't respect human dignity. In the future, I will choose to watch shows that exhibit integrity, and American Idol is not one of them.

Joannnah Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

It doesn't matter what Simon thinks. Paula should think that she should apologize. They just don't care. That's the problem. I'd love to see new judges. Keep Seacrest and get new judges.

Leuke Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Wrong, dude. YOU are lucky to be there! I think it's too easy for the big producers and judges to forget who their audience is, and where there money comes from. US. An apology is necessary, for certain. Forcing Jason to perform after that mess was wrong.

Matt Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

In Reality. You need a script. Have you ever tried a live interview. You stuble all over your self and your words. Really Really wrong things could be said if it wasn't scripted. Such as them just blurting out. That F - ing Sucked!! Or something worse. They need to keep them selves in check. I'm sure they have heard every song before the script is writen. Plus I'm sure they take part in what there going to say.

TexFan Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

You know what, if AI has managed to survive other messes in relation to Paula, why are you all spending so much time on this? Who cares if it's scripted, who cares if she's drunk, who cares if she is on meds? Just really, watch the show because you like the contestants (and Simons cutting evaluations) or change the channel. I like hearing the contestants sing, and see how they preform (here's an idea, why don't we talk about how badly all the group songs stink and how badly they move! That is something to judge, because when they come to your town for the concert, that is the stuff you are paying money to see! HA) Anyway, Simon is being Simon, and Paula is being Paula. Maybe next year we can have a big hulla-ba-lue about Randy! I like Idol, and will continue to watch, it's a hoot to see the mess ups! Enjoy the laughs!

Raven Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Paula should have apologized on camera to Jason. And I did not like Simon's comment that they should be grateful just to be there. They are paying their dues to be there. Yes they have a lot to gain but it can't be easy. Paula should be replaced with someone who can pay attention and give an answer that is not a copy of what Randy already said or something we have to strain to try to make sense of. Criticism should be helpful, not humiliating and demoralizing to the singers.

Connie Mon, May 5, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

I missed "the moment," but it's been all over the news so I do know what happened. But I think all this "it's scripted"--"it's rigged" stuff is just nonsense. Jason always sounds the same. His best moment was "Over the Rainbow" (which Simon loved), but whoever said he's now just phoning it in is right. So I can completely understand how Paula could think he sang twice. Sometimes his singing is so weak that he seems to go on forever--and it probably SEEMED like twice. The comments she made about his so-called "second song" were generic enough ("your usual charm") that they could have applied to just about anything Jason sang. THAT'S the mistake.

Yes,it would be difficult to go on and sing again after that, but he could have used it as an opportunity to SHOW them that his second song would be better. Instead, he used the mistake as a self-fulfilling prophecy...and then was rewarded by being the first one called "safe" on Wednesday night. THAT was the moment that shocked me!

Kent Mon, May 5, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

If it was such a non-issue, then why didn't they just admit to seeing the dress rehearsal in the first place? They could have avoided all of the bad press if they would have been honest from the get-go. And they're still not being honest.

Don't you idiots who think there's a "script" think that Paula would not REGULARLY make herself look like an ass if there were a script? Get a grip.

chisi Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

i think there is no need for the judges to apologise, they are always right. i always agree to what they say about the contestants

John Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

When any of the contestants say anything even remotely offensive to King Simon, he gets bent so out of shape, but when any of the judges do or say something offensive to a contestant it's perfectly acceptable and no apology necessary. And speaking of being "lucky" to be in front of 25 million people," Simon should be thanking HIS lucky stars every morning he wakes up.

Marjorie Mccarthy Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

She took notes, yes, but she made them ahead of time and read them at the wrong time. There was supposed be just the one critique at the end so she goofed! Of course she should apologize.

Anna Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I thought this show was already bad enough but the idea that this crud could actually be scripted is frightening. There can't actually be somebody who sits down and writes out lines for the judges like "Yo, I don' know dawg. That was pitchy." "That was very karaoke." and "Your essence of pink butterflies is soaring underwater?" Gah!

k22 Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Paula has said stupid things every week for the past 7 seasons. Tuesday was no exception. Jason survived elimination, what else is there to discuss?!

Linda Mon, May 5, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Simon is correct, its a live show, people need to just grow up and get over it. We are human, we all make mistakes. I can't even imagine the pressure everyone is under, including the judges.

To: Linda from Gemini Mon, May 5, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

The ones who need to grow up are the show's producers and judges. Being adult means being accountable for your actions. They are all acting like children, plugging their fingers in their ears and chanting, "la la la la la". I suppose when you are getting paid millions to work 2 nights a week, arrogance slips in and you start believing Paula..."This is hard!"

el-ahrairah Mon, May 5, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

I don't think that the judges are scripted, although I could definitely believe that Paula is given some major pointers on her Majorly Loopy days. So I will give AI the benefit of that doubt. HOWEVER. I do think that this is being glossed over. Paula herself has given more than one story, and surrogates have provided even more disparate stories. It's silly. First she says she was reading David Cook's notes--immediately turning from "I don't think you want it enough; you've lost your charm" to "You were fantastic"?! Um, I don't think so. Next is the rehearsal story. Equally unconvincing. Then the production confusion story. Were there not such a flurry of effort to explain without explaining and defend without apologizing, Simon might have a point. But I'm sorry, when your mistake directly throws someone under a bus in front of said 25 million people they should feel lucky to be in front of, an apology is most certainly in order if a credible explanation is to be denied us all.

Ms. Pen Mon, May 5, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Paula is a moron, even Simon knows this. He's not going 2 come out & dog Paula, if he still feels it wasn't necessary 2 apologize, so be it, but Paula is still a moron & shouldn't even be on Idol. When Paula made that so-called "mistake" she should have apologized right than & there. The cover-up Ryan tried 2 make on Idol was pathetic. Paula can't even speak right half the time, she can't even be honest w/ her assessment. At least after the contestants are done performing & if they do bad, they'll get 1 sunshine comment, hey 1 out of 3 isn't bad, haha. Her flippin' rambling on & on is pathetic. She knows nothing about music. She watched Jason's rehearsal, took notes & read them off on the live show, but instead she let the cat out of the bag & critiqued 2 of his performances. We're not retarded, we know what she did wrong, them covering up Paula "The Moron" Abdul is making them look foolish, not me. To those, Idol finally admitted the judges watch their rehearsals, I saw it on CNN.

bob TB Mon, May 5, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

you no wat paula is NOT a moron were only human, we make mastakes so give paula a break that sho is pretty confuzing at some points ok

Florida Girl Mon, May 5, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

Absolutely right, Simon! No apology necessary from Paula. Indeed, Jason should apologize to Paula for confusing her & making her look bad. Finally I can tell my mother she's been wrong all these years, no apologies necessary when you make mistakes. Jason is lucky to be on the show. And so is the airhead who is being paid to pay attention but finds it too difficult to count to ... TWO! Fans watch live performances both to see Fantasia's Summertime, as well as Brooke's do-over, NOT to hear critiques on rehearsals we've not seen. Paula's explanation was ridiculous and only confused the issue. I won't be watching any more. It's already been decreed to be a David/David finale, and I couldn't care less!

Vince Mon, May 5, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Simon's an obnoxious brain-damaged smoker. I wouldn't want him defending me!

Tom Mon, May 5, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

The show has ALWAYS been DREADFUL! It should be cancelled at once!

vicki Mon, May 5, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Jason is owed an apology and I cannot believe Simon would say otherwise and sure they are all lucky to be on the show but that does not excuse this wrong doing. Jason is a very well mannered, handsome and talented artist who I feel is the total package where Idol is concerned. Vote for Jason.

Veronica Mon, May 5, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

The show felt rushed. Because they had to cram everyone in and decided to do a critique at the end was so they can fit everything in; however, they obviously had to watch the rehersals so that the judges can write down their general assessment of the performance. Obviously, they saw both songs being performed so Paula was repeating her comments on both songs. Probably she didn't get the memo about not assessing both songs at the same time. If you ask me, she looked totally disoriented. One thing for sure, Jason deserved the bad comments for each song; however, Paula always tries to give good comments even when they suck. Everyone makes mistakes and so I don't think people should continue to make a big deal about this. Sometimes Simon doesn't hear things and often the judges seem to be talking while the performance is going on which makes me wonder that indeed they might always have seen the dress rehersals already. Maybe they should have less guest singers and give a full review.

Maur Mon, May 5, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

It's interesting that Simon Cowell says this in the article; "They're all lucky to be on the show. You've got to put it in perspective. The year it becomes normal is the year I'll probably leave."
Does anyone else see the hypocrisy in this statement? The contestants on AI are lucky? Really Simon? And what does that make you, then? I guess you aren't lucky to be on AI, they are lucky to have you, right? The arrogance of this man is unbelievable! Of course he doesn't believe that Jason Castro deserves an apology, arrogant blow hards don't EVER apologize. Tell me this, what has Simon Cowell ever done artistically in the field of music? He is a money man, plain and simple. Him judging talent is like a mule judging a beauty pageant.

milliemay Mon, May 5, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I don't get why everyone is saying the show is scripted. The producers changed up the show this time & told the judges they would critique after the 2nd song. That means they would have to remember 5 singers singing a total of 10 songs. Paula obviously took notes during rehearsals. Simon has been asked many times on talk shows why is he always messing w/Paula & not paying attention to the singers & he said because he watches them rehearse & knows what they will sound like. No Big Stink Raised Then. Than the producers changed things up at the last minute having the judges speak after the 1st song & threw Paula through a loop. It was a mistake. THE END!

bellaroxanna08 Mon, May 5, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

Some people need to learn a little something about morality and humility. Sure, it's a TV show and yes Paula made a mistake. But honest to God, no person deserves to be told they suck one second before they have to perform in front of 25 million viewers. And then Paula's lame ass excuse of "looking at her notes for David Cook" whom she then told in the next breath was incredible should've raised a few eyebrows. She was probably panicking, (who could blame her), but if she really had based her criticisms off of a dress rehearsal why didn't she just say that? Honestly, the people at AI have a David-David finale pegged and they're getting a little scared that this dreadlocked dude could possibly spoil it. Just to bring it back to the regular conversation, when you tell someone their song sucks before they have a chance to perform it, tell them you were mistaken and you're sorry for saying it and move on. There's a huge difference between constructive and destructive criticism.

Bob Mon, May 5, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

Jason should thank Paula for her mistake, because he would have been off the show last week if it weren't for the huge surge of pity votes.

So Paula was supporting the Lupus foundation this past week, what good have you all been doing but b*tching about Paula on line.

Loser by any other name is still a loser.

Mon, May 5, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

everyone of you ------ get a life!

milliemay Mon, May 5, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

& as far as Paula saying that she was looking at David C's card, that was just part of the loopyness that we love so much about her. & Please, Paula probably apologised to Jason long ago behind closed doors. Lets not forget that shes the nice judge with the heart that usually sees to it that a contestant walks off the stage w/a little bit of dignity even though they may have sounded like a pile of crap. She knows Simon is there to put the stake through their heart so she doesn't feel the need to do it. If U were the 1 standing up on that stage sounding like that pile of crap, U might appreciate that comment about how pretty you look.

OOPS! I spelled Coliseum wrong. Guess Paula's not the only one that makes mistakes, huh?

Leslie Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Jason Castro has a tremendous following. There are millions who love his singing style. He has never reacted without dignity to any comment made by the judges (good or bad). But the real issue here is that American Idol is not what we thought. It is may be live, but it is not real. Jason is real and undeniable, and that is all he offers. Everything else is pre-planned, coached, produced and controlled. Jason represents what it should be, a raw talent tries out and wins the stage opportunity, goes out , grows and becomes a star. All the other contestants are pre-packaged. Paula let the cat out of the bag big time. But some of us knew all along.

Et Tu Simon needs to grow up Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:45 AM EST

I think you kids need to grow up and shut up this backstabbing and moronic behavior. I get very tired of listening to this crap from a bunch of moronic children and especially from the moronic media who will stab anyone in the back for a buck. I can't believe all this attention for a little mistake in reading her notes. How insane. Please stop this insanity now and grow the heck up already.

Denise Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:30 AM EST

Why did you even bother to ask Simon that question? Why not ask Paula?

Omegaman Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

OMG! If Simon is hinting that the winning song is "IN THIS MOMENT" for this year then the real possible scandal begins. The author of this song who has a chance to win out of the 20 finalists, also wrote and sings the theme song to the new FOX TV "UNHITCHED". That song is called Hey!. Check the facts. OMG, conflict of interest or rigged contest on a FCC TV Station? Can anyone say "QUIZ SHOW"???

Bravo, Leslie! Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

VERY astute, cogent commentary! So refreshing on a board of juvenile, illiterate, mewling poseurs. Thank you!

W.Mark.Felt Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Look into the facts surrounding the American Idol Songwriting Contest. This year and last. How did AI get from thousands and thousands of paying entries to 20? Is there anything unusual about some of the 20 this year and last? AI isn't stupid enough to have all 20 ringers. But what about any exceptions? Is this the story that is "the key" that forces the answers to all your questions? Why isn't there any accountability for a paid contest on a FCC licensed TV station?

PS Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

As for our household, this American Family has decided to just turn off American Idol and play board games or cards together. What was fun to watch and participate in...is no longer. When will Americans learn that their VOTES never count..no matter the platform?

SimonSays? Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Hey Simon. I think you all know you're a smart guy. Are the comments abrasive but accurate? Yeah, probably. BUT YOU ARE CLUELESS as to the AI Songwriting Contest. Not your fault, but you are. Check out how they select the 20 finalists. LOL. LOL!

sils Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Unbelievable. I used to like you, Simon. What Paula did was bad in itself, but the way she handled the situation afterwards is even worse. That little mistake also exposed Idol for the manipulative and corrupt "competition" it is. I will continue to watch to support Jason for as long as he remains on the show, but after that you've lost this viewer. As far as tonight's performance, I doubt his actual performance will make a difference, but maybe Jason could get a 10-year-old kid to stand next to him while the judges are doing their critiques. It seems to be the thing to do these days.

FormerIdolFan Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I really hope In This Moment wins. I believe this will finally bring out the truth about how rigged this song contest is. How is Idol going to explain that the winner has already written a song for Fox? Or that half of the songs are written by professionals, some with incredible credentials? Or the fact that all 20 songs were professionally recorded. Where is the NEXT great American songwriter? They can't be found because they don't have the money to record a professional demo, so their songs are simply discarded and 10 bucks wasted.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

Does that mean that IDOL doesn't give back?

AmyB Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

I truly think that if Paula had just apologized for her mix-up, right then and there, this whole "Paula-gate" would be done. Everyone makes mistakes and the only human thing to do is to apologize and move on. At this point, with things so blown out of proportion, anything she does now, is going to look fake and insincere. Trying to cover it up was wrong. If you look at the show from last week, they had never done comments at the end like that. Then when they changed it up again, I can see how someone could get confused. However, when you screw up, you should just apologize and move on.

And Simon's comments about how the contestants are lucky to be there is completely wrong. They deserve to be there! They make the show and pay him his sizeable paycheck. Everyone who is there makes the show what it is. Let's face it, without your favorite contestant, and waiting to hear what Simon has to say, is what makes AI what it is. We love to hate Simon. That's the entire show!

Diane Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Okay, whoever quoted Jason saying "I'm Jar Jar Binks. Help me." and something about the 'soaring of pink butterflies underwater' made me actually think I haven't wasted the past half hour reading all of these. You both made me laugh out loud. That said, I also agree with the many who have said this season is by far the worst talent-wise. It is time to admit it's just pretty damn bad. I don't know why they can't get a third judge who can pay attention for an hour. I have a job that pays a lot less than Paula Abdul's and I have to be able to do it well for more than 60 seconds in a row. I don't know whether it's scripted or not, because one of my favorite posters quoted above made a real good point by wondering who's being paid to write "I don't know dawg. It was pitchy." 47 times a year...at this point in this mind-numbingly mediocre season, all I can say is I can't stand that fake little sniveling-ass kid and if he goes, I guess I can live with it. You guys crack me up.

Get It Straight Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Simon is a pompous arse.

a shame Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

The shame is that there really were good songs that got missed Simon. We heard the ones that AI rejected on songwriter forums everywhere. Some quality stuff that met AI's own stated guidelines that you might have liked. Instead, some AI MKTG fools who have no brains and no memory of the 1950's TV show scandals that changed the nature of paid TV contests, may have prevented you from hearing? That's a question. For two years there haven't been any answers from AI. Maybe the words FCC and interstate commerce and a videotaped deposition will get their attention? And get you some songs next year that you will like?

Deanna Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I think Simon is correct in his critics, maybe sometime could use kinder words but then they would not get the point. But, his coming to Paula's rescue cements my feelings that he really is a genuine fellow.

Tully Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

A mistake made, serious or not, requires an apology. It's common decency. Wouldn't it have been so simple if Paula had explained that she was confused and made a mistake, and now she apologized to Jason. It would have been adequate to make the audience smile knowing already how "confusing" she is and, at the same time, she would redeem herself to Jason as the truly supporting judge. Instead, the producers and Simon arrogantly have chosen to dismiss the incident. What is left with the audience is the perception that they are treated with no respect, and with the contestants is that they deserve no respect.

mariah Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I think Simon said that because he needs to support the team, wheather he agrees or not. if he no support, can be the begining of the end of AI. Inside of him I´m sure he thinks Paula srcrew it all.

To Lori (and others) Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Nobody is faulting Paula just because she made a mistake. The problem is that her honest mistake REVEALS a potentially larger problem: the fact that judges have the ABILITY to critique a performance they ostensibly haven't seen. I think she's human and made an honest mistake. Fine. But I want an explanation as to HOW she was able to critique that song before it was sung. Period. Do I have too much time on my hands? Perhaps. So sue me.

robjacks Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Instead of pointing out everyone else's mistakes, I will point out my own...I made the mistake of watching the show this season, getting hooked, and actually caring about the contestants and what happens next. I also made the mistake of donating to Idol Gives Back and helping the show look so positive when its turning out not to be. I will find something more productive to do 2-3 times a week and not watch next season. I also will make future charitable donations in my name instead of AI's. Won't you join me??

MsDaisy Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

I think Jason owes Paula a big thank you for last week. I think he got a lot of sympathy votes due to what happened. Had Paula not f'd up, then Jason very likely would have rightfully gone home.

scorn Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Ah Simon. I wonder why he doesn't have more to do with the song selection for the songwriting contest, since he obviously makes such a point about and has such an ear for song selection. He certainly couldn't do worse! Maybe next season.

As far as PaulaGate goes, I hope some changes will come about as a result -- more transparency in the judging process, perhaps more humbleness from the producers. I noticed during tonight's show, Paula seemed more coherent and to-the-point than I have ever seen her before. They must have taken her happy pills away. Either that, or they handed out the script for memorization a few days earlier! I also noticed that she was feel-good
Paula again, where the comments to contestants were concerned. The cynic in me says it's all PR... but perhaps the flub-up last week was the wake up call she needed to get her stupid act together before she blows her moment. Based on her recent single, I would say that This is most definitley her now!

Ollie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

I think that Simon has a thing going on for Paula and that is why he has come to her defense. He is a dirty rotten scoundrel who doesn't know how to be faithful to his girlfriend and should be banished from this country back to England! I say let the Brits have him, choke and puke!!!

ya think? Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

We may not like the way Simon delivers his message, but if you boil it down, he mostly right. In life and in dealing with people, the way you present your argument has an effect, no doubt. His opinions are so much more "on" and right than the other two. Take away your emotional reaction and use just the facts. He is right about the Songwriting Contest. But not for the reasons thinks. The contest really does need to be investigated. AI made a very big mistake and is vulnerable to an investigation. If that happens and federal authorities (because its TV and the FCC, the issue is more than just a TV show and a simple contest) ask questions, they won't be limited to just questioning the contest. ;) The opportunity to get all your questions answered is NOW. The time and opportunity will disappear forever in less than a month. Any responsible official who does not act now and ask some reasonable questions NOW is in dereliction of duty.

Annie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

As I read these posts, I wonder why most of you watch Idol. You don't seem to like anything about it. Perhaps your remote controls are broken so you are unable to change the channel. Stop acting like big cry-babies. Whatever happened between Jason and Paula is between the two of them and have nothing to do with you. I like Jason, but the guy picks songs that make him sound awful. He needs to go home and probably will tonight.

Capri Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

Nice job, Simon. The chemistry between Simon, Paula and Randy make the show - Paula's vulnerability and occasional gaffs are a nice accent to Simon's acerbidity and Randy's professional assessments. Paula adds a warm and human touch - which one of us hasn't made an error - especially in the spotlight?

Is American Idol Rigged?
Well If the Paula Abdul "Gaffe" doesn't convince you maybe this will
Did you know American Idol is having a songwriting contest this year?
They also had one last year.
They charged ten dollars per entry and according to american Idol they had over 25.000
entrys last year and thousands this year.
So at ten bucks a pop they made at least $500.000
Last years winner was Scott Krippayne & Jeff Peabody for the song This Is My Now.

I found something about this years songwriting contest you might find interesting.
One of this years top 20 songwriting finalist

Regie Hamm--The Time Of My Life

Regie Hamm and last years American Idol Songwriting Contest Winner Scott Krippayne have Co-written together.
I will say that again because it bears repeating--------------------------------
Regie Hamm and last years American Idol Songwriting Contest Winner Scott Krippayne have Co-written together.

In the search box put in Regie Hamm Scott Krippayne and search by keyword and see what pops up
http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First

Melinda Doolittle was the 3rd place singing finalist in last years American Idol -----over 100,000 people tried out
and in a completely different contest
Scott Krippayne was the winning songwriter in the American Idol songwriting contest last year.
Regie Hamm is one of this years top 20 American Idol songwriting finalist this year.
THE TIME OF MY LIFE – Written by Regie Hamm

Now think about this for a minute.
What are the odds in three different American Idol contests

Regie Hamm Scott Krippayne and Melinda Doolittle all appear on a cd in 2005 called After The Storm

And this is not all there is a lot more,

It's time for this show to end.

second opinion Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:35 AM EST

I wonder how Simon will react when if he gets bashed in front of 25 million ppl. Will he accept it gracefully like Jason did ? Will he expect himself to put out another top notch performance after all ? In one of the shows Brook asked Simon to apologize for something he said to one of the man in band, he did it. This is much more serious here what happened to Paula. Simon had always questioned if Jason is serious about this competition. I'd like to know if the judges are serious about their job as judges.

njblas Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

Come on folks, Jason just admitted his biggest challenge was getting over his dead brain, and he is so bad he can't remember the words to his song, he is not wanting to win bad enough to work for it. I too think he is brain burned and am sooo happy to see him voted off, he should have gone weeks a go.....get over yourself.....

njblas Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

Get over it, Jason just admitted his biggest challenge was getting over his dead brain. CC Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

If I were a judge, I'd have told Castro the same thing, only I'd phrase it a little differently... Sorry Jason, but that sucked.
Simon owes no apology, he's doing his job. And AI is wearing on him. When he leaves, the show will go under. The $$ machine will be no more.

Is that an interstate commerce violation wit
