Nigel Lythgoe on Jeff Archuleta: It's about taking "some pressure away here"

May 13, 2008, 03:56 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: American Idol, Television, TV Biz

Archuletalythgoe_l American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (top right) spoke with EW.com today about the recent reports that Jeff Archuleta (bottom left, with David and mother Lupe), the father of 17-year-old Idol contestant David Archuleta, has been barred from participating in his son's preparations for the show. Here's what Lythgoe had to say:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There have been reports that Jeff Archuleta was banished from backstage, but then David's vocal coach gave a radio interview in which he said that wasn't the case. What light can you shed on this?
NIGEL LYTHGOE: "Banished" is a terrible word, isn't it? It sounds like we're in some far-off kingdom. He has been asked not to participate in the choice of music with David or be in the room when David is working out his routines that he wants to sing. He's fine to be in the studio -- nothing wrong with that. We just want David to be able to be free like everybody else to get on and do what they want to do.

Does that have anything to do with the lyric change during David A.'s performance of "Stand By Me?"
There was a lyric change that happened that was a total misunderstanding. Just another, um, step along the way of us saying, "Okay, this is what we want to happen from now on."

The vocal coach had said Jeff being asked not to participate backstage was more of an issue of fairness, essentially that David Cook and Syesha Mercado don't have anyone helping them out choosing songs or making arrangements.
No, no, no. It has nothing to do with fairness. We just want everyone to have an equal opportunity, and if that's fairness, fine. But this is more of just the fact of let's take some pressure away here, you know? It's like anybody appearing in front of their mom and dad. Let's just open up the pressure cooker, release the pressure, and you just get on and do what you gotta do.

The rap on the father is that he's a bit of a stage dad.
And what is a stage dad, or a stage mom? It's someone who's protective. That's all.

Teenie boopers kept david a in the race. dont get me wrong the two davids are great guys, but cook is outstanding. cook will have a better longer career...archie's style is nice but it seems to vanish quicker in america. people want spunk to their music!

Dave A all the Way! He's a one in a million talent, modest, clean-cut raving talent.

MSanaya Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I find it so incredible that the public assumes the worst of people they don't know but see on TV. I like both david's & both are talented regardless of what your musical style is. Comments like David Cook seems arrogant are so strange as they are automatically assuming something negative about someone who has been humble, courteous, & complimentary to everyone around him on the show. Fellow idol contestants have all raved about how David C has helped them and yet people keep going on about his arrogance. Humility is often mistaken as arrogance. Not everyone expresses themselves outward and puts there emotion on their sleeve for the public to feed off. Some people have composure and self respect which is a sign of maturity- not arrogance. Both Davi's are talented and worthy of success and all this banter about who changed what lyric and who stole a song - is all nonsense & rumor- and everyone buys into it and makes assumptions about contestants they don't and will not never know.

MY,MY WHY THE INCREDIBEL RUDENESS, DAVIS A, IS REALLY TALENTED, HE MAY BE YOUNG, BUT TGE YOUNG GROW UP AND MATURE. HE HAS A FANTASTIC VOICE AND DESERVES TO WIN THE TITLE. CARRIE UNDERWOOD WAS YOUNG AND LOOK AT HER NOW! LEAVE THE BOY ALONE AND YOUR NASTY COMMENTS TO YOURSELF! HE'S GONNA WIN AND SESERVES IT!

I really dislike David A.'s showmanship and singing. He is much too young for this competition and it shows -- he has no breathing technique, cannot move or dance or think for himself when it comes to performing...he may have a decent voice, but it takes more than that to be a performer and have any kind of career. i also wonder if this is what HE wants or what others want to capitolize on from him.

Debby Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

David C will make it only in a band. David A will make it anyway, H is the next American Idol.

junmar Mon, May 19, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

it's really with the judges how to judge the contestant.it does'nt mean that ur not on the top list u are worthed.some dicision were not agreable by popviewers.simply winning is in the eye of the beholder.dream high!

Richard Nair Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:54 AM EST

David Archuleta is no doubt, the outstanding winner 2008. The boy is very good indeed.

Susie Sun, May 18, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I enjoy listening to David A. I believe he's a good kid. A lot of people don't see good kids very often, I mean look at Miley Cyrus, she's squeaky clean and the minute that photo came out people jumped on her so fast to try and bring a good kid down. As for "stage dad" that was labeled by Naomi Judd; if I recall wasn't she a stage mom herself. She was living in Winona's stardom herself. David's family loves him and they are being protective, I think people find that so hard to believe. They will find what they can to get a story, I mean good guys/girls always finish last. In this case we're all rooting that he is crown American Idol. I watch David Cook, and he seeks arrogant, and I wonder if he got permission to change other artist's lyrics. But, when David A. changed lyrics everyone jumped on him. But yet David Cook can change his and make it "orginal" did he get permission? We pray David Archuleta wins!

Mrs. Archuleta Sun, May 18, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

I think David A. has the potential to win. David C., to me, is very forgettable. I enjoy DA's soulful vibe he brings into every song. I really hope he wins, but the chances are higher for DC, so VOTE all ya DA fans!

Bert S Sun, May 18, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

In my opinion, the big difference between the 2 Davids is: David Archuleta has CHARISMA, which David Cook obviously lacks. Because of this CHARISMA, David A will last for a long long time. David Cook will fade into obscurity in a couple of years. Mark my words.

Kathleen Sun, May 18, 2008 at 02:45 AM EST

Nigel:It is unfair what you are doing to DAVID A and his family. You and your judges(PA and DC)are giving DC a free pass to win this competition. You took away the best song(I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing)that was approved for DA to sing and gave it to COOK.DA ended up with the most boring song"longer"and then you allowed your judges to criticize him publically as it was his fault.SC had the nerves giving credits to DC indicating that it was the best song of all time and he has won the night. We could not understand why credits went to DC when he did choose the song himself and did not sing well that night??He was pitchy and sounded awful.Stop pretending that you are trying to do DA a favor! The only reason you banned his dad from the set was because you knew that he would have spoken up and defended his son.You have made this an unfair competition and in the end you will pay for loosing significant amount of viewers like us.DC may win due to your efforts but DA is the only AI in our eyes!

Sam Lim Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

Dear Mr. Nigel Lythgoe,

Please I beg of you to keep American Idol credibility intact if you want the show to last longer. There is so much controversy going on especially with David Archuleta; I hope you are not using him for rating purposes. Remember he is just a contestant and a kid who just have a dream and his Dad is just helping him to make his dream come true; the father always has the best interest at heart of his beloved son and I believe you don't know there family dynamic. And I also hope you are not doing any negative campaign about his father that HE IS A STAGE DAD FROM HELL. Lastly, if you are a father you know what I am talking about. I hope this will reach you.

MORE SUCCESS TO AMERICAN IDOL.

Sincerely,
Sam Lim

Yo Cathy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Well said. Blatantly stupid remarks from people who size people up by what they read or see in a facial expression. If you want to do a character analysis on somebody, try actually sitting down and talking with them first, before making lame comments. DUHHHH!

Cathy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

You guys are a bunch of idiots...what rock star is not a little cocky. He has been in front 7 out of the past 8 weeks...hello! David Cook is the next American Idol. And I called that from top 12.

Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:34 AM EST

David Arculeta is a very good singer. He delivers it with a lot of feeling and emotions, it touches poeples heart, makes poeple feel good! Poeple complains about he only sings ballads, I guess those poeple are not aware that David was called the soul man from Utah. Can David cook sing soul? No he can't! not like David A. The young man is truly a good good good singer. He is my Frank Sinatra. A rocker like David Cook comes and go and there is more rocker to come but you can only find a good singer in one in a million.

eddie Fri, May 16, 2008 at 05:13 AM EST

David Cook has arrogant look. He show it everytime judges gave him praise. Nobody likes aarrogant, but everybody likes humble poeple and that's David Archuleta.Even Simon told him that and also he has no whatsoever any charisma. His hair, his beard looks so untidy. Thats one of the reason I never like him from the very beggining of the show and the time that the two judges praise him he really thinks he was all that and Simon Cowell slap him with reality by telling him that. That was the earliest part of the season.

barbie Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

David C. has a great voice, but his attitude and arrogance stops us from voting for him... bye bye DC hello DA

CC Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

'And WOW, DA was SOOOOO different singing, since his father has been put in his place.'
Puleeeeese!
He looked and sounded as he always did. Predictable and saccarine.

CAROL Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

DAVID A IS A DREAM, A GOOD CLEAN CUT LOOKING YOUNG MAN. HE IS SWEET, HE IS AN ANGEL, AND SINGS LIKE ONE AS WELL. WHO SAID THAT NICE GUYS FINISH LAST..DAVID A, LOOKS LIKE AN AMERICAN IDOL BEHAVES LIKE ONE AND WILL BE ONE! WOW WHAT A CHANGE? A REAL, FRESH.. BREATH OF AIR... HOW UNIQUE. GO ARCHIE. WE LOVE YOU.

Jeffrey Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Hey, it may be me, but it seemed to me that David A. sang more convincingly and soulfully on "And So It Goes" that he ever had before; I expected him to crumble without his father's assistance, but it looked like the opposite.

Pathetic Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

It's amazingly stupid how people read into things that aren't there. If David C. raises his eyebrow or worse yet, furrows it, he's branded with a character flaw. If David A. comes out 'smiling' that means his dad has been laying off him. You people should get jobs at the TMZ or Star magazine, or maybe join the Spock Mind-melding fan club. Your character assessments are ridiculous.
I pity these poor guys for having to be constantly scrutinized by you.

Cat Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

I 100% agree with the producers. I'm not an Archuletta fan, but this week the kid sounded and looked a lot more happiers, and really looked like for the first time in the entire competition that he was enjoying himself. There was a different aura coming from him. I also agree that it makes the competition more fair because if David wants to be in this industry he's got to prove him can just like all the other contestants.

jane Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

we should be thankful that at least nigel lythgoe explained what had really happened...to people who are saying negative, offensive things about the young boy David, please stop it! he is just 17...if david cook wins then let it be and if david archuleta wins then it's God's will.

re: Daddy Dearest Wed, May 14 06:26 PM EST
I think once the Idol producers decided Cook would make the better Idol, they started to tighten the reins on Jeff Archuleta. They knew Little David would tremble and whimper onstage without Daddy Dearest calling the shots for him.
- - - -
While I don't disagree that Cook will be a little better at selling songs (they missed the boat with Daughtry), but Arch is what? Just 17. Cook was a bartender and little more savvy.

Evelyn Wed, May 14, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

Unfair to do this to David Archuleta at this stage of the competition. I think it is totally unfair and may change my feeling for even being an American Idol fan. David Archuleta is my American Idol this year. American Idol should rethink this move at this stage of the competition. Get real.

Archieeeee Wed, May 14, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

Archuleta is the best singer..
Cook looks arrogant he thinks he is the best..
but Archie is better than him. sorry
but it's my opinion...

Cook will do the AI franchise proud with his marketability, his excellent speaking skills, and his killer vocals. If I were an AI producer, I'd promote the heck out of Cook, too. It makes good business sense, and this is, after all, show BUSINESS.

re: Betty Wed, May 14, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST - I think Syesha should win the title...
----
Syesha is a ham, with limited range and limited singing talent, she does have stage presence though. I see her doing 7 shows a day at "Six Flags" for the next five years before her 15 minutes of fame is up. The boys are much better singers & musicians with better vocal ranges and musical skillsets. I could care less who wins.

GET YOUR HAIRCUT!

Betty Wed, May 14, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I think Syesha should win the title, she's better than the the others & if she doesn't win, will be another Clay Aiken & be more popular & sell mkore records than whoever does win

Stephanie T. Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

No, no, no. It has nothing to do with fairness. We just want everyone to have an equal opportunity, and if that's fairness, fine.

It IS called "fairness". An Englishman does not know what that word means? Oi.

Alex Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

bootsie

Clive Davis is a genius and run out by music business no nothings who are running the label into the ground. Even Kelly admitted the Clive was right about the last CD and she was wrong. You were right about not being dropped...but not about the Clive/Kelly or why he is out. If you notice the only hits that label had in the last 3 years were from Clive's sub label.

bootsie Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson was NOT about to be dropped by her label, she just had artistic differences with Clive Davis. Who is no longer in that position. Her concert tour w/Reba got good reviews and was mostly sold out, as was her Australian and British tour. She wasn't a predetermined winner, but she prevailed over the two favorites and has worked her butt off ever since, always trying to improve as an artist. Try to get your facts straight instead of just trying to make them fit your argument.

jersey boy rob Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Archie has finally showed what's he made of, and it's not much. He can sing all the cheesy ballads he wants, but put a real power vocal song in there and he'll show his limitations. I think the name of his first album should be called "Lullabyes and Insomnia Cures." As good as his voice is, there's only so many ballads I can deal with. Sorry Archie, you're gonna need Betty and Veronica's shoulders to cry on.
Syesha will probably go home, but she's already stamped herself as a performer and has a great future ahead of her, particularly on Broadway. Plus the fact that she is absolutely gorgeous.
Which brings us to Cook, and man can he cook! He should win this thing, because he's the most daring and original one there. This is a superstar in the making, and he'll sell records like Daughtry does. A rocker will finally win, or should.

John Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

To Not an AI Fan:

Who are the folks that take this way too seriously? Sounds like you are one of 'em.

I love watching the AI bashers - often they are more fanatical about the show than most of the rest of us. I didn't even tune in last night.

Sites like VotefortheWorst are really just AI-focused sites. They pump the popularity of the show in much the same way that folks who hated Howard Stern amped his ratings way back when.

So keep on hating - it's obvious to even the casual observer that you're more hooked than most of the rest of us. Maybe you even tried out and got panned - not even on the bad tryout tape or anything - just three "No"s and you run back to your keyboard in tears to write your next scathing comment.

GG fanboi ;)

WildKAT Wed, May 14, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Waaay too late, Nigel Lithgoe. Your SPIN IS TOTAL CRAP. You are lying to cover your butt and we know it. David Archuleta CHEATED. He should have been KICKED from the show. He was told by your staff to NOT change lyrics and yet with full awareness he performed the altered song. By allowing him to continue here is YOUR MESSAGE TO AMERICAN TEENS: It is perfectly OK to cheat in order to win because YOU do. After hearing of your announcement on BBC nearly TWO WEEKS BEFORE the finale of Bo Bice/Carrie Underwood contest that she would win, we posted it and the Bo Bice fan Board crashed. A.I. is rigged. We know you pick the "winners" regardless of the American voters. You WILL make sure Archuleta wins no matter that he lacks star potential, is boring and without stage presence, slobbers all over himself, can't remember lyrics and can't even speak a full sentence when asked one. American Idol has become a TOTAL JOKE. You want to change things, then GET HONEST. WE are NOT FOOLED any more.

Chris Wed, May 14, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

David Archuleta is so fake!!! He should never win!!!

Not an AI fan Wed, May 14, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

@kevin:
I'll give you Carrie Underwood, yes. I won't deny that a show like AI can help bring forth a really talented person to the mainstream who might not have otherwise made it as big without help.

Clarkson's last effort hasn't done well, and she was almost dropped from her label before "My December" even came out. Daughtry wouldn't be as much of a success without AI either, and I think there's a lot of people who'd BLAME the show for that than praise it. Does the industry need another rock/grunge band clone? Is it any surprise that AI is trying to pimp David C as a winner? Just listen to the judges comments to David A and Syesha last night. They trashed them to try to sway viewer voting. Why? So when David C. wins, AI controls his record deals and they can cash in where they couldn't because Daughtry was not the official winner, and instead worked with a different label. Rock/grunge is easily marketable and easy money. That's what it comes to and why David A. can't win.

kevin Wed, May 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

To Not an AI Fan:

You may be right that there have been winners dropped by their labels, but certainly not Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, Carrie being the all time winner and don't forget about Daughtry, ok so out of 7 seasons we came up with 3 real winners. Fantasia, Taylor Hicks and the guy that won over Clay Aiken, can't remember his name, I agree they probably have been been dropped by their labels because they're downright awful, esp Hicks, he was a loser from the getgo

Chris Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

David Cook is the new American Idol!!!

Not an AI fan Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

And you people who loved Carly Smithson? Were you one of the ~400 people who bought her first album released around 9/11? Did you support her by purchasing it after you found out she'd already had her chance in the music industry as Carly Hennesey? She was a massive failure back then, and rightfully deserved the boot from the show. She'd already had her chance, but because she had a personal working relationship with Randy Jackson, she got a second chance. And she bombed.

Not an AI fan Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

You people take this show waaay too seriously. From Season 1, the show's been rigged to finding the people with a story to sell to the TV-watching masses. At least that gives them a semblance of personality (because we all know they failed in that area this season). The show really should be called Karaoke Popularity Contest. There's nothing redeeming about the show. What the people go through week-to-week just to prepare to be on TV and sing a song that's been done better, usually the original artists, with only a fraction of their talent is also unjustifiable. But I guess it doesn't matter - they signed the contracts just for a 15 minute window of fame. Previous AI winners have all been dropped by their labels, all forgotten by you, their once faithful viewers/fans when the next season comes along. Nevermind that everyone seems to have already forgotten about Paula's mistake last week, proving how fake the show is. And there's been plenty of evidence before that, too.

minime Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I think that it's a GREAT idea banning Jeff Archuleta from David's practices and choosing his music. Jeff has been known in the past to be disruptive and a problem causer (not just being overprotective). I feel that it hurts David's character when he does this. I feel for the kid. David has a great future ahead of him...if his father doesn't blow it for him. His voice is angelic and he is WHERE HE SHOULD BE....AN AMERICAN IDOL!!!! David also needs to know that he can do this on his own. That will give him the confidence and strength he needs to persevere in the music industry because he is so young. DAVID ARCHULETA has my vote for the next AMERICAN IDOL!!!!

Babs Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

To K
you think david A. has a great stage appearance and is sexy . The kid looks like a robot with no brain. He looks so uncomfortable on stage I have to change the channel whenever he sings. He can't answer questions and isn't poised at all. I stopped watching when I realized the two David were already picked by producers to be in the final. David A. messes up lyrics and the judges tell him how great he is even Simon Kissed up to producers . I will not watch AI again

missy Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

David Cook is the better choice for American Idol. He's more well rounded & he's more mature. I really don't care who wins. Both Davids will do well no matter what happens.

carol Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

David A. doesn't have the "star" potential just yet. David Cook would be the best "money maker" right now and David A. is more suited for a "theme park" job.

bootsy Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

All contestants under the age of 18 have had their parents close by the entire time. This is no different.

Victoria Williams Wed, May 14, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

As a mother I see a scared lttle boy bullied by his father for perfection. Keeping him away from his son a great idea. You can see the fear on David's face.

Rudy Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

David A....he is very boring in my opinion and should have been booted along time ago...he really ISN'T that good a singer at all....just appealing to the tweenies and their mommy's....

Karen Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Robin, I really wish you had stayed away. David Cook is not smug-he's confident in his own abilities. Big difference. He may not be ground-breaking, but he is certainly more original than the rest of the contestants this season. And quit kidding yourself that this is purely a singing contest. Even if it were, Archie has dropped so many lyrics that he should have been booted for that long ago. And he proved last night that he doesn't have a contemporary sining bone in his body.

Rudy Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

If this show was really based on singing talent...the last two standing should be David Cook and Carly..but the sad thing as we have seen, it is NOT about their singing talent...I have about had it with this show....

CAP Wed, May 14, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

After last nights show I am positive it is going to be a "David" showdown! My favorite is David A., however, David C. is great as well! I have to say, personally, I would not be unhappy if either won! No matter about David A's Dad or whatever else happens I believe David A. is going to do well! I can't believe that Nick said the best of the two singers, Clay and Ruben, was Ruben.....going back in time now! Clay is sooooooo much more talented than Ruben...it is so outrageous that Ruben won that year! Clay is the best and has the best voice of any past or future AI contestant! Yes, I am a huge Clay Aiken fan and snatched his latest CD up the day it came out...anyway, look for the two David's in the showdown! Also, I will buy David A's CD when he makes one!

T-Wil Wed, May 14, 2008 at 07:36 AM EST

The fact of the matter is that people are saying the boy's father has him in tears all the pressure and what not, the kid is a one trick pony though like someone said, he is terribly boring, he messed up the Chris Brown lyrics last night too. He reminds me of Clay Aiken...a one trick pony, at the end of the day nobody will be rushing to buy his records and if he comes on the radio nobody will be dying to hear him, now Cook is another story, the boy had Talent, Syesha killed herself with fever last night so I am not even pressed about her.

David Cook is not qualified to shine Chris Daughtry's shoes, let alone stand in them! ARCHULETA ALL THE WAY, at least HE can actually sing (screaming does not = singing)

American Idol has become stale. It never really became the show I thought it would be which in my mind was to find the next Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears. I've hated just about every winner and everyone I did think had potential got voted off way too early. I personally don't see the appeal in David C..he has a really big head too! He looks like a giant in comparison to Ryan Seacrest. Anyway of the 3, I would likely prefer David A to win, but I think it will be David Cook...another Jordin Sparks...and I hated everyone in that season too. Time to go American Idol...more like bone idle.

tina Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

cleary david cook is set to win, he is the highest in votes on dial idol

the person who comes in second is lucky as they are not locked into the contract like the winner-- just like daughtry, it doesnt matter who wins

and how fair is it to put a 17 (barely 17) year old against a 27 year old pro. Clearly Cook is better at picking out songs.. This Idol is Over, Cook won--but everyone in the top 5 will get a record deal :-)

I agree that i should be in jail or psychiatric ward. I'm an obnoxious azzhole and will do anything to see my son win. Didn't you know that I picked Carly and Ramiele's outfits every night? I also told them which songs to sing in order to sabotage them. I told Brooke to start over whenever she forgets her words, and I slipped some of Paula's stash into Jason Castro's drink. I made Amanda think that her skunk hairdo is gorgeous, brain-washed Luke Menard into singing Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, and told Danny that talking back and being flamboyant will win him fans.

david'sfans4ever Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

We love both of DAVID'S so much...
David Cook arrangement is really brilliant, and his voice is amazing too!!
David Archuleta is the best ballad/pop singer that we ever heard, and his voice is amazing like David Cook!!

Still vote for both of DAVID'S....

TaRessa Wed, May 14, 2008 at 01:26 AM EST

To robin: you are obviously Jeff Archuleta. David Archuleta is an abused kid and is annoying to listen to because all he does is oooohhh his way through his song. I cannot take another run-filled and melisma-driven performance from him. And his dad should be in jail. Or psychiatric hospital.

I am not a teeny bopper and I voted for David A. I think his voice is amazing and I will buy his music. I don't see how the show is favoring him as was stated by some people. On the contrary, they certainly did not do him any favors tonight. The song picked by the producers was terrible for him, the back up singers were too loud and the arrangement did not work for him or show off his voice at all. It seems like this week they did about everything they could do to hurt his chances including releasing the story about his dad on the day he was having his hometown visit. By the way, he is a fun, happy kid at home with lots of friends and a family that supports and loves him. He is not gay or abused. He is a great person, does well in school, and tries to be nice to everyone. He is an idealist that believes we can make the world a better place. He has a voice that moves and touches people of all ages.If it is not your thing then listen to who you like and quit hating.

Markh13 Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

I think I just saw the most blatant attempt to fix a reality show in TV history. Shame on you American Idol. Time to move on to another show.

kk Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

I wish Nigel had done this earlier in the season. I believe DA's father acted like a manager/coach giving him an unfair advantage over the other contestants. I now wonder if AI is having regrets. DC did a great job on "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", but I have to admit I was missing Jason. There is just something about his voice that I love.

Montey Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

Randy said that David A. could sing a Phone book and it would be great. Thats because I could open a phone book and pick someone and they could sing better that David A.

Rick Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

The only thing that's boring here are all the usual musician wannabe's. David A is a fresh talent.

Jolly Johanna Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I think the word "idol" is a bit too much when it comes to talent. America's favorite would be more appropriate really. And even then, is it all of America's favorite? Syeesha seems the only really talented singer, with a chance to really go places. The other two have some talent, but I have heard hetter. Good luck Syeesha.

Amy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

Get real people! David A is SOOO BORING! I can definitely hear the same thing on a cruise ship. GO DAVID C!!!!!!!!!

Guamie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

It’s all about demographics. A win for David Archuleta strikes fear in certain typical music junkies because the appeal isn’t just to people like them. I rarely paid attention to AI until Archuleta came along.

Linda Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

David A. has the best quality if you're talking singing talent. David C. is kind of smug and faking sweet thank-you humble stuff...BUT he does possess star quality along with singing well. Syesha, did I even spell her name right? She is mediocre compared to either David. Token female! David A. should win based on singing ability.

Montey Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

David A sounds the same every week, All he knows is the same ol boring , NO vocal ability, slow songs. David Cook knows how to reach a higher level with his voice. The only reason that David A. is still around is because of the teeny bopper girl vote. Syesha is much better than David A. but she wont make it any further because of the teen girl vote for David A.

David Cook is only 25 years old and obviously, Idol is a chance for him to get known. We had not heard of Daughtry before Idol, but Daughtry was the biggest selling CD of the year. David Cook is the real thing--singer, musician, writer, arranger--if David A is so talented, why has he had no career since winning Star Search (a national TV show)? He is very young for his age and his voice is simply not the type of voice that sells CD's. David Cook is ready to be a superstar and handle what comes with it. David A needs some time to grow up and run his own career for a while. His unsuccessful attempt to sing a contemporary song tonight shows just how unmarketable he is. I hope that the producers were listening carefully, because although he is a talented child, he needs a few more lessons before he is ready--and this is for his own good. Idol needs to have somebody win who can sell CD's and perform on stage effectively. David Cook is the one who should win this year.

Karem Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

That father seems like a real creep. David A. has a very disturbing affect, and while some may find him endearing, he rubs me the wrong way. He has a pleasant voice, but, he is exceedingly dull. Maybe it's because he doesn't sing my style of music, but, what bothers me the most is the way it seems like the show had picked him as the winner from the very beginning. I think that's what's empowered his domineering stage dad. He feels like he has that right because he knows that they had chosen the kid all along, and feels he is in a position of power. I don't buy this ruse of stating publicly that he's banned from backstage. I believe they already have verbal agreements to sign him, and that's that. Idol really plummeted this year. I think it's going to be a swift decline after the strange boy wins. Why watch this show anymore? I don't care if the public really picks the idol, but, why does it have to go to such a numbingly uninspiring tot? Goodbye Idol.

Herculeon Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

If David Cook is the REAL DEAL then why has no one ever heard of him before??? American Idol is a TALENT CONTEST people....Every contestant brings something special with them stop being a HATER just because you are SELFISH AND WANT YOUR FAVOURITE TO WIN.

I want an Archuletta/Mercado final because I am sick and tired of people trying to tell David Cook is the REAL THING!!!

cHArlOTSmTh Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

I am so tired of this bull. Nigel needs to call it quits with this idol thing and start something like "Clown Idols",, cause that is all this show has become..... and the judges needs to be the clowns

kcboricua Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Whatever is the raw non PC reason it looks like David's dad wants this more than the kid. This is the classic living vicariously thru your child taken to an unhealthy extreme! Like the 100K David won on Star Search apparently was not enough.

Kacie, I totally agree. If it was an really an issue of fairness, then it should have been that way from the start. Sounds to me like Nigel is working the spin machine. Sure the exchange may not have been 'nasty' but the fact still remains that the dad was way too involved for way too long.

Leila Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

Archufans, please chill. Acknowledge that Jeff is an idiot. It's not the same as saying that David doesn't deserve to win. We're not voting for the parents.

From what I've seen, David handled the change just fine, he did great tonight, if anything better than when his Dad was had the reins on his rehearsals.

can't believe i watch this stuff Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

And as for Idol judges and producers taking it easy on David...if they are I would argue it is because he is so young and fragile and an abused kid. You don't hit an abused kid while he's down and idol doesn't want a suicide linked to the show. This kid needs help--hopefully they can ban dad from the tour.

christie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

i think regardless of david archuleta's dad's problems david is still the favorite and how anyone would say he is boring is just crazy they are just tone deaf and can't hear true talent

can't believe i watch this stuff Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

I believe that the producers are actually trying to protect little David and the other contestants from an abusive (hopefully just verbally) man. The other contestants do not like this man at all and the producers wouldn't risk being called unfair (or being sued for it) if they didn't have very good reason to keep this guy away from his kid. Just another crazy mormon.

TaRessa Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

Nigel Lythgoe is the scariest-looking drag queen I've ever seen. Wasn't he in this season's Survivor using the name Chet?

tweety Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

They should've casted David A for Wall-E, he's like a robot, no feelings, no charisma, no energie, no emotion, just a lot of lip licking. They should cast him along with his dad of the stage. Just imagine him winning Idols, he'll sing the winning song and his dad will chip in with a couple of his own lyrics, what a fiasco. Get this couple of the show, please!!!!! At least David A might make it on broadway, or puppet shows....maybe. He's a joke along with his dad.

Amy Jordan Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

David A is a normal 17 yo--sometimes polished and sometimes doesn't know what to say. There is alot of age bias out there in the bloggers for the entertainment world for a 17 yo. He is shy and sensitive and alot of ppl are uncomfortable with that b/c they haven't resolved their own teenage angst.

So you don't like his music, his style, his sensitivity, his age - fine -it doesn't mean anything except he isn't suited to your preference for music nor the appearance of the person (ppl) who sing the music you like.

Does it make you feel good to put down someone different from you or your preferences? How mature!

Get a life if you think bashing anyone gets you points; get over your anger about your youth.

I am not sure who I will vote for tonite but you David A bashers make me very focused on his performance and if he does at all well, vote for him I will.

Doogie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

Apparently, Nigel has swooped in to do some damage control. The "equal opportunity" card is BS. If he were so concerned with equal opportunity, Nigel would not have: 1) Allowed Papa Archie to consult with his son. 2) Given Archie so much "aw shucks" airtime with the pit of shrieking girls. (Not fair to the female contestants, was it?) 3) "Instructed" the judges to praise Archie every time he forget a lyric, overtly vamped on the choruses, sang out of tune, etc. Damage control....and the ratings continue to slip.

Julia Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

David Archuleta is very overrated. Honestly, I can't even listen to him. He has been the chosen winner since long before the show started though so he will win and Idol will lose even more credibility.

zpez73 Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

It is obvious that David A has an advantage with his dad helping him and it is obvious that AI wants him to win. David A can barely complete a sentence without giggling and he has no self esteem. He is 17 years old. He has won Star Search. He has performed for many years. There are only two reasons why he acts like he does. One, it is for votes. Two, his dad controls his life and he has no other idea how to act like a normal teen because of his dad. I am leaning toward reason two. I root for David Cook, but most likely the winner of AI is Jeff Archuleta, er, I mean David A.

Lola Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

If it trots like a pony, and neighs like a pony, it is a (one trick) pony. Nice boy...but he needs to get away from his daddy who is controlling him and trying his best to live vicariously through him. Nigel should have intervened earlier but couldn't because David A is a minor. Most importantly, the kid won't have any staying power musically...he hasn't shown any originality (unlike David C) except to do vocal runs. Yawn. He needs to develop...and away from daddy dearest. David C all the way!

Marcus Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

David's dad is just taking steps to keep his son's homosexuality under wraps. For the time being. He knows if David is outed before the final vote, there is no way he can win. That's why he had David sing about beautiful girls in Stand by Me. If David is able to win, they'll keep him in the closet until he gets big enough to come out fully. Right now, no one wants to vote for a gay seventeen-year-old boy.

L Kennedy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

Ok, in my humble opinion it is all about creating buzz...publicity for the show. Think about it...everyone watch now and see how little Arch does without his Dad. Guess what? He will do great no matter what because he is talented, he will get lots of votes because everyone will feel sorry for him and the show will get the ratings it wants. Please, let's not fall for all of this!

Simon fulller Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

Maybe Nigel can explain this.....

PROOF OF AMERICAN IDOL FRAUD!!!!

This is the second year in a row that American

Idol has had a songwriting contest. Since the

contest ended last year I've researched the

contestants from last year and this year....FYI

there were over 25,000 entries last year at

$10.00 for each song. 20 songs were then

chosen out of the 25,000 for an online vote.

The winner's song is then performed on the

American Idol Finale. The problem I have is

that one of THIS years Top 20 Finalist is a

Co-writer of LAST years Top 20 Winner.

Somebody from American Idol has some

explaining to do.

THERE IS A LOT, LOT, LOT MORE!!!!!
FOR ALL THE FACTS PLEASE VISIT....

Deborah Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

We have no way of knowing what REALLY happened between Lythgoe and DA's dad.
Rumor is they sent Dad an email telling him not to add the line to the song and he did anyway. That more than anything probably pissed them off. Davids a fine singer but too young and bubblegum for me to ever buy his music but I know he'll be successful. My daughter says he always looks like he's about to start crying! I want DC to win. He sings great and looks hotter and hotter every week! We will vote for DC for two straight hours tonite! And text!

Garry Hannon Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

If it looks like sheet and it smells like sheet and especially if it sounds like sheet, it is more than likely-SHEET!
His dad looks like a monster. It may be the desperation in his eyes or maybe because this big queen just saw Patti LuPone in GYPSY on Broadway, you decide!

sixdoors Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

All these nasty comments will do no good for there are legions voting for David Archuleta. And we are not just tweens. We are your fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, grandfathers, grandmothers, employers, professional, technical, city, federal, state workers and even unemployed ones who know talent when we see it. And we want him to win, because he deserves and is worthy of the title. The other David will make it in the music industry despite being number 2, and Sayesha will be Broadway bound, so all will eventually be successful.

Joy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

Of course David A will win, REMEMBER it's a popularity contest NOT a singing contest! It's probably good that David C doesn't have to do what the AI execs tell him to.

With You is not a ballad, it is a very midtempo song.

Haley Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

I think David Archuleta is so overrated. Come on, he can barely answer an easy question. He'll be in so much trouble if he wins because he'd have to deal with so much press and everything. He's really not that cute either.
Syesha and Cook for the win!

Bill Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Archuleta is not marketable to people of his own age let alone anyone else.
David Cook should win. He's most like Daughtry who is the most successful AI to date. That being said, I'll still vote for Archuleta because he's got a mom who is smokin' hot!

Cheryl Nelson Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

David A. is just tooooo young. Period. If David Cook turns into this season's Chris Daughtry, he'd probably be better off, but I wouldn't watch another season. David Cook is ready for the big time-David A. would be yet another flash in the pan...can you say Taylor Hicks anyone???

Just a little conspiracy thought for you all. Even if DA chrshes and burns toninght (especially if he crashes adn burns)the Archangels will text their digits to the bone cuz he had sucha tough week and nasty Nigel took Daddy away. If he does great he gets the votes cuz "he's even more doable/cute/talented than he seemed." Win/Win for DA, TCO

Sparky Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Please!!!! I quote:
"He sings more than ballads. Tonight he will be singing a very current R&B number, Chris Brown's "With You"."

Another friggin ballad!!! Lordy!! The kid has great voice, but he's an emotionless void. He's the little boy with the big boy voice, but otherwise, he's got NO charisma, NO stage presence, NO personality. This isn't just SINGING it's about the next great POP STAR, and Dorkuleta is no pop star.

Puritans Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Sounds like Nigel thinks he can be even BETTER w/o Dad. Goes back to the other article EW had, asking if they should raise the age to 18 and make all parents back off - sounds like a good plan!

Anna Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Both Davids are telented. However. Archie is only good for one thing, and as previous people have stated, youwould only hear his music when walking around Bed Bath and Beyond and over head youthink...hey that sound familiar. David Cook on the other hand is raw, and I can hear him on the radio. More telnted than one note Daughtry..who is good..but always souns the same. Poor Syesha, might, has to go though the motions of knowing she is doomed tonight. I wonder what curtain Paula will be wearing, how many times will Randy say baby that was hot, and maybe just maybe f we are lucky...Simon will have done something with his har that does not look like the parting of the red sea

K Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

From the very first time I heard David Archuleta during the audition process, I've thought that he is an amazing singer. He has vocal chops beyond his 17 years, and when he perfomed "Imagine" I was in awe.

However...he doesn't come across to me as "star material", and that's what I want in an Idol winner. And that's one of the many reasons why I love David Cook. He's got a great voice, fantastic stage presence and major sex appeal - what more can a woman ask for?

siena Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I agree with Kacey! Just check this out! Syesha already sang "If I Ain't Got You"(Randy's pick)on another show "the One" before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS7C795bYp4

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

He sings more than ballads. Tonight he will be singing a very current R&B number, Chris Brown's "With You".

If he does well on that, I think it will really showcase more of his versatility that a lot of his detractors doubt.

Nikki Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I can almost hear Clive Davis calling Nigel and telling him "PLEASE, no more favoritism for David A...I WILL NOT deal with the stage dad from hell!"

fmita Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

I am still real glad that Archie stopped LICKING HIS EYEBROWS thoroughout his performances. Now that was creepy!

Justin Castillo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

For anyone who thinks Jeff is a nightmare, I give you Rocky from I Know My Kid's A Star on VH1 as Exhibit A.

O'Boogie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

God, please don't let this creepy, lip-licking lizard boy win. Ack. I just can't another second of his gaspy, dull singing. Anybody but Dorkuleta for the win!

Sarko Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

Better late than never I guess. My only question is why did it take them so long? Does that mean the contestants out before this ban did not have the same opportunities? Hmmmmm.....Jordin Sparks was the same age and did it all on her own-why did they allow Archie's dad to do this for so long?

Sarko Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

My Thought Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I know Idol wanted David A to win this season, but I have a nagging suspicion that David C might take the title. The show waited years for David A to be old enough to compete, but I think his father is a problem they may not want to handle. They should have waited one more year until he was 18, so Stage Daddy could be locked out from the beginning. The kid is bland and unlike any 17 year old Disney/Nickolodean kid. He's not going to hold his tween/teen appeal with sappy ballads that Daddy picks out. I guess David Cook is the one bright spot on an otherwise muserable season. I hope last year is not loaded with sub-par talented PLANTS. It killed this season. David A is not a bad singer, but he would have been shredded by the judges in any other season (bland, no personality, no charisma, etc). He is the Chosen One, and can do no wrong. So glad it's over soon.

So how is Cook the "real deal" and not Archie? Just because your personal taste runs more along the lines of rock doesn't make Cook better. I don't like Cook's music but I recognize how talented he is.. too many Cook fans feel they have to bash Archie in praising Cook. Somehow I don't think that's something David Cook would ever do.

Not gonna lie... Archie's mom is hot.

nutz4rice Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

forget the mama...David A. is one hot little piece of latina tail

This guy was hilarious on www.thehumanhybrid.com !

Kelly Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I disagree...I think the best singer of the competition was already sent packing weeks ago in the form of Carly Smithson. While I do see the appeal of little Archie, I have to say that he certainly does NOTHING for me. He took two of my favorite songs in the world last week, did pretty good with one and completely butchered the other. Again, just my opinion, which we are all entitled to. I love the "fact is", "hands down", etc. comments like the poster's opinion is the way we should all feel and think. Archie's dad sounds like a pain in the rear end and hopefully this will let Archie feel more comfortable on stage...I've always felt like he looked nervous or scared at times.

ToBeFair Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Finally, Nigel came out to clean things up though the damage has been done.
Archie is not one trick pony and he sung more than ballad (Stand By Me last week is great). If he were the one trick pony, others (especially rocker) would be too. If a rocker didn't shine in a Rock & Roll night, could we reach the conclusion that the rocker isn't real rocker? Be fair and face the fact the Archie is a brilliant singer.

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

haha i think this is just done to create some controversy which isnt paula related =) to take the focus off her, so she can relax for a while.

xo Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

whatever. AI got the press they wanted leading to tonight's show. Nigel let it stew and came in for damage control at the right time. all well-crafted by TPTB. what can you say...it's a business. can we just enjoy the stinkin show now?

Cat Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

I've said it before and I'll say it again: last week wasn't ROCK NIGHT! It was a list of 500 songs compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If they put songs on there that weren't rock, then take it up with them. D.A. wasn't doing anything wrong with not choosing a genuine "rock" number.

Suzie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

At the end of the day, Davids voice and talent has nothing to do with whether or not his dad is a tad overbearing. Dont punish the son for the supposed sins of the father.

Archuleta IS THE BEST SINGER this year. Hands down.

maxwell19596 Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

We have heard all season that David A's dad is a bit creepy, and isn't this icing on the cake! Now let's see what happens. Make the creepy dude sit in the back...hahahaha

Ugh! Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

I just have to say to all those who say..."I think, I believe, etc" Those are your opinions! You have every right to express them. However, Nigel is pretty clear!

For those who say David Archuleta is not current. Let me remind you of the themes this year! We really have no idea what any of the contestants will sound like out in the real world. Yes, we know David Cook is a rocker, but I am not completely sold that he has been able to show his true style on the show. David Archuleta is a R&B, soulful singer. He really hasn't been able to show that either. Syesha, umm, not sure where she would be placed either. She's been the Diva that's for sure, but who is she really!?

All, I am saying is this: American Idol really doesn't show case what these contestants will completely sound like on their own record label. I do "believe" all of them will be very successful in each of their different genres of music. You may not like a specific kind, but there's room for them all!!

LupeMePinga Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I could care less about little David or his usurping, coat-tail-rider of a father, but his mom is a hot little piece of Latina tail, that's for sure! Quiero comer su chocha!

Robin Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I know that EW is anti-David A. territory so I try to stay away..but I wanted to read what Nigel had to say. I'm not sure now if he's pimping for Archie or Cook...either way...I will vote my heart out for David A. because of his amazing ability. I am tired of the bashing about his dad, his answering questions, etc. etc. It is a SINGING competition! Why is that so hard to understand?? It's NOT about arrangement of music. BTW---does Cook, in his arrogant smugness, REALLY think he is ground breaking?? (or even worse, "hot"?? yeeech!) Now THAT's a joke!!

Archie is so sweet Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

David's coach was right..
David Archuleta for thw win..
we love you Archie..ignore
the envious people please, don't be
jealous of David A please..His voice is amazing!!!!
Good luck for tonight DA,
God Bless You!!

John Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

I never get bored at his ballads as well as his non-ballad songs. His pop music will be sold way more than rock songs. By the time he reaches at 25, his name will be well known worldwide.

nick Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

i think what we have here between the two davids is very similar to clay vs ruben. one is the better singer and one is a very good singer but a little more of a 'star'. i voted for ruben back then cause i thought the better singer should win. i now think the 'star' should win, cause thats more idol.

Suzanne Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Actually, I'm kind of impressed with this answer, and I'm glad he made clear that it's not about Stand By Me. I guess they thought that David needed some space, so okay.

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Actually he'll be singing a VERY current song tonight. As in released in 2007

Jamsa Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

In a way, I think it is good for David and the crew. They can move freely without the dad watching every move. Good point, just taking the the pressure a little bit. Archuleta for the win!!!!!!!

DW. Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

This bit from Time.com is particularly interesting:

> Despite a warning, Jeff Archuleta insisted on altering Stand by Me, one of two songs his son sang on the show Tuesday. By adding a verse from Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls, the father incurred additional costs for American Idol, the person said.

That about says it all. "We don't care about fairness, choice, the dad being a pain, whatever. But when you start costing us money, that's the last straw."

Kacey Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I call BS. Like I said before, I think it really stinks that Idol producers are pulling the "equal opportunity" card this late in the game. The dad should have been "asked not to participate" from the beginning if that is the case. They had to know that this drama would be a distraction to little David, not to mention a huge embarrassment for him. As if he really needs this right before the finals.I believe Idol producers are trying to throw David Archuletta's game off by not allowing his father to be involved now because they obviously want David Cook to win.

Loop Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

I am so over this show... but this kid's dad sounds like Kit Culkin Version 2.0

Archuleta doesn't have any other style besides performing ballads. What did he do for rock night? Another ballad. He sings well, but he really bores me.

Kris Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I don't see Archie as the favorite anymore at all. Whenever Ryan asks him a question he can never come up with anything to say. I think his Dad is probably more to do with his success than anything. I think you take that away and America will see what I've seen all along. He's got a great voice, but he's boring and a total ballad singer of songs that are way too old for him. He's not current, he's not fun, he never looks happy, and he lacks charisma. The only thing getting him through this competition has been the incredible amounts of young women voting for him. If he wins mark my words that his album will not sell as well as Cook's and he will fade away like the Taylor's and Sanjaya's.

heatheronthehill Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Archie is a 1 trick pony. David Cook is the REAL DEAL!!!

wontonjon Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

well if it's not obvious that archie is the favorite to win, then i don't know what is
