John Rich: ''American Idol' infuriates me'

May 2, 2008, 03:35 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: American Idol, Music, Music Biz, Television, TV Biz

Johnrich_l Country music star John Rich, of Big & Rich, attacked American Idol at a press conference this morning. "American Idol infuriates me as an artist," Rich said at NBC's "All American Summer" Press Day in Pasadena, where Rich was stumping for his talent competition show, Nashville Star (which is moving to NBC after five seasons on USA). "You can tell when somebody's comment was scripted. You can tell when a [competing] artist was told to wear this and sing that. That's not going to happen in [Nashville Star]." Rich, who will function as a judge and mentor on Nashville Star, as well as produce the album of the NS winner, said he was especially upset when Paula Abdul commented Tuesday night on Jason Castro's second song before the dreadlocked contestant had actually sung it. "Why don't you just walk up on stage and slap them right across the face while you're at it?" Rich said. "It's not a problem of [a judge] being tough on somebody. You've got to be tough on people and be honest with them. But you've got to respect these people. This is their entire life hanging by a thread....I'm sure [Paula] is a fine lady, but I thought that was a very, very disrespectful thing."

kimconmom Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Thanks you, Mr. Rich for defending what happened to Jason this week and calling them on it. For the record, there has never been a formal apology given to Jason. At the moment, he's being chewed up and spit out by the big AI machine, in hopes of their dream "David's" finale. I hope, and pray, that he comes out of this debacle relatively unscathed and has a wonderful career ahead of him!

Suzie H Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Finally, someone is pulling the focus of this travesty back on the person most affected. Paula might have given away what many have suspected all along - that Idol is completely slanted towards the contestants they rather than America want to win - but she did even worst by Jason Castro. The boy had to perform in front of millions knowing he would be criticized regardless of how well or not he did.

And never a word of apology to him from Paula or the Idol producers. Shame on AI! Count me as a viewer who won't be tuning in once Mr. Castro is gone.

Sarah Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Thank you for coming out and saying what all us dreadheads believe

dashing4 Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Thank you!! The most disrespectful part was their lame cover-up. Paula stated " OMG, I thought you sang twice!" Her comments weren't didn't make sense for David Cook. Once Jason is gone, I'm gone too. I seriously hope that Nigel's stupid dance show tanks as well as the future of American Idol.

dewey Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

The important passages being, "where Rich was stumping for his talent competition show, Nashville Star."

He's trying to get people to watch his show (which has what, 1/10 the ratings of AI?) by taking them on in a supposed grudge match. This is the style of professional wrestling. Talk about staged!

Rhonda Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Thank you for expressing publicly what so many of have been saying. American Idol should be ashamed for trying to sweep this situation under the rug with nary a backward glance at those that were hurt. Yes, an apology from Paula (and AI in general)is definitely warranted here. In addition, Simon and Randy should be reprimanded for the nasty comments they have made about Jason Castro during recent interviews. Their role on this show should be to guide and help these young people, not to break them down and speak unfavorably about them to the press. Jason has shown them nothing but respect throughout this whole process. It shows poor class on their part to participate in a smear campaign against this fine young man. I have lost all respect for the producers of this show for allowing (and encouraging) such reprehensible behavior.

sam Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

Thank you, Mr. Rich for having the guts to step up to the plate and giving the truth on this whole mess. The "powers" at AI and Paula herself should have the same guts and publicly apologize to Jason. They are all sure "at the ready" to slam him every chance they get and in public forums. This show has been going down the tubes for awhile now and I think I can find better ways to occupy my time next season. I will give AI this much credit, though, they have helped launch a kid that will have an amazing career. Come on, Jason, we're waiting on your forthcoming CD!!

A-MAZING Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I agree with John 100%. The producers & judges at AI are not interested in anything except themselves. They are disrespectful of contestants and think that American are fools. America is not falling for their pranks and tricks. If they want to pick they winner, why ask America to vote??
Thank you John Rich for being an honest and upright man!

Carrie Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

It is about time that SOMEONE pointed out how rediculous that was. Thank you for having good sense!!

Lisa Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Thank-you, Mr. Rich. I also found it odd that there was no apology made to Jason, considering the judges in the past have apologized even if they looked back at a recording of the show and realize they've been too harsh on someone. They were not only overly harsh, but they likely seriously damaged his chances of being confident for the performance. That alone deserved an apology.

jayeb Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Thank You Mr Rich, and he didn't get a public apology either, fox is trying to sweep it under the rug and continue to berate him on national television.... I am a Jason Castro fan from the word go and they are making it really tough on his fans as well.... again thank you from the bottom of my heart..... dh1458

Angela Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

All I have to say is Thank you! Thank you for shinning the light on the true problem here! Come on AI stop disrespecting the contestants!!

paige Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

simon cowell was made to apologized in one episode of AI (to brooke, violinist, paula et al). paula should do hers too.

ltpj Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

Finally someone speaks the truth. AI majorly f*d up and they can't even respond with a proper comment on the event. All they say is they are aware of the gossip on the internet about Paula and the rumers aren't true. What rumers? That Paula is completely wasted on pharmies? Or that the show is scripted and the producers have a master plan to get Jason out of the competition? Thanks you M. Rich for calling a spade a spade.

Give me a break Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Wow, what a bunch of saps! This guy is promoting his own show, which is a competitor (though not much competition) and a knock-off of American Idol. You really think he cares about the contestants on AI?? He's just taking the opportunity to promote his own show. You people make it sound like this guy is some sort of hero.

Someone states the obvious, at last Fri, May 2, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Thanks, John Rich. AI won't answer with integrity, of course; they've already proved they have none.

Good thing you're moving your own show to NBC and not to Fox, home of the sleaze.

seattle_girl Fri, May 2, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Great comments from Mr. Rich. The AI machine has totally ignored the fact that these are PEOPLE up there on the stage that deserve to be treated with honor and dignity. And oh how PREDICTABLE that the only sympathy extended publically was to poor poor Paula for the **gasp** rumors circulating (again).

Amy Fri, May 2, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

Regardless of whether Rich was promoting his show or not, he is correct in that it was disrespectful and it was much like a "slap in the face" to Jason Castro. The lack of apology or apparent remorse, the way they have been treating some of these contestants, especially Castro who is a nice, talented young man, will ensure I will NOT be tuning in once Jason is gone. Disgraceful. And I entirely agree with Rhonda in that the fact that all the judges (particularly Simon and Randy) have been going around bashing this kid on every show that will have them makes me sick. How unprofessional and appalling.

jules Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Pretty funny that John Rich made Diana DeGarmo cry on his own show because he was such a jerk to the contestants. Yeah, he cares whether AI was mean to Jason Castro. All he cares is that he's getting his name and his show's name in the press.

If you saw him lay into Diana, you would never care what the a$$hole has to say about anything.

dan Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

Mr Rich - I have seen your show and saw what a gentleman you were even when being tough. Right on - someone who is finally speaking out and not afraid of AI - OMG Have Jason CAstro on your next show - the one where you have someone change up their style to country - how cool would that be???

dan Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

Yes, he made her cry but his brutal HONESTY IS WHAT IS LACKING ON IDOL!!!!! PAULA LIED THRU HER BUTT YET THE POWERS THAT BE KEEP ENABLING THAT MESS - I ALMOST FEEL SORRY FOR HER SHE IS THEIR DUM PAWN TO GET THE RATINGS UP AND THEY LET IT EFFECT JASON BUT I BET ONE MILLION BUCKS IF THAT HAD BEEN THE DAVIDS - THEY WOULD GET A MILLION TRILLION APOLOGIES

disgusted with ai Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

Yes, he made her cry but the difference here is he did not LIE and tell her that right before she went on to sing in front of millions. He didnt say - uh hey I havent heard you sing yet in front of these fine people but I just want you to know before you begin that you suck!!!

micci Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Yeah, Mr. Rich has a LOT (sarcasm there) of credibility after the farce that was his "Gone Country" show.

Paula's comment about Jason was nothing compared to the way John Rich lay into Diana DeGarmo on "Gone Country". He was brutal to that girl.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

disgusted with ai Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

I saw these morons on this one news station just laughing - oh thats just Paula she made a mistake. It is NOT that she read from a script that is so upsetting it is that she lied and keeps on lying about who she said sucked that night right before they sang. How would YOU feel if you were ABOUT TO SING AND SOMEONE TOLD YOU, YOU MIGHT AS WELL SHUT UP (IN SO MANY WORDS) BECAUSE YOU ARE BAD EVEN THOUGH I HAVENT HEARD YOU YET!!!

Mr Rich was brutal - before she went out in front of thousands of people an she did really well because of that. He pulled no punches and did not lie - that is what most of the uproar is = Paula lied in front of millions right before this guy went on. BIG DIFFERENCE

ANN Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

YES HE WAS BRUTAL - BRUTALLY HONEST IN ALL HIS DEALINGS - COMPLETELY OPPOSITE OF AMERICAN IDIOT

No, his show is not in competition with AI - it is on a different day and time and it is country not pop - so WRONG -

Melinda Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

John Rich keeping it real. Wouldn't have expected anything else from him. It's so nice to see industry professionals stepping up in defense of these contestants. I am personally appalled at the treatment Jason has received this season. Such disrespect is completely unwarranted for such a talented and kind person.

And the effort made to defend Paula after Tuesday night's slip-up was pathetic. She and the show should be made to publicly apologize to Jason. After Tuesday, it was obvious to me that American Idol already has their critiques carefully planned before the contestants even step up to the mic to perform.

If this continues, American Idol will no longer receive my support as a viewer.

jason Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

i just hope this "outrage" would be the same if paula had said this to syesha. but somehow, i feel it wouldn't. draw your own conclusion.

Flower Power Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

Thanks for saying what so many Castro fans were thinking. I had never seen anything more disrespectful in my life! Then no one even apoloogized to him??? Shame on you Paula and AI. Someone needs to apologize to Jason on the air!!

kay Fri, May 2, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

You go John Rich!!!!! I agree completely. Just keepin it real aren't you. Look forward to you future work.........

Frank Fri, May 2, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

To the poster calling themselves Jason: Yes I would be just as outraged by the cruel acts of Paula and AI if there were directed at Shyesha,David A., Brooke or David C..None of these talented young people deserves treatment like that, but that facts are, Jason Castro is the one being bad mouthed, not just in the big slip up on the air but on countless talk shows and in the press. Not only by the judges but also by one of the producers. There is a rather large spin machine at work to try to sway people to vote to make AI happy. If they want more viewers, maybe they should respect the contestants and the public.

Rhonda Fri, May 2, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

After reading the latest comments, I felt compelled to add a few more of my own. Yes, I am a Castro fan, but I would be equally appalled if they had done this to any other contestant. I was utterly disgusted with Michael Johns' elimination earlier in the season. Not with the fact that he left, but with the disrespectful way in which it was handled. There is obviously no concern whatsoever for the feelings of these young people. I know they signed up for it, but I don't think a little bit of human decency or common courtesy is too much to ask for. To me, the lack of respect they have shown the contestants also shows a lack of respect for the viewing public. If the powers that be would do a little research before spouting off their mouths, they would realize that the majority of Jason's fans are NOT teenyboppers, nor are we idiots. We are the ones who are lining their pockets now by downloading iTunes (where Jason has outsold the others) and by purchasing CDs in the future.

penny Fri, May 2, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

If this had happened to their Davids, you bet ya'lls bottom dollar that an apology would be forthcoming and quick. They have been shoving the Davids down our face from day one. I give props to all the contestants even trying a lot or a little - they know they are not wanted. Why watch AI anymore when they have manipulated it to what they want to make money. It used to be the public choice, it is not really anymore as you can see how they script their comments to bias the votes.

penny Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

I agree Rhonda - I am a happily married woman over 30 and I angers me that they believe the viewing public is so stupid as to not get what they are doing. Thank you Paula for showing us and I actually feel sorry for you - Simon the producers are enabling you and using your addictions and mess ups to boost ratings - I hope they are happy when you overdose because of the stress of it all. (i sure hope that doesnt happen though)

DTK200 Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

Let's talk outrage for a second -- did anyone see Rich's show "Gone Country". Julio iglesias jr. won with the least country and worst song on the show -- shockingly, it was released to radio in March and didn't even chart.

Thank you Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

John Rich sums up what is wrong with AI. It's one thing to be tough, but the disrespect is awful. And it's not just what Paula did, it's all the crap that has been said and done in general on that show.

Contestants not getting song choices, being "forced" to sing songs they don't feel comforable singing, the pimping of some contestants, commenting on clothes, etc.

Yes, John Roch is plugging his show, but he's making a point that NS will not follow in the footsteps of AI and I applaud that.

I'm glad Jason made it through this week.

Jonathan Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Oh please, get over yourself.

BetJo Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Darn! When I first looked at the picture of this "country star" I thought I was looking at that "pregnant man" that appeared on Oprah. Looks EXACTLY like him/her.

Lou Fri, May 2, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

While I agree that Paula should have apologized to Jason, I think John Rich is being overly dramatic. American Idol is not their "whole lives" dangling in front of them by a thread. Give me a break. I think most of the contestants from the top 8 this year will have bright careers ahead of them. American Idol is just the diving platform. If that happened earlier in the season, it may have been more damning. As it stands, Castro gets another chance.

Ms. Scarlett Fri, May 2, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

Thank you John Rich. Finally someone who has the "chutzpah" to tell it like it is. I find it completely appalling that Ms. Abdul should be allowed to get away with such biased, unprincipled behavior. I used to have a modicum more of respect for Ms. Abdul over Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. But now she is just one more in that rat pack.

I wonder...how Idol sleeps at night.

Barbara Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

Thank you, Mr. Rich for your defense of Jason. I was apalled when I heard Paula comment on Jason's second song when he hadn't even sung it yet. Her confusing "explanation" both that night and in her interview on Ryan's radio show the next day still left one wondering just what DOES go on at AI. I have been a fan and supporter of Jason since he first "appeared" and sang Daydream; with no initial background or interview video; though I faithfully watched every tryout since the beginning of Season 7 - never could figure that one out. I love his voice and unique style of singing and have purchased all of his songs from ITunes. He is a fine young man with a wonderful career ahead of him, regardless of how things turn outfor him.

Ms Daisy Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:11 PM EST

Actually, this controversy probably kept Jason on the show one more week. He was not good Tuesday night and has not been good for several weeks. I think what happened probably got him a lot of votes that he normally would not have gotten.

Ms Daisy Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:11 PM EST

Man, I am with you on that one. The show screwed up big time. Next time Nigel best write those cue cards with better penmanship.

Here's my take on this situation, click my name, takes you to my site: IDOL BLUES.

jolene Fri, May 2, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

Right on!
American Idol has a script, and Paula read from the wrong page. The problem is not that Paula is so loony/drunk/high that she read the wrong page - the problem is that there is a SCRIPT in the first place.

amanda Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

thank you JOHN!! About time someone got it right, what paula did was very disrespectful. GO JASON!!!

ontarget Sat, May 3, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

pot meet kettle

jabo Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:22 AM EST

I don't think they are pushing THE Davids so much as they are pushing David Cook, their half bald, resident rocker. They have him prance around the stage like a peacook. Putting him front center in the group photos and singing the lead when the group sings together. Paula owes Jason a big apology. They have all been unfair with their comments to and about Jason. Simon has told Jason and Brooke what they should do on the next show, and when they do so he still put them down. They need three new judges. And, Mr. Rich, some of the judges I've seen on Nashville Star have little style or talent to be judging anyone else. To name a couple, the Compton bros comes to mind.

Reggie Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

Why are the people on this board defending Jason Castro? Sure, what happened on Tuesday night wasn't fair to the kid...but let's be honest..He's a no talent hack, who should have been gone weeks ago. How the likes of Michael Johns and Carly Smithson were sent home before him is beyond me, but that's besides the point. All of this "Once Jason's gone, I'm gone" crap is ridiculous. It's a TV show people! It's not the end all, be all. And you surely can't expect it to be 100% percent what they claim it is. Scripted or not, it makes for good TV. That's why you watch! Nothing on television is completely authentic, so why is this show held to such a high standard? It's entertainment...nothing more, nothing less.

Darlene Sat, May 3, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

Thank you for pointing out the real issue.

evelyn Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

I want to thank you for your comment about what happened to Jason. I think it is very umprofessional what they did to Jason and Paula needs to say sorry, but she wont because I realized now that she has no class. It is very sad to see what the producers are doing to Jason. They even had another magazine post a bad interview about him and take everything out of context and turn it around to fit AI's needs to try and get him voted off. They even had to take a few things out of the article after it was posted because it was false. The contestants are not suppose to be interviewed while they are still in contention of winning AI. A shameful tactic on AI's part to get Jasonvoted off. Well AI his fans see right through your shameful games.

I Love Jason Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

Whathas been overlooked in this debacle is that Jason, unlike any of the remaining contestants, is inexperienced when it comes to performing in public. He had only sung for an audience five times before going on AI. He is not a seasoned performer like the Davids or Syesha who have ben on tv or made cd's prior to thei Idol experience. Therefore, when Paula panned his second song BEFORE he even sang it for the audience, it shattered his confidence and he didn't perform to the best of his ability. He's not experienced enough to let criticism like that roll off his back, but he didn't break down like Brooke did when she was the target of such hatchet jobs. He gave it his best shot, despite having been seriously ill the week before and still not well, news which was kept quiet at HIS request because he didn't want pity votes (unlike Cook's trip to the ER earlier in the season...that made HEADLINES) Jason still performed admirably and deserves credit for even remaining onstage afterwards.

wh Sat, May 3, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I really dislike what happened to Jason this week. But as I point out to my kids all the time, it's TV--it's made up. That applies pretty much to every facet of 'show biz'. They wear costumes, make up, hit their marks, know what's going to happen and who's going to sing or say way before it even happens. They actually practice it over & over, called rehearsal, I believe. Don't get your hearts broken over make believe.

Sunny Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Now the show is issuing statements regarding how Mr. Rich liked the show when he visited last season. That does not negate nor confuse this issue. What Mr. Rich has said is his opinion of what is happening in the now. His statements are a reflection of what many realistic viewers are thinking.

Poster who said for folks not to get upset over 'make believe' is right on. That said, I'd love to see Castro take this further and turn this into an upset. Make lemonade from those lemons...

Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Thank Mr Rich for expresing how I I feel. I have watched Nashville Star in the past and AI needs to take some lessons from it's producers. I am a Jason fan and have felt for a long time they are trying to sabotage hime and now this just proves it. When Jason is gone so am I.

Kate Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

word, word, word, word, wordy mcword. thank you, mr. rich. people are writing this off because they don't like jason, but it's just disrespectful, and it would be for ANY of the other contestants. I promise, if it had been david cook in this position, there would have been an on-air apology and much pimping to make up for it.

Sue Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

I think that Mr Rich in his show had the right combo of good and bad - he never got downright evil, just brutally honest and I never knew of him before and love him and his music now. He is a down home country boy at heart and speaks the truth and I think it offended him, the lying and cover up Paula did, not the mistake.

dan Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

SUNNY - RIGHT ON - AGREED - WORD

ann Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Rich, you are my HERO - Finally someone with class to the very tips of his toes is speaking out against the Paulagate. For Jason haters you need to check out his studio clips on youtube and see how good the boy is. Back in the beginning see how his interviews (on top 12 boys daydream) werent cut the heck up to portray him as a dum a and Simon said Jason was "it" Sorry off subject my bad

Fran Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Loser. Who cares about this guy anyway? I'm sure his ridiculous show won't even get a tenth of the ratings of Idol. He is just trying to create publicity for himself.

Rhonda Sat, May 3, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

To say that this is not a big deal because Jason "should have been gone weeks ago" is totally missing the point. While I do not agree (I think he is very talented and obviously so do a lot of other people, or he wouldn't have made it this far) it is so not the issue right now. Most of us are upset because AI refuses to accept any responsibility for their actions and how they might affect the contestants. Just today, I read an interview with Simon where he stated that an aoplogy is not owed, that it was just a mistake. Since when does a mistake not require an apology? If you accidentally hit someone's car, you still apologize for it. No, you didn't MEAN to do it, but you're sorry just the same. It's called courtesy, and I believe that's all we are really asking for here.

Pete Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Well if you don't like what happened to Jason then don't vote for him to stay next week. That way he won't have to be subjected to the horrible torture Idol is inflicting on him without even publicly apologizing. After all it's not like he's there getting paid every week. Oh wait, yes it is, that's exactly why he's there. He signed a contract to participate on this show every week to go out there and take whatever the judges throw at him and he's getting a paycheck. No one owes him anything else, not even an apology. It's unfortunate that it happened, he should have brushed it off and done a better job. It's his own fault he wasn't able to do that.

Suzanne Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Disrespectful? AMEN FROM THE CHOIR! And so was Cowell, who should have at least tempered his remarks in light of the fact that Jason's confidence basically got run over by a truck before he had a chance to sing and not sneered that he didn't recognize him. Jeepers, how are we supposed to believe the show isn't rigged with this behaviour?

Diane Sat, May 3, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

After reading the postings, I can see the general consensus is that Mr. Rich was right in speaking up. This, again, tells me that Americans have more compassion and a sense of right and wrong. AI's British producers and judge could learn a few things from us.

Joy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Excellent comments and a huge "thank you" to Mr. Rich for sticking up for Jason. I've been furious since Tuesday at what this show is doing to tear Jason. Randy, Paula and Nigel are the worst - I do get the feeling that Simon rather likes him but in no way wants him in the final four. Well, he's there and I hope he brings it next week and shoves it in their faces. P.S. Nashville Star is a great show and I hope it doesn't ruin it when it transfers to network instead of cable.

Sat, May 3, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

keep trying to get viewers to watch youre crummy show

Claire Sat, May 3, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I am very glad to see Mr. Rich commenting on this issue. I am flabbergasted that so many people think it did not indicate a problem with the way the AI machine treats the contestants.

I actually agree that Jason Castro has not sung that well of late, but this is beside the point; Paula's evaluation of him, for good or ill, should have been based on work he had actually done. Furthermore, after this public humiliation, Castro still had to sing his song. It is very likely that he was quite shaken by what had happened and it couldn't have helped.

These kids deserve a level playing field. They also deserve judges who pay attention to what is going on around them. Pre-judging Castro's song may have been a mistake, but if one of them were to accidentally hit his car in the parking lot, there is still a need for apology and compensation.

People like Mr. Rich need to be commended for speaking out.

Judy C Sat, May 3, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

I cannot agree with those comments that seem to imply that John Rich is simply doing publicity for his new show. He seems to be as offended as many of us were by the on-going disrespect of several of the Idols by the judges and producers. Where is the Latin community in this controversy? Why haven't you stepped up to stand behind Jason Castro, a Colombian American?

What the ? Sun, May 4, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

ANOTHER THING, THEY NOT ONLY COVERED UP PAULAS LIES VERBALLY BUT PHYSICALLY. DO YOU THINK THAT WE DID NOT NOTICE THAT THEY HAD PAULA DRESSED LIKE THE VIRGIN MARY ON WEDNESDAY? WEEK AFTER WEEK SHE DRESS'S WITH HER BOOBS RESTING ON THE TABLE PRACTICALLY AND THEN SHE JUST HAPPENS TO COME ON PRACTICALLY IN A BIB?? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHE MADE A MISTAKE - THATS HUMAN BUT TO KEEP LYING THAT IS THE UNFORGIVABLE THING

gailer Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

Thank you John Rich! I couldnt agree with you more! I wish Jason would have been on your show!

beachn Sun, May 4, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

This is ridiculously blown out of proportion. The judges do not attend the dress rehearsal. But this week Paula was in the studio and has admitted that she heard both of Jason songs and had made some notes. The judges at the live performance held comments until after contestants had performed both songs. Paula looking at her notes which is understandable continued on with her critique of Jason's second song. Why is this an insult to Jason requiring an apology from Paula? It was just an error made by a forgetful and sometimes scattered Paula. Have we not all had these moments? The media and now you have contributed to spinning this out of control. I will admit that Paula gives reason to make herself a target at times. However, she did not insult Jason. I for one think by making a statement like this you are insulting Paula and owe her an apology.

Reality Check Sun, May 4, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

People, get a grip. What happened was absolutely wrong, but the reality is that Jason (who I think is awesome even though I'm almost old enough to be his mother and whose album I will definitely buy) has never had a real shot at winning Idol. He's one of those contestants who just needed to get on TV. If 19 doesn't pick him up, another label will. I'm sure he's already fielding several offers. He'll be just fine.

GET A GRIP Sun, May 4, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

I don't understand what the big deal is. First of all, nobody even listens to Paula! Second of all, Jason is not very good and should have been gone a while ago. He even said himself that he's ready to go home!! Paula messed up, it was dumb but since when does everybody pay so much attention to what she says? And their comments don't seem to be scripted at all. On the contrary I think that someone NEEDS to give Paula a script so we don't have to listen to 10 minutes of rambling and a bad repeat of pretty much what Randy had just said. This is like the first time I can ever remember Paula even saying something the least bit bad about Jason anyways. And I have to say I've lost a great deal of respect for JR after Gone Country. He picked the worst, least country contestant of them all. And AI has been around for a while now, the contestants know what they are getting themselves into. If they can't take it then don't audition.

evelyn Sun, May 4, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

OK Get a Grip, If this was your favor contestant you would feel the same way we do. They tried screwing Jason and that interview of him wanting to go home was taken out of context because the AI staff are trying to sway the vote away from Jason. Too bad his fans see right through their childish and immature tactics. We will continue to vote for Jason and we are a force to be messed with. We will not go down without a fight. Jason wants to be there and his reaction about being safe this past week speeks volumes. So the only one who needs to get a grip is the producers and judges that have been nothing but extremely unprofessional and they owe Jason a public appology.

Yank Sun, May 4, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

John Rich is a drunk, self-absorbed hillbilly that is an embarrassment to Nashville. The last time we heard anything from this hick is when he spouted off about hating gays. Loser!

hk Sun, May 4, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

what's happening????? Jason is no good at all, and why is everyone supporting him??????

Paul Mon, May 5, 2008 at 01:05 AM EST

As if I'd expect anything else from you considering you are pimping your own show that mimicks idol. You're real Big Mr. Rich....

Wissphoto Mon, May 5, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I believe the judges are frustrated by Jason's lack of intensity and lack of growth. Stop looking at his pretty face and face the facts that he has one of the weakest singing voices. He has no work ethic. He blew off learning his lyrics during Neil Diamond week and disrespected Neil Diamond by not being prepared. There are thousands of other Idol hopefuls that would kill to be in his spot and giving 100% each and every week. Yes he is a nice person, but from his comments and actions it looks like he is not ready or willing to do what it takes to be in this demanding spotlight. And that's okay. I think his vibe is better suited for intimate settings like college or small bar performances.

Rich Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Mr. Rich wouldn't be maybe knocking Idol to promote his show? Everybody has to take a shot at Idol because it's the King! Problems do occur on live TV, and this was a mess. But, for seven seasons Idol has run smooth and produced many successes, including the hugely sucessful COUNTRY STAR Carrie Underwood. I don't recall Nashville Star having a huge COUNTRY STAR. So Mr. Rich, just stick to your show and don't worry about Idol. It will be fine. And QUIT PICKING ON PAULA!!!!!

I just don't understand why Paula doesn't just apologize to Jason Castro on the air. I think they would find that if she did that this thing would finally go away. Even if they think it is being blown out of proportion,(I don't),what would be the harm in apologizing?I have always taught my kids that in situations like this, where they may or may not have hurt someone, to always err on the side of kindness.Aplogizing is something that has so much positive impact and is relatively cheap to the apologizer - although it does require admitting you made a mistake which Paula obviously can't do. Clearly there are a lot of AI fans who feel Jason was harmed by what Paula did and I don't think it would kill her to aplogize and would only help her reputation. If I were Jason, I would feel the same way he does - ready to go home. The deck is stacked against him and there is no way anyone can deny it. Why put all the hours of effort into a performance that is already deemed 'not good enough'?

Stosh Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

Is that what she said? I just hit the mute button everytime that a$$hole Paula speaks. I'm tired of the fact that she "loves" them and is "proud" of them. She is scum and should be gone.

Sandi Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

Having been an AI fan since the beginning, I have grown increasingly upset by the show and it's lack of respect for its contestants. It is one thing to offer suggestions that will help the participants and it's quite another to critize them to the point of damaging them in some way. This season has been the worst ever and I suppose I have noticed it because I am a huge fan of Jason Castro. Jason is the only contestant in the top 12, that I am aware of, that didn't have a professional career in music prior to the show. He is what this show was supposed to be about: finding the American Idol among untapped talent yet to be discovered. Regardless of the outcome of this season's AI, Jason will have a wonderful future and career because he is extremely talented and a generous and wonderful soul. I thank you, Mr. Rich, for your comments.

Dee Mon, May 5, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Thanks Mr. Rich for your comments on the Paula fiasco. No I don't think you're trying to get publicity for your own show. I think you have outstanding integrity and ethics which is lacking with the people on IDOL. Jason handled himself very well. I don't think he's giving up. Guess what folks he'll be in the final top 3. And he's going to have a wonderful career. He has such a huge fan base, he's unique and has alot of talent. I love his performances.

brooke Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

come on you people she made a mistack i think we all do that at times and if you say you dont then your lieing..this is the first time they ever did it that way any ways they were spose to juge after the second song so it counfused paula jason your a good singer keep up the good work

culturelady Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

Idol is so rigged. when will people learn...if this didn't prove it, nothing will. paula let the cat out of the bag people, and notice that they did not address the rumers of rigging it...they only addressed the fact that the rumors about paula being drunk or drugged weren't true. i'm still waiting for the day when some staff person finally bites the bullet and writes a tell all!

WildKAT Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Although I loathe country music I do agree with John Rich. A.I. has jumped the shark of credibility, and no matter what that arrogant jerk Simon says, Paula betrayed the show, the contestants AND audience by revealing the fact that it is scripted. A.I. producers will always cover their rearends with blathering and lies.
Apart from brainless little girls speed dialing votes for mewling little boys who are "cute" albeit talentless, adults and hip folks have long known that American Idol is rigged. Yes, folks it is ONLY a TV show, but it is billed as a REALITY show. HA! Truly good singers like Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and David Cook have been forced to endure producer enabled adulation of Archuleta by having fans rush the stage to hug him, and British manufactured pop tarts like Natasha Beddingfield slobbering on David A. If people can't see that it is fixed, absolutely dishonest and cruel toward the other contestants then the audience is truly stupid.

CJ Mon, May 5, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

Just now read this article and agree 100% with John Rich . I was disappointed Wed night when Ryan glossed over the faux pas of the night before by Paula. It was handled badly. For some, maybe they do not believe that Paula read from notes for both songs but why give 2 excuses about what happened when she should have stuck with the original. For me I really believe she had prescripted notes for both songs and in her usual(prescribed) drugged induced brain could not even get that right . They need to get rid of Paula and get someone who can at least think and talk at the same time. Someone who would not find it hard to read notes or give a review, even scripted ones. Someone who can leave the lala pills alone. Still AI needs to apoligize to Jason and to the viewers. Instead of patting us all our head and say "there have been rumors and Paula is one of us and we love her". That was their way of saying if you watch Idol we are just as dumb as Paula.

To Paul Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

If you meant Ryan was a homosexual , that maybe , but if he is he could not be homophobic too!

Leslie Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

I was absolutely floored by Paula's treatment of Jason Castro last week. Her opinion no longer matters to me. I happen to truly enjoy hearing Jason Castro sing far more than listen to Paula and the others abuse him, and then back peddle. I will listen and follow through with my support for this young man. He is a decent human being. Then, I will never, ever watch or support anything American Idol again. In fact, at this point, Jason Castro would be better off without that outfit. He is a wonderful entertainer who managed to keep his dignity, by standing in silence while the others used way too many words to defend the wrong doer. "Me thinks s/he (Paula, Simon, Ryan, Randy, Nigel) protests too much." Shakespeare said it long ago, and how fitting it is regarding this incident. Jason, I think you are a fine young man. I like your dreadlocks, I enjoy your humor and candor, your voice is rich and soothing, and I do believe you would use your title to do good things for all. Do not give up!

Stupido Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

Paula doesn't have a malicious bone in her body when it comes to the contestants. She screwed up. I'm sure Mr. Rich has never screwed up in his entire life. Wow, walking perfection. We have found him. Everyone bow down now to Mr. Perfection.

tracy Mon, May 5, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

eh. what happened to jason sucked, but he's a grown man - he'll live. that's the beauty of live tv, isn't it? and honestly, even if that whole paula *thing* hadn't happened, his performance of that song was never going to be anything great. he admitted himself that he wasn't comfortable with the song.

Lola Mon, May 5, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Why are people making such a big thing of this? Jason doesn't have half the talent that all the rest of the idols have. I am offended that John Rich even mentioned it Again. He just wanted some free advertising for his show, which I won't watch.

amanda Mon, May 5, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I love and thank rich for speaking out about how shameful AI and Paula was. I mean poor jason, i give him props for even performing after the comments paula made. If it was one of the david's she did that too she would have been apologized. If jason get eliminated, then im eliminating myself from the show.

Honey Mon, May 5, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

John Rich is correct. Jason deserved an apology. Paula is always making an a$$ out of herself, and there's always some excuse to cover up her nonsense. She shouldn't even be on Idol. She has no relevance in music what so ever. Her music sucked then and her wannabe music she is trying to make today sucks. The lousy excuse or whatever that Ryan made on Idol Wednesday about Paula being family, was just ridiculous. I don't care if she is part of their inbred family...they never addressed the issues at hand, and not only does Paula look ridiculous, ALL of Idol looks ridiculous. Why doesn't Nigel tell Paula to clean it up, she's obviously high on something or an alcoholic, because the woman is such a brainless moron with her dumb opinions...her opinions mean nothing, everyone is waiting for what Simon is going to say. They've finally admited to watching the contestants rehearsals...what a scam...that's not fair to the contestants. However, with that said, I don't like "NS," so.....

Shel Mon, May 5, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Bravo to John Rich for sticking up for the singer. If only American Idol thought to give even a fraction of that consideration to the contestants (and us!) who pay their salaries. Yes, it is a huge gift to these performers for them to be able to perform in front of millions on this show. But the show wouldn't exist without the contestants either. Perhaps the judges and producers might want to consider that the next time they decide to trash a poor kid's performance BEFORE he gives it.

Shel Mon, May 5, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I can't believe there are some people still acting like this wasn't a big deal because Jason isn't as talented as the rest of the Idols (in their view), or because Paula loves her contestants and just made an innocent mistake. Give me a break! It is ok if you think Jason sucks, but if it happens to YOUR favorite, then it would be horrible? And if Paula loves the contestants so much, she should have apologized, period, instead of taking on the mantle of victim. That said, how often have we heard Paula give a negative review??? But it just happens that her once-in-a-blue-moon bad review happened on the night she was reading NOTES???? Wake up, people. This stinks, big time, and should not just be ignored, or shrugged off as another Paula idiot moment.

Leslie Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

What happened the other night...with Paula's blunder, has doomed the show. Simon himself said, "You cannot underestimate the intelligence Of the overall audience." He is correct. The audience now knows that something is rotten in Denmark. Once the credibility of the show is lost, the show is over. That happened last week. The audience will see the contestants through to the end, but will vote the show off.

Ralph Connor Kendall Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Let's not forget John Rich was promoting his own talent show so he needed a grabber to get the headlines. Also, Paula is confused at the best of times. rck

staby Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I hope that Mr. Rich will quit worrying about AI and put his energy in Nashville Star and it's contestants. I have watched Star since it's first season and other than Buddy Jewel, have heard nothing from any of the other four winners. I don't know why anyone would want to win Nashville Star since they just disappear after winning.

And just for the record, Jason isn't the best singer in the contest. Paula may have messed up, but Jason should have been gone before Carly or Michael. And he gave an interview last week stating that getting gifts from fans was wierd and he would practice his songs when he got around to it and if people liked him they liked him and that he was actually ready to go home. Well, I think that wish is just about ready to come true. B'Bye.

Dee Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I think Jason is the best performer/singer and because he is ORIGINAL. Carly and Michael were off before him because Michael is a copy of Jim Morrison and Carly isn't sure what type of music she should sing. And Jason thought balloons were weird because he doesn't feel he's any better than anyone else and why should he get them. He also meant that what happens - happens (whether this is quoted word for word ?) it's in God's plan.

Dee Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

And it does stink what happened on Idol with Paula. She was really thrown off. You only can believe that they are told what to say. And if it wasn't such a big foul up they wouldn't have addressed it the next day. Even though they did that pretty bad also. Who cares what rumors are about her. She flat out lied.

MplsBrad Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

I don't really care what this cowboy says. He is obviously jealous of his competitor's much more popular show. Go back to your lame-ass country music.

Ire Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:55 AM EST

Remove all three judges when the show is over. infact wind it down completely. Boycott the show until a formal public apology has been issued to Mr Castro. Send a message to the shows producers that people are not stupid; the contestants should be treated with respect at all times. All this confirms my opinion that the votes are rigged and the judges have scripts with written remarks. Issue a formal apology to Mr Castro. He may not be the strongest singer, but he has the right to be treated like a human being. Paula should show some backbone and apologise to him, and so should all the A.I producers. Self indulgent judges should be removed, especially when they are told who to keep, and who to denigrate in the worst manner possible. Judges remarks are negative at worst and ill-thought at best. Treat the singers with respect, A.I judges and producers.

ronnie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

Big woo !!!! on your opinon, Rich. Promoting are we ?? Nashville Star is boring...And what is the big fuss about Paula,we all know she is goofy and it is not like we didn't know they watched the practice sessions and that was a crazy night.

Alex Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Please, Mr.Rich is no more than a redneck moron trying to plug his similarly biased show. Anyone who doesn't see past that is naive. AI sucks too and yes, they're both scripted.

A.I.E. Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Hello all,
I found something about this years songwriting contest you might find interesting.
One of this years top 20 songwriting finalist

Regie Hamm--The Time Of My Life

and last years American Idol Songwriting Contest Winner Scott Krippayne have Co-written together.
I will say that again because it bears repeating--------------------------------
Regie Hamm and last years American Idol Songwriting Contest Winner Scott Krippayne have Co-written together.

Search Regie Hamm Scott Krippayne use the keyword button

Remember last years 3rd place winner in the singing part of A.I----Melinda Doolittle?
Think about what the odds would have to be in 3 different national contests-----

Regie Hamm Scott Krippayne and Melinda Doolittle all appear on a cd in 2005 called After The Storm

And this is not all there

A.I.E. Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

And this is not all there is.
This is just the beginning,
American Idol claimed the songwriting contest was for amateurs
and American Idol charged ten dollars
per entry,
It's time for A.I.
to end.....

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

who cares what john rich thinks! he can't sing anyway!!!

Tony Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

It would be easier to take John Rich seriously if he wasn't making these statements in a season where he's going to be a judge on the USA Network (now on NBC) series that was spawned DIRECTLY because of Idol's success. It's more than a little disingenuous on his part to throw stones at Idol when he's about to fill the same Paula Abdul role on that show. It would have taken more and bigger stones for him to attack the show during a year in which he has nothing to do with a competing reality talent search.

Doesn't matter, though---anyone who's seen Nashville Star knows that it couldn't produce anything but gas on the record charts. Idol itself has produced more country acts than NS has in five years.

tinker bell Mon, May 12, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

I would listen to anything by Jason Castro over Paula Abdul anyday. This show is over for me.
