Jeff Probst talks about next 'Survivor' location

May 12, 2008, 02:10 AM | by Dalton Ross

Categories: TV Biz

Jeffprobst_l With Survivor: Micronesia in the books, the reality franchise is now gearing up for season 17 by going back to Africa. The show will be setting up shop on the continent’s west coast in the country of Gabon. “I didn’t know where it was,” confesses host Jeff Probst. “I had to look it up on a map. It is probably the most remote place we have ever gone.” What does that mean in terms of wildlife? “We don’t know,” Probst says. “No one’s really ever hung out there. We’re going to leave a boma with some sticks and stuff, and the contestants will be given instructions that they need to finish it since we’re a little concerned because it’s so unknown. In Kenya [season 3], we had armed guards everywhere so that if something did happen, we could take care of it. We’re not gonna have that because they’re telling us it is so remote and will probably be remote forever. But a gorilla could wander into camp.” (You mean, Joel from Micronesia?)

Season 17 marks another big change for Survivor in that it will be the first time the show has been shot in high definition. “Survivor is one of those shows that you want to see in HD,” says Probst, while noting that the scenery will look a lot more stunning than the stranded contestants, “People with bug bites are gonna look worse, people that don’t have great bodies are gonna look worse, and people who are really attractive are probably gonna look… worse.” And what about you, Jeff? “I went through every scenario: Is there any way I can wear makeup? Is there any way I could not shoot in the middle of the day? And the answers are all no. I’ve just come to terms with it.”

Survivor: Gabon—Earth’s Last Eden begins filming in late June and will air in September on CBS.

Gabon is the best location so far.

Jim Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 09:03 PM EST

The next series will be filmed in Samoa. People booked into Aggie Grey's, the biggest resort, have had their bookings cancelled over a period of 4 months and have been told it is because of Survivor.

This year just like all the rest is amazing. I have tried to find web sites with applications to be a possible contender on next years 2009 season. Can you point me in the right direction please. Thank you so much and I will keep watching. Matt Bailey

Hi There
here is our new domain name
http://ngondetour.com

Gabon is a destination to do at least once in a life time. Its Fauna and Flora will just drive mad. the contact with that wild life is amazing. It's beautiful!

I'm in love with my country, I'm sure you will be too, once you get there.

All the contestants are certainly having a tough time overthere.
In the forest we have a very very small bug that we call "Fourou". They are so small you hardly see them. They bite like mosquitos. they can REALLY drive you CRAZY , unless you put a repellant cream on your skin.

I'm wondering if the program allows contestant to use repellent cream during the show. If not , then really these bugs are gonna make them feel terrible.

These bugs don't like the sun. So they only appear early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
One way to overcome them is to stay close to a wood fire, smoke chase them away.
I can't wait to see the outcome of that 17th season of Survivors.

What do you all think of speculation that Survivor 18 will be in the Maldive Islands, near India? It's a beautiful place, trying hard to recover tourism economy from the tsunami that hit there. I hope it's true. Anyone hear speculating as well?

Carla D. Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

No, They have not finished Filming yet...They have about 6 more day's left, I think...But, do no hold me to that...lol (^_^)

Joe Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Have they finished filming?

Phil Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

They could have it in the US. Mojave, Rio Grande Valley, etc. And they don't call it Death Valley for nothing.

Cynthia Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

hi. i'm Cynthia from Gabon, currently studying in South Africa an big fan of the show. just wanna thank you guys for choosing my country for this 17th edition. i think gabon rocks and you won't regret it cause it's full of natural wonders. way to go Gabao!!!

Jo Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Hey Pete, I am an Aussie, immigrated to the States 13 years ago, got my passport a year ago. I just Fed Exed my application and tape, cross your fingers for me, lets hope the producers would like to put an Aussie in Gabon. As for the dangers, hippos, crocs, gorillas, the mossies, diseases, bring it on, us Aussies are tough buggers!

GnJedi Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

This is such an exciting time for Gabonese folks to make the country accessible to the world =))
In terms of safety, my belief is that there will be no problems ... but nature is nature; Gabon is not a TV set, the risks are real but help is also really there if needed. I also hope that a coalition against outrageous travelling cost will emerge from this experience as it is scandalous that such a beautiful country is not enough open to the nature world lovers. Each time I go to Gabon (haven't been in 7 years), I always stop by Lambarene and navigate the Ogooue to visit my village in the Lake Loguet. Beautiful birds, hippos, crocs, iguanes, monkeys ... must see! I pray to be able one day to build some nice bungalows and make the place more touristy =))

Joe Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Hi Christel,
Do you think the castaways will be safe?
Joe

Christel B Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Hi,
I've never really been into survivor. But someone told me it was going to Gabon so that sparked my interest.I live in the U.S. now but I am originally from Gabon. It's very beautiful. Beautiful towns, markets, restaurants, AMAZING white sand beaches and very hospitable people...The rain forest is so dense, most of it is basically non-populated. (A few villages here and there).I lived there up until I was 14 and go back every other year to visit family. But I actually have never been to the remote jungle. Which I hear is beautiful. Most people leave in the 3 major towns (Libreville, Port-Gentil, Franceville). Indeed, Gabon is outrageously expansive though, compared to other African countries, so get ready to spend some cash when in the city.

CarlaD Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

Thank you Susann for the new information, and the web-link...(^_^)

Very interesting...Especially about the Bug's, and the Disease'...WOW!!!

I sure hope that no one will catch any of them!

Susan Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

I just saw this on About.com. It has some information about Gabon and what conditions the contestants will face.

hi my name is marlow we are a tourism agency in GABON call ITINERIS GABON we got alot to offer if you interested check us out at WWW.itinerisgabon.com then send me e-mail for the prices hope to hear from you soon

Joe Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

Thanks, Mark. $2500 just to get there? Ouch!

mark schultz Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Joe:

Airfare to Gabon is about $2000 roundtrip from the east coast, if you're lucky. Try Royalairmoroc (Morrocan Airlines). The ticket on National to get from Libreville down to Mayumba will also cost at least a $500 USD. Gabon is one of the most expensive places on earth, so bring lots of money.

Joe Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I'd consider a visit, Jazz, assuming the cost is reasonable.

What's it like in Gabon?

Jazzmatazz Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 07:08 AM EST

Would you all be willing to come to Gabon After Survivor is over? Mayumba in the south of Gabon has the most beautiful beaches in the world. Great for surfers. I'll send y'all links to some great sites...USA + GABON = LOVE

Pete Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 06:17 AM EST

G'day guys, I am from Australia and have kept up with all the seasons, even though they don't show them over here anymore...i wish they would let an Aussie on because it would be my dream to go on survivor. Just one person from Australia wouldn't hurt, would it? :)

Just me Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Dwight, you said your son is part of Survivor's staff in Gabon. Please, do you know where I could find a list with all the team members? I know it might seem a little bit (more:)), but I've just met a wonderful guy saying he's working for Survivor and will be leaving for Gabon in two days. But I've lost his phone number, and he wil be in Paris only until Friday, so please, maybe I could have his full name, I could find his phone number...Google does miracles:)

thx a lot!

michael Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

SURVIVOR IS SOOO FAKE

Joe Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Thanks, Dwight. It should be cooler there because of the wind.

Jeff said that a hippo walked through camp. Maybe he was going surfing. :P

Dwight Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

Have heard that Base Camp is about 25km south of the equator, at the beach. This works out to be approximately S.Lat 13'30", and E.Long 9deg.18'16". Looks like dry season is arriving. With the exception of rain this Thursday & Friday, forecast calls for daily highs of 84 degrees with lows of 74 degrees, and lots of humidity.

Joe Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

I hope Jeff Probst makes videos of the base camp and The Ponderosa again.

It's interesting to hear about Gabon from people who've lived there and or have family there. I read this thread every day.

Carla D. Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Thank you so very very much for keeping us updated, Dwight... (*_*)

Dwight Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

Support staff has reportedly relocated to Base Camp, perhaps on an island. Hoping to get coordinates and details.

Carla D. Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Thank you Dwight, for the info...But, I would like to know a little more info. about your Son's, Staff postion...What I mean is, What does he do on the Survivor Staff? Is he an Castaway Double, or a Challenge Builder?, or an Camra Man? Thank You, And I sure hope that he and all of the people involved are kept Safe, while they are over there...And, May God Bless...(^_^)

GnJedi Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 06:35 AM EST

note: nice map ... just to say that the Bantu population is not a Pygmie tribe.
I f you are interested in musicologie ... might want to listen the polyphonic sounds from the Pygmies: http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&catalog_id=4035

GnJedi Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 06:27 AM EST

Awesome Dwight, keep us posted ... seems like this Survivor is already being a great discovery and challenge for the team on the ground ... with hippos tracks near the camp and more wild animals curious wild animals! You might need a local hunter on spot ... just to make sure no crazy "sanglier" jumps in the tents ahah ... The nature is beautiful ... bird lovers will be delighted, and we might see some gorillas, local buffalos ... but for sure all kinds of monkeys. Bonjour au village Abondessimba-Jerusalem du lac Loguet (off the Ogoue a couple of hours from Lambarene) ^_^

Dwight Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

My son is on the staff and arrived Libreville 5/18 and is now busy setting up for the filming. Has been staying in Nyonie' resort but expects to move to Base Camp this week, per phone call early this AM. A/C for cabins has arrived after some delay. Internet now up, although very slow. Last week, on a 1 1/2 hour drive (20 km) to probable Base Camp site, they saw 6 elephants (and got lost enroute). A couple of days ago, he ran from that site back to Nyonie', a challenging 20K run in the 85 degree heat. More reports soon. Posted 6/4 @9:30pm PDT.

James Hull Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

The map link was incorrect. Here is the corrected link: http://www.claycritters.com/map/s17/survivor_17_map.htm

I lived 6 years in Gabon. All my children and wife were born in Gabon. You can bet I'll be watching this season's Survivor.

Carla D. Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

If you go to, www.claycritters.com/map/s17/survivor_17__map.htm - You will be able to see approximately, where Survivor 17 Gabon will be filiming...Dan Bollinger, has a map of the area's...Like the Production Camp, The Tribes' Camp, and Challenges...

Carla D. Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

No Jazzmatazz, I am not part of Survivor or it's staff...I just like to research the new locations of Survivor, to get myself and other's informed about where they (Survivor) will be filming, and any & all information about it...But, Thank you anyway...(^_^)

Jazzmatazz Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

Carla D seems to be very well informed. Are you part of the survivor staff or something? Anyways, I thank you all for putting my country on the map. GOD BLESS GABON (It's the last Eden for sure)!!!
Big shout out to old Peace Corps volunteers and Residents.

aj Sat, May 24, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

Returning players are boring and its unfair to the new players. I always thouight Africa was a good season, a hard one, for food and shelter, unlike the way they are provided now. Get back to the real survivor

Carla D. Sat, May 24, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

From my understanding, Survivor Gabon will be filming in that "Wonga Wongue Presidental National Reserve" in Gabon Africa...

Michael Fri, May 23, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

I've been to Gabon and spent time in the jungle, and I can tell you, depending on where they go this may be one of the best locations yet. I have not watched the series in a couple of years but will this time around. I hope the bees are out, and it rains!

want to see some pictures check out

Thanks to all Survivor' staff for chosing Gabon...What about a "Rambo V" in my beloved jungle???

peggy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

we need people on the show who are not quitters they watch the show enough they should know how hard it is with the weather and the outdoors. mary really mad me mad said "i tried out 5 times" she finally get on and she quits, that just blows me away i have been trying out for 9 seasons now and still not going to give up.

Quincy Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

Oh yes, if you speak French which I do it is an added asset .

Quincy Mon, May 19, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

How can I get involved with this Survivor- Gabon—Earth’s Last Eden. My Mom is American and my Dad is Gabonese. Beautiful country, 80% forest., 800 km of water (Atlantic ocean) and a continuous sun, which has the equator going right through it. It's flag represents the country. Green for the (forest), Blue for the (water) and Yellow for the (sun). Please get me involved.

We need to have a fat chick survivor.People lose so much weight and gain so much strength.

Gabon RPCV's Sun, May 18, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

As returned peace corps volunteers we look forward to seeing Gabon receive some attention. It is a beautiful country with great people. Our lives are forever changed from the time we spent there. There are some things to watch out for: bot and filaria flies(both involve worms in your body, not good), army ants(legions of these guys clear whole villages for a day or two, they clean things up nicely though), mosquitos(the mosquito net is king, if not provided these survivors are toast), those surfing hippos(don't go too close, I was chased by one and it's no family day at the zoo), sharks(the coastal waters look nice but there are a LOT out there) and bush taxis(just don't do it). There are some BIG insects to see. I had to resort to Regab(beer) to fall asleep with the bugs that were clinging to the bottom of my mattress. Great things to look for are: cool birds(hornbills, blue plantain eater and african grey parrots), great food, all sorts of unusual tropical stuff. HAVE FUN survivors

Carla D. Sun, May 18, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

I am very pleased and interested in all of you that live, or have been to Gabon...I check here everyday, to see if anyone else has posted any new info. about Gabon Africa...I love all of the different places that Survivor goes to...And, I am interested in all of your stories, good and bad.So, thank you, for all of your insights... (^_^)

GABON is the country where i come from, and to know that survivor will try to survive there is so exciting to me!This is the first time American tv spectators will truly experience fear and stress felt by actors when these latter will face sacred items or step into secret forbid dooms.Though the country is blessed by God, Ozzy and all the teams must watch out, and no worse will come about. MBOLO(hello) to all the gabonese. Enjoy regabs, surivors!!

Mbolo to all =)) The way you would pronounce the country's name in English would be Ga-bonn like Bonn from Germany ;-) You might have notice that there is no e at the end of the country's name ... anyways!
As a Gaboneses citizen, living in the big ATL and a fan of survivor this is really exciting to see the country put on the spot light ... hope it will boost tourism and show more than vegetation ... it is going to be ruff ... careful with paludisme.

Jazzmatazz Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

That's cool for Gabon! The article makes it sound like it's on the moon somewhere, though. Well, the contestants certainly won't starve. There's food if they can hunt. And if they have the strength to walk, they may even be lucky enough to learn about Regab (Local beer).
By te way, it's GABON!!!!

Sheldon Pelletier Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Isnt it interesting!! Gabon is where people take Ibogaine a rite of passage root that has been Proven to Interrupt Addiction!! Hopefully this may bring some more awareness to this wonderful plant teacher!!
Google IBOGAINE !!!
Its not a Joke people just have not heard of it before. I see it work all the time.
Imagine the promotion for the TV Corp. or Survivor series if they integrated a plant that stops the addiction cycle cold. Every person in America is affected by addiction in one form or another.
Then they could call it Survivor: The Addiction Series

mark schultz Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Gabon is pronounced Ga-bone, like a dog bone. It is not pronounced Ga-bonn, as in Bonn, Germany. Probst is saying it correctly. I know, I've heard the locals say the word a million times.

Denis Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

Jeff is pronouncing the name incorrectly, although to be fair, it might be his attempt at french. He'd be better to say it as Gabonn.

I also spent several months in Gabon last year. Partly working in the jungle and in Port Gentil. I'm curious where this one will be situated and what they will encounter. From the look of the trailer, they plan on encountering a few different animals. It is a very agressive jungle. The insects and the snakes play for keeps like no other place. French is the main common language but the native languages are many and varied. Looking forward to watching this one.

Alan Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

Why does Jeff pronounce it Ga-bone? In English, don't you say Ga-bonn?

DaleBJ Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

I worked at the US Embassy in Gabon in 2005-2006. Friends still there say the Survivor crew is camped out in Nyonie. This is an area across the estuary from the capital Libreville. It is only accessible via boat so isolated and unspoiled. Search Flickr for Nyonie for pictures.

Tyler Lobb Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

GET SOME CANADIANS ON THE SHOW!!
not only would it increase viewers in Canada, you could even do something like Survivor Canadians VS Americans.
anyways im looking forward to the next season. and im hoping that Ozzy and James will get another shot at survivor, as should some other veterans like Ethan Zohn and Colby Donaldson and Yul Kwon.

Corran Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

They should have a season called Winners vs. Losers. Winners would be all the previous contestants who won versus the losers, which would be all the runners up who lost. Any excuse to bring back Stephanie is fine by me :)

Freek Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

They should make Survivor 18 in the middle of a city. Then they have to survive along the streets in The Netherlands or somewhere else.

Andy Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Survivor will never go to a cold location for one reason, ratings. Ratings will drop significantly if there were no swimsuits and hardly anyway differentitating one survivor with another (talking about the mandatory clothing they'd need to wear).
Secondly, I think that changing the way that the winner should be chosen (eg 'idol' or challenge) completly defeats what the previous 38 days of the game are about. Letting the audience decide, no offense, but I think is a terrible idea. You would get all the 'likeable' people kicked out because otherwise they'd win guarenteed at the end and also there would be no strategising because survivors would be scared to make a move in case the audience doesnt like it.

Martin Tue, May 13, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

I think that Survivor should be shot at least once in a Northern location because I think so far it has all happened in either hot or humid (sometimes both) locations, and it would probably be interesting to have a game up North where the climate and the conditions are completely different... Maybe Canada, or Russia would be good!

Ernie R Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

WoW!!! What a great idea and switch -up-- by changing how the winner of Survivor is chosen. I do believe we need to get rid of the jury and use them in a different way and have the viewers choose-hmmm like "Idol" maybe.
I know the producers are incredible and will find a way to change it up.

Marty Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

I think the survivors should play it out till the end last man standing or woman and then there would be a real survivor no jury they only vote for who they like not the true winner.

Adam Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

I think when they know that survivor is going to have its FINAL season i think they should make it as hard as possible. I think that they should have it in Antarctica, or somewhere where they really have to test the elements. HAHA!! I think that would be great!! Of course since Antarctica is SOOO FREAKIN COLD, they would shorten the number of days being there and make it a shorter show, but still it would be a wonderful way to end it. Also i think that for the last season it should be with all of the past winners!! It would be ULTIMATE SURVIVOR!! And the prize something like (Insert Money amount larger than a million here).

Haley Stone Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

I lived in Gabon from 2002-2004 in a town called Koula-Moutou. I saw gorillas, hippoes, chimpanzees, monkeys, strange birds, snakes, huge mosiquitos, and spiders the size of your hand. We washed clothes by hand, ate taro leaves, atangas, and the beloved baton de manioc, and of course drank lots of Regab (brewed in Gabon). The Gabonese and West Africans are quite friendly towards Americans, mais j'espere que vous parlez bien le francais, parce que le gabonais ne parlent pas l'anglais. I hope the Survivors will have to endure a bush taxi ride...BRUTAL!

mark schultz Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

I lived in Gabon for 12 years. The humidity and the bug factor are going to make this the most difficult location ever. This time they really are going to be survivors, even the staff. Oh, I forgot to mention snakes like the Green Mamba-there is no anti-venom yet invented. Someone may die in this next episode. Get ready for the real survivor.

JOHN Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Stop messing with the format, no wonder the ratings were the lowest ever,it's not fair to bring back losers, they lost, give new faces a chance, forget about fans and faves or that stupid race show, go back to the original formula..please

space ritual Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

to bad the show is only open to contestants who are American citizens

1RiehlHotT Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I dont know if you remember s.king... but Parv was the only one who wouldn't vote for Amanda... watch a little closer next time sunshine...

s.king Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

I have been a devoted Fan from the beginning but after watching that manipulative, lying, little witch walk with the million, I'm done. Even if Amanda was a bit too sweet to be for real, she did not lie and use people. Didn't the jury hear how she didn't know about the plot to out Ozzy? If nothing else, she was truthful. And why didn't anyone mention how Pavorti tried to get rid of Amanda, back when she found the idol? Wow...how quickly the jury forgets. Being a liar and user does not make someone a good game player, only a good PLAYER. I'd loved to see Ozzy get another chance..... is there anyway the fans can vote for another big winner, like we did with Rufus? How about an all time reunion, with a couple hour update on what all the past players are doing?

PhilGood Mon, May 12, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

I used to live in Gabon from 1977 to 1982, and things have changed, but I am curious to see how they keep the whole thing under cover. Gabon is one of the richest country in Africa, if not the richest. Oil, and minerals are its wealth. It is full of crazy bugs, and VERY lush in vegetation. I always wanted to go back to see what it's like now in Libreville. Gabonese people are very friendly, but it is a different world over there.
Jeff, any chance I could help? How's you French? I'm also a video editor! ;-)

Canadian girl Mon, May 12, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I think that it would be the ultimate challange to pick a location that is cold as opposed to tropical. Put them in the snow with food and they can build an igloo!

EW, please post transcripts of the videos with the booted contestants next season. My connection isn't good enough at home, and I'm not allowed to watch the videos at work, but I would like to hear what these guys have to say. So transcripts, please!

Last time they shot in Africa it had low ratings and I thought they weren't going back! Jeff blamed the lack of scenery and water/ocean as a back drop.

Thank goodness they are going high-def next season. I just got a new hi-def set and I was really looking forward to Survivor in HD.

have you ever thought about having a survivor show where it is just teenagers. i think that is would be great if you did this. is would also be neat to see how their mind works.
