Idol Jason Castro: "ready to go home"?

May 1, 2008, 03:37 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: American Idol, Television, TV Biz

He made it through Paulagate 2008, but is American Idol's Jason Castro ready to call it quits? EW's Jessica Shaw was on the scene as the Idols rehearsed for Neil Diamond week (read her "Why Song Selection Matters" feature here) and spoke with Castro on Monday afternoon: "I'll get around to practicing," he promised her, after noting that his brother and a friend had visited over the weekend and that his Saturday meeting with Diamond had gone "really bad" because he didn't yet know his songs. "What happens happens. I'll sing and if people like it, they like it. And if they don't, they don't. I'm kind of ready to go home."

You're kind of ready to walk off America's biggest stage???

"It's been overwhelming," Castro continued. "I got 150 balloons yesterday delivered to the studio because people heard I was sick last week. That's cool, but that's just weird."

thp1723 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

So why not run this "story" on Monday or Tuesday?

curlysue2009 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Sorry...this story does not sound very credible.

ouch. Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

dude just sounds plain ungrateful for what he's been given. to be honest, it's kinda showed in his recent performances.

Jonathan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I believe it.
But it's dissapointing, because I've been hoping that his almost careless attitude was not as it seemed.

Rita Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

There are people who are overwhelmed by fame. He's a really taleneted artist and he'll do awesome next week! He has to beat syesha and come i #3! Maybe he was just stressed out come on Jessica give him some credit...

Not a Fan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Many of these contestants want off this show. Good for Jason for admitting it!

utidolfan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

If he's ready to go home, let him go. He acts as though he could care less, as opposed to Brook, who you could tell really wanted to be there and was devestated by leaving. His hearts not in it! He should stick to the local open mic nights at coffee bars.

Opal Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

He sounds sane, and the last line here sounds bitter and rude.

Leila Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

I feel bad for the girls that organized the balloon delivery... They were so excited. That statement might lose him some fans.

Megan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I have no doubt in my mind that the "journalist" took Jason's words totally out of context. Not to mention this "story" is horribly written and not credible in any way. Jason is there to win and that's that.

castrofied Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

i'm a huge fan of jason - but i think he'll be more successful outside of the AI machine. i stopped voting a couple weeks ago, but will be definitely buying his first album!

ann Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

OH BULL SH!!!T NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO GET JASONS FANS TO GET MAD AT HIM AND STOP VOTING - SORRY - NOT WORKING

NikkiB Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I'm sure if you asked them all of the finalist are kinda ready to go home. It must be a shock to suddenly be in the media spotlight. So EW what's up with the hit job?

Me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Do you like to spin much?? You took all of that out of context and you know it.

Angela Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I really think these comments were spent so this article could be read as damaging to him! Since when do you join forces with American Idol judges and producers? Also, why not post this on Monday or Tuesday instead of waiting for Thursday?? That makes no sense. Also, if I am correct he received the balloons last week not on Sunday so...I find this not to be very credible. Sorry.

Chris Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

this article is a crock. Unless I hear and see him say those words myself, I don't buy it. I know Jason comes off a ambivalent at times, but he's not a stupid as people try to make him out to be.

Marie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Jason's comments show a lack of respect for his fans, and the show that he SIGNED UP for.

Becky Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

And this is yet further evidence as to why Jason should go home...even he says HE doesn't want to be there.

Leila Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I think Jason has always been ambivalent about being in the show. He doesn't want to lose, he's grateful for the opportunity, but at the same time he hates being away from the rest of the world and having to do things that are not natural to him. He's always made it clear from the moment he said "I don't like to do all the other stuff (photo shoots, interviews)", and recently, that he feels very lonely.

Violet Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I call Bull___t on this article, because the Idols are not permitted to speak directly to the press while on the show. I think it's made up. I thought EW had more integrity than this.

Violet Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Marie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Judging from the relieved look and smiles on his face last night after being called to safety, I'm confident in saying that this article is a joke. Go Jason!!

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

totally dont buy this at all. i am sure this was taken way out on content. we know for a fact that jason was over whelmed by the balloons he recieved last week and even took pictures of them for us to see. i am also sure his statement about going home referred to being homesick and missing his friends and family, not that he doesnt want to be on the show anymore. did you not see how happy he was last night to have gotten through? i dont understand why everyone is suddenly trying to make his fans turn on him. not gonna happen.

GetALife Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Has Fox made some kind of deal with EW to run a smear campaign against Jason? Lately, it seems the media has been against Jason. I don't really understand why they are so against him winning. Archie will be another Clay Aiken (nice voice..but people will get tired of him), David Cook (has a better chance, but he will blend in with all the other thousands of rockers in the music industry), Syesha (better off on Broadway). Jason would be the most profitable for them.

PENNY Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

JESSICA SHAW IS A DAVID A LOVER - LOOK HOW SCARED THEY MUST BE. TELLING STORIES LIKE THIS. DIDNT WORK - THE FANS DONT BELIEVE THIS AT ALL. JUST ANOTHER PLOT TO UNLOAD THE CONTESTANT THAT AI DOES NOT WANT AFTER WHAT PAULA DID TO HIM ON TUES

Avalon Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

His comments disgust me because other talented performers, like Michael and Carly, who really wanted to be there, are gone, and someone who could care less is still there.

erinavery Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Well...I'm sure it's out of context but of course it's weird. I can't imagine fame ever NOT feeling weird and would be more worried about someone who said it didn't. And the way the judge treat him is ridiculous...who are they anyway?? I'm pretty sure the people who love Jason's sound don't like a whole lot of music that those judges do...big deal....also he's in it for the music not the glory of fame...of course all the "NOT" music stuff is weird for him...just keep on doin what you do babe...we like it even if they don't.

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

What a poorly written article, no doubt taken out of context. We know it's a lie. Until we hear it from a reliable source, we're not buying it!

Lara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

i hope he really is ready to go home, because this is going to upset his fans (as it should). wow.

Alexandra Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

wow! Jason's fans are starting to seem crazy!

tj Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Jason should have been gone along time ago. Every song sounds the same. Really bad. Boring, boring.....

Katherine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Free Jason! Send him home!

Ilene Cranmer Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

You should be ashamed of yourself. It's obvious you have an agenda, just like the producers of AI. Try telling the whole story next time!! Jason's fans love him. Stop trying to spin your story in a bad light. Shame on you!

Rose Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

He knows the judges are biased against him and the producers will send him home, so I can see why he doesn't care. The judges are too busy praising Cook for every performance in a row that sounds the same.

I don't blame him at all!

Jane Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

This "article" is complete BS.

Tamryn Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I, for one, am really getting tired of Jason's fans screaming conspiracy over everything. Jason himself made these comments to EW's reporter. You can't blame American Idol for it.

I Love Jason Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

and I don't believe a word of this bs. What exactly is the point of putting this out NOW? This doesn't sound like Jason at all, and the fact that he was so obviously happy at being safe last night gives the lie to this ridiculous attempt at character assassination.

Elliot Schehr Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

Aside from everything else, Jason is the biggest no talent this year on AI. If this was truly a singing contest and not a popularity contest, he would have been gone long ago. He should have been booted off before the Cook girl.

Gretchen Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

He's horrible. He deserves to get voted off now. Ugh. What a waste of a spot for someone who WANTS to be there!

Marc Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

EW doesn't need to run a smear campaign. The public just needs to start realizing that Jason is nothing more than a campfire, sing-along artist. He should have gone home a long time ago...

castrofied Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

eliot... you either 'get' jason or you don't. he doesn't need to have a power vocal to appeal to a large audience. he's very talented. but i agree with katherine - FREE JASON!

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

I call BS, and I'm not even a Jason fan. But I'm pretty sure contestants aren't allowed to speak to reporters until AFTER the show. And why wait three days to break the story if she spoke to him on Monday? This story has more holes than Swiss Cheese, if you'll pardon the cliche.

Pete Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

I'm not a Jason fan or a fan of Idol, but I have to say...DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ" Real nice trying to break this young man's spirit and the spirit of his fans.

To Avalon Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

You really can't believe that Jason would say these things, can you? His comments disgust you?? C'mon, you can't be so gullible that you believe he would be that stupid to say those things maliciously. He's been nothing but classy since his start on AI and this article was written totally out of context. Both you and Mandi Bierly, the inexcusable writer of this article, must be David A fans.

Jane Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

This is a smear campaign, plain and simple. And it's disgusting. I would not believe this BS for a second.

Clarissa Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

Why are Jason's fans attacking the messenger. EW has always been supportive of Jason. Just read Michael Slezak's articles. It's clear jason wants to go home and to be left alone by some of his loony fans.

Gretchen Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

LIES I TELL YOU, LIES!

rereader Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

This does not sound very credible. Carly Smithson, in a radio interview just this past Tues. (Apr. 29) (http://star94.com/shows/mm_index.cfm?show=mm), says he "practices his butt off", and she's been around him for months now, she would know.

Elliot Schehr Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Castrofied - you are correct about either getting him or not but my friend you can't really believe he can sing. And I'm not just talking about his lack of vocal range. He just cannot sing!!!

To Mandi Bearly-writer of this unbelievable trash Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Do you really think we are that stupid?? First the AI producers try to insult our intelligence last night, then this blatant joke of a story. What next, an article about how his dreamy blue eyes are really contact lenses and his dreads fake?? Amazing.

I Love Jason Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Furthermore, why is this being written and posted by Mandi Bierly, when the remarks were supposedly made to Jessica Shaw? Why would Shaw allow herself to be scooped this way? And why is EW allowing HEARSAY to be posted on their site? Absolutley bogus.

yeah, and i saw a pig flying the other day... Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

I don't buy it. Either the comments are completely fabricated or were taken entirely out of context. Look at that boy's face in footage from the results show after he was declared safe...you can't tell me he's not in it to win it. This is insulting, unfair to Jason (I don't see articles casting any of the other idols in a negative light...), and should be redacted immediately.

Ben Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Free Sanjaya-Jason!!

Samantha Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

This article has about as much credibility as CBS news and Dan Rather.

anti-clueless Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

This article looks like a plant from AI.

Alicia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

The worst thing about American Idol is the way some fans think of these contestants as some kind of gods. I'm sure the aticle is true, and I don't blame Jason for being freaked out by his stalker/fans.

Theresa Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Just makes me want to vote for him more and more...and rest be sure, I will.

Garbage Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

You call this journalism? What an awful article. It is not only poorly written, it is malicious. Are you trying to break everyone's spirits? A poster made a good point--why write the article on Thursday if the interview was on Monday?

Justin Castilloj Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Girls are just voting until their thumbs get numb. That's what I felt about David Archuleta since his Top 24 debut.
I really wish that the girls were nice enough to respect his wishes after singing "Memory" but didn't. Then again, he didn't want to sing it again. I wonder why he hasn't pulled a Mario Vasquez by now, to be frank.

Rosemarie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Oh this is rich! Jason's fans blaming AI for comments HE made to a reporter. Get a grip. You nuts are scaring the poor kid to death!

theresa Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

The contestants CANNOT give interviews at taht time -- and a reporter is going to keep that to herself for 3 days Right-get real

jj Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

the stuff about him being ungrateful is silly. he's a kid. he thought he'd try something new. it turned into something he hadn't pictured as a possibility. i'm happy to hear he has the perspective he had a mere few weeks ago when he was a 'normal' person instead of being swept away by insular reality show fake stardom nonsense.

doing as well as you can and hoping for the best is fair enough, but i for one am neither surprised nor disappointed at his comments. he's lucky to have the sense of self to be centered amidst all this hoo-ha.

Lisa James Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

"Either the comments are completely fabricated or were taken entirely out of context."

I'd say taken out of context. I bet the "it's overwhelming" statement had to do with fan support, because he immediately followed that with receiving the balloons.

Nice try, Jessica. Did you get some payola for publishing this?

To Justin Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I'm not a girl. I'm a professional in my 30's who votes for Castro because I LIKE HIS SINGING. get it??

Some edit Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Interesting how you've already edited this. Wonder why, and wonder what else you left out of Jason's actual quote? "I'm honored, it's just so new to me"? And if he said this Monday, why wait till now to "expose" it? "Hmm" (now edited) indeed.

Jasmine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Yes, Jason is another Sanjaya, but his fans are like the Claymates, disturbingly so.

2cents Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

How can you not believe this? Have you heard and seen him the last few weeks - he clearly does not want to be there. No interest in learning the songs - or learn about the songs (i.e. Memory was sung by a cat!).

I think he is totally disrespectful to the mentors for not doing a little research.

Put the bong away for a few weeks and put in your best effort - or bow out.

To Jasmine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Not that I'm an Aiken fan but I do believe his fans are what got him as far as he got. While I may not be a rocket scientist, I do think that it's probably a good thing to have a lot of fans-especially ones that rally behind you. Sorry to state the obvious, but it appears it had to be done. As you just don't get it.

paisley quinn Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

NICE TRY - Trying to get his fans upset -- not going to work -- BELIEVE ME, we know he wants to be there. Way to go, Jessica Shaw (a Cook fan, perhaps?) and Mandi Berly -- let's spread some rumors and see if his fans leave him....ummmmm...not going to happen.

WTF?! Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Oh please! Sanjaya and Jason should not even be used in the same sentence. Have you even listened to Jason's studio recordings on Itunes/Youtube?

fedup Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

This guy gives the show and the performers with talent a bad name. I will not watch anymore because he is still there. He has no business being there and will probably only sing in coffee houses after the show.

To Paisley Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

good theory. unless this joke of a writer is actually a Jason fan and is trying to pull some reverse psychology on his fans in a attempt to get him more votes. Regardless, I will vote for Jason and Jason only until his participation in this joke of a contest is over.

I Love Jason Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

Jason didn't want to sing "Memory" again last week because it would have meant he was going home, you idiots!Further proof that this article is nothing more than a hatchet job. Never mind that the kids aren't allowed to talk to the press until their run on AI is over!

MandyK Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

Good grief lay off Jason. They've been doing this grueling show with little to no time off for two months now. So Jason isn't going to die if he gets voted off...thank God he has some perspective. And that's part of what makes him so likeable. Face it, it has to be weird to have strangers sending you gifts like 150 balloons.

ksnyders Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

STUPID! You think Jason's fans buy this crapola?!

Dave J Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

It sounds like Jason is being very honest about being overwhelmed by the spotlight. Having 2 or 3 people send you balloons when you're sick is really nice and comforting. Having 150 balloons sent to you because someone you never met heard you were sick can be too much.

There's a reason why some famous people are drug or alcohol abusers - the attention is very nice, but it can also overload your circuits.

To 2cents Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Did YOU see him last night? Did you SEE how happy he was to be safe? he didn't stop smiling all night. He was animated and so obviously happy...he even gave the rock n roll salute! You don't know what you're talking about and you have no clue as to what Jason feels or thinks, so clam up already.

Sara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

As a Jason fanatic, I am thrilled to see readers (Castro fans or not) run to his defense. Whether you like his sound or not, he is a likeable guy and "low-blow" articles like this a truly trasparent.

Sara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

As a Jason fanatic, I am thrilled to see readers (Castro fans or not) run to his defense. Whether you like his sound or not, he is a likeable guy and "low-blow" articles like this are truly trasparent.

To TO Jasmine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I'm not a rocket scientist either, but I know when fans have crossed the line into the "crazy, scary, zone", and apparently Jason does too.

BS Detector Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

What a bunch of bs this is! It is a fact that the idols are not allowed to give interviews until they are voted off. But thanks for firing up his fans to vote even more!

Stacey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

WHAT THE HELL. Brooke would have loved to have another chance. This should have been reported earlier. And anyone, anyone could have seen on his face he's ready to go home. He refuses to know the songs before meeting with the mentors, phones it in. Whether he was sick last week. Inexcusable to say you don't mind if you go home. Brooke, Carly, Kristy, even Michael would love to been a few weeks from a possible record contract.

Damn, he loses any respect I have for him.

Kenneth Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Aw, Jason's no Sanjaya! Sanjaya was better. Jason reminds me more of Jar Jar Binks!

CA bound Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I wish all of Jason's fans would rent a mid-sized bus, get him off the show, head to the beach and all sing campfire songs.

Casey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I'm just ready for Jason to go home as he has bored me one too many times. He's cute and all but no way any American Idol. He's simply too goofy and not knowing of Cats was simply ridiculous. Michael, Carly and Brooke were a thousand times better and more but it's nothing but a popularity contest and that's not fair to those with true talent. This was my first AI experience and my last.

Justin Castilloj Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Maybe he was really looking forward to "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" night which is strange for someone unfamiliar with Neil Diamond. P.S. Does anyone know what Brooke White would have sung for Top 4? Maybe they did her a favor.

Carly fan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I hate to tell you people, but your idol Jason sucks bigtime!

Will be happy to see him go next week.

Justin Castillo Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

Casey, if I were you I would have voted endlessly. I know the judges themselves have said that anybody can go home at any time, but if talent should overpower popularity, than all it takes is dialing and redialing whatever it takes. Can you download dial idol?

Deborah Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

As a Michael John's fan I have to say I am really disappointed in Jason's comments. I wish he had just bowed out weeks ago, so someone who really wanted to be there could have a chance (like Michael, Carly, Brooke, or even Kristy).

Leila Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

I don't think the article is BS, but of course the quotes are being exploited out of context. Jason is not very media savvy and he says whatever is going through his mind. However what he says goes more in the lines of Archuleta saying that he gets freaked out by the screaming fans (see his official Idol Top 5 interview), and he was also freaked by the girls kissing him on state a couple weeks ago. It's not like they're ungrateful, they're just not used to the sudden fame. All those idols are stoked to be where they are, but you cant' blame them for being sick and tired of all the obligations and the artificial life they're leading right now.

Marcia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Does anyone over 16 really vote for Jdason??? He is cute and can sing but he is definitely not the next American Idol in my book. Everyone I know agrees if you took all the phones away on Tuesday night from the 12 thru 16 crowd he would have been gone before. Shades of Sanjaya!!!

To CA bound Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

by the look of all of these pro Jason responses and stemming from the outrage from the Jason fans from the Paulagate scandal, you're going to need more than one mid-size bus

Sandra Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

Who thought it was a good idea to send cars full of baloons to a guy? No wonder Jason is scared!

Casey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

Sorry Justin as I figured out the voting process just within the last couple of weeks but it costs me for each message but I have voted for David C, David A and Syesha! If there is any other way to vote then I'll be glad to do it so many times more for those three. I cannot imagine some people saying they've voted hundreds of times. Wow!

Bri Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

WOW. This is horrible journalism. First, why isn't the person who heard the "quotes" writing the article? Second, it's a known fact the Idols aren't allowed to give interviews until after they get the boot so even if Jason was speaking to this lady, he definitely did not think he was on the record. Third, it is clear that some of these quotes are taken out of context and meant to fire up fans of people who have been voted off to hate Jason even more. I thought EW was above this and I can't believe they would stand behind this.

To Marcia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

I'm 38. I have a good job. I have a great house. I have a boyfriend. I have lots of friends. I vote for Jason.

Emily Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

The best thing Jason's fans can do is leave the poor guy alone, and see a shrink for their crazy stalking junk!

Anon Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I don't blame him though. I feel sorry for the contestants. It has to be difficult emotionally and psychologically. You practice your heart out - only to hear Simon say you're horrible. This year's idol is particularly annoying as it seems more like a popularity contest than a singing contest. Imagine how you would have felt if you were Syesha or Carly who performed the best one night and were the bottom two the next night. I'll be ready to go home....

rawk Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

To the author: It's so obvious you're just trying to turn his fans against him. What kind of person are you? How can you say these things that we all know Jason would never say? His fans know better! You know about karma, right?

ToTo Marcia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Well, 1 out of 100,000 isn't bad.

Jane Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

So this "article" is based on what one reporter told another reporter someone else said? And we don't even get the questions that his comments are supposed to be responses for? Don't believe a word of it.

tara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

The stalker fans that keep voting for Jason even though he wants to go home, according to his own words, are just showing that they don't care about Jason, just their own freaky "needs".

Not buying it Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Wait. So you're writing an article based on what another reporter said, even though that original reporter never actually broke the news to the media? Wow, I'm not sure where you get your journalism degree from, but clearly you need to go back. Until Jessica Shaw herself puts up her own article with the quotes IN CONTEXT, I'm just going to go ahead and assume that this is yet another pathetic ploy to get people interested in something completely unnewsworthy.

Lint_Licker Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I see the Castro fantards are in denial but think about it. What the hell does EW have to gain by posting this? Is there a massive media conspiracy against Dreadhead? "Has Fox made some kind of deal with EW to run a smear campaign against Jason?" Are you listening to yourself? How idiotic does that soung. "A hitjob on Castro?" LOL How people this stupid can muster enough brain cells to get online and write that kind of paranoid delusional bull is beyond me. I applaud Jason for his honesty in standing up against the AI machine. I don't blame him one bit for wanting to leave. Hopefully he'll get a chance to make a record and play music his way. Just stay away from the fantards, look what they did to Clay Aiken.

Kathrine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I believe it. He's had months to get used to this. Sure it's overewhelming, I understand that. And as it goes down the stretch. But the last few weeks, I have gotten the impression that he's wishing to go home. This sucks that you couldn't have reported this before now, so fans could have known before the voted to save him. You have to want this, and if you kinda want to home. You don't!

To Marcia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

While it's been a long time since I've took a stats class, I do believe there's more than one 20 year + person voting for Jason. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are a lot more.

Callie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

I'm very sad right now. I believe Jason said it because it fits with his admitted lack of preparation. I was a fan but no more!!!!

ANTM Freak Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Wow...people actually believe Idol paid EW.com to post that article? How pathetic. LOL Why bother even replying? And yes, 150 balloons is weird and stupid. What the hell is he supposed to do with all those balloons? That money would have been better used to donate to his favorite charity or something to that effect.

M Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Snip-snip & Spin

rhonda Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Attention Jason's psycho, stalking, balloon toting fans: Leave the poor guy alone!!

JDub Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Jason is horrible. He has no talent and it looks like he has hit the joint one too many times. Johns and Carly were way better than him. This is nothing more than a popularity contest. No way Jason takes out Syesha. I can believe he made this comment because he looks like he does not even care to be there. This is the same way with Amanda, she did not care either.

Jackie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

The idols aren't allowed to talk to the press until they are voted off. This is just part of their smear campaign to get Jason kicked off. He obviously must be a real threat to their David2 finale they had all planned out.

to Callie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

you sound very naive if you believe this article. Continue loving Jason like any loyal fan would do. the average reader, fan or not, can see through the lack of integrity in this article.

Alberto Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Jason Castro, as i'm sure all the contestants, are doing all they can to win (singing thier hearts off). The last two weeks have been pretty darn hard to come up with really good songs...last week it was that "composer guy" then this week it was Neil Diamond?, who sings great, but the contestants are pretty young and should be given better, and more up-beat songs to pick from. Anyway the article is Bull@#$%, and Castro just needs to keep on going for it

Joan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Man, the conspiracy theories put forth by Jason's fans are really getting out of hand! It's pretty simple: Jason is scared of you and wants to go home.

btw Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Interesting to see how shallow people's lives have become. To fanatically defend someone because they think they know him and how he feels and what he is thinking. The truth is they know NOTHING about him, never will and are just trying to live their lives vicariously through someone they are infatuated with and have no business making music related talent decisions.

ANTM Freak Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

"The idols aren't allowed to talk to the press until they are voted off." Maybe Castro decided "To hell with that" too. Honestly, I don't know if the article is true or not, but to hear some of these fans swear up and down that he'd never say that, and that the article is a lie, is truly frightening. You all need to get away from the computer and join the real world.

lflynn Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Wow! I didn't know that EW was in the AI spin machine's pocket. How disappointing. Where's Michael Slezak?
I also don't believe the contestants still in the running are allowed to give interviews. Why is AI so scared of this kid? He is being bashed on every media outlet AI can get their unethical little hands on. It's been going on since before IGB week. His vote count must be really high and threatening David A or something. After what Paula did the other night, Simon & Randy had the gall to continue to bash Jason after the result which aired today on the LA fox am show. The producers have done everything possible to get this kid voted off--its crazy. TPTB edit him to look foolish every chance they get. ALW result show--was a complete bashing of Jason for practically the entire hour. Jason was even made to stand next to Carly when she was going to be put in the bottom two--to make it look like he was somehow responsible.
Nigel L even said Jason should go home in the press. Unreal!

To Alberto Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Typical Jason fan. He has never sung his heart out because he doesn't have it in him. And by the way, that "composer guy", Andrew Lloyd Weber, is one of the best musical minds of this generation and if you had half a musical mind, you might remember his name.

seahawks08 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Don't buy this article at all and I think its sad to do him this way. This Jason Castro fan is not buying it and I hope he does extra well this week to proove otherwise and I thought EW was a huge fan of Jason and I am very disappointed you would go to this trouble to bad mouth such a good person. I do not believe he said these things. Not buying this for one moment.

A Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

scared....? if Castro was scared, he would've never even auditioned. Top 4! whether he wins or not he'll be signed by someone....so all this talk for nothing guys.

Rachel Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Nope, not buying this, sorry. Seeing is believing, and Jason's huge ear to ear smile and rocker sign when he was sent to safety demonstrates that he does want to be there. Jason sounded fantastic during Crackling Rosie, and looked happy and confident, in spite of paulagate. Go Jason!

Melanie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Wow! American Idol brings out the worst in these crazed shut-ins who obsess over a contestant and can't face the fact that Jason is frightened by their weirdness.

Lint_Licker Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Hey geniuses, EW has had Idol cover stories in the past with contestants still in the running. Here's one from Season 6: ew.com/ew/article/0,,20034499_3,00.html

So stop lying about contestants not allowed to talk to the press.

vicki Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Not buying these things about Jason at all. I believe he is there to win and be the best he can be. I thought EW was a huge fan of Jason and I am so disappointed in you for printing this garbage. I hope he prooves everybody wrong who is dogging him out. He is a good person and does not deserve this. This Jason fan is not buying this.

Lint_Licker Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Of course you don't vicki, cause you're a freak.

Jane Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

As someone who likes Jason I think it would have been better for him to go home a couple of weeks ago. He is now being compared to Sanjaya which is VERY harmful to his future career.

Kim Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

The guy sounds tired and overwhelmed and I don't blame him for that one bit. He probably needs to learn to be a little more grateful to the fans who have helped get him this far though. At least publicly.

Jean Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

I am outraged that you would print this garbage about Jason, I thought EW would be the last to try and plot with AI on this. Jason fan to the end. I hope he prooves everybody wrong.

This is funny Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

This is about as true as Paula trying to pass off her harsh comments about Jason losing his charm and not fighting hard enough were really meant for Cook. Jason fans are fired up and adding new fans daily. Jason will upset a Davids finale for sure.

A Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

you're on the computer also (ANTM Freak)....

corey49 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

this strikes me as one of those stories taken out of context and edited to make you dislike him.if he wanted to go home why is he so happy when told he was safe last nite.david a. was the one that looked like "wtf i'm still in it."jason strikes me as one of those people who can't lie or bs. and told the truth about being tired and weirded out by all the attention. he's a breath of fresh air in my opinion. all the others are so calculating and have these strategies for their careers, including brooke. have you heard the expression crazy like a fox.shame on you jessica for printing this now.

Michelle Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Ouch. Think some fangirls went psychobitch after he revealed last week he has a girlfriend?

I doubt this article is totally made up. I would be careful to see if the statements might be out of context.

But to be honest, Jason hasn't been acting like he's been taking the competition seriously, for a few weeks now.

jasonfan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I don't buy this for a second. If Jason wanted to go home, he would. I think something was spun or taken out of context. Did you see his face when he was safe?! He was THRILLED to be on Idol another week.

Alicia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Are the conspiracy nuts the same ones who think Elvis is still alive? Yeah, that's the ticket. Elvis is alive and he wants you to vote for Jason and send him truckloads of baloons.

ANN Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

What Ew has to gain on posting this story is exactly what they are getting - a gazillion hits. This is untrue = contestants dont get interviewed until after their butts are kicked off and Jason wants to stay there. They are just trying to move the story off of Paula

Me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Carly said in her exit interviews that Jason works his butt off rehearsing. I believe her, not this drivel.

Rebecca Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Not buying this. I am a huge fan of Jason and I can not believe EW would participate in this nonsense. This is just a plot to get him off the show. Jason is Jason do not compare him to anyone else.

coconutz Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Please delete this bullshit and misinformation!

Didn't you watch the results show? You can see how elated and victorious he looked sitting pretty on the couch!

Congrats to Jason for hanging in there! I'm sure this is all surreal for him, but he is loving it! I've no doubt.

And I've no doubt that he will want to reward his fan base with more songs in the key of Jason.

All the contestants are overwhelmed and tired, let's not take it out of context and let's not buy into the smear campaign against Jason. His fans know that he is the real deal.

If you buy and listen to the recording of Forever in Blue Jeans, you can see that Jason tried to keep it simple and true to the song. Like he *always* does. I loved the studio version.

Cindy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Not buying this about my Jason, sorry. I will stand by him to the end and yes he deserves to be where he is.

Jason fan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Give me a break. I know for a fact from someone close to Jason that he loved the balloons. He works very hard according to Carly in her interview. He definitely wants to be there. Just look at how happy he was when he was declared safe!

Me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

On the balloons, he said "COOL but weird"--he meant he's surprised that people would do that. I read that at he's surprised at the attention. Doesn't mean that's BAD surprise.

blaine Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

I am a huge fan and do not believe the media unless I heard it straight from that person. Everybody needs to leave the great, talented Jason alone.

ann Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Yes, Jason does want to go home and that is what he said but it was taken out of context, he wants to make it to the week when they are paired down to 3 and each gets to go to "home" for the homecoming that they always do on that week. How lame, good try but not working for anyone let alone only Jason fans

corey49 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

oh, maybe jason is kinda ready to go home because he knows the judges and producers don't want him to win this thing.this was before tues. nites paulagate, but last week with ALW they constantly humiliated him with the cats comments and edit his interviews to make him look ridiculous.how would you like to stand up there every week and be told "i just didn't like it" by randy i'd be ready to go home too. and bringing him out last every week even when he's safe to make it look like he's not getting votes and letting squirm back stage for an hour.poor kid.

IslandLoli Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Jason does seem to be the target to get rid of... maybe in the way of upsetting the David's... Randy just "never got him" (poor Randy), Paula unnerved him for his second song and they sure do play favorites with the David's, Brooke and now Syesha.

rocknwrite Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Um, I thought contestants couldn't speak to the press until after they were off the show. Another try to distract viewers from the Paula mess?

PENNY Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Jason wouldnt say - oh my, I am so overwhelmed, either. He would put it something like, this is crazy - EW - smart move though - you got even me posting a comment here

disgusted Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

What you see is what you get with Jason. (How refreshing - unlike a lot of what is coming out of AI!) Check this link out!

I Vote For The Worst Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

You fantards are just pathetic. Don't be all up in arms because you've failed to grasp the fact that recieving masses of balloons from people you don't know is creepy. I'm glad Castro said that because it shows you kiddies that your very own demi-god thinks doesn't care for your obsessing.Seriously, you're starting to get worst than Claymates.

ann Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Lets tell Jason, I dont like your performance, even before you sing. Wow - what AI wont do to get their little Dave to safety

LOL Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Who is actually gonna believe this spin? Jason was obviously elated on results night! Go watch it on you tube and see for yourself.

sebastian Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

THIS IS SUCH A HUGE LIE. FOR STARTERS THEY CANNOT TALK TO THE PRESS ANYWAY AND SECOND YOU COULD TELL HE WAS SO HAPPY HE WAS SAFE. I THINK HE IS A VERY TALENTED PERSON AND I HOPE HE WINS NOW BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT ALL OF YOU DESERVE WHO BAD MOUNTHED HIM. DO YALL EVER MENTION THAT DAVID A. ALWAYS FORGETS HIS LYRICS. DID HE DO THAT TO GO HOME? YOUR ONLY UPSETTING ME AND ALL THE OTHER JASON FANS TO PUSH EVEN HARDER FOR HIM . GO JASON.

julie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I think Jason needs to go home because he has a weak voice and he was looking arrogant, he should have gone last night

DreadLockBoy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

he has got to go! nothing but a popularity contest. why are you allowed to dial as many times as you want? American Idol is a joke!

ann Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Jasons fans are not little kiddies, little kiddies do not have the resources or the dedication to put a good contestant thru like Jason and neither did any of us older folk pay to send him balloons, we spent our money on tickets to go see the tour

Me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

I wish they'd take this headline off the home page. It's damaging and unfair. Once again, Jason gets a raw deal...

LovelyLady43 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

EW, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Show me video of this and then maybe this will have an ounce of credibility.

LJ Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

As for Jason...he's adorable. Those quirky twists of mouth and twinkle in his eyes. He can and I think will make a great album. I kinda like his style..as he has done since the start, he's very casual and with a shrug and smile seems to say "If you like me that's great, I like me and that's what matters. People are people even if they are stars!"

dan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Of course it is a popularity contest, now THATS a dum comment to make. No, lets put thru the idol that no one like how dum would THAT be

dan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

OH yeah, like thats going to work. Lets send him home because jason looks arrogant, cook and syesha would have been LONG gone if anyone went by that

me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

love this dude...I've thought he was way over the AI machine several weeks ago...his attitude of not giving a @#!? is more "rock and roll" than any amount of hair gel can make that poser David Cook....lol...you go Castro...stick it to the man!

(and his fans shouldn't be offended by the balloon comment, fame is surreal, and when you get hundreds of balloons because of a rumor you were sick..I'm sure it is a weird experience.)

JOSIE Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

I think EW should be sued for this slander. This is wrong and you know it is. I am a huge Jason fan and will stay that way.

kdollarsign Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

of course, he couldn't care less. Idol is a disgusting mess, emotional pornography. plus, people are lacerating him for not being a tool for the show. I'd want out, too.

To Ann Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I don't think jason's fans are kiddies. More like desperate housewives who loathe their hubbys and think maybe if they send Jason a balloon, he'll come sweep them off their feet, sing Tiny Tim songs to them accompanied by a ukulele of course. Maybe he'll even propose!!

shannea Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

I can not believe EW would participate in this nonsense about Jason. He was way too happy to be safe and so he deserved to be. I believe he works hard in his rehearsals as Carly said and I believe he is the most heartfelt contestant where music is concerned. I believe he just may surprise everybody. This is one jason fan not buying this.

DreadLockBoy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

uh, danO, if it were a fair voting process, than everyone should only be allowed to vote ONCE! Wake Up! Talk about dumb! People can vote as many times as they want to keep in the worst. Have you ever been to this site?

http://www.votefortheworst.com/forum/topic4841-240.html

Get a clue! The ones that run that site are despicable.

Dream On Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

Uh, don't you jason fans think you're overreacting just a tad? He's tired, and made an off-the-cuff comment. It's not terrible what he said, but why start screaming about conspiracies? You're making yourself seem as crazy as the balloon loons.

courtney Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

jason is probably tired. i dont blame him. plus hes hot=]

dashing4 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

WHAT A JOKE!! Hilarious!! American Idol producers thought they would derail him on Tuesday with all their nonsense and now this?! You guys are the pits! Something definitely seemed wrong with Jason on Tuesday but after all the CRAP he had to put up with in the media, etc. after the ALW, I don't blame him.

Leslie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

Don't believe this, Jason definitely wants to WIN! He is SUPER excited about next week.

beth Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

yeah...I have some issues with the credibility for this, too. Did TPTB decide this was a better tactic to get him off the show? Smear tactics, commence. Every year I have a "I'll never watch again" moment. This year I've had many. The whole show is disappointing.

dashing4 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

Sorry Mandi if you were just the typist.. Its the GREAT Jessica Shaw that is to blame for this nonsense. My mean side wishes that all the hateful journalist, producers, judges would get bashed, raked over the coals and hung out to dry. I do like Jason, but I like others in the contest as well and would hate to see ANY of them treated this way. YOU GUYS ARE JUST AS LOUSY AS AI. With GREAT exception -Michael Slezak. Can you rescue us, from this trash, Micheal?

Jason is the real deal Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Each week something new comes out to try to tear down Jason. It doesn't work! There over 2000 dreadheads and his fanbase continues to grow stronger and more dedicated!

Cook fan but Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

Poll the musicians union, Local 6 and Local 47 (neither tweenies nor housewives): Castro's style is their preference, followed closely by Cook. They don't bother with AI nonsense, but they do download from iTunes.

sarah Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I know jason and this is all such huge lies. He cannot even talk to the press. I think EW should be sued for this. AI is scared of Jason's strong fan base. Jason is a wonderful and talented person and does not deserve any of this. there is no way with all the competiton that jason would not have made it this far if he were not talented. Jason is a very very talented person and I hope he prooves everybody wrong.

Tim Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I've seen the rehearsals and Jason woeks as hard as anyone. His comments are taken out of context to help other losers on the show. JASON WILL WIN!!! Just like that SOUL PATROL guy that nobody thought had a chance.

Mindy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

Click on the American Idol link under "Special Coverage" in the upper right hand corner of this page. Does anyone else find it odd that out all the Idol news posted under Hollywood Insider this year that this is the only one that quotes a contestant who is currently on the show? Or that this is the lone article posted by Mindy? They're not allowed to talk to the media while they're contestants. Was your account hacked, Mindy?

michelle b Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

It's confirmed. Castro has the nuttiest fan base of them all. Some of the Soul Patrol must have connected with the younger fans to create the Dreadheads.

Keep voting for Jason (especially if he gives more bad performances. I hope he makes the finals. A month ago, he seemed like someone with a future but his fans will soon turn him into a Joke. Well, he sort of is a joke already.

TIM Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

shane Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

I was torn between Jason and David C. and do not like David A. but I am so upset over this Jason bashing that I am torn no longer and will be casting all my votes for Jason Castro and for all the people saying he cannot sing well he made it to the top 4 out of all those people thats more than I can say for you so next time you say someone cannot sing well look at yourself.

sam Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

I truly believe the 'journalist' took Jason's words completely out of context. I'm sure when he said the flower delivery was wierd he mean for him because he's not used to all of this. I am positive he enjoyed it very much and just gave his little akward laugh and was like 'whaaa haha'. Also, the poor boy has been treated like crap the past couple of weeks. Though I doubt he's ready to walk off, i'm sure he just doesn't want to be put down for every single little thing anymore. Anyone who believes the content in this article are very gullible and have never actually seen the boy. Why is everyone trying to sabotage him. He's amazing, get over it.

raven4 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

i believe what he said was taken out of context. someone who's a family friend of jason's said how excited & happy he was when he received the balloons. receivin 150 of them is really weird, doesnt mean he didnt appreciate 'em. nice try turning his fans against him...not gonna work.

seahawks08 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

This is for Michele b. Can you sing? did you make it to the american idol top 4 and no you did not and you never will. jason will proove everybody wrong.

Jennifer Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Everyone in the spotlight has been mis-quoted, or edited to make them look bad & we all know it. Jason has done nothing to cause anyone to believe he would say these things or act like he doesn't care about the competition. Even the other AI contestants admit he "works his butt off". Sorry, not going to work. Dreadheads aren't stupid.

lavender1960 Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

this is a gossip blog not the Wall Street Journal, an Idol Contestant saying they want to go home is reportable news - no one makes him yawn continuously during the elimination shows. And Michael Johns had to go home? Now that is criminal.

alli Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

That was SO taken out of context. Jason is ready to visit home when he makes the TOP 3. End of story. Please don't misquote him or take things out of context.

lol Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Castro fans, take a lesson from your idol, don't take it so seriously, have a sense of humor about the whole thing. Idol is a corporate nightmare to any real musician. However this kid ended up on this show he is reacting to the situation like I would expect any real artist to react. Him saying what he did in this article makes me like him more than anything I've seen any idol do. Be real music fans and realize that Idol is a joke and that you'll serve the guy better by just enjoying and buying his music and leaving the mania to the boyband fans.

brian Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

EW try thinking before you print a lie next time. The contestants cannot to interviews with reporters until they are kicked off. This is such a plot and a huge mistake. This huge Jason fan is very upset and I am 45 years old and a music teacher and Jason is a very talented artist. When becoming a fan of someone you looke at all areas. Hes talented, a very heartfelt and pure voice, personality and apperance. This makes a total american idol. He has all these qualities. go jason go.

steven wilbur Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Jason Castro is unique. That's why he's still in the competition. As far as appearing not to care...the judges slam him one week and praise him another and yet he sings all the songs the same. Simon appears to just want to embarrass him and humiliate him and I personally think he's just tired of it. He's obviously not going to win, he's already on the tour and there's really nothing more from him to get out of the competition other than more humiliating disparaging remarks from the judges. I can totally see why he's ready to go home.

Deb Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Cook fan here, but I think Jason looked pretty stoked to be in the top four last night, so this makes no sense. I would love to see a Cookie/Jason finale.

rachel Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

WTF!!! as a friend of Jason Castro i can tell you that jason was very greatful for the balloons from his fans.....and the fact is he barely got to see his brother last weekend because he was PRACTICING!!

cheyenne. Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

yeah, i don't think i believe this and i'm not going to until i hear and see him say it himself.
not some woman who's trying to make all of his fan's hate him.

i still love jason castro and i still think he should win 100%.

pamela Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

WOW everybody has to yawn and some point in their life and is that a crime. So freakin what he yawned. That does not mean he is tired of the show and as far as talent the man is very talented. I am switching my vote to Jason now just for all the garbage about him. He did not deserve these lies and so what sometimes saying weird can mean weird in a good way.

Gina Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

The kid probably wants to go home and work on his own music. I don't blame him. He's been playing this reality 'game' for a good amount of time now. I'd want off, too.

Whack Job Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

You are all a bunch of whack jobs. No one here knows Jason. No one knows what he's thinking. You're all crazy.

Stacey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

This article is complete TRASH. Jason is completely misquoted. He's very excited to be in the Top 4. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

cedric Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

I am totally embarassed that EW would print such a nasty and untrue article about jason castro. I am a huge fan and have been torn between him and David A. but Jason will get all my votes from now on. This is such gargabe and lies and the contestants cannot do interviews while still on the show otherwise they would be all over the media. EW you deserve to be sued for this.

Sara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Hey lavender1960, jason yawned ONCE, not "continuously" when he was backstage. Not to mention he was very sick and on several meds. Sorry your fav was voted off, but that is not Jason's fault.

Vale Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Jason still wants to be on Idol. Did anyone see how happy he was after he was declared safe? Yeah that didn't look like the face of someone who wants to leave anytime soon. It's obvious his comment was taken out of context and anyways aren't Idol contestants not supposed to be interviewed when they're on the show? This all seems a little bit sketchy, but that's just my opinion.

TIM Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

On the Final night Ryan Seacrist says " Your next American Idol is (pause) JASON CASTRO!!!! He will upset the world and defeat Wierd David C who is about as real as Pam Andersons breasts. Their is no fake with Jason. He is what you see unlike the other contestants with their fake smiles and remarks. This article takes his words out of context to try to destroy Jasons Fan Base. He works as hard as the others maybe harder since he is forced to sing stuff like Neil Diamond who He has nver heard before.

yeah right Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Hmmm this article seems very fishy to me. Why is it only about one contestant and not the others? Why are all the quotes negative? Me thinks I smell bs.

toger Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I really hate it when "journalists", have an agenda against one of the idols, in order to make their own preferred contestant look better. Way to totally put a negative spin on what was probably a harmless conversation. Shame on you Ms. Bierly.

i <3 jason castro Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

jason is my favorite. I hope to have his babies someday. i can see in his eyes that he wants to be there and would never say anything like that. we are soul mates and i hate that you all don't understand him like i do.

Slick Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Jason can sing, but lacks range and power. He's lucky to have gotten this far. Fortunately, all the Jasonites in the world wont get him past either of the Davids (thank goodness). Anyone see how the Soup show called out his laxidaisical attitude a couple weeks ago? Spot on! Leave already.

Texred Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Well, it would be a weird experience to receive 150 balloons from a bunch of fans you don't know--and he said it was cool. Who could blame Jason for being kinda ready to go home after all the trashing he's getting--I think he's doing a great job of handling it for a barely 21-yea-r old college kid--better than most people would and better than some have. I'm guessing this interview was edited in a way to make Jason look bad--not gonna happen!

Absolte lie! These "comments the writer states Jason made are completely FASLE and out of character for him. Why is this article coming out now? Regardless his fans are smarter than this and will support and defend him forever. Seems like BS to me and a work of fiction from Jason Bashers.

Lawyer Dude Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

This is indeed an outrage. All viewers of AI should band together and file a class action suit against Jason Castro. He is a hippie and a no-talent fraud who is wasting our time and our entertainment dollars. When I pay my cable bill each month, I expect better than this. He should be ashamed of himself.

Leigh Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

RUTH FLEETWOOD Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

Jason Castro is one in a million. I remember when he was highly critisized for not being familiar with the stage production "Cats." Now I ask you...which is of more importance. Seeing a stage show or spending your summers in foreign countries helping to build housing for the poor.

fralkin Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Testes, 1, 2

Stephanie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

What IS this? WHO posted this? There are some GLARING MISTAKES. The "article" says that the reporter spoke to Jason on MONDAY...In it he's quoted as saying the balloon delivery occured "yesterday"...that would have been on SUNDAY...WRONG...the delivery occured Thursday of last week.
Also, it has been stated very clearly that ***AMERICAN IDOL CONTESTANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SPEAK TO ANY REPORTERS UNTIL AFTER THE SHOW IS OVER***. This all sounds bogus to me....like the e-mail "leak" from TV Guide last week that he was being eliminated. Whoever is running the SMEAR CAMPAIGN against Jason has truly reached new lows....SHAME ON YOU EW for going along with it!!!

jcast Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

I've thought from the beginning that in spite of his 21 years Jason's insulated, protective home life ill prepared him for the wild side of fame he's now subjected to. He's such a gentle, beautiful spirit and all this questionable attention, a lot of it with sexual overtones, has made him extremely uncomfortable. I hope he gets his wish and goes home this week cuz we now know him, love him, and will await his CD. We don't expect him to sell his soul for fame.

Erica Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

THE CONTESTANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK TO THE PRESS WHILE ON THE SHOW! This is obviously a phony story. How come Jason is the only one she supposedly interviewed? Please people, don't believe it. She just made upan article based on all of Jason's sterotypes. Nice try! I'm not buying it.

mar Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

Disappointed in Carly and Brooke leaving the show. I think the judges have too much say and influence the voters. They can give opinions without being cruel.

Trisha Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

If any of the statements made in this so-called "article" are False...it is ****SLANDER**** and I believe this publication or this reporter could be sued for that. From what I have read and know there are definately some *falsehoods* in this piece. I urge this "article" be removed/retracted immediately!!!!!

Laura Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

Interesting timing of this article. Were the marching orders for this article directly from the AI producers or Paula's camp? Crazy way to try to get Jason's fans to send him home. We will send him home for a day for his parade in his home town as part of the final three.

nancy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

The shameless attempt by the Idol Machine to manipulate Jason's fan base is pathetic. They must be shakin' in their boots that their dream finale isn't going to happen.
This is so not true. Jason's fans are too smart and dedicated to buy into this nonsense.

donnie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I am so sick of this no talent loser. PLEASE stop voting for him!

jason is love Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

DON'T BELIEVE IT
DON'T STOP VOTING FOR JASON

Ryan Seacrest Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

Those rumors about Jason Castro are not true. He's part of our family and we love him.

hjp Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

don't believe this, a video clip would have been much more credible...I know he just said it in true jason fashion

DON'T STOP VOTING FOR JASON

Ernesto Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

Castro is as talented as a rock!
He should've been voted off GRRR!!!
American Idol has surely turned into crap, and the judges baiting for Archuleta is just sick...they never mention his mistakes GRR!!! Oh well...thank God we have a Carrie Underwood who won and actually deserved it!

CASTRO ROX! Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

JASON CASTRO IS AN AMAZING SINGER.HE IS NOT GIVING UP OR QUITING, HE IS SIMPLY SAYING THAT HE MISSED HOME! HE DOES CARE, MAYBE JUST NOT AS MUCH AS BROOKE WHO CRIED HER WAY OFF THE STAGE! HES BEEN GONE FOR 3 MONTHS!! U TRY THAT AND NOT BE HOMESICK!

Laurel Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

I think he's been smoking too much "funny stuff"...making him lethargic and laid back! Doesn't seem to be any drive there.

Diana Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Yeah, this isn't very believable.

trepithet Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

I'd sure be weirded out by getting 150 balloons sent to me by strangers. The kind of fans that buy or make gifts for the objects of their adulation have always kind of disturbed me- why be that invested in a person you'll never know personally? Isn't supporting them by buying whatever their music enough?

valerie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

if he wants to go home shouldn't he just go? if he's overwhelmed and just not ready yet shouln't he just call it quits i mean it's up to him

halleuigh Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Halleuigh for Jason Castro and boo to EW for this nonsense about him. Jason puts too much into his music and talent to be treated this way. I vote for him because I like his music, personality and his style. Jason has a very laid back personality and some people take it as not caring. You are not inside his mind and how dare you prejudge him and you do not even know him. How about all you people out there who are judging him, I'll bet you were judged at some point in your life and it did not feel very good so stop doing it to Jason just because you do not understand him. You should be voting on talent and the total package which is what Jason brings to the table. EW this is bull!!!!

Rockwallfan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

how was this "interview" conducted? I thought that Idols are not able to conduct interviews until they are off the set. I would bet that Jason had no idea that when you 'ran into him' backstage that he was being interviewed. He is a young charismatic man! He is honest... but I would like to hear if you told him this was an interview that would be posted online? Please let us know?
much concern since Jason seems to be getting hit by all sides at the AI machine!
Thanks Please respond ...where Mike Slezak?

AI_watcher Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

If AI based the final four solely on talent, Jason should have been gone before Michael Johns and Carly Smithson - both of which have a better shot at a record deal than he does!
Considering who is left David Cook should win but if he doesn't, he'll likely be the "Daughtry" of this season and go on to be the most successful.

Justin Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

This goes out to slick, lawyer dude, donnie, ernesto and the liers who printed this article. This article is false and something should be done about it. The contestants cannot do interviews unless they are kicked off. Jason never said these things. i will remain a Jason fan. As far as the ones listed that said he cannot sing. Did you try out for American Idol and make the top 4. No you did not so shut up and quit bad mounthing someone very talented who beat out thousands and thousands and thousands of people.

Amy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:05 PM EST

I didn't think the contestants were allowed to talk to the press, but in a llimited way. This doesn't sound credible. What a good way to make Jason look bad in the midst of this competition. I won't believe it until I hear Jason say it with his own mouth.

Kiwi Green Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

What's on tomorrow's cover of EW--Jason kicking a puppy? Give me a break! Jason, stay true to yourself! We'll see who has the last word when this season's contestants release albums...

Amy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Calling on Slezak! What is up with this garbage? Wheres the proof? Very disappointed that this sort of stuff is allowed to float around.

Charles Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Come Jessica, What is your point in writingthis story. If true, I admire Jason Castro. He has a firm grip on the handle of fame -- on its absurdity and unhealthness. Good for him. He has a sense of the importance of privacy and personal relationships as opposed to vacuous hollow hero worship.

Audrey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Another lying sack of poo. Man how much did Nigel, Simon and the AI Powers that Be, pay you to write that?

Oh please this asault on Jason is so telling. FEAR,they fear that Jason will sneak in and ruin their plan for DC Vs DA. And know what all these slanderous acts are just going to make more people VOTE FOR JASON. Jason is the true talent on that stage. Oh and Carly fan, she had millions spent on her producer a CD already that FLOPPED. Know why, Carly can't sing all she did was SCREAM. Some of us like and enjoy singing that is melodic and moving. Jack Johnson, James Taylor, Jmes Blunt, Christoper Cross, Logins and Messina. Jason will be fine. He will out sell all of those from Season 7. Just you all wait and see.

Sharon Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

Probably it's all in the way you read the article. He might mean if he is voted off he has prepared himself to go home and the balloon statement it could haved been meant in a good way, because he never had that happen before. I am a Jason fan I vote ever week for him. To tell you the trusth I don't know how those kids work so hard every week, get out there and sing then have to stand there and take the ridiculous comments from the judges. Instead of giving comments that will help, like it was pitchy or you might want to try this, I think they try to break their spirit. Probably it is time to change the judges It's just my oponion

Charles Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

Well Jessica, I don't see the point of running this article unless you and yours are bent on ruining Jason Castro's chances of winning another week or possibly usurping the david versus david finale. I find this article puzzling.

Meg Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I actually don't see why these comments are so controversial. he probably did say them. all he is basically saying is that he intends to be true to himself and there are going to be those who don't like it but thats just the way it is. he also seems to be aware of the fact that he wont win and is therefore prepared when it is his time to leave. all that means is he wont break down when he gets voted off. it has also been clear the whole time that he has been overwhelmed by the fame, he's been awkward and shy in almost all of his interviews. there is some definite EW spin going on here because he isn't saying anything that merits this type of attention.

jo Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Lets take the focus off of Paula!!! I don't beleive it - totally not credible.

Toger, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for pointing that out!

Carmen Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

Oh, Please!!! I don't believe a word of that ridiculous paragraph. Its not even a story. And she calls herself a journalist. LOL!

NR Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Jason Castro should have been voted off of the show "weeks ago", especially before Carly Smithson. Seems teeny boppers vote for "cute", not talented! Maybe in coming weeks the voters will finally get it right!

Katherine Loves Jason Castro Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Let's give the guy a break. If you watched the show from the beginning, Jason admitted that he's only sung in public 5 times before he made the Top 24. Archuleta has probably been singing since he was in diapers. The Idol stage can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned performers!! And you can tell right off the bat that Jason is a very shy, laid-back, easy-going guy. It's unfair to compare him to rockers like Cook or Michael Johns or Carly because he's got more of an indie vibe, especially when it's really the producers who are pulling the strings. They were probably hoping Jason would go home which is why they put him in the dreaded opening spot. It doesn't make him a horrible singer, just different. In fact, if judging by his fan base who keep saving him, obviously he'll do pretty well with the public. Regardless of what happens, I think Jason should be proud of his accomplishments. Being in Top4 is no stick to shake at...

Momo Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

So THIS is what happened to Taylor Hicks fans!!!!111!!!

Run Jason, run!!

Marie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

BULL****. The contestants are not allowed to talk to the media. Period. This is obviously Plan C - or are we up to Plan D - in trying to get rid of Jason Castro so TPTB can have the finale of their choice. Nice try, but this sounds a lot like defamation of character and yet more foul play. Jason must really be raking in the votes to merit shenanigans of this magnitude.

daBrick Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

I think this hairy thing is totally useless. Everything he tries to sing all sounds the same as everything else he tried to sing. B-O-R-I-N-G...

Susan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

The full article that Jessica wrote about song selection is posted. Follow the link above. Its a very interesting article, with quotes from all the contestants. It appears American Idol granted EW exclusive rights to sit in on the process and interview/write the article. Jason's comments weren't so bad, I think he is proud of how far he has gotten. And if he went home, he would be o.k. Clearly, based on his reaction yesterday, he was overjoyed to still be in the competition.

Angie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

I wish everyone would stop calling his fans "teenyboppers!" Let it go people...his fans like him for his voice. Okay now that, that is out of the way after rereading this piece of crap that is trying to pass for real journalism I must say that the comments themselves are not that bad. I think he was just saying that he is just staying true to himself and people will either like it or they won't and when its his time to go he will be okay with it. I don't think the "weird" comment was meant to be bad at all and he actually said getting the balloons was cool. Finally I would just like to say its obviious that these statements were taken and spun in a direction that was meant to be damaging towards Jason Castro and it makes me sick that this was posted. Also, why is this on the website before any info about who got sent home...which I think is the real story today. Last thing, why does the story about brooke going home have Jason's picture on it? I'm just saying thats "weird" LOL

Sally in Chicago Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

He's tired, that's all. It's overwhelming like he said. Last season the Idols talked about always on the go, doing promo, being told what to do, who to talk to, very orchestrated....and this young man is a free spirit. He probably didn't think he would last this long.

I_know_Jason Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

So let me get this straight.... Jessica Shaw interviewed Jason, and then a third party named Mandy Bierly wrote "Jason's words" in this article. Hmmm...Did something get lost in the translation and some words get twisted around? Yes, I'm positive of it. I happen to know that Jason was very happy to receive all of those balloons and certanly didn't think there was anything weird about it. He was very appreciative of his fans thinking of him. Don't believe a word of this poorly written article.

monkey Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Well i feel as though, through the past months of seeing Jason progress through AI,he has always been an awesome entertainer and person, and I believe he would have never said anything like that, in one of the intervies from the AI website, he sayd he had his fans to thank for getting him there, and even at the elimination round he was relieved to be saved, or was I the only one that notice that, his reaction was not one of a person that wants to go home, I believe this story is all that is a story to make us Jason's fans feel bad for him, and the last words thats not the Jason talking, I bet you he was really grateful for thw balloons,

Kristi Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

I think people are being hateful to Jason.
He is just a young guy who has never been in the public eye.
And to go on Idol has to be over whelming to even the most polished contestants.
Jason just isn't a guy to suck up to anyone.......
Then you have Brooke who is such a suck up........
I love Jason's style and he deserves to be there as much as any of them......
I hope he makes it to the final 3...

SKEoD Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

wow, this is funny, his freinds in the church quire dared him to auddition because they thought he was good enough,he is, has his own sound and style(all that idol is looking for) and now media and apparently the producers are wanting him gone with all the bad publicity stunts. see paula screw up? yeh that was major veiwer control, who could stay bias as they watched his second song, and how hard was it for him to sign with all the thoughts of idol being rigged? the judges comments do sway the votes. do you r
