Jake Gyllenhaal starring in 'Prince of Persia'

May 20, 2008, 02:16 PM | by Nicole Sperling

Categories: Movie Biz

Jakegyllenhaal_l It may just be the worst kept secret in Hollywood but Disney has finally confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal will be their next big-screen hero in Jerry Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, a fantasy adventure epic based on the video game franchise. Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince of 6th Century Persia, who pairs up with Tamina, a princess to be played by new Bond girl Gemma Arterton, to prevent a nobleman from acquiring the Sands of Time -- a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is scheduled to start filming in Morocco this July, pending an actors' strike delay. Screenwriters on the project include Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard (The Great Raid), game creator Jordan Mechner, and Boaz Yakin (The Rookie).

Not to be an ass, but I think there should be more fighting than history at least enough to stay true to the games.

farshad k Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Nima Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

I forgot to add that if u look at prince of persia the game and compare it to this kid and if u think they look alike then you should get your eyes cheaked..( no matter how much makeup or w/e they do to him... his not gona look anything like him.)

Nima Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

U gotta BE KIDDIN ME!!!! HE DOESNT EVEN LOOK PERSIAN OR NETHING!!!! WHAT ARE THEY trying to do kill the movie like 300??? atleast make this one right and pick sumone tat achullay looks like him... This is just WOW..SAD CASE!! this is very insulting for persians btw.. just like 300. If the director goes with this guy then bah screw this movie.

Sara Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

Jake is a perfect cast; he's got the true Aryan look. Can't wait to see the movie.

Chaz Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

jake is doesn't have muscles and im not sure he 'd fit for the part as in the looks beside Dastan aint even close to a persian name and of course disney will ruin the movie and make it a fkin family movie beside ruining the whole fkin story and we can't do anything about it so Zzz

IcyOne Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

Amanda what the hell is wrong with you Jake might be alright but Gemma Atron really Really sucks ass because she's not remotely beautiful.
Tia The rock is to musculer even though I wouldn't mind seeing him as the prince.

Tia Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 04:09 AM EST

they shouldve picked the rock

Carrie D Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

I agree they couldve picked a more 'colorful' actor...but this is the same hollywood that likes to make cleopatra white...

Yas Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 03:43 AM EST

i cant wait for this movie, and i love the casting for it, jake will be amazing, my dads staring in it as a extra for Amars men?
:D so exicted!

Amanda Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 03:45 AM EST

I think all the actors are perfect for this movie. Jake Gyllenhaal is the best for this role.

natlie Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:27 AM EST

did you guys just heard now that the movie won't be til either 2010 or 2011? because I just did a few days ago or yesterday. and I just saw Jake dressed up as the prince and WHROH he's butt ugly with his tops!

Lindsay Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

I can't believe they really picked Jake. Honestly I wouldn't of minded someone like Oded Fehr in the role. Now that's an amazing actor. Anyway I do have to agree. I think Jared Leto would of been PERFECT for the role. He truly resembles the prince and he is an awesome actor. Someone mentioned earlier that he wasn't mainstream and that might be why, because Disney might of strictly wanted a big name. However the bad thing about that is then people expect certain acting and then grow tired of it, to be honest I hate seeing Tom Cruise in movies, he can really act, however I just don't perfer to see him. Sometimes it's good to come in with a realitively unknown actor, because then it can really hit off well like with the guy who played lead in Stardust. Anyway back to Jared, I wish he would of been chosen...he was freaking awesome in Alexander!

mattydouglas Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 06:22 AM EST

this is F*&^ing BS that they casted Jake Gyllenhaal as the prince for 1 he does not look anything like a persian, secondly he's not muscly and 3rd he has the wrong body type for the prince, the prince is slender but full of muscle, he's kinda just chubby

Stephani Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Man, have you guys seen Jake in this role yet?

http://host.trivialbeing.org/galleries/persia-aug12-jake-gyllenhaal-as-the-prince/jake-gyllenhaal-shirtless-prince-of-persia-01.jpg

Ain't no way Jared Leto was pulling that off, too short for one. And I can't imagine his short frame holding this much muscle either.

persian princess Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

I can't believe it! this sucks. Couldn't they like pick someone like John Abraham or something. Sure jake is a good actor but he also has to look the part and be young. There are plenty of roles out ther for him, he should take thoes and give the roles to Nazanin Afshin or maybe even jered Leto.

HalfAlien Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 04:59 AM EST

They should have made it animated, like Beowulf

IcyOne Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

There might be hope for the movie with Disney because they own No Country For Old Men which is in fact rated R.

jeff Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

totally, aishwarya rai embodies the meaning of beauty, she would have been amazing... Her face is like out of this world pretty

Tiffany Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I am a huge fan of the Prince of Persia series. However, looking at the movie companies and actors for the upcoming movie of the game, I completely am disgusted. First off, I think Jake Gyllanhal would not fit the Prince's shoes at this moment for the sands of time. I've seen some pictures of him dressed as the prince and they have made him look like the prince in warrior within. They have also changed the characters names. Since when is the Prince of Persia, named Price Dastan? And the other girl? Doesn't look persian at all also like Jake, and her name isn't even farah? And Disney making this movie? It can be a family movie but not something rated G or PG. Therer are so many things wrong, I can't type all of them, not even sure if I will see this movie when it comes out.

google it Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

PERSIANS ARE NOT ARABS THEY ARE WHITE

IcyOne Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

I almost foregot that they could have just made the movie like the Final Fantisy movie that way everyone would be happy because the Prince and everyone else would look just like the game, They'd have their original voices, and it would be a lot cheeper for HollyWood to make.

IcyOne Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Okay now that I've seen that picture of Jake dressed as the Prince I have no problem with him being in the movie for now. But Gemma Attren still sucks and Disney needs to get lost.
Also judging by the way that he's dressed it could just be one long movie covering the entire trillogy because if you think about it Jerry Brokehiemer never said it was gonna be based off of the sands of time game but what he could have ment was just the sands themselves.

J Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Sry guys but just throwing random middle eastern people into the role wont make the movie a hit. You need a big name, mainstream actor for a movie this big. Besides its more important for the actor to look like the prince in the game, so its not like he has to be that dark skinned anyway. But I'm still not happy with Gyllenhaal though. I was pulling for Orlando bloom as the prince, especially after seeing him in movies like Kingdom of heaven and Pirates.

Jay Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

Having some random "Persian" in a movie would tank the movie...I think Jake will make a great "Prince" it is after all "ACTING"...Are there princes in the world getting upset because Jake isn't really a prince, do you think only REAL princes should play a prince?!?

Brandy Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I have to be honest...no one would want to watch a movie with some no name actor in it...I myself would like to see Jared Leto play the role, but his movies tank because he is not mainstream...

Maya Duricekova Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I didn't like the idea of Jake being the Prince, terrible choice, but check out this link. Not bad at all.

gh Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Enjoy seeing Jake in anything.. just
enjoy seeing him period!!!

Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

The Movie should be renamed Prince of los angeles

IcyOne Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

If this movie does well I Know the PERFECT person to play Kilena in the sequel... Monica Bellucci Because A. she looks like her B. Plays her voice in the game C. used to be a modle and D. For those of you who don't know her she played the wife of the French-Man in The Matrix Reloded/Revolutions.

Like I said PERFECT!!!!

Prince Mark Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

There's no way you signed it 35 times you lier because I Know most of the people how signed it.

IcyOne Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

May 28, 2010 Actually

>=( Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

I've Signed it 35 times already. Plus the release date has been pushed to May 10, 2010.

Amar Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

Everyone! I know your exremly mad about these castings, YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFRENCE!!! I forone am pissed about jake being the prince, so go to http://www.gopetition.com and search Prince Of Persia to sign a petition to RE CAST THESE PEOPLE!!!

IcyOne Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

GREAT AND DEVASTATING NEWS
Ubisoft anounced on a different website that they have absolutly nothing to do with the new movie coming out!!!! >:( CRAP!!!!

Niki Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Has anyone here even BEEN through what is considered "Persia"??? A good percentage of thier people are actually FAIR SKINNED. Jakes playing the part. Deal with it.

yashar Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I do respect to all these people and expect them to respect to my home History.Viva Iran

yashar Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

by the way I think its professional job so lets the professionals take the responsibility ,I just hope the move would be faithful to the story line and persian History

yashar Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

they Defenetly chose wrong actross for prince and farah, other casts are great,I think disney should put more affort to finde actores to play such sensetive rolls, they can use real handsome persian boy and beautiful persian girl to take roll

lynn Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

well they could've chosen oded fehr but let jake gyllenhaal do his job.
you never know maybe he'll be amazing and surprise us all. i am looking forward to this movie.

IcyOne Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

It could be worse they could have cast WWE's The Great Kali as the Prince ....What a Nightmare That would be:(

Robinhaze Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 04:31 AM EST

Mmh....I truly don't know what would be the perfect choice for actors playing the main roles, but NOT Gyllenhaal. And it is not just a problem of physical appearance, to me. Nothing wrong with Jake as an actor, let's make it clear (and sorry....I am quite happy they didn't call Bloom either ^^), but I think he is not appropriate for this role. They should better reconsider. Prince of Persia has too many fans ;)

Aj Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Yeah, Jerry B, if you are reading these comments, recast the actors for this movie. BTW, P.O.P: Warrior Within was my favorite game and Dizney is being stoopid 4 not having exotic actors.

IcyOne Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

What the ....????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

natlie Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

And does the movie have to be rated R or MA? Don't you all think it should at least Rated PG or at least M like National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean? Because I'm not in for gore's, blood, volient, aldult whatever and/or Language. I'm for Adventure, romance, comedy, and animation both 2D and 3D.

natlie Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Well I don't, Orlando Bloom from both lord of the rings and Pirates of the Caribbean should be the Prince of Persia because one he have's the voice of the Prince and two his hair is perfect for him, and here's my virson of movie's with sailor moon, Shrek, ash from pokemon, Cardcaptor sakura, manny from iceage, Jack Sparrow, and Prince of Persia,(this movie is set after sailor moon superS 5, Serena and her friends adventures continue from after the sailor moon R movie, our heroes are sent into another world of Persia were sailor moon is forced to rescue a princess named tima from an evil viser and join forces with The Prince of Persia and Speak with a sprit she cannot see but can hear of Jack Sparrow as he is forced to speak with her as he and his crew on earth still as immortals. Can The mighty Sailor Moon save the two world's without the Silver Crystal?) So what do you guys think? Cool Huh?

Anonomus Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS UP COMING PIECE'O'CRAP GO TO GOPATITION.COM BECAUSE SOMEONE MADE A PATITION FOR THEM TO RECAST THIS MOVIE.

Anonomus Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding I was talking about if they tried to make the other 2 games in2 movies they need to be RATED R

Alp Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 05:39 AM EST

Dear Maria,

You absolutely chose the best persons for Sands of Time.. Hope Jerry Bruckheimer understand his error and asks those two you mentioned.

Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Don't argue with the troll. It means they win. Let's just wait and see people.

sicnarf619 Sun, Jun 29, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

THE SANDS OF TIME GAME DIDNT FEATURE SUGGESTIVE LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT. ONLY A LITTLE BLOOD VIOLENCE. & DISNEY HAS ALREADY RELEASD SEVERAL M0VIES B4 THAT FEATURED BLOOD VIOLENCE. IT'S TOTALLY NOT AN ISSUE.

anonomus Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I forgot to say that Disney of all things SHOULDN'T be involve with the this particular movie because of 4 factors.
1.BLOOD
2.VIOLENCE
3.LANGUAGE
4.ADULT CONTENT

anonomus Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

First of all how can they choose Jake from Bubble Boy to play a blood thirsty WORRIER that can run in any direction on a wall and basically does his own marcial arts with any weapon you can think of. Second if they want atrue wariorr they should choose one of the guys from 300 especially the kid that got his head decapitated. Even though he died he still LOOKS, ACTS, and FIGHTS like the The PRINCE of PERSIA!!!!!!!

Persian Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 05:27 AM EST

i dont get whats wrong with u guys,

im persian and i have also blue eyez and
brown hairs, so i think he is a good choice

sicnarf619 Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

sicnarf from the philippines here..
ive already played the games and i noticed that the prince doesnt even look persian in the game..he looks more like the type of hugh jackman (warrior within and two thrones)..
so why bother looking for a persian actor to play the prince's role? it's a disney movie afterall - a hollywood movie. Gyllenhaal even looks like the prince in the sands of time game..so why bother? will be waiting for the movie next year..wat matters in the first place is the storyline..the action..the rating..and chart positions..
and oh..remember..it's a bruckheimer film..expect this will be an explosive one..

gcap Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 04:27 AM EST

Muzammil Ibrahim or Dino Morea should be prince of persia.

gcap Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 04:25 AM EST

why do u have white guy as a prince of persia!!!!! i should be the prince of persia, i'm waaaay better looking and i look persian at least! if not they should pick someone like Muzammil Ibrahim or Dino Morea. They better not fkk up this amazing story line. I've been playing POP since 1992, True fan if there ever was one and I'm already dissapointed.

Amanda Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

I am an actress. I have Persian actor friends that are very talented and truly the real definition of EXOTIC. I am not sure what the producers of this film are thinking. Jake is a great actor, but not for this role. He doesn't look like a Persian Prince. They will probably hire a stunt man. He definitely does not look PERSIAN! Mr. Brukcheimer if by any chance you're reading this, I can refer you to real Persian and Indian actors and actresses. It seems that your casting person needs my help. Good luck to you making this Persian movie with WHITE ACTORS!

Ziba Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

Unbelievable!!! This is disgusting!!! Isn't the movie called Prince of PERSIA!!! Hello? It's a PERSIAN PRINCE! not a white prince. Jake is a great actor, but he should NOT BE prince of Persia. And don't get me started with the girl. If Hollywood thinks that's exotic, then god help us all. She is English!!! NOT Indian. Jerry Bruckheimer, did you lose Aishwarya Rai's number ? or any other Indian Actress' or even Persian Actors. Anything, but white. SHAME ON HOLLYWOOD AND THE PRODUCERS OF THIS FILM! I will not pay a dime to see it.
There are so many talented middle-eastern actors and actresses Mr. Bruckheimer, but you don't give them a break. Everybody has to start somewhere. Believe me nobody cares to see Jake as the Prince or the English girl playing Indian.

Takuse Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

i wonder if anyone has pointed out that one of the main elements of prince of persia is the use of freerunning can this guy do anything i mean come on y throw a stunt double in for those parts have to pay him too while u can just find an actor that actually knows how to freerun and actually looks like the prince. i bet they'll end up using so much wires all the stunts will look fake and that'll be the end of a great franchise just like the new prince of persia will probably be

Trish Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

They could have hired the real Prince of Persia David Zandi and instead they give us Gyllenhaal and some white British chick, what a shame, shame on you Jerry and Disney, shame on you.

Maria Sat, May 24, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

his guy is NOT the prince of persia

Go here to see the one who SHOULD be...his name is Hrithik Roshan and is the true prince...

http://www.housefull.in/wallpapers/hrithik-roshan/hrithik_roshan-1.jpg

And this should have been Tahmina...she looks way more like Farah:

http://www.parinda.com/files/storyimages/Bipasha_Basu_no_entry.jpg

Why is jewish zionist owned Hollywood so stupid and racist?

I just threw up a little in my mouth at the thought of Jake Gyllenhall playing a Persian Prince and Averton play a wannabe exotic princess....she doesn't look exotic at ALL.

This is BS Fri, May 23, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

This story was broke by LatinoReview.

Not by EW.

If people here genuinely care about Hollywood news, I suggest visiting that website. They break news sooner and their writers have the integrity to credit their sources for all other news.

StaleCake Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

I love Jake - love him! - but this is seriously offensive. Say you're an excellent persian actor, and have spent 10 years playing "terrorist #3" or "convenience store clerk" - now a real Persian part comes along and you're usurped by effing Jake? How about actual Iranian actors ADRIAN PASDAR or CAS ANVAR? Or, even how about KAL PENN? All hot.

mexipino Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

There were no arab/persian/iranian actors who could play the part?

Persians are of the arab world. And even if people are all the sudden not wanting to consider persians part of the arab world, then they still could have got an persian actor for the part. Disney is so Racist.

Fran Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

WOW!!!!!!!!! I dreamt about this moment all-time, and it has become true!!!! Dreams always come true!!!! I'm so happy that Jake will play as our new "Prince of Persia".... I can't wait to watch the movie!!!! I Love U Jake!!!!! xXx

Fran Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dreamed all-time this moment, and finally it became true!!!! I'm so happy Jake will be our new "Prince of Persia".... I can't wait to watch the movie!!!! I Love U, Jake!!!! xXx

Nix Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Persians are not Arab. They generally have pale skin with very dark hair and usually dark eyes.

RP Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:50 AM EST

Yeah, I like Jake and everything but I'm surprised they didn't find someone who at least looked like they from the region.

I can think of 3 actors who can be in an action movie and at least look ethnic (one of them actually being Middle Eastern).

You-Know-Who Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

How can Jake Gyllenhaal pass as Persian?

JustMe Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

Can't wait to see him in the movie!

Ro Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Yes!! :D Jake is going to be amazing in the role!

Jami Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

They couldn't find a Middle Eastern(ish) actor to be the "prince of persia"? I'm tried of Hollywood doing stuff like that.

Lynn Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Yessssss! Jake as the Prince of Persia is brilliant! I definitely see him as the handsome hero.
