'American Idol' finale rumors

May 20, 2008, 01:39 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: American Idol, Music, Television, TV Biz

Jonasbrothers_l With the American Idol finale but mere hours away, who, besides season 7's Top 12, will take the Nokia Theater stage on Wednesday's two-hour results show extravaganza? Simon Cowell's pride and joy Carrie Underwood, who seems to never turn down an Idol request, was announced as a special performer, and we hear disco queen Donna Summer, rock legends ZZ Top, and teen sensations the Jonas Brothers (pictured) are also on tap.

Idol finale billing always seems to follow a policy of last-minute announcements. By virtue of the show's live format, it also favors pre-taping, like last year's performance by Green Day of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." Considering this season's ratings dip, however, we wouldn't be surprised if there is a surprise or two thrown in.

Did'nt Ryan say the phones will be open for 4 hours. If this is true, I tried calling all night for DA and could not get through. When I called after midnight, the voice on the phone said the number was disconnected. Did anyone else have the same problem? Was the phone open three or four hours? Did anyone have any problems calling after midnight for DC? 12M is a big gap.

Granny Thu, May 22, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Did anyone else find Simon's apology odd? Like he knew who the winner was and was back peddling because of the future business relationship he'll have to have with David C. Couldn't he at least have said "Because of your great performances tonight on the finale" instead of "I watched last night's competition again last night when I got home and changed my mind? How phoney and out of character the apology was - why did he offer one?

ritchie Thu, May 22, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Hey James, "wake up".I never mentiond rigged or anything like that. You seem to be the one having a hemorrhoid
I'm saying the "braintrust" on "idol"
should use their brains when it come to making decisions that may influence an outcome. There are a lot of problems on the show especially when much better contestants are gone too early due to looks, sympathy or whatever else some contestants bring with them.To solve this problem, vote the worst one off until the final three. Also, have the finals on Friday or Saturday when the time zones may not have such a say in he outcome. All it takes is a little thing which has been lacking the last couple of years.Pauls and Randy must go.Paula never seems to know where she is and the other night Randy thought it was 2007.What? Also, the last few years Randy has thought he was in some dog pound.Sorry Randy but you're delusional. The "Dog Pound" is reserved for "Browns" fans only. Please stay out!!!!
Let's bring enjoyment and "Reality" back to "Idol"

Thank you James Thu, May 22, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

This was a beautiful ending to a great year. Just because your favorite didn't win doesn't mean the 'wrong' David won! David C is full of talent and heart, and he is mature and gracious as well. David A is also an amazing talent, but it simply too young to have this kind of pressure and can't form complete sentences when praised. i wish him luck, and I can't wait for David C's music!

roy Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I thought David A should have won but I also really like David C. They were awesome contestants and are both good people. I wouldn't worry about David A. He has people lined up to offer him record contracts and he will do well. Both of them will.

Carrie Underwood's career has only begun to take off. She is an amazing performer/vocalist and will be around for years to come. To take away from her achievements and talent is wrong. She has proven by her album sales, hit singles and awards that she is no one hit wonder. Drew Lachey. Oh please!
Carrie is thankful to American Idol for giving her this opportunity and rightly so. Nothing wrong with being grateful. More people should be.

james Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Ritchie spake thus...

"The wrong David won and anyone with any sense at all should know this. Forget about David A's age and staying in school and such garbage. He should have won and the are two reasons and two reasons only..." blah, blah, blah."

Man, you need to get a life...seriously. If you're going to get that up-in-arms about the results of American Idol I think it's time to turn off the tube and get a massage or something. You act like it's a rigged presidential election in a banana republic.

They were both good; they both deserved it. There were 12 million votes between them. Have you ever tried to organize 5 people to do something in concert? Good luck getting 12 million to be part of a useless conspiracy.

Calm down.

gina Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I was voting for contestant #2 and my votes went to contestant #1. Anyone else have this problem?

gina Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I am sorry David A didn't win. It makes me wonder about the voting process. My vote went to Contestant #1 several times when I was voting for #1. I checked the number I was calling and it was for #2. Anyone else have this problem? Seems strange that DC won by 14mil votes... DA got the kiss of death when the judges called his win on Tues... Congrats DC, I just think DA should have won...

Brian Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

Lil Archie can sing one style. DC can sing ballads, rock, etc. ... DA is talented and can sing, but DC is way more versatile. The right two made the final, and the right David was the right winner.

Nancy O Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I believe that Simon Cowell lost it for David A. He made comment after comment how David A was the better and I believe the fans decided that Simon was not going to sway them. David A was such a graceful loser and I wish him well. He is young and I am sure that many good things will happen for him title or not. David C was just ok for me, don't like his style of music nor his hair cut. He was fortunate enough to live in the larger state that had more people. Don't know if I will watch another year as I believe it is more a popularity contest than talent. Look at Taylor Hicks, what happened to him, he won but had little talent.

George Zman Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

Tough choice - but DA better voice than strained DC - DA entire life is music - not bartender rocker DC. I am disappointed DA did not win - I think it is all sex appeal - DC will not be known in three years.

ritchie Thu, May 22, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

The wrong David won and anyone with any sense at all should know this. Forget about David A's age and staying in school and such garbage. He should have won and the are two reasons and two reasons only as to why he lost. I wish people would pay attention to what is going on and they would realize this. The first reason is where they live. David C's state of Missouri has about 14 million people more than David A's state of Utah. I believe Missouri is ranked 4th in the nation as compared to Utah being around 34th. This fact alone gives him a victory. But, I think the most unfair reason is the voting time period. David A. has a lot of younger fans. To have four hour to vote is ridiculous and not thought out at all. That gave David C. a completely unfair advantage. Who knows how many more millions of votes David A. woul have got if the east coast didn't have to stay up until 1am to vote. Teenagers have school on thursdays and millions of votes for David A. went to bed between 11pm and 1am

Diana Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

As both contestants had great instruments only one could win. Cook has proven to be more diverse. I think by the reaction of David A he may have been relieved not to have to continue on for now. He is young and has a lifetime ahead of him. I believe his good sense will help him to finish school and find the right time to utilize his wonderful talent. Cook is ready for whats ahead of him at this moment.

Listen up! Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

All of you Cook-hating sore losers need to show a little respect. Archie had no problem with him winning, so why not follow his lead. You think he wants his fans hating on Cook? No, because he's a nice kid, unlike some of you childish ranters.
These 2 guys are class acts. It's time their true fans started showing some class too.

Mike Thu, May 22, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

I liked David A. Not the best singer by any means, but I always pull for the good guys. But the judges simply made it to where I could not vote for him. They annointed him the winner from the beginning and I got so sick and tired of their pampering him. I actually didn't like David C in the beginning. But he grew and progressed and by the end I was pulling for him to win it. It all worked out great if you ask me. For once America got it right and I'm truly shocked!

Coreen Gonzalez Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

David Archuletta was robbed, i will never watch American Ido again, it is fixed.
David A. your the real winner!
Coreen Gonzalez

dee rarasati Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

To me, David Cook is the winner, no matter what. But both Davids were great performers, this season is the best after the 2nd season.I'm not Carrie fan, still think that Bo Bice was the true idol.I hope Clay Aiken would perform to.once more David Cook rocks! U r the idol!

JonasJunkie Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

YAY!! So excited!! I LOVE the JoBros!

Ray Wed, May 21, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

It is a shame there is only one of the Davids that should win and it is Artchie, he will sell songs much better Josh Groban, Frank Sinatra , and Elvis come to mind not a band member both are good guys tho

val Wed, May 21, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

David cook represents the average guy. He's a bartender and has experienced life's ups and downs and struggles. I'd like to see him win. He's worked hard. David A. is like one of those children that have grown up competing in endless singing and talent shows and have been molded by their parents. He lacks the ability to relate to the rest of the world, like a bubble boy, but hey he's got it in the bag and that will be best for both of them.

linda Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Yes, I'll admit that DA was better then DC last night, but I still think DC should win American Idol. This is not a personality contest but who has the most talent. DC showed consistantly more versitility and vocal range then DA. He can sing anything from rock to bach. He has clearly a larger fan base. I'm confident that his CD will be orginal and diverse. DA's CD may prove to be boring and filled with the same sweet songs. Doesn't it bring to mind Clay Akin?

Reply to: kodi Wed, May 21, 2008

kodi says: You have got to be kidding me? Archie did a knockout? PLEASE....the kid cannot enunciate his way out of a box!
He has not grown at all...same voice, different week. So frustrating.
Go David Cook!!!!

Nissa says:

1. Did you watch AI last night?
Obviously you must have seen something other than what I did.
Cook sucked more yesterday than he has the whole season.
Poor vocals & not every song is meant to be a "Cook-rock" creation. All three of the judges seemed to like David A much better..& they know talent.

2. He does change songs up when he sings them. He is doing no worse than Mr. Cook rocky remakes every single week. I don't see David C. remaking out of his comfort zone with Chris Brown or anything else that actually sounds good.

3. It's all about the past, too. David Archuleta has been consistent throughtout the whole season, very rarely getting any criticism from any of the judges,
unlike Cook's "pitchy."
GoDavidA!

Cinderella6 Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I believe that neither David had ever been in the bottom 3. Am I wrong? Best wishes to either of the Davids-They both deserve to win. These are two completely different guys who have their own style of "Super- Talent and Charisma" May the best man win. David A might be better off a servant of IDOL-hes younger-more time to make his career a smash. David C can definitely make himself a STAR-not being tied to IDOL he may have a happier and easier time of it.

Peggy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

I think David A. has been the best through the all season. He definitely won last night. They both will get a record deal. I think David A. should win. He never was in the bottom. David Cook was once or twice. David Cook has a great voice. Guess we will find out tonight!

Pam Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

As much as I enjoed both, I think little David had a much stronger performance. it really shocked me, as if big David wanted to lose????

Donna Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I think DC should win. He has been consistent throughout this whole competition. If DA wins, someone better be ready to catch him bless his heart, he looked like he was about to pass out last night. Both are great singers and both have awesome careers ahead of them. I love American Idol and anyone that can search and find an artist like Carrie Underwood is okay with me.

EMF Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

YUP...me too...DA Fan Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

You are right....D.A. will take it tonight..........I love his innocense, and how humble he is when anyone says good things about him. He is marketable. D.C. will also do very well in the market. I too will buy from both. Can't wait until their CDs are out. And by the way......OBAMA will be voted in as well!!!! :)

DA FAN Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Everyone just needs to stop the name calling. Both DA and DC are very talented...kids....yes...kids!! Both will go very far, both have different sounds....and yes, I will buy from both. However......DA will take it all the way tonight. He is young and innocent....something that America hasn't seen in decades.....he will the the star!!!!! GO DA!!!!!!! and bless DC

Courtney Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Okay, seriously.
everyone here who is bashing up either david archuleta or david cook, is the people with no lives, not just the people who stay on the phone all night voting. In my opinion, I think David A has the better voice and he'd make the better American Idol, because he's nice to everyone and sincere. It doesn't matter how his dad is, he shouldn't be penalized by that. I agree that Cook does have an AMAZING voice, but I think whoever wins and loses shouldn't be talked poorly about because they are both really good singers.

cynthia Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I think both David's are very talented. Although, David A. has a much more commone voice. David C. has an original voice and I think he faired better throughout most of the competition.

charmaine Voll Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

David cook ...you are the winner all the way....gifted with a wonderful voice and can sing just about anything....with all good wishes, best of luck

Diana Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Hi Nancy! Yes it happens to be more then just us two who believe David Cook may have thrown the show. I have discussed this with numerous people at my work place and friends at thome that believe this to be what has happened. I think his supporters would support him to do this as well do to wanting to see the "David Cook" type of music and not with an American Idol twist on his talents.

Deneese Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

I didn't watch last night because I am so fed up with AI being a popularity contest instead of a talent show. Anyway, I've said that Cook "should" win, but he'd be better off if he didn't. If he did "throw" it, good for him. It could be the wisest decision of his career.

WhatsonPop Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

To Jacob:

Your comment that the wrong people have own and referencing Carrie is simply idiotic. She is the most sucessful idol ever. What a tool you must be.

Nancy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Diana, I said EXACTLY what you said to my husband....I think DC threw the show as well!! I think he will be fine, no matter what....

pete Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

arch ('long and winding road"), jason ("hallajeah"), smithson ("blackbird") and brooke ("you must love me") have original voices and bring new meaning to songs. arch could be another judy garland. the others are talented but their covers never exceed the original recordings.

pete Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

. . . and what's in the contact for the winner and other placers? would it be better to come in second (no guaranteed contract but more independence and just as much tv time up to the finale?). lots of finalists who dont ultimately win end up with contracts.

pete Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

would someone explain the telephone thing? 50 million votes. that's alot of phone calls. no wonder at&t is a sponsor. who's making money off that besides the phone cos and how much? cell phone users use their minutes. text messengers pay a fee.

Cindy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Oh, and by the way -- DIALIDOL has gotten it right all but twice this season. GO DC!!

Cindy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

All you people that think that Archie will make a good, moldable idol should take a good look at his relationship with his father. Until that boy moves away from home he's gonna do what daddy tells him to do -- no chance he will actually follow the advice/instructions of the AI production crew. It will be a fight from day one. At least DC is mature enough to follow instructions and know that this is basically his one big shot -- he ain't gonna blow it. I really hope he wins and I hope next year they fire Randy and/or Paula and/or Ryan (as long as they don't hire the uber-annoying Cat Deely). And it would'nt hurt to limit votes to 5 per phone number. At least then it would be a REAL American Idol and not the idol of a bunch of pre-teens with nothing to do at night but dial and text.

Jacob Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Okay, Archie may have won finale night but overall I think David Cook should win it!! For the past couple of seasons, the wrong people have been getting the title (Carrie, Taylor, and Jordin) and the people who should have won that title (Bo, Chris D, and Melinda) got robbed!! I don't want to see another person get robbed again!!!

caroline guerrero Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

well just to let all you david a. haters i am a 36 year old woman not a a young carzy teenage girl that voted for him more than once....are you guy's crazy david a has pure voice sounds good every time i used to watch him on star search he has come along way and is better than ever!!!!!!!!!!

Nimfa Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

David Archuleta must win! He is young, talented and easy to manage. American Idol is looking for a versatile personality which can be a singer/actor/composer/artist. I can see that to David A.

Nimfa Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

ROBINN Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

it should be David Cook but we all know how it is going to turn out. People are not voting for talent they are voting for David A because he has the teenyboppers vote. I will not watch if he wins .

Diana Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Does anyone think that David Cook threw the show? Once you are announced the "American Idol" you are their possession. You have certain contracted guidelines you must go by. David Cook is too original to be successful if held back concerning his own sense of musical talent. David A. is more of a "Go by the book" kind of guy. David Cook could have easily threw the compitition in order to go out and do his own thing. He could have sung the songs that would have blew David A. away. He chose to keep it simple. We all know he is smarter then that. He kenw what songs America would want to hear as far as his musical instrument and the range he can sing. He chose not to do that and keep a low tone performance. I believe he is wanting to give the title to David A. and go out and do his own thing. He will sell a lot more records then David A. no matter which way the results go. He is smart by throwing the show. Excellent job if so. Rock on David Cook.

carmen Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

AS I was listening to DA singing voice, I can see the invisible aura of a winner or champion, but I would like DC to win because he is the versatile performer and throughout the season , he was more consistent. I got carried away when he shed tears. I think voters didn't get swayed by the comments by the 3 judges esp Simon because they looked back and know what these singers are really capable of.

linda Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

DAVID COOK ALL THE WAY!!!! I don't know about anyone else but tonight if David A. is voted the American Idol, I will shut off my television and think about how many teenyboppers voted more than once for David A.

Cathy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Hands down, the biggest star in the world is William Shatner (in his mind). No, seriously I agree that it's Harrison Ford.

Joanne Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

Personally, I prefer David Cook. He can rock and he can sing ballads. His rendition of Billie Jean blew my mind and his song from Phantom of the Opera gave me goosebumps. David A. has a great voice, but his songs always wind up sounding the same....soft ballads. Last night I think Randy and Simon went overboard with their praise for Archuleta and made David Cook feel like he had no chance. It was very rude and wrong. I also believe you should only be allowed to vote once to make it fair.

You're Crazy Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:50 AM EST

David Cook is a Daughtry wannabe--we've been there done that. David A. will sell more records and he was the best last night.

Contestant #1 Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Does anyone else have 'Thank you for voting for contestant 1, watch American..[click]. Thank you for voting for contestant 1..[Click] Thank you for voting for contestant 1, watch American Idol..[Click}' ringing in their ears? God that guy's good. Judge not on one night..look at overall the guy's got it..big time.

NO WAY Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

Cook can do far more with his voice than DA. His falsetto is amazing, and his notes are never pitchy. DA's runs are amazing, but they are NOT perfect, and he seems to force them and you can almost hear him thinkin 'Gosh I hope I hit this note!'

D Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

Now I understand why Randy loves D'Archie so much! They both love repeat performances... "You could sing the phonebook dawg", "Imagine", "that was molten hot", "Imagine", "mad hot lyrics", "Imagine"

Laurie Idlett Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

Give me a break! David A not articulate? I bet you weren't very articulate at age 17 either. Remember David C. is 8 years older than David A. David Cook sounds exactly the same no matter what he sings--that raspy, moaning voice. Don't get me wrong, I like David Cook, but I think David A. is in a different league. He can do so much more with his voice. I hope he wins.

Kim - Denmark Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

Fantastic - Donna Summer will perform with one of the outstanding tracks from her new CD - Crayons!

I wish, I was in the U.S. to watch it!

Enjoy!

Aiden Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

David COOK is the winner,he's versatile a truly stage performer who brings something new and life in the stage, that's what American should vote for .Not a cutiepie and boring kid who's a ballader that's too common and boring.D.A makes me sleep you know. What you think America?Nevr make a mistake again open your EARS!!!!!!!!

Lauren - to THEA Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

SCROLL DOWN

Lauren Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

GO DAVID COOK!!! He's passionate, soulfull, and can talk like a human being. DA has a good voice, that's about it.

Perkle Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

Don't know how accurate DialIdol has been this season, but it shows Cook winning with a wide margin. I really hope Cook wins but I won't be upset if David A does. At this point, they both have a shot at a real career. Just depends on what they make of it.

Pam Wed, May 21, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Carrie Underwood

kodi Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

You have got to be kidding me? Archie did a knockout? PLEASE....the kid cannot enunciate his way out of a box!
He has not grown at all...same voice, different week. So frustrating.
Go David Cook!!!!

Clint Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:19 AM EST

ok so maybe the day wasnt David cooks - I am a huge David Cook fan- sitting here in India its not just a feeling its a surety that David Cook is going to sell far more regardless of the result ...., it will feel good to be part of the legion that votes him in -

also, I dont know if the judges steer the idol ship, but where I am Id rather give it to Cook for consistent performances right through

besides theres something about Archie that I dont like - its the coy, silly , back yard boy face that charms .... David Cook is genuine all the way for me and his voice versatile and consuming

without meaning to emote, an earnest appeal - Vote for David Cook, hes genuine, brave and an artist!

Do you hear me O land of the free and the home of the brave?

Mikael Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

The Queen Donna Summer is there - It's more than great

Cindy Bowersock Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:10 AM EST

I agree with paul 100%. I am tired of the poularity contest instead of the artitical contest. i am also sick of randy and paula. I don't think I can take another year of them. They never give worthwhile advice to the contestants.

Bruno Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

OH My God! Donna Summer is there?
She's the greatest ever!!!!
I'm from Italy but in US for work this week, so lucky to see her performing on AI. Stay tuned she's a blast.

oldenough Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:54 AM EST

I think that it should be DA that wins because that will give him a year to grow into being famous under the protective hood of AI. DC is ready to move on and coming in second will give him more freedom

Paul Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:41 AM EST

They are two very different artists...both with great futures no matter what happens. David Cook will probably be a bigger record seller, but Archie won last night by far...he seemed to really want it badly and put his heart into it. I just hope his obsessive stage Dad gets out of his way in the future.

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:37 AM EST

I believe the night went to David A, but I think in part that was due to the song choices. I think Davic Cook is a better artist and will be more commercial because he is diversified. There is just something about David A for me...I never liked him.

Elizabeth Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:21 AM EST

Archie joins the Jonas Brothers for a number and all of America will hear a high-pitched squeal from sea to shining sea.

Shannon Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

Oh, great. It's the Jonas Brothers.

Thea Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:27 AM EST

HELP- for some reason when I click on the links for yesterday's recap, or the Davids' Q&A, I get the normal EW frame of the page but NO text of the article.
Anyone with the same problem? can someone post the text here PLEASE??? thanks

cjs Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

This won't happen, but in a more perfect world, it would end in a tie. They both deserve to win.

Cherelle Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

I haven't yet seen the final performances but I love them both. I have always liked David A from the first moment I saw him perform whereas, David C has progressed and was never one of my favourites from the start but he has grown on me.
I think they are both deserving winners and the only thing im glad for is that stupid fake dreadlock talentless man Jason finally got kicked off!!!!

hugs Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:03 AM EST

Both David's are very talented, and it's a hard choice to make, who should win, but I have been an Archuleta fan since day one, and that's where my final vote has gone. He is so humble, and so sweet, he'll go far,IF dad, doesn't mess things up for him.
Cook! No problem, he has a great future, no matter how the votes go.

Dean Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:12 AM EST

I think David C should win based on overall performances for the entire season. However,David A crushed him tonight, and probably will win.Randy needs to buy a book of quotes. He says the same thing over and over again-" You could sing the phone book".He sounds like a broken record.

Lee Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

I don't see why Simon was gushing over Archie. The kid can sing, but all he sang were ballads tonite, which didn't really show how well-rounded he is. Not only did Cook take chances, but he showed what a true artist he is. If Cook doesn't win, it only goes to show what a clean-cut smile can do for you.

thevisitor Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

Instead of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Look For," I would have had David C. sing "One Tree Hill." Even though both songs are from the same album, I can see why Clive Davis selected ISHFWILF. It went to #1 and is more well known. However, David C. would have hit the ball out of the ballpark with his passion and expertise on OTH.

cruzceleste Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:27 AM EST

That finale was amazing, Archie was unbeliveble, all his sing has so much feeling I can understend why he almost cry after every song, they were so perfect I cry all the way, he should win...

jabo Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:05 AM EST

Best thing about the end of AI is that I won't have to hear, or see, David Cook's weird looking head again.
Even Cook knows Archuleta can sing circles around him.

Tiffany Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

I'm a bit annoyed with some of these comments.
David Archuleta was clearly overwhelmed. I'm not seeing how he is "not right". He was so shocked from getting good reviews, so overwhelmed to be in the finals...its all happening to him so fast. He was in a state of shock at those moments. And he is an undeniable talent. Simon may think Cook will win, but its not like he's going to be dishonest.

chris Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

e! says george michael is going to be the big star on finale

To those of us who know Archie, to suggest he is mentally challenged is about as insensitive as you can get. Don't mistake his humility and shyness for a disease, it's beneath all of us. Otherwise I like them both, I'll be buying both their cd's.

Jon Lee Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

It's funny to see all of these "professionals" blogging about what they know about the music industry. I understand everyone has an opinion. But serious, who really knows (from the public or even the record execs.) who going to be a star or marketable. It seems to me like that both could go on to be good; or both could flop! You never really can tell. Oh course there are people out there like Clive Davis and others that are great judges of talent; but honesty most people (including most of these bloggers and me) do not really know.

Jess Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Hey LB how do you know that Cook is up in the votes is all I want to know Thanks

Jess Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:33 AM EST

So every one seems to be for Mr. Cook well out of everything atleast little David had some emotion about doing this and his dreams coming true Cook just acts like he is all that and already there so little David deserves this and should win it all with tonights performances he crushed cook 10-1 tonight and there is doubt about that and for boring personality Simon is not one to talk almost puts me to sleep if not for Randy and Paula he would work better then ambien!!!!We will see who sells more albums when they put out their first singles oh i bet LITTLE DAVID WILL

Rinat Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

What's up with the judges tonight??!! Can they stop with the Archuleta pimping already??!! He's so borring!

LB Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

"At the moment, Cook is up in votes, so Simon's reverse psychology seems to be working."

It's so stupid! Cook is up in votes because he's better and not because of Simon!!..

Diana Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

And how do you know whos up in votes are we reveling the winner early David C is cocky man who thinks he is above anybody in the world it seems like he deserves to lose and I will NOT be buying his album ... thanks for letting me know the results though so I can pass the word...

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

So we know Simon clearly wants Cook to win.

Yet he praises Archuleta BIG-TIME on the finale. Everyone's like Whoa whoa, Why?!

Maybe because by praising Archuleta so much, 1) Arch-fans will not feel as pressured to vote, and 2) Cook fans will be more determined to vote.

At the moment, Cook is up in votes, so Simon's reverse psychology seems to be working.

Reverse psychology. That's all it is.

David Archeleta Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

To the blogger who wrote that I should run because my father was coming, you've got it all wrong. I don't run when my father's coming, I swallow and wipe my face.

lynn Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

I don't understand how David A. made it this far. Yes, his voice is easy on the ears but he has absolutely no emotion or passion. He actually sounds a little mentally challenged. My heart goes out to him as I think he's crying out for help. This boy is not right!

Don Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

I couldn't believe that finals show tonight. I was expecting David Cook to shine, but, in fact he didn't. Archie won the show. "knockout" according to Simon. I started watching thinking these were even, but was surprised to sse Archuleta clearly the winner tonight. Is he marketable? You bet he is! Three winning performances tonight from David Archuleta!

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

Actually.. david archuleta is the most marketable... his audience is the same (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) audience as miley cyrus and the jonas brothers.. some of miley's hits are actually ballads.. and look at her.. 1 million dollars a week

Nena Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

I would like to have a whole finale with Melinda Doolittle. Remember her?
That lady really can sing! OK, may be her and David Cook...

Boo Radley Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

I found it hilarious when Ryan said that the winning spot of Idol (or something to that affect) was only reserved for superstars. Then, they flash pictures of Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry. Clearly, the winning spot is also reserved for Ruben, Fantasia, and Jordan who are not superstars.

Boo Radley Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

The thing about David Archuleta is: would you actually buy an album of his? What kind of songs would he record? Covers of famous ballads? He's not contemporary. A good singer but not really marketable.

JamesB Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

The Top 12 sign a contract giving AI/19 the right their first record deal. AI/19 isn't going to get Cook get away.

Merry Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

David Cook should win. David A is a kid with no idea's of his own. A a voice is not the only thing you need to be a star. David Cook is the best all around star with idea's and songs of his own. He know how to put on a show and he does not play it safe all the time he knows how to take changes and that is what SHOW BIZ IS ALL ABOUT.
David A need to cute the apron strings. LIKE BIG TIME.... I WOULD NEVER BUY LISTEN OR WATCH ANY THING OF HIS YET ........ COME BACK IN A COUPLE OF YEARS WHEN YOU ARE ALL GROWN UP.

Gen Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

Could David A be more bland. Journalists will want to kill themselves trying to get anything out of him. They better give him the questions in advance so someone can feed him the answers.

Jason Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

btw - in atlanta we had a blackout so couldnt watch the show....does seem like cookie may have tried to 'lose' tonight...i find it interesting that simon seemed to push archie so much tonight when on ellen today he said cookie would win....and cookie seems so much more marketable where archi will turn into another clay

matt Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

I think a great surprise would be JHUD - JENNIFER HUDSON...Shes on the Sex and the City soundtrack with "All Dressed in Love" and thats coming out in another week plus shes announced her first single SPOTLIGHT off her self titled album....Would love to see her come back to the IDOL stage...would be great exposure for her singing and would prove that the Oscar winner doesnt think shes too good for idol...Havent heard anything about it so doubt it will happen but hope the producers at least offered her the chance to launch her solo career on the AI finale...It would be great and the fans would LOVE IT. Plus after so many AI contestants failing or getting dropped by their labels it would be a boost to credibility!@

MC Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Go Cook!!! BUT Win Archuleta!! THEN Cook won't have to do AI's bidding!

Mary in TX Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

I've read on several sites that DC's "Still Haven't Found..." is the first U2 song cleared for performance on AI. Wrong, wrong, wrong: Elliott Yamin and Mary J. Blige did "One" on the Season 5 finale.

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:21 PM EST

I'm sure someone has posted this already, but TMZ says that George Michael will also be performing at the finale.

wc Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

david A, U are the best!!!!!

OMGGGGGGGGGGG Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

they are too good to be there, but still...

ZZ TOP!!!!!

rodney Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

AI needs Carrie Underwood she will be a star for many years to come in music., The lady is and always will be the most successful.

andrea Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

I WISH THE PRODUCERS WILL HAVE A SHOW FOR OLDER ADULTS I WOULD SO AUDITION FOR IT!! i'M 34 AND STILL HAVE MY GROOVE!! lol!!

andrea Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

hmm..calling to vote..getting busy signal..frustration... Well Unfortunately based on performances I really think Archuleta will get it, Do you think Cook fixed it so he wouldn't get stuck in an awful idol contract? I hope if anything he will follow the Daughtry route(who should've one.) I will see Cook at the Grammy's. Don't forget the little kids and screaming girls are going to vote for Archuleta!! I'm not really upset either way, both will do good.

Ann Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

Dial Idol says Cook is the winner.

David Cook's wife Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

It's so clear that David Cook really doesn't need to win AI. In fact, I think he'll do better if he doesn't. Maybe that's the reason Simon was SO over the top with his praise of David Archuleta. Clearly, the folks at AI are trying to increase their dwindling viewership among the tween/teen set.

Meg G Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Think I'll miss the finale. Can't take the Jonas Brothers.

Meg G Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

This finale was pretty boring. The boxing opener was awful. Does Cook want out? His comment at the end was well put. He learned three new songs for tonight, unlike his competition. I watched nineteen of Cook's AI performances tonight, and he clearly deserves to win.

Sean Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

To All those who bash Carrie Underwood for constantly appearing on Idol when asked. I say good for her, at least she knows what show made her career. Unlike that utter *itch Jennifer Hudson, who would be waiting tables if not for Idol. And yet turns down requests to perform for Idol and bashes the show. She'll be a hasbeen washed up actress in 5 years while Carrie will still be ruling the Country charts!

d k Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

to Kone- hoping they sing together? have you watched the the train wrecks that are shown at the beginning of each episode? Please spare us from anymore of those horrid production numbers.

EricMontreal22 Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

So pleased the Donna Summer rumours from last month seem to be true. I can't imagine better exposure for her excellent "comeback" CD out this week (that Ent Weekly has all but ignored...)

Kone Tue, May 20, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

They said.... "All of the top 20 2008 songwriting finalist are "AMATEURS". So would someone please, please find one amateur in this bunch, ok? How many will it take till someone admits this is fraud? 1. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting Finalist (Andy Zulla) is an engineer on Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Diana DeGarmo CD's. 2. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting Finalist (Windy Wagner) is a backup singer on the NEW Clay Aiken CD. 3. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting Finalist (Ryan Gillmor) wrote the theme song for the Fox television show "Unhitched". 4. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting Finalist (Dan Yessian) wrote jingles for Ford Motors. 5. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting Finalist (Luke Ebbin) is a producer on Austalian Idol 1st place runner-up Shannon Noll's CD. 6. Top 20 American Idol Songwriting WINNER (Regie Hamm) is a co-writer on the NEW Clay Aiken CD and he's also a co-writer of the WINNER of 2007's American Idol Songwriting Contest Scott Krippayne......Anybody see a pattern yet?

MsDaisy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

Randy, dude, dawg, please look in the overused cliche phone book for some new material.

atskooc Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

i would like to say that with the boxing-themed introduction to tonight's show, "american idol" has just jumped the shark.

Liz Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

I am really looking forward to the finale! I don't really know who will win but my favorite is David Cook.

Amy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

Kelly's like royalty since she's the original. Okay, her latest wasn't so hot, but she'll work it out. C'mon give her some props. Underwood and Cook would be an interesting pair up. How about Clay and Carly? Just don't bring back Rubin or Fantasia(until she gets rid of that crazy frosting on her head!).

Holly Tue, May 20, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I hope Clay is on and does Bridge over Troubled Waters.

ewok Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Carrie Underwood - always great
Kelly Clarkson - that would be stellar
Daughtry - same as above
Kelli Pickler - ummmmm....no
Jonas Bros. - ummmm...NO

kit Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Only one I want to see is Clay.

Lila Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I see the kiddies got their hands on the family computer again.

AC Tue, May 20, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Am I the only one hoping that Kelly Clarkson will do a duet with David Archuleta since he sang for her all those years ago? I also think it would be cool for a Cook/Clarkson duet because I can see them rocking out to Since U Been Gone!

Justin Guarini Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I will be there too - I'm one of the bathroom attendants. "Fresh towel Justin", that's what they call me, because I always have the freshest towels.

Pam Tue, May 20, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

As long as David Cook sings and ultimately wins Idol, heck....they can even have Taylor Hicks on

John K Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Good to see Carrie will be there - she's without a doubt the most successful of the Idols, especially sales-wise. She's a star even if she doesn't come back but it's good to see her throw a thankyou to Idol for making her the star she is.

Rest of the show sounds good as well.

vw Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

don't care,no way,no how anymore. they've been very succesful @ turning a good show into a complete turnoff.

Shari Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

The only one I want to see take the stage is David Cook. Anyone else is cake.

Ladyin red Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Ladyin red Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Dart...I think Squirrelly meant that a U2

Ernesto Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Daughtry and Clarkson...the only real idols to come out of that show....don't care for the Jonas Brothers, everything else sounds cool, specially ZZTOP!!!

MsDaisy Tue, May 20, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

I am not a Carrie Underwood fan, but to minimize her career by comparing her to a "never was" like Drew Lachey is just ridiculous.

Corran Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

I honestly dont understand the concern for the ratings dip. American Idol is still the #1 show, and the reason the ratings are so low is because they are EVERYWHERE. Every tv show has lower ratings than it did in previous seasons. With peoples interests in tv declining thanks to tivo and on demand, as well as the writers strike, its obvious that they declined. Nothing to do with the quality of idol. That only happened in Season 3 (yucky season).

MPN Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

I don't know how anyone can compare Carrie Underwood to Drew Lachey. Carrie has only sold around 10,000,000 CDs in about 2 1/2 years, recently headlined her 1st tour and was inducted into the Grand Old Opry. She seems to be sincerely grateful to her fans for her success and does not appear to take anything for granted.

Steverino Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

The show will be just fine, no matter what, as long as they GET RID OF those moronic arm-waving empty-headed bimbos up front!

To: Carrie's Gross From: Sonya Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

I guess you did not hear that Carrie just won CMA's Female Vocalist of the Year among other numerous awards. I think she has moved on; just thankful to her start in life unlike Kelly Clarkson.

Weed Killa Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Carrie Underwood is and will continue to be under contract to Simon Fuller, which is why she and a slew of other former contestants make appearances...theyre required to.

mimi Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

yea... fading into oblivion = winning multiple country music awards and selling billions of CDs. There is no way Carrie is fading away anytime soon... st don't think "Carries Gross" is listening to country music at all.

Scott M. Anna Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

"They both won their seasons, but don't know how to let go and move on with their lives!!!!"
What planet do you live on. Carrie has far and exceeded moving on. She has sold millions of cd's, and won every award except the Oscar. Do a Google search on Carrie Underwood, and you will see how she has branched out in her life, and MOVED ON.

Dart Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

RE: the comment from "carrie's gross"; I am not a country music fan, but Carrie U. is a major star, and good for her that is willing to play on AI as a nice gesture, I don't think "fading into oblivian" is happening any time soon! I would love to see Josiah Lemming play tonight, he is definitely the one that got away this season- what were they thinking?

DOROTHY Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

This has been driving me nuts all season. Why does Simon keep his elbow on poor Paulas chair?Doesnt it drive her batty?

Brenda Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Oooo, I hope that U2/David Cook rumor is true! And he can play Edge's guitar riffs himself. That's a dream come true. As for Carrie, she's never forgotten where she came from. Remember she had never even been on a plane before she competed on Idol, so she isn't one to put on airs about the show.

sgl853 Tue, May 20, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Gross-you are totally wrong. Carrie knows she owes everything to American Idol, so coming back is her way of giving back. Carrie is at the top right now and could just as well snub the show, but she has more class than that.

I'm not much of a Carrie Underwood fan - though she sings very well and is gorgeous - but I think she comes back more as a "thank you for launching my career" than a hope to not be forgotten.

I read somewhere that the So You Think You Can Dance kids are performing in the opening.

I still think David Cook's version of FTEISYF was over 2 octaves, and he started out high on this song, too.

I'm more excited about seeing David Cook sing than any of those "stars." David Cook will be singing "Always Be My Baby" as a duet with Mariah Carey (that's what I heard). And I read on foxnews that David Cook is the first contestant to get a U2 song cleared to sing on idol, "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For." Another really hard song to do, hmmmm. I bet David Cook can pull it off. He pulled off "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" Aerosmith's hit by D. Warren. DC pulled off "Music of the Night" and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"--I even thought this one was going to be a struggle for David. But nope, he did all of these songs effortlessly, like he was meant to do it all his life!

"Who will take the stage at the finale - Simon Cowell's pride and joy Carrie Underwood, who seems to never turn down an Idol request, was announced as a special performer..."

Boy, you got that right!! It's like she's so afraid of fading into oblivion that she takes every opportunity to be on the show to make sure people still remember she's around. Carrie Underwood is to American Idol what Drew Lachey was to Dancing with the Stars. They both won their seasons, but don't know how to let go and move on with their lives!!!!
