Jimmy Fallon to take over for Conan O'Brien in '09

May 12, 2008, 02:08 PM | by Jennifer Armstrong

Categories: TV Biz

Jimmyfallon_l Jimmy Fallon, as previously reported, will take over for Conan O'Brien when the red-headed comedian makes his long-planned move into Jay Leno's seat at The Tonight Show. NBC made the deal official at a press conference today with Fallon and exec producer Lorne Michaels. Further details were in short supply, from Fallon's contract length and salary ("I keep asking Lorne, and he keeps telling me not to worry about it," Fallon cracked) to show specifics and the key question of when the transition will take place.  "Sometime in '09," hedged Michaels, who'll produce both O'Brien's and Fallon's shows. "Probably the first six months. Maybe the second six."

Why so cagey about the exact date? The net's still negotiating to keep Leno in the family and avoid having late-night's most-successful host be most-successful at another net. Co-chairman of NBC Entertainment Ben Silverman told EW.com that doing so could involve primetime, cable, syndication, or some combination thereof. "We love Jay and want to keep him around," Silverman reiterated.

Fallon, meanwhile, promised to make his "the best show for everyone to fall asleep during" and said he's been doing standup lately to get into practice. "We're not going to reinvent the wheel," he said of the show's format. "But when Conan took over for Letterman, he wasn't Letterman. Oh, and all the furniture will be suspended six feet in the air."

theres no way late night w/jimmy fallon lasts 6 months. if i was a bookie i'd set the over/under at 3 months. the scottish dude isnt funny and he's taken alot of conans viewers. conan is still pretty funny.

jay Fri, May 23, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

jimmy fallon blows hard. he hasnt done anything remotely funny in his whole career, not to mention he's disappeared from the map over the last few years (thank god). i cant wait to see fallon laugh at his own jokes (by own, i mean jokes that someone else wrote) and bore the crowd to death. i think conan is alright, a bit of an old hat. all true late night talk show junkies know letterman will always reign supreme (although daily show and especially colbert report are far more entertaining)

DCsilb Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I will never watch late night again.

E man Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

CONANS THE MAN!!!there is no way Jimmy fallon will come close to filling his seat.

CN Wed, May 14, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Conan is ridiculous, not funny, too chaotic for late late night. Letterman will now rule that time slot. Fallon - we'll see.

PROOF OF AMERICAN IDOL FRAUD!!!!

This is the second year in a row that American Idol has had a
songwriting contest. Since the contest ended last year I've
researched the contestants from last year and this year....FYI there
were over 25,000 entries last year at $10.00 for each song. 20 songs
were then chosen out of the 25,000 for an online vote. The winner's
song is then performed on the American Idol Finale. The problem I
have is that one of THIS years Top 20 Finalist is a Co-writer of LAST
years Top 20 Winner.

Somebody from American Idol has some explaining to do.

THERE IS A LOT, LOT, LOT MORE!!!!!
FOR ALL THE FACTS PLEASE VISIT....

Pamela Tue, May 13, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

For crying out loud, Conan has been on the bottom rung for a long time. He definitely isn't funny, nor is he cute for handsome in anyway. His humor is so stupid that and eight year old might appreciate him. Also he has had the same bits on his show since he started, and I couldn't hack it then.

Paul Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Jimmy Fallon makes Carson Daley look absolutely brilliant.

mark in nyc Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Jimmy was on Conan last night and besides laughing too hard at his own jokes and trying too hard for Conan to like him he also did his cutting edge impression of Regis! This guy can't miss!

Jorge Tue, May 13, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

Jimmy Fallon not having any memorable characters on SNL? Not true. One of the most memorable characteristics of Jimmy is that he was funny in everything he did, in or out of character, just like Sandler. He is the perfect choice for Conan's replacement.

Soquel Tue, May 13, 2008 at 03:40 AM EST

I think the biggest problem NBC has is Carson Daley..That show makes me hate that im an insomniac. He's aged so much sense MTV its crazy. As for Fallon I wish him the best but I do think he's gonna have a hard time holding a show by himself. I hope Conan doesn't change I like him just the way he is!

PazPraSempre Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

Fallon was funny, but with the other members of SNL. (He and Tina Fey are my favorite Update team ever). There is no way he can carry a show by himself.
I am very sad that Conan will leave Late Night. Because he is on the earlier time slot, he probably will have to tone down his comedy.

Brad Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

Jimmy Fallon?!!! Are you serious?!!! That in and of itself is joke! Not only did he single-handedly ruin every potentially great sketch he was in on SNL, but every movie movie he has been in has been so bad that it makes me want to punch myself repeatedly in the crotch until I pass out! That's how bad he is! The only way they could have made a poorer decision on who to take over for Conan would have been to have Speed Racer take over!! COME ON!!!!!

Jessica Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

Fallon does not deserve to be a late night host. They should just keep it the way it is. Jay is great and Conan is great, Carson not so much. Replace Carson with Fallon if you are doing any replacement.

Jessica Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

onestell Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

Jimmy seems like a nice enough guy, but this is from the same people who fired Norm McDonald from "Weekend Update". Of course, Conan was not exactly a sure thing when he first premiered, so I think I'll stick around to see what Lorne Michaels has in store for us here.

joyisobel Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:11 PM EST

They BETTER move it after June, because that is the year I turn sixteen and can FINALLY see Conan live. I have been waiting for this for forever. Unless they decide to switch it around and have The Tonight Show be shot in NY. That'd be okay. But seriously? Jimmy Fallon?

none Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Give him a chance. I still remember him from Weekend Update on SNL, and I thought that was pretty funny.

Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

I just find you all funny for dissing Jimmy Fallon... do any of you really know anything about him? He is a writer for Saturday Night Live along with Tina Fey, his best moments on SNL were on Weekend Update, a skit similar to a Talk Show..His stand up CD is also one of the best selling comedy CD's when it was released I believe three years ago... not to mention his ability to do impersenations

Dude Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

Fallon was never funny. It was the people around him. Even Justin Timberlake was funnier. Give him the talk show slot. Bring Sexy Back to Late Night. (I like Kimmel but he's not NBC mainstream-appropriate.)

Jon Stewart and Colbert must make a lot of money on COMEDY CENTRAL. Were they ever considered for the NBC 11:30 and 12:30 shows? They should have been.

I don't even see how Conan is going to be the 11:30 guy. Oh damn you Johnny Carson for leaving us! :{

Hubert Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

Why not see if Craig Kilborn's interested? I always enjoyed the Late Late Show far more when he was host than I ever have Conan. Or how about a woman? Kristen Wiig? Crista Flanagan? Nicole Sullivan? Or dare I dream... Tina Fey?

Two Times Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

Really?! Ugh - I liked Jimmy Fallon well enough on SNL... but mostly due in part because of the other talent. Was Colbert in the mix?? He should be! ...maybe after a quick, short stint, they'll replace Fallon with Colbert. Fingers crossed he gets replaced regardless... and quickly.

Alex Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon sucks. I know others have said it. But let's say it again. He sucks. Hopefully he will turn out to be pretty good. But at present he's terribly unfunny. So much for NBC looking for a "talented" replacement.

Delon Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Worst.Decision.Ever.

Tina Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon = Lame. Might as well just bring Arsenio out of hiding.

Tim G Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Fallon is hilarious....c'mon don't you remember the Barry Gibbs talk show skit? Conan is funny too but he appeals to a different demographic then Leno. That's the scariest part of this whole thing for NBC. Their going to lose Viagra and Metamucil as sponsors.

j diaz Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Conan is not funny, and now he will go and ruin the tonight show. So the NBC brass replaces talentless guy with a less talented person. You will kill both programs. Late Night with David Letterman is looking better and better.

gregg todd Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

"What are you laughing at? And don't say Jimmy Fallon or I'll know you're lying!" --- Homer Simpson. That's how not funny Jimmy Fallon is. His unfunniness has been forever enshrined into America's longest running social satire cartoon. I give him less than one season.

Deborah B. Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I have never cared for Conan. Craig Ferguson is much better. I also like Jimmy Kimmel.

Ed Weirdness Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Must be a rule at NBC. You have to make a movie that sucks, and then you move into one of the late night chairs!

PatW Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

So, it takes about 15 yrs to forget what happens when you put an unfunny person into the hosting position at a talk show ... Chevy Chase Show, anyone?

thomps222 Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

What is NBC thinking? I predict that Fallon won't last too long and they'll end up promoting Carson Daly into that time slot. Jimmy Fallon is just not that funny, just watch that episode of family guy where Peter Griffin picks him apart and kicks his ass.

Mei Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I like Fallon in small bits but don't believe he can carry the weight of a show by himself. I like Conan and, as other posters here, hope he isn't forced to lose too much 'edge' in the move to the very 'bland' Tonight Show slot. 'Bland' is exactly how I've always felt about Leno's humor (though I think the man himself seems nice) so I wan't surprised by his being picked to replace Carson. Amy Sedaris is great even though I don't enjoy her 'Candy' character (Have you read her cookbook? It's really funny, especially for a -real- cookbook). She is also extremely nice and humble in-person. I'm not sure she could pull off a talk show but I'd give her better odds than Fallon. Seth Meyers? He's now head writer at SNL but I can't tell if any of the funny bits are his or not. That's scary since the bulk of the show is still non-funny. Seth is still largely an unknown quantity. In short, I'm glad I'm not the guy at NBC having to pick Conan's replacement...

suibne Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Conan? Just another nail in what used to be free TV's coffin.

adamrich81 Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Ugh. Even the cracks in the article weren't funny. Also, I don't know where you commentors come from, but Amy Sedaris? Seth Meyers? THOSE would be your picks? At least Carson Daly knows how to kiss a celeb's butt, which is the point of the show, and he knows better than to try and be funny. The people these shows appeal to, I would think, would have quite a few years to draw from in choosing their late night bedtime company, anyone but Jimmy Fallon or Seth Meyers. Also I hope Lorne Michaels quits doing...everything...Take a page from Uwe Boll, start a petition.

INSOMNIAC Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

CONAN IS EDGY TO BE SURE AND I WONDER IF HE WILL BE AS INTERESTING WHEN HE HAS TO TONE DOWN HIS HUMOR FOR THE TONITE SHOW AUDIENCE. FRANKLY, I THINK LENO IS MAKING A CAREER-MISTAKE BY LEAVING HIS POSITION OF DOMINANCE, BUT, HECK, I GUESS HE HAS MADE HIS FORTUNE.

Kim Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is hilarious. I used to work for Conan and I think Jimmy will soar in his spot. Now I'm just waiting for Seth Meyers to get a show...that would take me out of retirement!

Brian Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

I am happy that Conan is moving up. I have been a fan of his since his debut. Never liked Leno. And I hope he doesn't stick around and O'Brien get screwed like Letterman did in 93. As far as Fallon is concerned, I am surprised he would be given such a popular show. He is a no talent A__ Clown. Hated him on SNL and I avoided his movies like the Plague.

cady Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

I'm wondering if Conan will be as edgy when he switches over. There's something special about his current timeslot. I rather enjoyed Conan not being the mainstream. Only special people truly appreciate him. Jay Leno has never been my favorite and I don't want Conan to change anything. It's depressing enough that he'll be in LA but I really like the show being sorta cultish. I like that the show doesn't currently revolve around celebrities. I like that the format is based on the brilliant segments written by the brillian writers.

Elizabeth Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Here's hoping Conan continues to be "Conan"... And Dan, two words: Carson. Daly.

elbownito Mon, May 12, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Lame. Jimmy Fallon is lame.
Amy Sedaris would have been my pick.

dan jones Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

I can't believe they're actually giving this talentless hack a show. Seriously, who at NBC thinks this is a good idea and why? Cause every movie he's ever been in has bombed? Because it made it serveral season on SNL without creating even one single memorable character or sketch? Because he's never been funny for even a single second, ever, not once? I seriously predict this will be worse the Chevy Chase's show. NBC needs to have their collective heads examined for this. Jimmy Fallon? Really? Are they on drugs?

It's pretty awesome that I won't have to stay up late to watch Conan anymore, but how will this affect the vibe he had going before w/ 'Late Night'? Is the Max Weinberg 7 coming with him? (Conan & Max's awkward exchanges & the rips towards La Bamba are priceless) Does this mean no more 'In the Year 2000' or any other of Conan's bits? What about the writing staff? Considering how much I dislike Leno's show, I dunno if Conan will be in good hands without at least Robert Smigel in tow. However Conan managed nicely during the strike episodes, so we probably won't have that much to worry about. Either way, congrats to him & Fallon.
