David Cook leads 'American Idol' domination of music charts

May 29, 2008, 08:57 PM | by Chris Willman

Categories: American Idol, Charts, Music Biz

For the moment, it's David Cook's world and we just live — and download — in it. That would be the conclusion to draw, anyway, from this week's digital-songs chart, where American Idol-atry has truly reached critical mass. Cook's TV coronation anthem, "Time of My Life," debuted atop that chart with 236,000 downloads.

But his success hardly stopped there: "Big" David had a total of 14 songs bow on the digital songs chart. His second-biggest single of the week, "Dream Big," bowed at No. 6 with 111,000 sold, and he claimed a third entry in the chart's top 10, selling 98,000 copies of his cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (No. 9). Other Cook entries on the digital-songs chart: his maligned-by-Simon rendition of Collective Soul's "World I Know" (No. 14 with 80,000 sold); "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (No. 21 with 60,000 sold); "Billie Jean" (No. 24 with 56,000 sold); "Always Be My Baby" (No. 29 with 47,000 sold); and "Hello" (No. 32 with 42,000 sold). It's a good sign that, when he gets around to completing an album, Cook should really be able to sell records — in bulk. (Unlike some other recent Idols.)

But Cook wasn't alone in the Idol sales bonanza this week. "Little" David Archuleta's Simon-approved cover of "Imagine" debuted at No. 16 on the digital songs chart with 71,000 sold; his "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" came in at No. 26 with 51,000; "In This Moment" was two spots behind with 49,000; and nine more Archuleta songs appeared in the chart's top 200. Jason Castro was the biggest winner among Idol phenoms whose name isn't David, with a No. 81 bow for his "Hallelujah." Two more Idol contestants broke into the rankings, though low enough to go almost unnoticed: Brooke White had to settle for No. 136 with her version of "Let It Be," which sold 12,000, and Michael Johns' "Dream On" sold a modest 9,000 to enter at No. 187. Another Idol beneficiary: Collective Soul, whose original version of "World I Know" reentered the chart at No. 67 with 23,000 in fresh sales.

Meanwhile, Cook enjoyed the same kind of dominance on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, which combines sales and airplay (and radio has tended to give some Idol contestants trouble in the past). There, he had 11 tunes debut in one week, breaking Miley Cyrus' previous record of six. And not since the Beatles had 14 songs on the chart during one week way back in 1964 has any single performer claimed so much Hot 100 real estate. Simon's last-minute apology is looking smarter by the second, isn't it?

Just Chris Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

It's impossible not to get swept up in this American Idol at least a little bit. It's EVERYWHERE!

Unfortunately, it sucks. God, it sucks. What do you get when you combine a generic sound, a generic look, a lot of hype, and slick studio production? David Cook. America voted for this?

brian Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

David is the best in long time .it's music you can understand and not rap ,your great David

Lisa Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

I agree with Janet>>David Cook has great talent and to tell u all the truth i never watched American Idol until my mom said to me..sit and watch this guy he is great...and from then on i was glued.....he had 1 million of my votes .and that for sure...GO DAVID!!!!!!!!!!

janet Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

I'm married to a rocker frontman. and I know a great voice and major talent, when I see it. David Cook has it all. rock on!!!

Claire Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

It's about time someone has won American Idol based on talent. I am not a rocker but truly believe David Cook deserved to win hands-down. The amount of votes and the difference from first and second place tells it all.
David A will go somewhere as well.
David Cood Rocks!

Tracy Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

David Cook is the most talented Idol they have had to date this guy will sell tons of records.

Joe Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:58 AM EST

Cook is terrible. He is probably the worst Idol winner yet. A disgrace for the franchise.

After the hype dies down he will fade fast.

tammy jo Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

sylvia Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

I find it interesting that for the most part, it is people of the male persuation that are making the negative comments about DC. hmmmmmm....

marti Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

i can not help it {i am JOENSON} over him!!!!

chea Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

grate job kid, my daughter and i were with you all the way. keep up all the good work.you have a wonderfull voice.

ealo Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

I just have to ask a dumb question. Why do they take songs off of I-Tunes that people want? I really don't get it. If it's simply to manipulate what gets downloaded then none of the numbers regarding what got downloaded the most means anything.

By the time I got around to trying to pay for downloads on I-Tunes as my way of saying "thank you" to my favorites, nothing was there. So, I'll do it for free.

Nobody wins here, so if someone has the patience to explain it to me I will be gratefull.

rebecca busby Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

hey david . how are you? i have really enjoyed your sing. me and my exchange student from brasil loved you so much that on the last time to vote for you we voted 200 times just for you to win. now she in gone back home and she tells me that you are going to brasil. i would like you to do something for me when you get there. she will be at your show will you please sing the time of my life for her and tell her that her host mom from alabama asked you sing that sond for her and asked you to say hello because that would mean so much for her and for me. please keep doing a good job. and keep sing you are so wonderful.
thank you,
rebecca busby

Linda Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

I find it astonishing when reading an article about David Cook, that people come and make such negative comments. If you don't like him, then why are you wasting your time reading about him??? People have differing opinions and tastes in music. I love David Cook. I think he deserved to win. I think he is immensely talented. I think he will be a huge star for years to come. I also like David A., Carly, Jason, Brooke, Michael J. I wish them all the success that life has to offer. Just because I prefer David Cook, I don't feel the need to tear down the other Idol contestants. But it seems that everyone that favored David A., has to go Cook-bashing. That's just immature.

Gloria Maxwell Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Iam starved for more Info about David Cook. Thank you to EW for the little I do get. I don't think , I know he is star material.

Wissphoto Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

There are some rough comments about DC's version of the NA. Yes, he started off key, but he corrected it and sang a stripped down version. He didn't put in the stupid diva runs and he also used a mic with no reverb. If you go and listen to DA or Taylor Hick's version of the NA they had reverb in their mics which puts a lot of echo into the song and enhances the overall quality of the performance. I liked that DC sang it straight with no bells and whistles. You can also tell that his voice is shot, and that he could do with some vocal rest.

Brenda Robertson Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

To Pete: I never said I liked his performance when he sang at the NBA. Read all the comments before replying. I never heard it and I didn't say I did. What I said was, he was asked to sing that night at the Royals game but didn't. Then I commented on the article in the paper and what it said. I do know the Royals sold at least 4000 more tickets that night to people that went there to see David Cook and could have cared less about a baseball game. I wouldn't watch any sports game EVER just to hear anyone, including my favorite singers of all time, sing any song and of all songs the National Anthem. That song sucks no matter who sings it. It is a poorly written song. I haven't heard anyone sing it well. All I have to say is wait and watch the record sells and see who sells records and who doesn't!! My money is on David Cook. I think he will out sell David Archuleta easily.

Pete Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

Brenda, that may have been what the paper said, that doesn't mean it's the truth. After being subjected to Cook's horrible rendition of the National Anthem during the NBA play off game I am inclined to agree with Robin 15 on this one. That thing about the kids performing, sounds like something the PR department dreamed up to make David Cook look good so that no one had to hear him sound bad attempting to sing the National Anthem so close to the Idol finals. If you really liked Cook's version of the National Anthem then you are clearly tone deaf because he was off key and hitting flat notes through out that performance. The tremendous strain in his voice as he struggled through the song was just so obvious. He sounded bad, and there's just no getting around that fact. You say you aren't "right or wrong", but on this topic you are definitely wrong. It's not about your preference, It's about his performance, and he was bad. That's the bottom line.

Brenda Robertson Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 03:52 AM EST

To Robin 15 again, I thought Archie was very good but I liked Cook better. I'm not wrong or right, it's just my opinion and my taste. I will buy Cook's CD but I am not sure about Archie's CD yet. I will have to hear it first. I have bought to many AI contestants CD's in the past and I never listen to them. I do have a few I bought that I listen to a lot. Both of the Davids are going to have a great career. I wish the best for both of them. But most of all, I hope they please their fans and give them what they want. I also hope Howard Stern's career goes deeply south soon. I think Howard Stern is a terrible person for trying to ruin a show that gives so many artists such a great opportunity to have a career doing what they love, and entertains so many people and brings families together for at least a few hours a week. He is the one we should be blogging about. Maybe we could all figure out how to get rid of him. My last words, Good luck to both Davids & the other finalists & u 2 Robin.

Brenda Robertson Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 03:28 AM EST

To Robin 15-The reason Cook didn't sing the National Anthem at the Royals game was in Kansas City Star news paper. The Star said he refused because he didn't want to over shadow a youth group already scheduled. U didn't like DC's performance at NBA but that's your opinion, not right or wrong just an opinion. This wasn't the 1st yr contestants sang different songs. Taylor Hicks & Katharine McPhee had different songs, "My Destiny" written by Harry Sommerdahl, Hanne Sørvaag, & Tim Baxter was performed by Katherine McPhee on the penultimate episode May 23, 2006 at the Kodak Theater. Taylor Hicks song was "Do I Make You Proud" written by Tracy Ackerman, Andy Watkins & Paul Wilson of the Absolute production team & co-produced by Dave Way. Bo & Carrie had the same song. Archie's fans voted for him the same as Cook's fans did for Cook. Archie even had people voting for him that didn't like him because the website Vote For The Worst, created by Howard Stern to ruin AI, chose Archie as the worst

robin 15 Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

To Brenda, The reason cook didn't want to sing the national anthem at the Royals game is now painfully obvious. He sang it at a NBA finals game and it just didn't compare to David Archuleta's and would have made him look bad if the two performances had been compared the same night on AI. It also could have been the producers who mid season decided they wanted it to be a real race and put their allegiance and all the manipulations they could think of toward helping Cook. You people out there were so played. This was the first year both contestants didn't sing the same song in the final week. Why? because it would have hurt David Cook. Ratings are everything and Throwing David Archuleta under the bus by spreading rumors, even on the day of his homecoming, was the tactic they went for. Not approving the songs Archie wanted to sing and giving him that stupid producers choice song and not letting him change the version and play the piano, which he wanted to do also stunk. Sorry DA

To: Chris Willman Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

You failed to mention that the non-David contestants had their songs yanked from iTunes before the finale. I still think it is no surprise the David Cook outsold them all, but I think folks like Jason, Brook and Michael would have fared a little better if their songs remained on iTunes.

To: Cookie Crumbles Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

You sounds so bitter.

Cookie crumbles Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

It's very funny that after debuting 14 singles last week all of them have dropped off the charts for week number two. The only one that was still in the top 50 was his debut single which debuted at #3 and already dropped to #9. Prediction: next week that song exits the chart as well. FYI folks if your songs drop down the chart that quickly, as all of Cook's songs have the first week, then people aren't really all that interested. The goal is to rise on the chart each week, not drop off into obscurity. Cook's more like a flash in the pan, not very hot at all. Doesn't do much good to debut on the chart if you can't stay there. So I guess he set another record: most songs to fall off the chart in one week. See how quickly the Cookie crumbles. LMAO!!

Phil Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

I personally wouldn't buy anything from this hack. I can't stand that tired emo rock sound he does for every single song. Everything sounds the same and it's boring bordering on depressing, and that screaming is painful to listen to at times. He really just sounds like he's trying to imitate other popular artists. He's not much of a stand out in th music world, just one of many that are already doing it better. Sorry but he's never going to last because he's not original at all.

Pete Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 07:18 AM EST

It's strange they made a big effort to mention all this fluff stuff but failed to mention Cook didn't debut at #1 on the Billboard hot 100, so he joins Jordin Sparks on the list of winners that didn't debut at #1. They obviously don't want to draw attention to this detail since it looks really bad when even Taylor Hicks manages to debut at #1 one but the newest Idol couldn't pull that off. I don't really think debuting 14 songs on the digital chart is that big of an accomplishment, considering how hard Idol plugged their exclusive digital download deal with Itunes after every performance. In the past seasons they never offered people the chance to purchase the individual performances every week. It's only natural they Idol fanatics would buy the stuff, still wasn't enough to take the top billboard spot though. So he's not as hot as they lead you to believe.

Brenda Robertson Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 12:56 AM EST

I just want to say, "THE BEST MAN WON!!" David Cook seems like a really nice person and he is extremely talented. He wore Lindsey's cancer bracelet and called her on the phone, which made her day. He didn't even know her, he just knew he was her favorite on the show. What a nice thing to do for someone. The Friday that the top three contestants went back to their home towns, David was asked by the Kansas City Royals to sing the National Anthem at the ball game that night. David refused because a youth group had already been scheduled to sing the National Anthem that night and they were there, ready to sing. David said, "he didn't want to over shadow them." I think that is a very classy thing to do. Instead, he sang Take Me Out To The Ball Game after the youth group sang the National Anthem. Wow, I think he deserves to be a giant star and I predict that he will be HUGE! I think at least Carrie Underwood huge and maybe even bigger. He is a class act!!!

Chasee Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

I did not realize that being the winner of AI requires that David Cook explain why he is dating who he is dating to the rest of his fans and why. Get your own dates people and stop focusing so much on just one rocker. How sad for some of you. Need to get a talent and a hobby perhaps and dedicate your time and life to more worthy causes than rock and roll musicians. But that is America after all.

Adam Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Well of course David Cook stood out every week out of the contestants. He was the loudest, consistently had bad outfits and bad hairdos and came up with lots of weekly gimmicks. That is entertainment to some. Go figure. If you love him so much why don't you marry him?

Tara Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Ok Daniel B you really need a life. Spending way too much time analyzing Cook sales and comments on these boards. Geez. Must live a very socially deprived life in your rock and roll world. David Cook is obviously talented, no question, but hey there are many many other rock and roll singers who are also very talented. He happened to get to the top very quickly because he was also a contestant of the most watched reality TV show. So please do go out and buy his CD, when it is available and get a real job now. Who cares really of what you think? Only time will tell. You are not offering him millions anyway, just your comments, and your buying ONE of his CD's. GEEZ.
Now perhaps you can spend just as much time figuring out why our gas prices are so high and put Cook in charge of such???:)

little ol me Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

Just curious as to why Cook's finale song is never played on the radio. I remember hearing Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" every other song when she won but haven't heard Cook's once. I've been out of the message board loop since the finale . . anyone have the answer?

Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 03:52 AM EST

It's awesome that DC is doing so well on the charts. My fave IDOL is CHRIS DAUGHTRY.I wonder who would sell more CDs if they both debuted CDs at the same time.Chris has done very well for himself.

Pelsha Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

For all you people out there adding your two cents here...saying we should get a life and quit obsessing over David Cook...well, obviously you are guilty as well. Otherwise, you wouldn't be looking at videos and comment forums about him. This world really needs more of a live and let live attitude. It really isn't that unusual to have withdrawals when a favorite show has ended. Yes I and many others will miss seeing David C. perform each week. Not many performers stand out as well as he did.

Daniel B Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 02:10 AM EST

Ok I'm calling BS on some of you people who are claiming Cook's accomplishment was somehow 'rigged' or that he was running a one-man race.

So, to Tara, "let's run the numbers"... Yes, let's. Almost a million songs purchased IN ONE WEEK. That doesn't count the number of sales of his downloads in prior weeks (and we know that he's topped the Itunes downloads at least twice before, with 'Billie Jean' and 'Always Be My Baby'.
11 of his songs make the top 100 and EVERY song he ever recorded makes it into the top 125. Song's like 'Hello' are still charting high even though it was released MONTHS AGO. And yet somehow even though he shatters previous records nasty and bitter people are trying to downplay this amazing accomplishment.

As for 'Time of My Life' not hitting Number 1... give me a break. It was only available for HALF THE WEEK and still managed to make number 3 against singles that were available ALL WEEK.

Daniel B Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

Daniel B Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

And as for the BS about 'well none of the other Idols have songs released so they couldn't fairly compete... simply not true. All the contestants prior songs were available for purchase from the beginning of the week until the finale Wednesday night. Now you could fairly claim that both Cook and Archuleta had an advantage in that as they had both been on the show every single week they had more songs to purchase, but that doesn't explain why ALL of Cook's songs charted so well, even the ones that were not critical successes for him on the show, and still outsold even some of the other Idols most brilliant performances. But the other Idols had as much of a chance to sell their former songs as Cook and Archuleta did - all were available until Wed.

After Wed, only Cook and Archuleta had songs available (and the following week Itunes pulled all songs except for Cook's 'Time of My Life') I have issues with the stupidity of American Idol for pulling all those songs...

Daniel B Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

... but that doesn't detract from the fact that during the week in question ALL the contestants had their prior songs available for purchase for the same amount of time.

I'm not knocking the other contestants, I just want to defend Cook. I think several of the other contestants were quite good and if I had to guess I'd say that Carly, Brooke, possibly Michael Johns and even Kristy, and almost definitely Jason will all have successful careers. Syesha and Archuleta I'm not as sure about, though I think Syesha will have a definite fallback career on Broadway, and Archuleta I worry about because the kid is so talented but I feel like he was forced to peak too soon and I hope he doesn't burn out because I think once he grows up a little and discovers who he is as an artist he will be a major success.

I just want to defend Cook, because this is an amazing accomplishment and a sign of just how big his career will be.

Michelle Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

The guy went on one date and you are all already analyzing what he should do and who he should date. One thing is clear. HE WON'T BE DATING YOU! Only gorgeous talented women that will be available, like top musical talent, models and actresses. This is America, you find one rocker american and now the guy is put on the pedestal. Don't forget although you voted for him, he is still the same person as a few months ago, only more popular because of the rock fanatics. I wonder why he never sold his prior CD's (oh wait, he will be adding the songs he could not sell to his new album) WHOOOOOOO WHOOOOO! Don't forget to stay in line to get that first CD. He is also outselling all the other idols because he is the only Itunes AI that is available. DAH!

Adam Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Well if you love him so much why don't you purchase his Itunes? Only 920,000 dowloads and millions and millions of you voted for him. WOW! And the ones that say he had you at hello, PLEASE! You all must be so deprived of attention. He is just another loud rocker. Who the hell cares. He won't date you people anyway. Stop the dreaming. If you have that much time to spend and drool over a rocker singer, why not volunteer your time to a cause that might be worth something and make a difference in someone's life. He is talented, but hey there are millions of talented singers out there. So he got some great attention, with his singing and loud shouting and impressed your average no talent american who can relate. There you have it. The next President rocker for you. And to compare him to the Beatles, give me a break now. OH GOD. DREAMERS DREAMERS DREAMERS.

Tara Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Well let's not make Cook the God's gift to the musical world already. Geez. He is outselling because he is the one from the top 10 whose songs are available for dowloading. Like running a one man race. Of course you will be the winner. Clever marketing from AI producers (take off the competition pimp the rocker before he even won) and let's look at the numbers. This guy had over how many millions of votes, only 900,000 downloads? Hmmm. And the women still dream about dating him, next thing you know, we are declaring this rocker the next saint. Get a life people. He is only another talented rocker who sang on the most popular reality show and won. Taylor Hicks won too. Some of you are just getting too carried away with Cook. Get a freaking life already.

A1Squirrelly_girl Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

David Cook will be greater than the Beatles. I said this weeks ago. Now DC is living it. I'm very happy for him to have all those hits at the top of the charts. He's great, and now everyone else will find out how great he really is. I wish he didn't like KC. Too bad we won't get together because he is rich now, and I don't like rich people. Sorry, Cook. But keep putting out that great music. And don't let KC take advantage of you (don't get good vibes from her).

L Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 02:03 AM EST

Michelle, you're right. Cook needs to dump that hasbeen Kimberly Caldwell. So weird that since this annoucement has come out about the 2, Caldwell decides she wants to work on her music career. Girlfriend needs a real job. She's annoying as a host on TV Guide Network, and I highly doubt she's gonna sell any albums. Also, those who are comparing Cook to Taylor Hicks...I don't think so. AI should have definitely rigged that, because Hicks is an embarrassment to AI for even winning. Cook has TONS more talent. Hicks is nothing but a talentless, old looking man, with ugly grey hair. Hicks SUCKS big time. As big of a fan I am of Idol, I only prefer Idon winners like Kelly, Jordin and Cook. Daughtry is my only favorite that didn't UNFORTUNETLY win, but it goes to show how much of a success you can be without winning the show. I hope Jason can do the same, because Jason and Cook were my only faves on the show this year. Cook deserved to win and I wish him much more success, he deserves it.

Carrie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

I think that Jason's can't be downloaded anymore and if it could he would be the best itunes seller and this is not fair to all the contestants, they should all have a fair chance, so therefore Cook is not the best-he has no competion. Thanks for the comments about Jason's welcome home party, I watched the videos and he has a voice like an angel. He truly deserved this day and thanks to Rockwall for giving this king of the dreads his fair deserved day. I think Jason's Halleuigh and Somewhere over the rainbow are the two most memorable performances on AI this year.

Michelle Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

Jordan was out longer than Cook. Give Cook time, he will outsell everyone..that's if he stops talking about his dating life. Bad timing...being single and available was a big part of his appeal in addition to his amazing voice. He is blowing it by hanging with a fake blond who is D List caliber. Cook is A List.

TeamJordin Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

I just want to say for the record that Jordin Sparks has had two platinum singles.

Just sayin

sam Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

Everything from AI was pulled and they indicated that on the show--they said what was the last day to get them. The only thing still up for Cook is his single. That is always the case for the winner. The competition for AI is over--Cook won.

cruzceleste Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

Someone allready ask it but why Archie´s, Castro´s, Brooke´s, Carly´s aren´t in Itunes anymore... ??????????

If Cook doesn´t have competition who we are to say he is the best, I think you as journalist should say why??????

Heather Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

I read the article and all the comments and was literally brought to tears that my favorite Jason Castro was a hit on itunes and then received such a big celebration in Rockwall. He trully deserved this and I wish him much success. The videos of his live performance was totally awesome. Way to go Jason.

TRACY Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:09 AM EST

WOW, JASON CASTRO AND THATS ALL I CAN SAY YEAH FOR JASON. THANKS FOR THE COMMENT ABOUT THE WELCOME HOME FOR JASON AND I WATCHED THE VIDEOS TOO AND I WAS SIMPLY BROUGHT TO TEARS. HE TRULY DESERVED ALL OF THAT AND MORE. THANK YOU ROCKWALL FOR DOING THIS FOR JASON. I CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS CD TO COME OUT. SEE YOU ON TOUR JASON.

Rebecca Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:05 AM EST

I read the article and was so happy Jason was a big hit in itunes, he truly deserves it and he had me at Daydream. I then read the comments and was so excited to hear about the celebration for Jason and I went to the site and his videos were simply remarkable and the comment was right he even sounds better live. What a day, wish I could have been there, now that was a celebration well deserved. Halleigh for Jason Castro.

After reading most of the comments, I have to add mine. David Cook had me at "Hello". I couldn't get that song out of my mind and looked forward with great anticipation for his next song each and every week. He is a class act and an exciting performer. I was so happy he won... beyond happy! He deserves this win and I am anxious for his album to come out. As Ryan Seacrest said each night - we would only be able to download the Idol contestant's songs till midnight the final night. I spent an hour downloading David Cook's songs and some of his videos. You can see how much his performances improved each week... he is the greatest! David A. has a great voice, but he can't sing the songs David Cook does. David C. can sing the songs David A. sings. He's just more versatile and what a voice. I listen to his songs, and watch the performances on Americanidol.com/videos and also YouTube every day. I can't get enough of this amazingly talented young man. He's got a great future.

Vicki Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

OH YEAH everyone can go to rockwalllovesjason.com for all the details

Vicki Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

YEAH FOR JASON CASTRO WHO IS NOT A DAVID! And by the way all Jason fans I personally was at the welcome home celebration for Jason Castro Thursday in Rockwall, TX and he finally got all the recognition he truly deserves. A crowd of around 15,000 was there to welcome him home. The mayor gave him a key to the city and he received numerous gifts and he performed four songs. He sounds even more wonderful up close and real life. What a remarkable experience for me and he is truly a remarkable person who deserved every bit of this.

Mountain Gator Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Record executives continue to prove themselves to be braindead morons.

Why pull the season seven performances from iTunes when there is obviously still a demand for them?

Everybody loses, the contestants, the songwriters, the record companies and the fans (like me) who would still like to download the songs but they are no longer available.

The only people that benefit from this situation are the bootleggers.

sam Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

Actually, when all of the downloads were there at once, Cook outsold David A three to one.

Ashley Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

David Cook might have broken records, but David Arcuhleta is still better. I'm not saying the show was rigged or anything, but why do you guys think iTunes doesn't have Archie's songs available anymore? Probably cuz they're afraid that he'll beat their "american idol". Enjoy the spotlight while you can, Cook.

May Archie live on!

sam Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

What some are ignoring is that Cook was number 1 on the digital downloads chart which actually measures sales. The other chart includes radio play and other factors. Unfortunately, many radio stations won't play the "coronation song" any more. And as itunes had some sort of exclusive agreement with AI this year, I am not sure how quickly it was released to radio. Apparently, you can't buy a copy of it except for download. Most relevant is that Cook made Billboard history this week. And his song was number 1 on itunes and ringtones within about an hour of its release. And then there is Amazon--presales on a CD that doesn't even exist yet. Very good signs, I would say. Of course, we will see what the future brings. I know that I will buy it.

socalgirl Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

If I never hear another comparison between Taylor Hicks and Cook it couldn't be soon enough. Hicks was a clown. America got it wrong that year - Daughtry, Elliot, Pickles, even Bucky C are more marketable. Unlike TH, Cook is an artist who knows exactly who he is and where he wants to go. More importantly, he's smart and understands business. He won't squander this opportunity. I'll say it again - unbelievers, just you wait and see.

FYI Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

Taylor Hicks CD also pre shipped through amazon and they expected great things based on pre sales, just likke with Cook. So his label shipped a million Copies of Taylors debut CD based on pre sales, but after 7 months, including the pre sales, only 700,000 copies were sold. Looks like the same thing may very well happen to Cook, his fans reserve a copy but they are the only people that end up buying it. Lol!!

Pete Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

Interesting to note that on the billboard chart he debuted at #3. He's now in company with Jordin, both idol winners that did not debute at #1. Even Taylor Hicks' "Do I make you Proud" debuted at #1. Only 230,000 people bought Cook's single which isn't very impressive considering the Idol's debut single sales are always higher than the Idol's Debut CD sales. Just something to think about, Cook really isn't off to that great of a start, they just neglect to include the information that isn't flattering so that it sounds better than it actually is, with a positive spin they can generate more interest. But the bottom line is he didn't debut on the Billboard chart at #1, and that's not a good sign at all.

socalgirl Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

I thought so. Cook fans have so much confidence in HIS confidence in his music that we're willing to buy his album 5 months before it comes out. To the unbelievers out there - be open minded. You ain't seen nothin' yet! This is Idol Season (LUCKY) Seven and this Idol is like no other. You watch.

Joan Tully Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

David Cook--your dream has come true. And so has ours. Thank you--looking forward to the next 10 years with you.

Kate Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

A lot of misinformation going around here. FYI -Cook earned a degree in graphic design and gave himself until the age of 26 to see if he could make a decent living in music before giving up in favor of a job in graphic design or something else. Since he signed a $4 million contract, it appears to me like he made his self-imposed deadline. I wish the guy the best of luck.

cornwallis hankie Sat, May 31, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Wow, I guess the poor economy hasn't affected you tards who would waste your money on bad kareoke. Lemmings!

LB Sat, May 31, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Anyone who looked at dialidol.com the day of the finale knew David Cook had won, and by a large margin. I do wonder if Simon was tipped to this as well. No matter...the right guy won, and I have no doubt he's going to be a huge success.

It's kind of weird how bitter the (I assume) Archie fans are about all this. I can't imagine why they're so upset as to post all this silliness on message boards against David Cook. David A. would be embarrassed to know his fans were behaving in such an ugly way.

To socalgirl Sat, May 31, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Yes, you're reading it correctly on Amazon.com. David Cook's CD is #2 on the Music Best-Seller List, even though it won't be released until the fall (maybe Oct./Nov.) You can pre-order it now but your credit card will not be charged until the item ships. I went ahead and ordered it just to show my support for DC. I read somewhere DC said he will be working on the CD while he is on tour with the AI Group this summer. I have seen the schedule for that tour. Looks like a killer with so many dates in a row and so many different towns. Looks like DC will not be getting any sleep this summer!

socalgirl Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

Am I reading it wrong or is Cook's unreleased album the no. 2 selling album on Amazon right now just with pre-orders?

Elsie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

This was by far the best Idol finale ever! Two super talented guys ending up competing against one another with such class and true respect for the other one. I describe it as being pregnant and not caring if you have a girl or a boy as long as the baby is healthy. That was my feeling about the finale. Now matter how it turned out I would be happy!!

Louise M. Gibson Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

Just wanted to respond to Cynthia Claire's comment. You hit it right on the nose girl, and you covered the whole picture. It is really sad to see some of this unfold, I think we are seeing more of the real truth of the politics and the money this time.
But we have to look at the example that both David's have given us. The honesty, the concern - no negative comments from either of the David's.
I had a difficult time deciding who to vote for because they both are so talented and both are so nice. I congratulate them both because I think they are both winners. I also was so impressed with David Archuletta. When he sings you forget that he is young. What a beautiful voice. For now, we have to enjoy David's Cook adventure and wish him all kinds of happiness and then we have to be patient because I think when the time is right David Archuletta will have the same popularity and I for one am so anxious to buy anything he puts out.

Bracy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

Oh puh-leaze... "Reverse psychology" doesn't explain Cook dominating the download sales charts. Cook proved that he can sing anything that Archie can sing, but Archie can't sing everything that Cook can sing. Every song by Archie sounds the same, if you've heard one Archie song, you've heard 'em all. Cook can make everything he sings sound original.

To Cookiebr7 and Dan Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

Yay!!!! David Cook has arrived! I'm so happy for him! Cookiebr7, that's it in a nutshell, very well said! I'm a fan of you from now on :) And Dan, I would gladly have sex with his CDs than with you ever!Fwahahahah

JP Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

To Tom,

Cook's non-finale songs were removed (like the other contestants) once they put up the finale songs. Therefore those non-finale songs actually charted based on the strength of about 3-day sales. Makes it more impressive that they charted.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

I'm posting this May 30, 2008, 9 days after the American Idol Grand Finale.

I watched American Idol both nights of the grand finale waiting for the announcement of the winners name of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition ........
and I'm still waiting.
The following quote is from the only link American Idol.com has concerning the songwriting contest. (It's under the Show Guide Link ....American Idol Songwriter)

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

"The Nation Has Decided"

"Who Has Won? Tune in to the American Idol Finale on May 20th and 21st 2008
to find out." End quote.
Like I said ....I watched. And here's the only thing said about the winner.

Ryan Seacrest ......"Ladies and gentlemen singing the winning song of this years competition ...Time Of My Life ..this ..is ..your .. American Idol ..David Cook, Goodnight." End quote.

9 days later American Idol has yet to name the winner. It's not in the American Idol news section, not on the American Idol homepage ..............Nothing.

Last year the winner's were introduced on camera by Ryan Seacrest. This year nada.

The following is from the Myspace blog page of the winner of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Competition ...Mr. Regie Hamm ...and he doesn't seem that happy.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

"AMERICAN IDOL, MAGIC RAINBOWS ...AND DOTTIE"

"The guy in the feather suit who wrote the song for Simon had his own photo stand where you could have your picture taken with him. Hmmmm, maybe next time I'll write a song so campy it simply must be performed in front of fifty million people with the USC marching band. At least then I might have my name mentioned or my face shown ...but I digress." End quote.

American Idol made a lot of money off this contest and the ONLY thing we got in return was a thanks for the $10.00 email.

P.S. I dare you to sign up for the American Idol Forums (Songwriting) and post a question or comment about this and see how long it takes till the forum moderators delete it.
Don't worry you won't have to wait long. americanidolexposed.weebly.com

Where are all of David Archuleta's songs? They have been removed from ITunes.

tracy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

they took down ALL of the non-finale idol performances at the same time, for the record, so people who are upset that david outsold their favorites might want to make a note of that.

Lynne Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I loved David Cook with ZZ Top, I watched it four times, I just wish he wouldn't date Kimberly Caldwell, I think she is a fame grabber.

What's wrong with tattoos, leather jackets, and cowboy boots?

Cookiebr7 Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Here is what I find so appealing about David Cook, scruffy appearance and all. He is musically gifted and talented; very creative. He gives off the vibe of a REAL MAN: one who is comfortable in his own skin. He has a vision of himself and his talent which he will adhere to, no matter what others say.(e.g. his song choice finale night) He is mature, intelligent, and articulate. He demonstrates class and humility. He isn't afraid to show honest emotion. He has a grainy sexy vocal instrument and a seductive gaze which is riveting without being smarmy. He is the REAL DEAL. The way he handled himself and was gracious to his competitor speaks volumes about his character. This is attractive.
I also have much love and respect for little David. Both of these young men have been blessed with talent and will be successful, each in their own way. They shouldn't be compared because they are so COMPLETELY different.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Anybody see a pattern yet? 3 of the 2008 American Idol Songwriting Contest Top 20 songwriters get credit on Clay Aiken CD's. Out of thousands and thousands of entries (At $10.00 each) 3 out of 20 work with Mr. Aiken. And nobody has a problem with this? Rebecca Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Alex, I know where you're coming from I tried to download his songs about a week ago and only the one you mentioned was there. I don't get it.

Pam to Donna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Donna, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but I would really hate to look at things through your eyes. Apparently you see the mussed up hair (sexy in my opinion btw)and clothing that doesn't meet with your approval, and the guy and anyone who likes him is a loser.David is 25 not 26, not that it makes that much different, but in there is time to earn a college degree. The fact that he is "still bartending" makes him what? Someone who is beneath you? He has no "real jot"? I suppose you meant real job here. So I'm curious. What makes a real job? The guy has worked his back side off to attain his dream. He hasn't compromised his integrity in order to get what he wants, and he is being rewarded for that. And even in his moment of glory, he remained and remains humble and caring of his competitors and those around him. He is a class act with bushels and bushels of talent. If he is someone you consider a loser, I am honored to be called a loser as well

Alex Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Not exactly sure where all these downloads are coming from because when I go on iTunes, the only song I see available is the hideous Time of My Life. I'd buy Always Be My Baby if it was available, but apparently somebody decided it shouldn't be out there anymore.

SimonSays Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

How many woman do you suppose fantasize about YOU? I suspect the number is somewhere between 0 and 0.1.

to Donna and Dan Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

(whom I suspect are the same person)...hmmm... just think of how much more of a loser people might think you to be, as you didn't waste your time voting, but you wasted it kvetching about the people who did! Let me guess: you're a David "Don't Beat Me, Daddy!" Archuleta fan? Word of advice: Sour grapes make rotten wine, and you seem pretty drunk on it.

DC is a class act Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Class is being magnanimous under adversity -- which DC displayed during the AI season -- in his respect for DA, in his acceptance of criticism, dealing with his brother's illness. He also showed sensitivity to others -- pointing to DA after he was announced the winner, in his recognition of his music teacher, the tentative way he put his hand on Brooke's shoulder as she was sobbing over being sent home, his arm around Syesha in her defeat. It is David Cook's essence that will make him a super star. The hair, scruffy face, and clothes are irrelevant.

KAY Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

All you people that can't handle the fact that David Cook is a well-rounded and amazing singer YOU get a life!!! You should hear youselves you are soooo bitter. At least David & Daivd both act like gentlemen and seem to really like each other. And as a matter of fact I think DC is very good looking. I personally don't think George Clooney is that cute - he's too old now anyways. I like my guys a little edgier. BTW DC does NOT shout. I guess you missed like, oh say, almost all of his performances if that's what you think. And if the other contestants tunes aren't available for download then someone explain how they placed on the chart??? And to "Donna" you might want to look at yourself first- you are also on this board and read this article - so I guess that means you're a loser too. I usually don't post on these board but I was getting so sick of reading all of these idiotic and childish comments about how everything is manipulated and rigged. It's ridiculous.

andreafig Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Some of you tells us Cook fans to get a life and that we are losers but really the losers are you guys that even bother to read soemthing you dont even like. People this is whats wrong with America everytime something good happens to someone a bunch of you people have to go out and bash them, does that really make you feel well??? I for one liked both davids and im happy with the results. You are the ones who seriously need to find a life and invest your hate time on something else so you can keep feeling good about yourselfs. IDIOTS!

DC more than a cute loud rocker Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I think David Cook is a man of substance -- besides the singing talent, he seems to me to have integrity, warmth, and class, in addition to a self-depricating sense of humor and intelligence. An amazing moment to me was in the AI Finale, Simon's ripping DC after his 3rd song -- saying something like he really blew it. DC didn't flinch --didn't pout, didn't argue, didn't cry. He stood there and "took it like a man." I saw strength and courage on his face. It is these qualities (and those mentioned above) that make him more than just a good singer and give him an endearing personality that is far and above the average singer/celebrity.

Donna Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

I find it amazing that some of you stayed up and voted over 1,000 times for Cook. I think you can probably all relate to the loud, freak, grunge look, you know the intelligent guy who was still bartending and no real jot at 26 years old. Oh yes you also think that loud singing is cool. His songs were not different, they were LOUDER. You people won't get out there and vote for a president and senators but you stayed up and voted for Cook. Now what is wrong with this picture. You had to prove a point that what you believe is better. Did you bring your tatoos, cowboy boots, and leather jackets? Now that is America. If you have that much time to spend on these boards and voting, volunteer your time to something a little more meaningful in your life and get a real job already. LOSERS

Andrew Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

You can say all you want about David Archuleta, but hey he almost beat David Cook. An experienced rocker, part of many bands for years and almost 10 years older. Hmmm. You do the math. Hey Taylor Swift just won many country awards and she started a singing contract at 16. Well at least she has many grammys. Kids are taking over the music world, so get over it. I bet if David Cook was married he could not get as many votes. Most women who can't get a man in this world still fantasize about being with him. Now tell you people don't have real issues.

Tamara Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

So Amy Winehouse won a grammy too. So what? If you like freaks then there are plenty of awards for those people too. Taylor Hicks won Idol too and he was better looking. Now he has no contract and it is all about Taylor Hicks WHO? Of course Itunes did not market this guy too well either. Too bad, his music and style is so much better. The music world is not just about ROCK music. Some of us can't stand rock, but again we are not freaks either.

DC and DA on the Today Show Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

I tuned in to watch my boyfriend DC but I have to say both Davids were adorable. I never got the hysteria over DA -- I saw someone just too young (as in unformed) and too programmed. But yesterday I finally saw a really sweet, humble AND talented kid -- and more so when he matures. Props to both Davids.

Dan Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

For those of you who can't get enough of DC (please get a real life and a real job). His CD that he had out already, is available, he could not give it away remember? Please go buy it and have sex with it. You must live very deprived lives, if you think this guy is the new hot man. OMG. Before you know it you rock fans will be declaring him the new Pope and the new Saint. Get a freaking life already. He is just another cute loud rocker, marketed very well and pimped by Simon on American Idol. LOUD FREAKS are in now. Carly will be adding some tatoos on him for the total package look.

Tricia Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

What is this world coming to now? When we think rockers with bad hairdos and unshaved faces, are good looking and hot. OMG. Women's taste have changed a great deal. The grunged look is back. Sorry I still like my men clean cut. Michael Johns is my Idol. Now that is HOT and classier to boot. I wonder why they no longer has his tunes available to download...oh sorry David Cook won..hmmmmm! Simon is hot for David Cook. He wants to be him. UK goes grunge and loud. The mean and yukky styles must be the new cool now. GEEEEZ

Itunes sales Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Do the AI singers earn a performance royalty off the sale of itunes? Someone told me it was only the songwriter and the producer who makes the money. I hope this isn't true.

Alicia Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

OK folks don't get too carried away yet. Cook is NO George Clooney NOT. He will have to take more showers, get a new hair (oh sorry he did), shave and get a better and classier wordrobe. That is what we now call our American idols? YUK. Amy Winehouse look alike. She too won Grammys. FREAKS

Separated at birth Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

David Cook kinda looks like Kenneth Branagh in "Much Ado About Nothing," only DC is waaaay more handsome, of course. Do you think DC does Shakespeare? I would pay to see that!

Tom Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

Cook is selling well, because his songs are the ONLY ONES available for downloading. That is like running a one man race. You bet you will end up a winner. Geez. More marketing manipulation by the producers. They could not stand the idea they lost money on Daughtry sales in their pockets now they want to make sure this rocker gives them a piece of the action. Hurray for democracy. Good for the rock fans though.

DC the next George Clooney? Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Or as Bea Steves said, the next Marlon Brando? I remember after DC sang "Music of the Night" and Randy complimented him, (shock!) DC mentioned he had musical theater experience. ATTENTION HOLLYWOOD: Get DC starring at the local cineplex fast!

Chasee Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Great for Cook. But of course he is the only one that can outsell any other Idols since his songs are the only ones available for downloadking. Of course, American Idol is still pimping their rocker. I wonder why AI no longer makes the Archuleta songs available for downloading? Must be afraid that some must outsell Cook. Go David Archuleta.

CDs & Movies! Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

How about David Cook's comment on the Ellen Show (in regards to his future plans) that he wants to win a Grammy AND an Oscar. DC in the movies -- yippee! I will see every movie he is in. I will buy every record he makes. I would follow him around the supermarket if he would let me. XOXO to DC.

T.B. Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

To WildKAT: Another excellent post. You are so right: Lithogoe et al are fools, and in particular, Simon, who another poster accurately called a schmuck. He's lost all credibility with me. I actually think Paula was the only one pulling for Cook -- so keep her (and her entertaining babblings) and boot the other two idiots. When I say I LOVE David Cook -- I mean it -- and I haven't felt this way since my wayward Bruce Springsteen days.

Bea Stevens Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

I'm 81 and became a great fan of David Cook's right off - I don't listen to contemporary music, but his prsonality. voice, presence was outstanding. As a mother, his appealing look was like a little boy wakened. I see a great movie career for him if he is interested - Marlon Brando?

AI overhype reminiscent of Bush Admin.? Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

I can't help equating the manipulation of the AI producers/judges to that of the Bush White House: "There are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq;" "Mission accomplished!;" "We don't torture;" "There is no recession;" to "DA scored a knockout"; "DA is the one to beat;"etc. Americans are sick of being treated like idiots. I think the biased and dishonest atmosphere of the entire season by the AI team sparked an even bigger backlash against the drudge they were spewing out. Wacky theory? Maybe. But I honestly think the Bush Admin. helped Cookie win! Maybe Lythgoe called Carl Rove for some manipulation tricks to foist on the American public? (JK) The bottom line: The American public is smart enough to not only see through the hype, but rebel against it and vote the way they want to. GO DC!

socalgirl Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

This is just so SWEET for those of us who championed Cook from the beginning. And, I mean the beginning - I remember his audition in Omaha & looked for him during Hollywood week & on! I found it humorous that he kept being characterized as no. 2 when I am willing to bet that his vote count started being no. 1 by the Top 7 and probably each week thereafter. He is an amazing talent and a solid individual (an "old soul" perhaps?) who seems to have aged 5 years in 9 months! I'm not surprised his download numbers are so high - if you got all 17 songs, it makes a great album. I am looking forward to great stuff from this artist for years to come. Very cool.

go Archuleta! Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

it's logic that Cook is selling better than the other contestants, He is the champ. The one who surprises me is David A, I think he won more new fans after the knock out. We have to recognize that David A is only 17 years old and most of the season sang more unknown songs than Cook. But Archie sells and very well...
Archie's got talent.He's always there.
We love u Archie..
and congratulations to both Davids and the other contestants....

WildKAT Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

I'm all about David Cook. The cat totally rocks. Like many others who have posted here, I always voted for Cook and spent 4 hours voting on the final sing off night. I got in 908 votes for him with DialIdol.com. Simon and his motley fellow judges pimped Arculeta constantly and relentlessly the entire season. I was ready to kick in the TV when Simon dissed Cook on the final competition night. We are too smart to buy into that hype and unfairness. We KNOW who we like and David Cook is definitely the man! American Idol producer Nigel Lithgoe and his "judges" made utter fools of themselves and all I can say is HOORAH! for America who told them where to shove their pimping of Archuleta. I don't mind the kid at all, but I do have a problem being told who I should vote for when my heart and ears tell me who I WANT to vote for. To H*ll with American Idol judges and producer. David Cook totally deserved to win. He's da bomb!

Charisse Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

I am with Daniel. AI PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE release David's old songs again! PLEASE! If they did this well in a week, IMAGINE how much money they would make if you actually let people keep buying them!!!!

Yeah, I find it very bizarre that iTunes wiped out the library so quickly. There was more money to be made there. They only released the video of Cookie's The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face and I just kept waiting on the single until it was too late. Glad I jumped on the finale songs, but I'm bummed not to get the Cook/ZZ Top Sharp Dressed Man.
Attention iTunes, make more money off me, please!

I’m glad Cook won. I just ordered a cool David Cook shirt from www.PantherTees.com. They said not to tell anyone, but here is a 10% discount code, pts10 (it is case sensitive, so copy and paste it). Enjoy!

i find it interesting that Jason Castro is still on the chart this week after being out of the competition for a few weeks. Not mentioned in the article was the comment on AI that the original Hallelujah topped the charts after he sang it IN THE SEMI FINALS! Would love to know total of copies sold...

cg Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

I don't see anything from DC on iTunes at present except for that godawful "winning" single, easily the worst thing he's sung on Idol to date.

If they were smart, they would have released a studio version of "Hello" or "Always Be My Baby" or "The World I Know" as the first single. He did a version of the latter on Access Hollywood the day after winning (with no sleep, less!) which was simply breathtaking.

I think Idol doesn't want any competition for the single they are pushing at present - that would look embarassing to them. But since the public chose DC over DA, much to AI's surprise, shouldn't we be allowed to determine which song of his we want to plunk down our money for?

I was forced to go to bootleg sites to download all of these - Idol lost money on me, and magnify that by millions of people.

Stupid marketing decision on their part! BTW, I refuse to buy that drecky single.

Hai east! 8TV mungkin akan ulang semula American Idol 7 ni mungkin dalam tahun depan... Tapi anda juga boleh tengok di Youtube.com, pasti ada yang dah muat naik video penuh pertandingan akhir AI

Cook fans were in a voting frenzy long before Simon said anything. I had always planned to vote for four hours and so had most other fans. It is an insult to all of us to imply that the only reason that we supported Cook was because of something that Simon said. And David A's fans were voting too, I am sure. When is everybody going to accept (as David A so graciously has) that Cook won because he had more fans and more votes and he will continue to sell his music (hopefully) to those fans for many years to come? Simon was a very small part of all of this. We saw the talent in Cook and he was judge proof from the third week!

And to think, this is only the beginning , people.

Daniel B Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:29 AM EST

Also, WTF is the reason that 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', 'Baba O Reilly', and 'All I Really Need Is You' were never released as singles? All three of those songs could be megahits for Cook as well. Is there any chance that Idol will release these as singles as well? Even the raw 'live' mp3's I managed to pull from the internet sound great, but I'd love to have studio (or better quality live versions).

Daniel B Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:11 AM EST

David Cook is awesome! One question: With this amazing success, do you think there is any chance that Idol will make the 'older' singles available for purchase again? After Wednesday, the only singles available for purchase are 'Time of My Life', 'Dream Big', 'Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' and 'World I Know', which means that all of this other singles that charted are only charting based on their sales between Monday and Wednesday of last week (which makes it all the more amazing how well they charted! Imagine what the overall sales numbers for megahits like 'Billie Jean', 'Hello', and 'Always Be My Baby' must be! It doesn't make sense, with these kind of sales numbers, for Idol to yank them from circulation and I hope they make them available for purchase again (though I already got mine, thank goodness :)

cynthia claire Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

actually, if you really really think about it, it was all a gynormous setup - with the comment by simon that archy had won by a knockout came the instant result of sending the cook fans into a frenzy and the archy fans into a slumber - that is really ALL that happened - simon knows how it works big time - and his reverse psychology worked beyond likely his wildest dreams ... so his apology simply was the added comment cause he knew that he knew he had swung it all around in the direction he really wanted it to go - anyway, he may have even known the vote before it was announced, call me a bit cynical if you want, but even if he didn't, he had it cased beyond casing ... but in the end both guys will end up winning and that is ok with me (tho i am just a little sad that archy is in the shadows, for the moment, but i have no doubt that it will be ok one day arch so not to worry) we are all waiting for the upcoming albums ... go guys go

Loretta Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

You can not buy any of the other idols songs ie., Jason Castro! Why? They do not want competition for the Davids! It ended before the finale! What a coincidence! Oh well, we shall see who goes the farther and for how long.

AWESOMEEEEEE! GO COOKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!

sam Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Congratulations to both Davids and the other Idol finalists, too. This was a great season after all and David Cook has just started to conquer the world--how exciting that Idol can still find great talent and lead to this kind of success. I never would have believed it at the beginning of the season, but at that time I hadn't yet seen David Cook.

david cooks is cool but david archuleta rocks!

JeriC Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!And people are out there saying he won't sell any cd's. I nan't wait to see them eat their words! ( good for Archie too! COOK ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Next stop the GRAMMYS!!!!!!!( and I don't mean old ladies! )

melanie Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

emily - i know what you mean. i really didn't download too much from iTunes (i stress the "from iTunes" part, haha) until AI. but all the songs i've bought were worth it (except "I don't wanna miss a thing" by DC... what was going ON with that arrangement? ick)

anyway archey is my #1 by a landslide, but i also love DC & Castro. i would probably buy michael johns & carly's CDs too, & probably Syesha's.

i just think it's INSANE how Idol has taken the music industry by storm. i mean seriously, they have produced a number of international sensations - underwood, daughtry, clarkson... jordin's career is still getting started but i think it's promising. aiken & fantasia are very successful on broadway. & a # of other artists have released successful singles & hopefully more to come. it really is incredible.

i can't wait for Archey, DC, & Jason to put out their albums... it's really painful to have to wait....

davidslefthand Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Pat Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Simon only "apologized" because he knew Cook had won and wanted to save face. He did it with Clay and Ruben.

Emily P Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I've never bought so much of one artist off of iTunes until Idol. Love the studio and live recordings of songs (espec. DC) EW should do a PopWatch or reader review of the iTunes songs, because some of them are amazing (Carly, Michael and DC in particular)!
I wish I had the money to go see the tour! Oh well, four months til albums come out!

Shugahhhh Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

Simon came off like a putz during both finale episodes. I don't know which was worse: his ignorant and misguided admonition that Cook should have sang "Hello" or "Billie Jean" rather than the Collective Soul number (which still makes me cry), or his lame apology the next evening. Even his apology fell short of complementing Cook individually. Whadda schmuck.
