'Rent' goes (back) to the movies

Categories: Movie Biz, Theater

Rentonbroadway_l Can’t get to New York for the final night of Rent on Broadway? Now you don’t have to. Sony Pictures announced today a new program called the Hot Ticket, which will screen Broadway shows, rock concerts, and sporting events in digitally-equipped movie theaters across the country (much like how some theater chains have been experimenting with special presentations for years). Up first will be Cirque du Soleil’s Delirium, which will debut in August for a limited time. Then, Rent will bow in September, featuring special closing night extras, including performances from original cast members.

This sounds awesome! I was so sad to miss Rent in NY. Can’t wait.

I think this is pretty great, for people who can’t get out to see the real thing…but I hope this doesn’t make people think that they’re getting the same experience as the live show. Broadway needs all the help it can get and I hope this doesn’t take any business from it.

Hey, why not! It has to be better than most of the Hollywood sh*t that’s on the screen these days!

  • nilito

Hey, if it’s being filmed, is there a chance it’ll be released on dvd or something? :)

  • cRAIG

    that’s cool, brew…

Don’t let Chris Columbus get involved in any of this.

How would it be viewed in theatres… Is it just select, or is it every theatre. I am a huge broadway lover…

  • renthead

i excited about this and hope its not only in major theatres…i cant afford to go see it on broadway or go to new york

I hope Sony is taping this final performance and not just broadcasting live like the Met opera does, that way later they can release a DVD of the final performance.

  • Steve Thompson

This is exciting !!! Hope it is the final show that they are broadcasting and not just bits a pieces of shows over time.

I was really upset when i found out that I wouldnt be able to go to the final showing because Im going to be away at school. Im praying that the theatre near me is showing it.

the “final performance filming” is not actually the sept 7 show, they are filming a performance in mid august and advertising it for theatres as the final performance

    Hey, person-below-me…
How do you know the performance that’s going to be in movie theaters isn’t the final one?

  • Shelby Brage

When will we know where they will be filming this?

  • Amanda Chadeayne

The “Final Performance Filming” is August 20th at the neaderlander… only 100 pairs of tickets were given out to people in the tristate area. There was an e-mail sent out last week for those that subscribe to the SITEforrent newsletter. I was lucky enough to respond in time and get a pair.

  • Chris C

Are they gonna release it on DVD?

  • Jay

Actually what we see in theatres will be from the final nigt (sept. 7th) They will be filming that night as well and taking select scenes from both the aug. 20th filming and the final night

the “final showing” of rent is a compilation of several days worth of filming. much of it was actually shot with no audience at all. they wanted the scenes to be perfect so they would film a scene over and over again until they got the shot they were looking for.

i posted the previous comment, and i just wanted to add that i was actually there last night and i know people that work for the theatre so i know exactly how it was done.

OH MY GOODNESS! I was one of many who paid $20 to see the final performance of RENT at the movie theatre. It was AWESOME! The movie goers “and myself” we were clapping, singing and also crying at the end! I am so happy that I was able to see the show, as I live in Ohio and would not have been able to make it to the final performance.
AWESOME SHOW! I LOVE TRACEY THOMS SHE WAS AWESOME!

  • Zack

This movie was freakin’ AMAZING!!! A Blu-ray Disc is a MUST (and a DVD for those who don’t own Blu-ray Disc players).

  • Jen
