David E. Kelley: Will he be on the air this fall?

Categories: TV Biz

Will fans of David E. Kelley be in for a big disappointment come fall? ABC has yet to pick up the producer’s Emmy-winning drama Boston Legal for another season, and EW.com just learned that he may walk away from Life on Mars, a drama pilot he executive produced for ABC, because of financial reasons. The series, which stars Jason O’Mara, is based on the BBC’s sci-fi crime drama of the same name. It focuses on a 21st century detective who, after a serious injury, is transported back to the 1970s as a cop. One insider says that the chances for a series pickup are strong even without Kelley’s involvement, though it appears the drama may end up as a coproduction between ABC Studios and 20th Century Fox TV (the latter studio, along with Kelley, first sold the project to ABC). According to the insider, the studios are in talks with the exec producers of
October Road to take over showrunning duties on Life on Mars if Kelley leaves. A spokesman for 20th Century Fox TV declined comment.

Meanwhile, Kelley’s beloved but beleaguered Boston Legal is still awaiting word of a fifth-season pickup by ABC. The dramedy, which has earned Emmy wins for stars James Spader and William Shatner, has averaged 9.8 million viewers this season, but it hit a low of 7.4 million when the show switched time slots on April 30.

Boston Legal is the rare show we WAIT for each week!! There aren’t many shows this parent of 3 young kids gets a chance to watch – or MAKES time to watch. This one is absolutely worth my time & attention… the BEST by far!!! Even when it has its ridiculous moments (like every show does!), this dramedy is FUNNY – yet, in a thought-provoking way! How many shows today are smart AND laughable?! I am always impressed by the arguments & the perspectives it raises. The people behind it have every reason to be proud of this production, ESP t/way they stir up controversial subjects & current hot topics. This is one WISE show – in the truest form!

Boston Legal is my favorite show because of its mix of comedy and drama but specially because on Alan Shore’s final statements the show always deals with politics in one way or another.I hope it returns!!!

I hope it returns too. It should be moved back to Tuesday at 10. It was stupid to move it to Wednesdays and not advertise it that much. People are used to seeing it then. And it is not going against strong competition in that slot.

I hope ABC picks up Boston Legal for another season. It’s my favorite show behind Lost. It was a mistake to move the show to Wednesday. Because of the move I didn’t get to see it, because of other commitments. It was ABC’s own fault the show lost 2.4 million viewers. Don’t make another mistake and cancel it.

WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE??? BOSTON LEGAL IS THE ONLY TV SERIES THAT HAS THE BALLS TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES IN THIS COUNTRY !!! WE’RE HIDING OUR HEADS IN THE SAND AS USUAL. I STRONGLY ADMIRE DAVID E. KELLY’S TALENT,MAKING STRONG POINTS AND COMPLETELY ENTERTAINING US AT THE SAME TIME,WHAT A CONCEPT !!!!! IT’S TYPICAL OF TELEVISION TO NOT BE SUPPORTIVE OF A SHOW THAT ACTUALLY MAKES YOU SIT UP AND THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY. WITHOUT ALAN SHORE’S CLOSINGS WE WILL HAVE NO SPOKESMAN FOR THE IMPORTANT ISSUES. WE ARE TRULY GUTLESS.

Yes! I so agree with Claudia.
You know… if I had one dying wish… rather than lobster..I’d want to watch Boston Legal!
    I know… I know…
I’m a sick chick, but I love being in their company.
All for one and one for all (of us)!!

I do need to add something more serious. Someone told me this may be their last season and I couldn’t imagine why…until I remembered who rules this country (big pharma, industry, etc) and David E Kelly has the guts to speak out. If you watch the advertisements, you’ll understand why this show is over. Never fear. people are getting it.

    happy thanksgiving everyone.
this episode is real and deals with real situations. this is what David E Kelly does.

BOSTON LEGAL is a very important clever show. It relates to current events in a jokingly intellectual way. If BC does not pick it up for another season, then NBC or CBS definitely should.
