Idol Jason Castro: "ready to go home"?

He made it through Paulagate 2008, but is American Idol’s Jason Castro ready to call it quits? EW’s Jessica Shaw was on the scene as the Idols rehearsed for Neil Diamond week (read her “Why Song Selection Matters” feature here) and spoke with Castro on Monday afternoon: “I’ll get around to practicing,” he promised her, after noting that his brother and a friend had visited over the weekend and that his Saturday meeting with Diamond had gone “really bad” because he didn’t yet know his songs. “What happens happens. I’ll sing and if people like it, they like it. And if they don’t, they don’t. I’m kind of ready to go home.”

You’re kind of ready to walk off America’s biggest stage???

“It’s been overwhelming,” Castro continued. “I got 150 balloons yesterday delivered to the studio because people heard I was sick last week. That’s cool, but that’s just weird.”

So why not run this “story” on Monday or Tuesday?

  • curlysue2009

Sorry…this story does not sound very credible.

  • ouch.

dude just sounds plain ungrateful for what he’s been given. to be honest, it’s kinda showed in his recent performances.

  • Jonathan

    I believe it.
But it’s dissapointing, because I’ve been hoping that his almost careless attitude was not as it seemed.

  • Rita

There are people who are overwhelmed by fame. He’s a really taleneted artist and he’ll do awesome next week! He has to beat syesha and come i #3! Maybe he was just stressed out come on Jessica give him some credit…

  • Not a Fan

Many of these contestants want off this show. Good for Jason for admitting it!

  • utidolfan

If he’s ready to go home, let him go. He acts as though he could care less, as opposed to Brook, who you could tell really wanted to be there and was devestated by leaving. His hearts not in it! He should stick to the local open mic nights at coffee bars.

  • Opal

He sounds sane, and the last line here sounds bitter and rude.

  • Leila

I feel bad for the girls that organized the balloon delivery… They were so excited. That statement might lose him some fans.

  • Megan

I have no doubt in my mind that the “journalist” took Jason’s words totally out of context. Not to mention this “story” is horribly written and not credible in any way. Jason is there to win and that’s that.

  • castrofied

i’m a huge fan of jason – but i think he’ll be more successful outside of the AI machine. i stopped voting a couple weeks ago, but will be definitely buying his first album!

  • ann

OH BULL SH!!!T NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO GET JASONS FANS TO GET MAD AT HIM AND STOP VOTING – SORRY – NOT WORKING

  • NikkiB

I’m sure if you asked them all of the finalist are kinda ready to go home. It must be a shock to suddenly be in the media spotlight. So EW what’s up with the hit job?

  • Me

Do you like to spin much?? You took all of that out of context and you know it.

  • Angela

I really think these comments were spent so this article could be read as damaging to him! Since when do you join forces with American Idol judges and producers? Also, why not post this on Monday or Tuesday instead of waiting for Thursday?? That makes no sense. Also, if I am correct he received the balloons last week not on Sunday so…I find this not to be very credible. Sorry.

  • Chris

this article is a crock. Unless I hear and see him say those words myself, I don’t buy it. I know Jason comes off a ambivalent at times, but he’s not a stupid as people try to make him out to be.

  • Marie

Jason’s comments show a lack of respect for his fans, and the show that he SIGNED UP for.

  • Becky

And this is yet further evidence as to why Jason should go home…even he says HE doesn’t want to be there.

  • Leila

I think Jason has always been ambivalent about being in the show. He doesn’t want to lose, he’s grateful for the opportunity, but at the same time he hates being away from the rest of the world and having to do things that are not natural to him. He’s always made it clear from the moment he said “I don’t like to do all the other stuff (photo shoots, interviews)”, and recently, that he feels very lonely.

I call Bull___t on this article, because the Idols are not permitted to speak directly to the press while on the show. I think it’s made up. I thought EW had more integrity than this.

Judging from the relieved look and smiles on his face last night after being called to safety, I’m confident in saying that this article is a joke. Go Jason!!

totally dont buy this at all. i am sure this was taken way out on content. we know for a fact that jason was over whelmed by the balloons he recieved last week and even took pictures of them for us to see. i am also sure his statement about going home referred to being homesick and missing his friends and family, not that he doesnt want to be on the show anymore. did you not see how happy he was last night to have gotten through? i dont understand why everyone is suddenly trying to make his fans turn on him. not gonna happen.

  • GetALife

Has Fox made some kind of deal with EW to run a smear campaign against Jason? Lately, it seems the media has been against Jason. I don’t really understand why they are so against him winning. Archie will be another Clay Aiken (nice voice..but people will get tired of him), David Cook (has a better chance, but he will blend in with all the other thousands of rockers in the music industry), Syesha (better off on Broadway). Jason would be the most profitable for them.

JESSICA SHAW IS A DAVID A LOVER – LOOK HOW SCARED THEY MUST BE. TELLING STORIES LIKE THIS. DIDNT WORK – THE FANS DONT BELIEVE THIS AT ALL. JUST ANOTHER PLOT TO UNLOAD THE CONTESTANT THAT AI DOES NOT WANT AFTER WHAT PAULA DID TO HIM ON TUES

His comments disgust me because other talented performers, like Michael and Carly, who really wanted to be there, are gone, and someone who could care less is still there.

  • erinavery

Well…I’m sure it’s out of context but of course it’s weird. I can’t imagine fame ever NOT feeling weird and would be more worried about someone who said it didn’t. And the way the judge treat him is ridiculous…who are they anyway?? I’m pretty sure the people who love Jason’s sound don’t like a whole lot of music that those judges do…big deal….also he’s in it for the music not the glory of fame…of course all the “NOT” music stuff is weird for him…just keep on doin what you do babe…we like it even if they don’t.

What a poorly written article, no doubt taken out of context. We know it’s a lie. Until we hear it from a reliable source, we’re not buying it!

  • Lara

i hope he really is ready to go home, because this is going to upset his fans (as it should). wow.
