'Smallville' creators call it quits

Apr 3, 2008, 12:25 PM | by Jennifer Armstrong

Categories: TV Biz

Smallville creators/executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are leaving the young-Superman drama after seven seasons, though the CW will keep its longest-running and highest-rated drama on its viewership-challenged schedule next year. "We look back at 152 episodes," Gough and Millar wrote in an open letter sent to media outlets this morning. "We look back knowing that the show will continue into season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on." Here's to hoping it goes better than the net's Amy Sherman-Palladino-less final season of Gilmore Girls.

The absolute best thing on TV i have seen every episode and own every one available on DVD but i must say that it worries me that lex is gone i think that was a bad move glad lana is gone her acting was the worst on the show and her voice was getting to be like nails on a chalk board to me.
i also wish lionel didn't die i really
liked his role people keep leaving the show i don't think this is smart
also clarks mom should visit once in awhile it's not realistic if she does not i mean it's not like she died or left the planet. i still love the show i just keep seeing all the wrong moves.

I was impressed with the start of the new season, so maybe this isn't so bad. I thought Michael Rosenbaum leaving would be bad, but now they get to repeat his compelling storyline with the new CEO of Luthercorp: she has to follow in Lex's footsteps to find him, just as Lex followed in Lionel's footsteps to become the man he is. I'm glad Kara's gone (I never thought I'd say that), and Lana's leaving is sad, but she does end up with Pete Ross in the comics. As for the comic/show thing, even the comics change the storyline a bunch of times, so I thought they did a good job. I wonder how they're going to handle the show/movie, since Clark is already at the Daily Planet! I also founds some old Black canary comics and her costume is spot on: love the fishnets.

hjon Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

Well the Smallville season finale was yesterday and the ending makes me think how different next season will be with new producers.
I'm guessing Lex's character will survive and come back as a different actor(Michael Rosenbaum's probably won't be back) and so will Clark Kent. Lana said goodbye to Clark for good. Will next season be completely different?

jacks Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

I love smallville from the first episode to present day. I'm glad Lana is leaving. It's time for Clarke to hook up with Lois. I know I know most of you have your minds set on Chloe and Clarke but come on. They are better suited as friends. There is no spark between them and lets keep it that way. Clarke belongs with Lois and Lois along. I hope the show continues to run for many more seasons. It's time to make Clarke into a man and take him out of young adulthood. Oh and happy ridance to Lana she suited Lex better any ways.

The biggist fan Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

I have been a big superman fan as a child and I am still a big fan as an adult. I agree with other posted comments about the series turning into a soap opera. The series needs to take on a more serious superboy story line and clarke needs to fly and take on more serious worldly responsibilities as superboy and not be stuck in smallville. Also, I can't stand it when the story line repeatedly makes clarke look weak and vulnerable to everything. After all this is the INVINCIBLE man of steel we are talking about.

Robes Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

Its definitely bad that the writers will be leaving. Every series has its share of corny episodes, but by an large, Smallville has been incredibly entertaining. Although there is some unnecessary violence and sexual content, for the most part they've done this while upholding moral story lines, and holding high the importance of honesty in a relationship, and consequences for bad choices. I worry that the show will fall off this plateau with new directors. I also am dissapointed that Lana is leaving. They have invested way too much into that relationship...its clear Clark will never love anyone like he loves Lana. To minimize that now after 7 seasons will be the height of unbelievability, and an insult to all the show has put them through. The Superman/Lois relationship pales compared what they have built in between Lana and Clark in Smallville. Even in the movies, Superman and Lois never worked out anyway. Folks need to just admit Chloe is a great friend, Clark isnt interested.

Gwen Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 02:57 AM EST

I stopped watching the show back when the creators did an interview where they said they weren't going to do anything with the Superman symbol because they thought it was corny. The third most recognized symbol in the world is corny?! Don't know if they ever changed their minds but the fact that EVERYONE knows about Clark and his powers keeps me from kick-starting my viewership. It just isn't right to mess with the storyline that way. Supernatural is way better anyway.

MARK GALAS Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

I LIKED THE SHOW WHEN LEX LUTHER AND CLARK WERE FRIENDS.LEX WAS RIGHT WHEN HE SAID HE AND CLARK COULD CHANGE THE WORLD FOR GOOD.DONT THINK IT WAS GOOD T6HAT CLARK QUIT THE FRIENDSHIP.

Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

My husband & I had been really psyched about this show til 3-4 yrs. ago when we quit watching cause they were showing so many repeats it was bizaare. Obvious major problems w/the writers, creators even then?!?

Adrian Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

What the show needs it to get rid off Lana. There is no need to keeps her around, I mean I can see how the writers struggle to give her a stoy... her acting sucks too. And please enough of the kriptonite freaks.
How about this for a story: lex kills Lana. the end. good isn't it? then we can move on.

Bill Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I love this show! I feel the opposite of a few of you. I feel that seasons 1-3 were less exciting then the current seasons. Clark seems to focus more on saving Lois more than Lana. Lana could leave the show and have it survive, but when Rosenbaum leaves I think it will become fairly boring(although i will still watch). I remember sitting down to watch the very first episode and it sucks to know that it will be over soon. And yes clark, please get your superman costume an go fly and save someone already.

Roberta Hogan Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

I really enjoy the show, and hope it stays on for more seasons. Hated the idea of seeing 2 new shows, and then all those repeats. That spoils the shows.

Rick Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

I want to see Stacy Keibler signed on to play the role of Darma, another surviving Kryptonian. She meets Kal-el and they fall madly in love. She tells him of a planet where a small group of Kryptonian survivors have made their home. Kal-el finds another crystal that will clone his mother Laura. The show’s final episode has Kal-el, Darma, Kara and Laura leaving the earth for the “new Krypton”.

Underdog Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

What can save the boy of steel? How can he survive without his creator? Will new writers save the series?
Stay tuned! Same super channel! same super time! Oh sorry, that's Batman lol!! What the heck, just bring back The Green Hornet!!

EVONNE Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I LOVE CLARK BUT I AM TIRED OF LANA AND THE CLARK THING I HAVE BEEN WATCHING SINCE THE FIRST SHOW I AM A BIG FAN OF THE SHOW I WOULD LOVE TO MEET CLARK ONE DAY AND TO THE NEW WRITERS PLEASE LET GET CLARK AND CHOLE SOMETHING GOING THANKS YOUR BIGGEST FAN EVONNE

Timsomor Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

This show seems to headed in the buffy the vampire direction. I don't think it will end until the Justiceleague movie realease of 2009 or 2010.

jojo Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

arwen: the older superman movies didn't exactly stay true to form either..didn't superman give up his powers in one of the movies so he could have sex with lois? typical man LOL

jim Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

I haven't followed the show , lately, but was enthralled by it early on. I am a fan. I liked the acting, and I thought The Lex Luthor character was acted the best, but the others were great also...I read " Superboy ", when I was a kid! Flying would be nice, and maybe the uniform also.

Shirley Rhuems Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

I Don't care what you say about the show,I love the show,It's one of my favorite show's.And I love Clark and Lana to.I think Clark can already fly.He took Lana up to the fortress,or don't you remember?

Raven Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

OOhh GRREATTT!!!! Take off something that is interesting and that we watch...
here comes more of that reality CRAP!!!!!

arlene bessette Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

I love the show and I adore clark and lana whats wrong with these people if you don't like it don't watch it who cares I happen to love the show.I don't care who leaves as long as the show continues for a while, but I would like it to get back to the real superman comic book he should finally fly.

JB Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

To Arwen: I bet you just love David Archuleta, don't you? Man, I hope you kept the receipt for that soapbox of yours.

Geo Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

The show got better with other charactors being involved! If you like comic books you should like SMALLVILLE. Good Show!

Chris Payne Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Who knows, this may be a good thing. We've already seen Cyborg, Aquaman, Flash, Martian Manhunter AND Green Arrow. You never know. . . a young Bruce Wayne may be around the corner.

Troy Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

It is hard to admit this is my favorite show on TV right now. Maybe TV needs more to offer. The explanations and avoiding the powers as the focus of the show has been the strength. How they will handle the transformation to Superman and not have CLARK recognized is beyond me and have awaited how this will be handled. Maybe this is why the creators are leaving as they are now into the super power area and kind of in a corner.

The character development has been very good. I would hope for a good ending season to a great run - Hats off to TOM WELLINGTON - he has made such a large contribution to the show.

Arwen Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

I was appalled that this show is so far off of the comic books. This was supposed to be a family show. Not any more. Instead it turned into a soap opera, has too much skin and suggestiveness, which by the way is not necessary for a good show. I couldn't believe that the writers had Clark sleep with Lana. That should have never happened. The Superman I know, never did that. He took his parents standards and morality seriously and lived by them. He stayed true and loyal to one person he married and that was Lois Lane. Its become a show I would never allow children to watch and at times refused to watch certain episodes because of content. I hope the new writing cleans the show up, and tie up the lose ends, and give it ending the worthy of Superman. For those complaining that he is not flying yet. That skill didn't developed until Clark was 18 years old and it didn't happen over night.

Parker Gabriel Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

This program was a travesty from before the get-go. It's long past time Millar and Gough resigned.

kristie Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I watched Smallville up until season 5. Or the season before Johnathan died (I dont' remember which one). I've tried to get back into watching it, but I can't. Lana gives me gas!

charlamaine Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

I am surprised to see the creators leaving before the end of the show. Lana needs to give up the ghost and clark needs to realize she is yesterday's news. I am hoping for a good ending to the show, I am hoping Clark will realize his feelings for Louis.(Isn't this who he should end up with?)

theonebigjohn Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

This show is so far off of the comic book that i'm surprised it has lasted this long. Superboy could fly by his teens and what is with the ugly non-costumes so many of the heros and villians are sporting? I wont even go into why Braniac looks human? like most responders I can't stand the Clark/Lana crap. I have to leave the room every time they do their googly eye dribble.

Rob Grizzly Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

They are leaving because the show has been on too damn long!

SpEd Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 07:37 AM EST

I think the show has done quite well and hope it finishes out good!! Seriously, they should have him as Superman before the end. And what's this crap with Clark having to be taught to fly??? Every other Kryptonian that showed up inherantly knew how to fly...what's the deal with Clark?!?! MAKE HIM FLY!!

I agree, It's Time that Clark be allowed to become Superman. Have a few episodes of him living in smallville as Sups. Then have him realize he needs a real job and move to the City to live.

Aino Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 03:25 AM EST

Well, it isn't a cancellation, but I'm overjoyed regardless. I hope Dawn O. and Co. fired their asses! Gough and Millar are talentless hacks who had no shame in propping up their Pink Blow-Up Doll to the detriment of all the other characters. Good riddance!

lansinar Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 02:28 AM EST

that's too bad... so, bring in bruce wayne and diana prince into the storylines.

ambivalent Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

it really isn't that big of a suprise that they're leaving when you think about it. just look at what the wb/cw did to Angel when it was in its prime. better to jump off the boat than get pushed off with a bag over your head.

and yes, the sooner clark pulls his head out to see that there is a world out there that doesn't revolve around lana, the better.

Phil Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

This last season of Smallville has been one train wreck episode after anouther. Mabey new blood will help, but to be honest, I have little hope. Smallville is suffering thru the same fate that the final seasons of the X-files did in the end.

To the new writers... LOSE Lana

Lauren Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

I really hope this means a Lana-less future for Clark. Isn't she supposed to end up with Pete "The Boss" Ross? Let's ship her off to Stride/One Republic groupie-land with Pete.

Nix Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

i just want to know when that arrogant creepy rich obsessive bastard called bruce wayne makes a guest appearance. maybe in an ivy-league p***ing contest with ollie.

JOKER of the WB Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

The show is doing fine by me except I miss Annette O'toole. Anybody know why she was effectively written off the show ? Was it so Clark could have sex with Lana without Mama's disapproval ?

barkerc Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

For people to say that the show was at its best in the early seasons is just stupid. Those were the seasons with all the "Freak of the Week" angles, whereas S5-7 have had rarely any of those and instead followed more serialized plot.

The Clark/Lana stuff needs to die though.

darrin Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

the show has done very well story wise for being on for seven seasons. if you stopped watching it you really have missed out. people forget this is not about superman but the boy that becomes superman. i am worried about the creators leaving and i'm dumbfounded why they would leave down the final stretch...but i'll still be watching to the very end...when clark becomes superman!!

darrin Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

Jamie Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

I'm glad this is happening for many of the reasons stated below. I'd like to see Clark grow into more of a man. Right now, he's just a "young adult" and it keeps the storylines at such a low level. I also bid good riddance to Lana. I throw my slippers at the television every time she appears.

Bab Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

this show has been crappy for 3 years now... good riddance!

J. Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

BTW, Lex and Lana leaving is so good for this show!

J. Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

Maybe some fresh blood can steer this ship in a new direction. Let Clark become Superman, have him move away from Smallville, to the big city and call it Metropolis. Let him fly! Let him fall in love with Chloe. Why not? This show is so far removed from the Superman-lore, just let it go for broke and give people what they've wanted for so long.

Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

This can only mean the soon to come ending of the show since Kristen Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum are said to be leaving the show this season and possibly only making guest appearances for next.

Sean Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

This show is really good, and I disagree with a recent post --- seasons 5 through 7 have been excellent. However, I hope whoever comes in stops just two things --- 1) Superman getting punked (i.e. bleeding) nearly every episode, and 2) the mass use of kryptonite.

HR Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

I've stopped watching Smallville since Season 3. So, so boring. Almost every villain is infected with Kryptonite. It's okay for such plot to happen 2-3 times, not 50 times. And Superman who cannot fly? How idiotic. I think it's great that the so-called "creator" left the show. New people could easily take this show to a new height. For a much better show, watch "Battlestar Galactica" and "Reaper."

Go Chlark Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Hope this means that the dreary Clark-Lana thing will end. Clark and Chloe would make a better couple!!!!

beef jerky Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

HA HA !!!! YEAH!!! Now the show actually has a chance to survive. I was starting to think the writers were gearing the show toward 2nd graders. It can only get better from here!!! YEAH!

Rev. O.J. Flow Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I'm gonna have to agree with LD in that there's been some good stuff going on this season. There have been some missteps (Pete's brief return for one), but the last couple of episodes have been tight, and I think the April 17th one is gonna be one for the ages. I'm sure Season 8 is going to be the last, I just hope things wrap up well with this surprising news.

LD Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I cant believe any of you that think this show is floundering. It is as good as it has ever been.

Nicole Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Let us pray they were the ones behind the "Lana is every man/woman /mutant's dream" crap. She truly made me hate the show. I love Chloe. They could stand to lose Kara, Lana and Lana. Oh, that is a repeat, but an important one. It would be great have Clark move and save someone other than LANA!

Loranat Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

It is sad that the people who created it, don't get to end it.

Ames Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I think this show has been floundering for a while now. I think this might be a good thing.

Snarf Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Well it can't get possibly get any worse than it has over Seasons 5 through 7 can it?

Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Maybe this will mean an end to the "No tights, no flights" rule!!!

RedRidingHood Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I can't believe this. I'm in shock. I'm not sure what to think, but I have a sneaking suspision this can't be a good thing.
