More details on Kate Walsh's return to 'Grey's Anatomy'

Katewalsh_l Those signature three-inch heels are back! Private Practice won’t be returning to ABC until the fall, but fans of Kate Walsh (a.k.a Dr. Addison Montgomery) can get a quick fix May 1 when the siren returns to Grey’s Anatomy “to explore the thought that you can never go home again,” teases executive producer Shonda Rhimes. In the episode, Addison flies to Seattle Grace at the behest of the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) and she’s ready to set a few people straight. Explains Rhimes, “There are some things only Addison can do surgically, but there are also things that she can say to people that nobody else in that world will.” (In other words, prepare yourselves for a tongue-lashing, Meredith and Derek!)

Just don’t get too comfortable with her homecoming, since she’s only staying for one episode, after all. Says Walsh, “I’m here to do my business in Seattle and then I go back to the L.A.!”

Well, not immediately: Production on Practice’s second season doesn’t start until sometime in May, which gives Walsh enough time to costar as a “crazy lady” in the supernatural thriller Legion opposite Paul Bettany. (It’ll also give Rhimes a chance to find a new exec producer to help her run Practice, though she'll still serve as head writer for both of her series.) Practice was this season’s most popular new drama before the writers strike sent it on hiatus, but the break may have been a blessing in disguise, says Walsh. “How do you promote it when American Idol is on?!” she asks of the series that Practice would have faced had it remained on the air. “I’m cool with coming back in the fall.”

Yep, I also love La Walsh. I will even tolerate Greys for her. Looking forward to seeing her in that movie.

I love Kate Walsh & have been enjoying Private Practice. Greys hasn't been the same since Addie & Burke left & I gave up early in Season 4.

I will watch Addison's ep for my Walshaholic-fix alone.

Kate Walsh is great. One of the sexiest things I've seen is her Cadilac commercial. GRRRR

I adore Kate Walsh so will follow where she leads. Glad to hear she will be on the big screen too. Best of both worlds.

I am happy she got the spin-off as it means more Kate screentime. On Greys she was lucky to get 3 mins a week. One of the plus points of Private Practice is the small core cast. I hope it never becomes bloated like Greys.

Kate Walsh's is going to GA more to boost ratings for GA, and because Shonda Rhimes actually likes the Kate Walsh fan base, and wanted to give them a little treat before the fall.

Talking about different countries reaction to GA, and Private Practice, in Portugal, Private Practice is prime time even for repeats, GA was bumped out of prime time for repeats to give place to Cane. Ouch.

I hate Greys with a passion, but I have watched Private Practice cos I love the cast. Kate Walsh is gorgeous & radiant in the lead. I have fallen in love with her.

All these dramas are superficial nonsense, I'm amazed Greys gets so much praise in the US. Here in Ireland it's seen as a disposable soap opera.

Barbara - PrP's ratings have actually remained fairly constant. Sure it took a fall after the first couple of eps, as is to be expected with any new show. It was pulling averages of 10-11m before the strike. Even over Thanksgiving, it took a 25% hit, compared to Greys 40%.

If you think PrP, the highest-rated new drama is failing, then what about Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Ugly Betty, Heroes etc etc ?, all of which attract smaller audiences.

Some people seem to have pre-conceived ideas of failure just because it is a well-publicised spin-off.

Thankfully it doesn't have to attract Greys figures. I'd rather watch a fresh new show that improves with each episode like PrP, than a show that has been reduced to a teen bed-hopping saga a la Greys purely to sustain ratings.

Addie's guest-appearance will benefit Greys more than PrP. It will be forgotten by Fall. Nice move by ABC to boost Greys during sweeps, which has fallen behind Desperate Housewives this season.

"Addison flies to Seattle Grace at the behest of the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) and she’s ready to set a few people straight"

So that means the Addison with the slick mouth and who didn't take crap from anyone is coming back to GA. The same woman who put Meredith's drawers on the board. That woman is coming back to Grey's. Why can't that same Addison be on PP. I missed the tough, didn't play Addison. She's all wimpy on PP. But PP is better than GA. SIck of all the characters on GA. Without Burke and Addison that show sucks

Shonda should get Alex Young to be the Exec. Producer! That's be cool!

(A.K.A. Kate's husband)

Janie Honestly, there really isn't much to compare outside of ratings and initial fan/critic response. Two entirely different shows really. I think what critics say, the ratings dropping just prior to the strike and Walsh's unneeded return to the GA, says a lot though. Does Grey's Anatomy need to revamp? Sure it does, but the ratings are still huge. It never dropped below the top 3 prior to the strike. But PrP lacks the quality that Shonda had put (at first) into her last show and it shows, not only from a ratings standpoint, but a critical one as well. I think the hiring of a new producer is critical for the show now, but I also hope that Rhimes does get new writers. This is not the OC, this is not Saved by the Bell, but I swear some of the dialog comes straight from it and neither the talented actors, nor the fans that have followed both Walsh and the characters she played on Grey's, Addison deserve that. Honestly Walsh should have never done GA and concentrate on her own show.

I stopped watching Grey's after Addison and Burke left. I will watch Grey's for Addison's episode, then it is back to CSI. I enjoy Private Practice very much.

Congrats to Kate about the movie. She deserves it she is wonderful actress and person.

Marie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

While I am looking forward to my Addison fix, I would much rather watch Private Practice, then GA.

Kate is an amazing talented actress, I am very pleased to read she has a movie also coming out. I am glad she chose a different kind of movie very different from the GA/PP thing. Kate rocks.

janie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:37 PM EST

Barbera, you compared Private Practice to Grey's. Private Practice is a good show, I think. I don't really listen to critics' opinions. If I did, I would have never watched Sienfeld, Cheers, Wings...I think Kate Walsh is as good as her coastars too. She's awsome!

susie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

Is the LA anything like the Iraq? And such as.

MsDaisy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

Love Kate Walsh...Private Practice, not so much. Grey's is lacking without her character.

Barbara Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

Who compared PrP to Grey's Anatomy? I certainly didn't although I did say that Practice is doing fairly okay (but not great) ratings wise just before the strike in part because it was not held up against any ratings giants (giving CSI, GA as an example) Grey's has still got better critical response than PrP has and certainly Grey's received WAY more praise this far into it's first season though. The cast is fine. Walsh is very good and her supporting cast is actually much better than she is, but the simple fact remains, it is not a well written show, full of gimmicks and cheap one shots. I don't need to compare it to Grey's Anatomy, I don't need to compare it to anything. On it's own for a brand new show it should have dazzled both fans and critics alike and it simply has not. It went the cheap route and all of the actors on there deserve WAY better and unless they get it, I don't see a long term future for this show. There's just way better out there.

xyz Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Although I agree that Private Practice needs a lot of improvement, I still can't understand how the same people who praise Grey's Anatomy can criticize it's spin-off. Sure, PrP really needs better writing team, but I could say the same about GA. PrP has fantastic cast, great premise with interesting characters, but it indeed needs better writers to develop better storylines. Actually I think that PrP right now is much better than GA, which is really silly and totally unrealistic show. At least characters in PrP don't sleep with each other in circles yet. I mean I really understand criticism about PrP, but when it is bashed by the same people who praise GA, then I can't get it.

I love Private Practice and I can't wait for the fall! Thank you for this article. Kate Walsh is fantastic! I'm so glad she has earned a much deserved movie role, too. I really do not think it is fair to say the only reason why it did well is because their was nothing elso on. I promise you I would have been watching Private Practice this Spring as well. I actually do not care for American Idol, but that is my opinion. I hope Kate gets another movie too.And Tim Daly.

Quote by Walsh about PrP: “I’m cool with coming back in the fall.”

I'm sure she is. While PrP started out strong in ratings, it dropped quickly and has been (since it's first episode) a critical dud. There's no way it would have withstood Idol or for that matter any quality competition. Put it up against other networks crap and fine, it may stand a chance ratings wise, but try sticking it up against a CSI, or for that matter, it's starter show, Grey's Anatomy, and watch how it stands. Walsh needs the exposure and let's just hope this time off gives Shonda Rhimes the chance to find a quality producer and perhaps a new writing team as well because this show just ain't all that, period. It takes more than 3 inch heels and red hair to have a hit programming. If this show comes back the way it left, it's doomed.

Im so happy she is filming a movie.

Cant wait for PrP and her GA episode.
