Matthewmcconaughey_l How about this for perfect casting: EW.com has learned that Matthew McConaughey has been offered the role of Thomas Magnum in Universal Pictures' adaptation of Magnum P.I., based on the successful '80s television show that starred Tom Selleck. The character, a former Navy Seal turned reluctant detective, seems a sweet match for the laid-back actor. McConaughey, we're told, is reading the script from writer/director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) and will decide shortly. Now the burning questions: Will he grow a mustache for the role? And will our Hawaiian shirts suddenly be cool again? Developing ...

vicky Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

I'm sorry but I just am not seeing it. I just think McConaughey is kinda gross. Magnum had such a mass appeal...women loved him, men loved him. It's because of Selleck. Selleck definitely had the looks but also the charm, charisma and everything else that goes along with it. Plus, he's still an extremely attractive man!!

Magnumommy Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

WoW! What a beautiful guy for Magnum, P. I. ! Great, yes, yes! I wanna watch new Magnum, give it 2 me, yes, yes! Oh, you have so suprised me. Matthew, you are my Maggy P.I. Tom was just your older brother, that's all. Congratulations, Maggy Magnum Matty

Scott Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

No Tom Selleck.....no Magnum.
Another idiotic remake. Selleck is STILL an extremely appealing guy....so why the change??? Sometimes (no, most of the time) Hollywood execs just make me puke.
Long live Tom Selleck and the original cast of Magnum, PI!

Dave Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

I can see it now. This movie might have a chance at being liked by the same drunk college kids who listen to talentless top-40 music and pay no attention to pop-culture's yesteryear, denying the fact that music and movies just aren't what they used to be.

detroit_tiger Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

It's incredibble how Tom Selleck was great for the character like Thomas Magnum. I don't know, is Tom just so perfect for this character, or the character was choosed by Tom's personality. McCaunghty? I think that there is no reason to type new Magnum, P.I. series, but if they really have to, than it must be some professional guy, serious...not just a kid litze Matt Mc...someone...

Tom Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Hollywood is getting dumder than I thuoght. There is only one actor who can ever be Thomas Magnum and that is Tom Selleck any one else is just plain going to suck and so will the movie which I can tell everyone that if Tom Selleck is not playing the role forget it I am not seeing this movie without him!

Joe Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

tom selleck is magnum, there is no one else... it will bomb in the box office

m Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

AWFUL CHOICE FOR MAGNUM!!!!!!!!

Sina Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

I remember last year or the year before that when EW had Matt in their magazine about casting him at the PI. I think it's a horrible decision. He isn't sexy enough and I don't think he look good in a mustache. I think the perfect guy who be the guy who is playing that new doctor on Grey's. I don't know his name but he would be perfect.

Cyncloyanodag Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:46 AM EST

well done, man

joel hill Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

I would not go see the movie if they paid me . Its TOM SELLECK or nothing.

Shannon Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Surely this is a joke... I thought Clooney was up for it? I could handle Clooney, but McConaughey??? No way. This movie will be a joke. McConaughey has little acting ability and little charisma... he does the brainless comedies ok, but that's about it. This is insulting to the Magnum legacy. For once, Hollywood, please do the right thing and cast the originals... as they are... older. If not, then how about a Magnum reunion movie on CBS? It would get big ratings guaranteed.

lizzy Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 04:19 AM EST

Thomas Magnum was such a likeable character due to Selleck. I just don't care much for McConaughey. Judging from the majority of other comments, most feel the same way.

John Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

Boy oh Boy. A Magnum movie without Tom Selleck is not going to work. I would pay triple price to see a new Magnum movie with the original cast. I don't care it they are older, so were the casts of all decent remakes. Casting anyone but Selleck as Magnum would be like asking someone else to have reprised the role of James Kirk in the the star trek movies, absolutely impossible to regain that kind of charm.

Joy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:27 AM EST

Obviously, the producers don't see what a huge following Tom Selleck still has in this country. Do the movie with him or simply forget it. I like MM, but NO WAY am I going to buy him as Magnum. I wouldn't even watch the movie on DVD; it would RUIN all the good memories I have from the show. Forget it. No way. Inconceivable!

sam Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:54 AM EST

McConaughey can do the movie....although he'd have to take a shower first and then maybe grow some brain cells.

J Slyke Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

I also give permission for my name and email to be released to McConaughey, should he ask for it.

J Slyke Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Jelousy is the only reason any negative comments are tendered here.

Matthew McConaughey has it right - if I had the money I would make a few films for the fun of it - hire my buddies - stay stoned most of the time -

And he is the right personality to re-inspire the role of Magnum PI. There is no more Tom Selleck - In fact I may want the show re-named.

Can you see character; surfer with knock out healthy surfer friends who happen to be well educated and each with there own alley of talent, who step in to assist for varing reasons.

He's got the qurky personality, good enough looks, body, and he lives there.

EDUARD HAVILLAND Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

Just don't do the f.. movie if it is going to be something like Starsky & Hutch or Miami Vice. If they are going to come out with some stupid movie just do not do it. Listen to the fans for christ sake. The original cast, Tom Clancy writting the script that is the way to go. Imagin MM with his stupid Texas accent I am not wasting my money to see this great show (best PI show ever with a grea actor like Selleck ) be run to the ground. Leave it alone!!!!

Thomas Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

I heard that maybe William H. Macy may play the part of Higgins. Sounds like it would be a pretty good cast.

sam Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Out of all the characters on television I can think of past and present, recasting the role of Thomas Magnum with anyone other than Tom Selleck would be a huge mistake. Selleck played Magnum perfectly and basically invented the character. Best show and cast ever...leave it to the originals or don't do it at all.

michelle Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

I love Tom Selleck. He was born to play Magnum. That was one of my favorite shows. He is iconic in the role.

Mum Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Lucas and Spielberg didn't reprise Indiana Jones without Ford and Magnum can't be done without Selleck. Period. And find a writer with a better track record than some stupid Ben Stiller movie. Sometimes movie makers have no sense.

Juan Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Keep to the original TV story.
Actors included!

Larry Wong Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

No way,
Ashton Kusher would make a better Magnum if Tom Selleck would not do it.
Kusher played the part in "The Gaurdian,"would be the logical one.

T.C. could be played by Ice Cube.

TJ Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

For me, it's Tom Selleck as an aged Magnum or it's nobody.

annie Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:31 AM EST

Magnum PI was an awesome show because of Tom Selleck. He needs to do the movie and no one else. He was incredibly sexy then and in my opinion...even sexier now if that's possible!

Cookie Gee Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

No way. M.M. could EVER duplicate Magnum's sexy charm and wit. It's just too bad that Selleck has not aged as well as we would like or I would go to see the remake twenty times! I had even named a precious feline of mine Magnum and loved him for 15 glorious years. How's that for a fan! Do not destroy my wonderful memories of Magnum P.I. by filming a remake.

Wave Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Only Tom Selleck can play Magnum PI. Otherwise, don't bother with the movie. What a terrific opportunity to deliver a movie with the original cast members..and the only option that will make any money. Can you imagine making a Star Trek movie without the original cast?

ian Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

this is horrible. especially of the guy who wrote dodgeball is writing the script. it will be the same as the remake of starsky and hutch or dukes of hazard. i am tired of my childhood being tarnished.

ohananani Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

The producers should recognize that only Tom Selleck could reprise the role. He will forever be associated with Magnum.
Write a great script and you will bring in the young audience; as well as win the appreciation of original Magnum viewers......
Matthew McConaughey doesn't have the depth of ability to play the part.
Did the producers not see Fool's Gold or Sahara? Both Matthew and Kate Hudson are over-exposed and box office poison........

RM Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

TM was a big kid but not in the way MM is. He's not right for the rolw. Tom Selleck has aged well enough but not well enough for this role. I love the show and Selleck's portrayal of this character. Leave well enough alone. This movie will flop. I'm also concerned about the script writer. Can the author of dodgeball turn this into anything other than another Starsky and Hutch

anna Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

Only Tom Selleck could play Magnum P.I.

james Valetta Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Yes

Zous and Appolo attack.

Kay B. Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

I love MM, but not for Magnum! Tom Seleck is the only one to play that role. Without him and staying true to the character/story it won't be worth seeing.

Jay Wolff Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

I like MM's work generally. But I grew up with Magnum, respecting Selleck's inputs into the character and the impact on traditional P.I. characters. Sorry, MM isn't the right guy, and I won't see his portrayal if he's cast. Boycott time.

Rick Jensen Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

Tom Selleck and ONLY Tom Seleck for Magnum.

PIfan Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

As a fan of the original magnum pi, you can't easily say that mcconaughey would be perfect for the role. Most fans, or even the targeted audience, would rather NOT see matt play this part. He's better off in roles like how to lose a guy in 12 days. By most men, he's considered girly.

Why not do true to the movie? I think Josh Duhamel, would play a great Magnum. Not only is he Tom Selleck's current coworker on Las Vegas, but he's has that same seriousness, yet sense of humor in the Magnum character. He's also about the same age Tom was he he did the show.

Regardless of my suggestion, please don't ruin this film by putting mcconaughey in this movie. I beg you!

sbouska Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

i am sure the new generation does not want to see some old guy half nude with water dripping for his body wrinkles. There are very few that are able to pick up the perfect part of themselves but i am sure that Matthew McConaughey will do a famous performance in this part just like he does all of his movies. The producers want to catch everyones eye, young and old. Matthew in his Golden years and Tom is his late years. Just like every other movie they are trying to bring back they need newer, sexier, and younger actors and actress to keep their business going and people liking them.

Mikey San Jose Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I was a fun of this during the 80's and have always watched it when it was on a cable channel. Now I am re-watching it from the start via Netflix and remember really how good this show is and what it meant to Vietnam Vets. It will make me sick if they deviate from the story line. I hate to say it, I'm not as opposed to who stars in it as long as they maintain the integrity of the show and time frame. It's a Vietnam Vet etc. not an Iraq vet (no disrespect at all to the fine soldiers over there risking their lives ever moment while I sit on my butt and blog). And keep the show in the spirit of what it is and should be...no campy BS comedies or it will be the worst destruction of something special.

EarlGrayHot Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I'd rather see Tom Selleck reprise his role even if he's older than anyone else. Selleck made the role work and I doubt anyone else can match his take on this character who IS an American icon.

clementinem Sat, May 24, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

how about jeffrey dean morgan as magnum?

Matt Bowers Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

Unfortunately when Hollywood remakes a television series it is not for the fans of the original series. Could you imagine how painful it was for the Starsky and Hutch fans? This is simply Universal's attempt to make a buck and to hell with the fans and the legacy. Mr. Selleck, you have always been my hero, on screen and off, and you have never disappointed me. Not doing a cameo in this movie is just one more example of your high class and style. Thank you for all of your hard work and uncompromising dedication over the years. No one could emulate you.

Come on guys Wed, May 21, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

you're missing the point. Any relatively unknown can play Magnum, but who's going to be the girl?

Tom Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Selleck would be my first choice. McConaughey would be my last choice.

Sam Tue, May 13, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

They need to leave it alone. Matthew McConaughey is no Thomas Magnum. What a joke this remake will be. Magnum PI and Tom Selleck are pure iconic television.

Nick Kitt Fri, May 9, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I have been saying this for a couple of years now and I will say it again.
McConaughey is PERFECT as Magnum and will be great in the role. For those who think McConaughey failed in SAHARA either hasn't seen it or listened to that crybaby jackass Clive "The Jive" Cussler. McConaughey was great as Dirk Pitt and will be equally great as Magnum. It's been said they want to cast Steve Zahn and William Macy as Rick and Higgins. Sounds great to me. If that idiot Cussler can't recognize the potential of that team up,then let the Magnum franchise have them without the deterrent of a bigmouth author gumming up the works. And speaking of bigmouths,Tom Selleck should keep his shut. He had his chance and he's acting like someone killed his cat. Maybe Selleck should call up Cussler then they can both cry in each other's
beer. What a couple of babies !

Matt as Magnum,Zahn as Rick, and Macy as Higgins. It can't get any better.

Cathy, a loyal Magnum P.I. Fan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:41 AM EST

No one can ever truly replace Tom Selleck. But, Patrick Dempsey would be an amazing recast. He's charming, sexy, and is a proven talent in romantic comedy.

jacknut Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Thomas Magnum w/out Thom Selleck is a TERRIBLE IDEA. Thomas Magnum w/ Matthew McConaughey is even WORSE.

Terry Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

I will not pay to see a Magnum,p.i. movie that doesn't star Tom Selleck. (and the rest of the tv series cast members..) Even considering someone like MM is just another example of how out-of-touch the producers are with the public. Casting anyone but Tom as Magnum is an act of sheer lunacy..and whom ever is making the decision to do so is a f@#$%^g idiot!

BillyBob Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 06:15 AM EST

If you have to replace Tom (my first choice) who else? I would say Brendan Fraser would be a good choice. Big guy who can do funny or serious. Even his current co star on Las Vegas Josh Duhamel would be better as a young Magnum. Anyone but Matthew McConaughey, smelly hippie dude.

Joe C Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

OMG I am a HIGE fan of Magnum. the show was a bit slapstick but Magnum was a tortured character, naval Academy Alum Navy Seal Dad killed in the Koream War, this casting is sick, Russel Crowe would be my pick

Mr.T Sat, Apr 19, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

Attention: Imagine Entertainment

Re: Magnum,p.i. Movie

Please,

#1) CAST THIS MOVIE WITH THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES CAST MEMBERS ONLY!! (TOM SELLECK, JOHN HILLERMAN, LARRY MANETTI AND ROGER E MOSLEY)

#2) HIRE TOM CLANCY (OR?) TO WRITE A SERIOUS SCRIPT - ONE THAT TRULY SERVICES THE SPIRIT OF "MAGNUM".

I had the good fortune to work as an extra on Magnum, p.i. during season six. (one episode) That experience left quite a lasting impression. Tom Selleck is truly a distinct gentleman, and one of Hollywood's greatest "leading men". I do not understand why any casting director would consiously elect to use some other actor in the role of Magnum, and to ignore the summation of internet postings. Perhaps you should take a lesson from George Lucas - he is giving us the real "Indiana Jones".

A Magnum, p.i. movie has the potential to be extraordinary - now "make it so!"

Annie Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

Why would I want to go see Magnum PI with a different actor playing Thomas Magnum? I plan on going to see the new Indy movie because it has the original guy, why can't they do that with MPI too? Only Tom Selleck should do Magnum. He made that character iconic.

Caroline Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I loved Magnum PI and Tom Selleck. AND I think the role should have gone to an actor with dark curly hair and dark eyes. HELLO!!!! does anyone out there know who Rory Cochrane is? I beliieve he would be an excellent choice for Thomas Magnum. I like Matthew McConaughey. But Magnum really has to have dark curly hair.P.S. I still love you Tom Selleck.

DJ Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 05:15 AM EST

Excellent idea to remake it. Bad idea not to include Tom Selleck. He is the only Magnum in everyone's eyes. The man and the show were definite icons of television history. One of the best characters and television shows ever.

Mike Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

On the surface, Magnum was a beach bum in a hawaiian shirt and a Tigers cap. Matt could manage that just fine. But underneath, Magnum was intellegent, thoughtful, vigilant, forceful and had a fiercely strong sense of morals. Only Selleck could portray all of those characteristics. Magnum is iconic because of Selleck.

Jim Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

Matt can do it...but Selleck needs to be involved in a big way.

Clay S. Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Your telling me that Hawaiian shirts aren't cool????

adamandia Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

TOM SELLECK IS MAGNUM.....SEXY AND STILL HOT...
NO ONE CAN REPLACE HIS APPEAL...LOOKS CHARMS...GREAT HUMBLE ACTING....CUTE
I MAY BE STILL A YOUNG LADY BUT I STILL AM IN LOVE WITH TOM!!!
MAGNUM PI REUNION...ONLY!!!!

Ruth Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

Both men are extremely sexy in my book. But I would love to see Tom Selleck play magnum again or at least have a major role in the movie as well. Maybe Mathew could be his son taking over the business. Hey!!!!!!!!!?

Philip Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

If it wasnt TS to play Magnum...can anyone one think of someone to play the role besides MM, The only one I could think that might be able to pull it off would be Clooney but even thats a reach. What does anyone else think

Greg Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 05:13 AM EST

A fanatic yes!http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s99/jabberwookie93/McConamagnum.jpg

Kimberly Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

Great casting with Matt as Magnum? No way! You have Tom Selleck as #23 on your list of "50 Actors We'd Watch in Anything" saying this about him.....
"With the perfect mix of movie star good looks and a boyish persona, the famously mustachioed Tom Selleck rocked Magnum, P.I. And His Sexiness cropped up in Las Vegas and Boston Legal — proving that he's both wonderfully throwback in nature while still being modern as all get-out."...
Hmmm...didn't see Matt on that list!

Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

If MM is really going to play Magnum, then I'm gonna be cheering for the bad guys to win and kill him.

Period.

Brian Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

It would be better if Tom came back for the role! This is just nuts!

nikki Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 05:07 AM EST

tom selleck still would be great as m agnum, i just hope they have all the original cast.

Patricia Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

WHAT????
You must be kidding!!??!!
If I have to see Magnum of course I want to see with the ORIGINAL CAST!!!
I loved that serie and I will see again ONLY with the ORIGINAL CAST,otherwise it will be useless!!!
I want TOM SELLECK !!!!

Magnanimous Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

"OH MY GOD!" - Jonathan Higgins

It's hard to believe that Don Belisario, Glen Larson and Floyd Johnson would allow Rawson Thurber(&Co)to ignore what loyal Magnum, p.i. fans really want - A SERIOUS SCRIPT WITH TOM SELLECK AND THE REST OF THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES CAST MEMBERS!!

Come on Hollywood..put your egos on hold and make the most of a rare opportunity! The majority of movie goers that would pay to see a Magnum, p.i. movie are baby boomers that really miss the tv series. Nothing would please them more than to again see the characters(aged)of Magnum, Higgins, Rick and TC together on the big screen. A well written script that brings us into the characters lives as they are today(with all the original tv series cast members)would be embraced by Magnum,p.i. fans worldwide! There are actually websites and internet petitions that clearly make the point.."if it doesn't star Tom..we won't see it." (an example: Magnum,p.i. thread at FerrariChat.com - 50,000+ members worldwide!)

Carl Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING TO RECAPTURE THE 80'S WITH A BIG SCREEN MAGNUM, P.I BUT ONLY WITH TOM SELLECK. TOM IS MY FAVORITE ACTOR AND IS MAGNUM. IF THE SCRIPT WAS DECENT AND THEY ACTUALLY ASKED TOM, I BELIEVE HE WOULD DO IT.

Doug Byrne Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

The best way to have a Magnum Movie , I think, is a 2 hour TV Re-union with as many of the original cast as possible. Let the new younger actors and producers find a New Name with a New Plot for the Iraq Vets. Dont call it Magnum, cause that would be a SIN!

Doug Byrne Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Magnum p.i. was the most unique tv show ever produced. It was a real credit to the VIET NAM VETS. Lets keep it in our hearts as such. Make a new detective show honoring the Iraq Vets, with a different name, but dont degrade the best there ever was. Tom Selleck, is now, and will always be the only "Magnum"!

la tour eiffel Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 06:07 AM EST

(From France),I´m 38 years old.I´ve seen the great "starsky & hutch" tv show and this stupid movie.
Magnum P.I was the best tv serie since them.Tom selleck is Magnum for the fans, he´s looking great ,so why don´t you use Magnum for Magnum Movie???

Filmseye Wed, Apr 9, 2008 at 07:01 AM EST

Dear Gawd! I hope they are kidding about that. They have to find someone else to play the part. He is no Magnum!

Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

Yeah, Eckhart would be totally better than McConaughey. But you'd still need a new script. I don't think this one is going to cut it.

Higgy Baby Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

My pic for Magnum is Aaron Eckhart.

Diamond Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Matthew is no Magnum...good for Tom refusing to do a stupid Cameo. He has tried for years to make the movie, picking up in modern day with the old (and only) gang. Let him do it and make a winner for once!!!!

Jeff Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I like McConaughey, but only want to see Tom Selleck play Magnum. I won't go to or rent a Magnum without Selleck.

cj Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Character should be left to Selleck, it's his legacy. MM should make his mark elsewhere, if TS won't do Magnum, let it rest.

Warren Borton Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Tom Selleck was perfect in the role as Magnum PI. A hard act to follow. What would be good would be to bring back Selleck with McConaughey as the son. That would be interstesting! I like them both.

Wendy Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

This is poor casting. I love MM BUT if they won't consider Selleck because of box office draw they should consider George Clooney he would make a better magnum...

Jim Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

EW is crazy. How is this "perfect casting"?? Thomas Magnum as an overwaxed stoner as played by McConaughey? No thanks. Obviously they've never seen the show.

Jack Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

Do they really have to ruin another fantastic show with a crappy remake? Magnum PI and Selleck was the coolest show ever. It's a travesty to make it into some goofy spoof, especially with Thurber as the writer and Matt as the lead.

Christy Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

Tom's a sweetie. I worked as an extra on the Las Vegas set. We weren't allowed to speak to the actors. Tom was the only actor who looked me in the eye...smiled, and said good morning. Pure class. And he's is even sexier in person. Love the man.

UGH Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

And now I've just read that Kate Hudson is reading the script.
This is definately going to suck.
Too bad someone else didn't get the rights to this before Thurber did.

MagRules! Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

I think Sellecks choice to not have anything to do with this project has to do with the writer/director. If it had been a more reputable person, it might have been different.
And casting could have searched a bit harder. A relative unknown would have been a better choice than McConaughy.

Derek Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

Magnum's little voice is probably telling him to run for his life. Stay away from this movie! Thurber's Dodgeball was a horrible movie...this one will be too.

Liz Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

This is an AWESOME idea!!! I liked the show before but having that good looking Matthew in the lead role with his great acting abilities now would most definitely ensure my watching it again!!!

Allie Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

You have the real thing walking around...sexy as ever and you want to use a fake Magnum? That's crazy. No thanks.

Jack Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

Yep. I agree with most everyone here. The problem is when when you think Magnum...you think Selleck. And when you think Selleck...you think Magnum. Coolest show ever.

Bryan Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Too many people firmly equate Selleck to Magnum. I think McConaughey is going to be very challenged to overcome that.

Christine B. Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Tom's the sexiest thing on 2 legs. I would watch him read the phone book. He's the one and only Magnum. Matt should find another project. People will only compare him to Tom and it won't be good.

Herm Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Who cares about Magnum, they really need to get TC right for the thing to fly!

Allie Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

Loved Magnum. Loved Selleck as Magnum. Wouldn't want to see a Magnum impostor. Why bother making the movie without the orginal involved.

Jenn Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Matt is definitely hot. But I don't think he would make a good Magnum. Tom is still so darn sexy! I'd rather see Tom in the movie. It's his character.

Lynn Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Tom was born to do Magnum. He is the only one I can imagine in the movie. I guess Matt would be my second choice. I just really think both of them should be in it somehow. Otherwise, I don't think I would want to see it.

What's Next? Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Have they started casting for the "Cosby Show" movie?

Jonathan Higgins Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Magnum was one of the best shows ever and the dedicated fans that still exist deserve any remake to be done with class and dedication to the characters. McConaughey is not a good choice for Thomas and the supporting characthers of Higgins, Rick, and TC should also be given great deliberation. This movie should not be turned into some MTV-generation comedy that fails to give deference to the cornerstone of the show: loyalty to one's friends, personal integrity, and a good mix of self-deprication and pride. I believe McConaughey is not up to the task and would be a travesty as Magnum.

mh Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Magnum series was different than most - the characters evolved over time. As a huge Magnum fan, i want to see where Magnum, Rick, TC ,& Higgins are now. No Tom Selleck? not interested!

mh Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Duh Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

I agree with the posters about 'Dodgeball'. This Rawson Thurber dude is kind of a novice, nothing significant on his resume. I'm sure Selleck checked all of this out and made the smart choice to opt out of the cameo.
It will probably be a movie geared towards making $$ with a lame script.
Will have to wait and see, won't we?

Topanga Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

"How's this for perfect casting?"???? You CAN'T be serious. Did you ever watch the show????? What a horrible choice. Tom Selleck was and is funny, sexy and classy. MM couldn't shine his shoes. Fire that casting director.

naturboy Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

I think the only way to revisit Magnum P.I., is to have the original cast, and have it be like what are they doing now 20 some years later. I like Matthew but you can't replace Tom Selleck or any of the other characters and do it justice. Please use the original cast and make it AWESOME!!!!!

drella66 Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

This troubles me deeply. Matt and his stubby arms will ruin this...YUCK

cool Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

He is a stong man. It is said he is dating friends on a millionaire dating siote called meetingwealthy.com. His photos and profile are found there.

Will Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:54 AM EST

So sad. So the writer/director of Dodgeball is in charge of the Magnum movie? That was the worst movie ever. Selleck's Magnum was iconic and doesn't deserve that. They need to leave it alone. Show some respect for Selleck. He owned that character. He's right not to get involved. Go Tom.

BB&B Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 05:50 AM EST

Gosh! Another remake! First the A-team and now Magnum PI. There are so many great books out there that could be movies if the industry would quit trying to rewrite the stories and make the movie according to the book. After all, the studio execs didn't make these books best sellers, the PEOPLE did because they liked them as is. This is a lot of the reason that authors won't sell movie rights to their books. No one can take the place of George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz, Tom Sellect and company. Why try?

Joy Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 02:01 AM EST

WHAT? You've got to be kidding me! I'm sorry, but Matthew cannot fill Tom Selleck's shoes; not in a million years. They need to make a movie with the original cast. I think movie executives would be very surprised at the ginormous number of fans that Mr. Selleck still has. I could never see anyone else on the role. Sorry!

Jack Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

Tom's the man. Magnum was the coolest show on TV. If Tom can't do it, I think Matt would be a good choice. I'd see the movie because it's Magnum, but wish they could get Tom be in it.

Josh Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

Wow. People are really protective of Magnum and Selleck. Says alot about the actor and the show I think. I was really young when it was on, but remember my mom and dad watching it all the time. I would like to see the new Magnum movie, but then again, maybe I should just rent the original series from Netflix. Way to go Tom for giving us Magnum.

Tom Selleck Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 12:36 AM EST

Perfect casting? Are you kidding? I'M THE ONE AND ONLY!

Stephen Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

Listen. Matt's great - but they're missing the point. We LOVE Magnum because of those guys that we fell in love with back in the early 80's. I was about 10 and have recently rediscovered the show on Slueth. I JUST CAN'T SEE IT WORKING WITHOUT OUR ORIGINAL GUYS. I think the studio is banking on the support of all the loyal fans that will be disappointed without our cast, but will still buy a ticket. Maybe they shoot it in Newark too. Tom, baby, how can this happen without you? Sorry to be aggressive but I have had a few Old Dusseldorfs tonight!

Stephen Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

Uilleam Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

Matthew McConaughy does not have the charisma of Tom Selleck. If they can't do a reunion movie, then just forget it. No one wants to see Mr. I Luv Myself playing the part of Magnum.

Debra Poirier Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

THERE IS ONLY ONE MAGNUM PI AND THAT IS TOM SELLECK . ENOUGH SAID .

J. Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

I'm sure this movie will suck, because Dodge-Ball sucked balls. McConaughy might be a decent Magnum, but I doubt the script will be any good. And he better grow the mustache!

greenpaz Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

They already did a Magnum P.I. movie of sorts. It was the first and second episodes of Season Three, called "Did You See the Sun Rise?" It was the show at its best. Don't get me wrong, I think McConaughey could do as good a job as anyone. But I don't see it being very good nonetheless.

Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Oh no!! Tom Selleck is the only P.I. Magnum. McCoghanaully will not bring justice to this character

Mike Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I recently read an interview that Tom Selleck gave, and in it he said that he absolutely would NOT do a cameo in a new "Magnum PI" movie. He said that too many times a remake is done so badly that the producers try to get the original actors to do a cameo to legitimize the remake, and therefore offset the poor quality and hope to ensure good box office receipts anyhow. I say, good for Tom Selleck. It's about time someone says "no" to all of these inferior remakes.

maxwell19596 Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Here is Rawson on the Magnum Movie script: "It’s Magnum Begins. When we meet Magnum, he’s not yet a private investigator, but by the time the story ends, he’s hung up his shingle. I’m working through a first draft now, and it’s been so much fun — currently Magnum and TC are bickering in a sugar cane field that’s been lit ablaze by the bad guys. It’s going to be an unapologetically great action movie. That’s a promise." He also went on to add "The show itself struck such a smart balance of mystery, comedy, action, and character that I hope to emulate it as much as possible." Sooo now time will tell. From what I can gather on the net Tom Selleck won't have anything to do with this which is a back breaker.

Sara Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Selleck is tall, dark, and handsome. Matt definitely has the handsome part down, although I think Tom with his huge dimples may be one step above him! I think Matt will do an ok job, but come on...there's really only one Magnum!

missy Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Sorry Tom Selleck is Magnum PI. Matthew is in not in the same league.

Paul Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Well, it's better than the Nic Cage rumor...

vw Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I LOVED Magnum and I reeealllly HATE this idea!!!! Matthew while I love him is no Magnum and I am way over people messing with my favorite shows!!

marsupial witherspoon Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

GROSS!!! First of all, has hollywood simply run out of creative people. What's next a Gillian's Island movie? But Matthew McConaughey, cant we start using some fresh faces or different actors, he is soooooooo annoying. Pretty to look at, but terribly predictable and a one note actor! Oh well...yet another movie I won't see.

Ben Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Wow. McConaughey would have some big shoes to fill I think. But I guess it could work. I can understand them wanting to introduce Magnum to a new audience. He was the coolest. I just wouldn't want to be McConaughey and try to fill Selleck's shoes, but I wish him luck if he decides to do it.

Lucy Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Nothing against Matt...just look at that picture of him! What a hottie. But I plan on going to see the new Indy movie because it has the real Indy in it. I would go see the Magnum movie if it had the real guy in it too. No offense to Matt, but when you think of Magnum, don't you just see Selleck? Some roles weren't meant to copy. I think Magnum is one of them.

Ames Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

There's something about Matthew McConaughey. He's handsome and charming, but falls flat on screen for some reason. And he's not nearly hairy enough to play Magnum. This movie is a bad idea.

laila Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

And I agree with Mel, Matthew definitely needs to stop with the chest waxing if he's gonna play Magnum!

laila Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Who else out there could really play this role? If they're gonna mae a movie out of a great show like Magnum, might as well get someone who could fit the type!

magnumforce Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Out of curiousity, I IMDB'd Selleck. He was offered a cameo in it and turned it down. He had this to say:
"I tell you what worries me - because I love Magnum and we have loyal fans - is they take these TV show titles, and they buy them and they spend $100 million on special effects, and then they make fun of them and trivialize it. Then they try and get the actor who used to be in it to do some ridiculous cameo to prove to the audience that it's OK. And I will not do that."
Excellent! Tom must have seen Starsky and Hutch.
Well done, Mr. Selleck.

Sue Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Well. They are both the hottest men on the planet, but I think that's were their similarities end. I just can't see Matt as the ultra-cool Magnum PI, but I would love to see a movie version of it. I think I would probably want to see it even more if the original guy was involved somehow.

McConaugheyhey Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Okay but "Failure To Launch" is like girl-friendly porn. Check it out ladies! And there's even almost 2 whole scenes (watching TV w/his lazy friends, in the car mad at SJP) where he's trying and it's awesome. This is the best TV-show-recycled-as-bad-movie casting in quite some time. Talking to you, Stiffler.

MB Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

NO NO NO!!!!
Tom Selleck is Magnum!!!
And I do not care how old he is, he is still HOT!!!

To Scott M. Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Selleck has been playing a cop on tv for the past several years, before that a lawyer and other guest spots. He hasn't done a western since 2003. And what has the NRA got to do with anything? You sound like a crazed Rosie O'Donnell. As I said before, if Harrison Ford (who's older than Tom ) can pull off Indy, then why all the negativity for Selleck. Age has no bearing on this.
I think you're the one with dementia.

McConaugheyhey Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I think I was just young enough to be repulsed (if not a little leery of) the the man with the nasty moustache and the short-shorts. I remember wondering what the heck my babysitter saw in that icky old guy. Selleck was much better looking on "Friends". The Magnum show bored me to tears. I remember questioning the neckerchief on Rick. I recognized terrible acting even as an 8 year old. Sorry to poop in the punch bowl, folks. I think McConaughey is a SLAMMIN choice. And I would by tix. So there!

MagnumLover Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Yes, McConaughy can act if he's got a good script. But if they're going to turn Magnum into a shirtless, brawny womanizer, I won't be putting down $$ to see it. If the script is good, then I think McCon could pull it off. But I still think Selleck could do it. Problem is, Selleck hasn't got the celebrity clout this guy has right now. MM can 'bring it' at the box-office.

Scott M. Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

I don't know what all youpeople are talking about. Intelligence and charm? Besides CLooney, who might actually be even better for the role (he already has chest hair), McConaughey is pretty damn good. And since we know Clooney wouldn't go anywhere near this, and McC's movies have not exactly been hits at the BO (Lost & Found anyone?), this might just be the right move for everyone. Dodgeball could've been so much better if Vince Vaughn hadn't phoned in his performance, and as a former buddy of Rawson's from college, I hope this does very well for him. But all the "Selleck IS Magnum" talk has got to go. The man is over 60, shills for the NRA and does westerns (LV was cancelled after his first season on it). Selleck IS Charleton Heston now, without the dementia. Would anyone want to see Heston in a remake of Planet of the Apes now? I don't think so. Get over it people.

Ben Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Either use the original cast or I won't see it at all. I cannot picture the stoned gay bongo player as Magnum. Another stupid idea from people who think they need to recast Snake Plissken with someone other than Kurt Russell.

Truc Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

I agree with Theresa, just use TOM SELLECK!

Truc Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

It will fail. Miserably.

Theresa Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

These casting agents need to be replaced! MM is a disgusting choice to play Magnum. Why not cast Tom Selleck in the role? The man is as gorgeous and sexy as ever and would be the ideal choice.

Robbie Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

I just clicked on this article to see the picture. Sigh.

Heather Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

I have to admit, he's the first name attached to the role that has even a remote chance of being right. I'm just not sure if he's got the ability to play Matthew AND intelligent. (He's done both, but not necessarily at the same time.) Still say that Tom Selleck should be Magnum. He's not that old!

Scott Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

If McConaughey accepts a Magnum PI movie, with the director of Dodgeball no less, then he truly has given up on his once-promising career. I remember when people were calling him a young Paul Newman when A Time To Kill came out. Now he's just become a shirtless beach-bum punchline.

RH Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

Another day, another battle in the war against shirts.

Sina Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

He would be horrible for it because he is such a one not character. This is all y'all fault EW. In one issue a long time ago, y'all suggested him for the role of Magnum PI!

FOR SHAME EW!

Jim Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

I grew up with Thomas Magnum as one of my heroes, and I'm really worried about this choice. Magnum was actually a pretty complex character, and I'm worried that the producers will go with a "Starsky and Hutch" approach and make a mockery of the original.

chris Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

Selleck is Magnum leave it at that don't make a movie version,it would be lousy like all the other tv shows redone for the big screen but eddie sullivan has a good idea if thor or captain are cast with known actors in the lead mm good choice for either

Mel Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

Only if McConaughey grows chest hair.

Dave Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

Dukes of Hazzard and Miami Vice remakes were both horrible...now they're trying to ruin the classic Magnum PI too?? Show Tom Selleck some respect and leave it alone. He owned that role. Matthew is ok...he's just not cut out to be Magnum.

Duh Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

Why can't Tom be Magnum?? If Harrison Ford can brandish guns and run about doing Indy, so can Tom. He's still got it.
But then if it's gonna be a McConaughy-type scripted character, forget it. Magnum had class.

Elizabeth Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:47 AM EST

Why do we have to redo these TV shows as movies? Aren't there any books out there to adapt? Maybe Hollywood should take a clunker of a TV show (Cavemen comes to mind) and make a movie out of that... oh wait, that was Encino Man.
I love Matthew, I think that type of character would work for him, but try it under a different name - and not Magnum's son.

oldenough Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 06:19 AM EST

I can't think of a single actor out there today who would/could do it as well.... that being said, if they are going to do it, MM could be the one to pull one off... how about as his son????

Jack Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 05:54 AM EST

Selleck is Magnum. This is a blunder if it happens. It looks like they want to make a mockery of that great show.

Jason Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 04:36 AM EST

Magnum was the best show on TV. I think it would be great to introduce Magnum to today's audience. But not with McConaughey. He just doesn't have the intelligence and charm Selleck has.

chelsea Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 03:44 AM EST

I love Matt. He's absolutely gorgeous and awesome. But I don't think he would make a good Magnum. I think Magnum PI was as popular as it was (and still is) due to Tom Selleck. He had boatloads of charm and charisma. When you think of Magnum PI...you automatically think of Selleck. Sorry Matt!

ME Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

I think they could find some original material for this very good actor. It is a compliment that Tom Selleck's character is still popular after so long, but let Tom do the character again, if he wants to, and find something new for Matthew!

ja$04n Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

"oh, do we really need this?"

I can't think of any movie we really need.

If a movie sucks it's not the actor's fault, it's the screenwriter's. Matthew McConaughey would make a great Thomas Magnum, and if the movie is worth anything, I'd go see it.

mrclean Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

oh, do we really need this??

Eddie Sullivan Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

He would make a good Thor or Captain America if Stan Lee-Marvel decides to make those into movies. But Magnum- I don't really think so.

Keith Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

I see it!!!! I am a huge fan of Mr. Selleck and have seen every episode of Magnum many times, bout the DVDs... I can see it and think it would be great as long as Mr. Selleck and buddies were in it in some way and gave their blessings to the project... I know Mathew would also want their blessings as well and think he would do a wonderful job as Thomas Magnum...

MsDaisy Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

Well, we've hit the bottom of the barrel, haven't we? Tom still looks mighty fine...much better than the smelly slob pictured above.

Javier Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Yet another TV show turned into a movie. Wow, the industry has really run out of ideas.

Silv Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

Tom Selleck IS Magnum P.I.

Sorry, Matthew, you're no Tom Selleck.

Sandy Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

You have got to be kidding! I'm a Matthew McConaughy, but Thomas Magnum he is not. If they don't want to show Magnum 20 years later using Selleck and company, why bother.

maxwell19596 Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

This could be good. Will it be good? Ha who knows. I really like Tom Selleck, and can't see them making this movie without having him, and Magnums two freinds making a cameo just like the episode of Vegas that was on recently that featured all three of them. Rawson is a very good writer so I say bring on Hawaii again woot!

Paul Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

There is no way that people can see anyone but Tom Selleck in this role. It would be like asking someone else to play Jack Tripper or the Fonz.

JOJO Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

He could not possibly be Magnum. He failed in Sahara and would fail in this. They need to keep looking.

Jill Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

I loved this show. I hope they do it intelligently (Bond style) with a bit a wit. Maybe Tom could have a cameo as whoever?
