Ayeletzurertomhanks_l Ayelet Zurer has landed the coveted role of Vittoria Vetra in Sony Pictures' upcoming Da Vinci Code prequel Angels & Demons. While the studio won't confirm, sources close to the production tell EW.com that the Israeli actress (who played Eric Bana's wife in Munich and was last seen in Sony's Vantage Point) has been cast opposite Tom Hanks in the Ron Howard-directed film. The actress was chosen over more well-known stars, including Naomi Watts, who had been in talks for the role, according to previous reports.

Zurer's character is the daughter of CERN physicist Leonardo Vetra. Following her father's death, Vittoria pairs with Robert Langdon (Hanks) on a journey to uncover the mystery behind her father's murder and stop a terrorist plot. Sony has yet to cast the roles of Maximilian Kohler (director of CERN) and Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca (aide to the Pope). The production was delayed late last year due to the writers strike. It is now set to begin filming in Europe in June, eyeing a May 15, 2009, release date.

Sorry, i mean "Audrey Tautou" not "Audree"

Panda Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

I think Tom Hanks is WAY GOOD to be the actor, and about the new actress, i prefer Audree Tautou (not sure 'bout spelling). Any same idea?

Ting Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

i think Tom Hanks is one hella good actor....he is the one for Angels and Demons! and the girl...her face is not that bad...and what's wrong with haveing an isreali as an actress???

angela Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

I can't find any charm in this New actress, Zurer, i lookes at other pictures of her. it seems there has been a spileberg connection here. he helped her come to LA, the truth is this book- needs more "angel looking face, and less demone" NOt excited about this at all, and thinking that there are so many better choicess here. Salma Hayek? Penelope cruz? Valeria Golino?

RON HOWARD.... are you crazy? completeley NOT the caliber of actress that is needed for this , Namoi wattz, much bettre, and many many actresses would havedd been better then this "manly" faces actresss from Isreal, who WILL not be convincing with her accent!

Why would someone be named after the thing you put your shoelace through?

silvia Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

hey are you guys crazy??Iam 100% italian and this lady got nothing of italian, why not cast an italian actress perhaps?! Andate tutti al diavolo....ciao

Jimmy_Damintz Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I am an idiot?! She's has to sneak up on a glass of water!

I like Tom Hanks but I don't think these books will translate to movies too well regardless of who has the leading role. There are too many high-brow details that cannot be pointed out in a movie. Plus with the stories taking place in Europe and all of the historical references, leads to a boring movie. It'll be OK for us that read the books but everyone else will be snoring.

Zurer is an amazing actress.
She played in the Israeli version of "In Treatment"

I agree that A&D was a better book. I was also disappointed with the casting of Tom Hanks. I didn't enjoy the Di Vinci Code (movie) because of the casting. How aggravating!

cassandra Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I love Tom Hanks and really liked these books, but I was kind of hoping that they would recast the part for this movie. I did not like him in DVC at all.

Earl Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

I thought the first film was lousy and at, times, laughable. First time I've seen Tom Hanks sleepwalk through a role, sadly. Ron Howard was out of his element.

Maybe the follow up will be better, but who cares? If want globe trotting adventure, we got Indy Jones and James Bond back!

Dee Thompson Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I read The DaVinci Code and saw the movie and I was pleased the movie was close to the book, although I found the casting of Tom Hanks to be jarring, at first.

I look forward to seeing this movie, as well. If I had not seen her name before seeing the photo, I could totally believe Zurer as an Italian. E una bella donna, non brutto! Ciao.

I am so excited for this movie, this book was way better than the Davinci Code & they should have done the movies in the right order. I didn't realize it was so far delayed. Bummer.

Ceballos Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I'm keeping an open mind if only because he couldn't possibly have any less chemistry with this actress than he did with Audrey Tatou.

hey Jimmy Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

You are an idiot. Ugly? Grow up.

Jimmy_Damintz Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Shes a pretty ugly broad. I was picturing someone much prettier.

I think this was a better book than the DaVinci code as well. This has more of a "concrete plot". You can tell that the Davinci code is a sequel.

Totally agree that A&D was better than the da Vinci Code. Both great books.

Moo Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I loved reading the Da Vinci Code and was excited when they made a movie of it but was disappointed when Hanks was slated to star. I loved Hanks and his movies but this was not the role for him. I read A&D after the DVC book and didn't like it as much, was kind of disappointed actually. Needless to say, I will not be seeing this movie.

Ayelet Zurer was amazing in Munich. However, if memory serves, the Vittoria Vetra character in Angels and Demons was Italian. So how was Naomi Watts even up for consideration? Hopefully Ron Howard does this book justice. It was even better than the DaVinci Code. Note to Ron - please don't dumb this down for the masses.

David Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

OMG! another pop-film-trash from the Tom Hanks-Ron Howard duo!!
Sheesh!

I got Condoleeza rice on the megaphone. Everybody wants to eat a dinosaur.
