Ewan_l Casting of Sony Pictures' Da Vinci Code prequel Angels and Demons is shaping up quickly (see yesterday's post about Ayelet Zurer). Ewan McGregor is in negotiations to take on the role of Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, the Pope's closest aide, who helps Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) with his investigation. McGregor, who will be seen in Fox's Deception, opening Friday, is currently filming I Love You Philip Morris opposite Jim Carrey. Angels and Demons is being directed by Ron Howard from a script by Akiva Goldsman. Brian Grazer and John Calley are producing. Filming is set to begin in Europe in June, with a May 2009 release date.

Excellent! This is shaping up to be a must-see film. If only they could have replaced Tom Hanks.

Blasphemy is defined as the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God...if you are saying that Tom Hanks is God then you are actually the one committing blasphemy as the secondary definition is the act of claiming the attributes of deity.

Ewan MacGregor made the Star Wars prequels better than they could've been as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. He'll save Angels&Demons from itself!
Hopefully,Hanks won't have that horrific mullet!

Tom Hanks is an excellent actor, but just not fit as R.L. David Duchovny was always my ideal R.L. Ewan MacGregor is perfect here.

Now I have to go see this movie, dangit.

Ewan would be awesome in this movie. I think he is very under rated as an actor.

I totally heart Ewan and the camerlengo is a good role. Hanks and the Bono 'do was too much in the last one, but honestly he wasn't what was wrong w/ that film. I think Russell Crowe (with the glasses!) would've been ideal but I guess it's too late now.

People should read more carefully he is taking the role of Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, the Pope's closest aide, NOT Tom Hanks role of Robert Langdon! He will be good, I only wonder how come Tom Hanks who is a charming man did NOT let his charmed come true in his role. I hope it WAS a director idea and that it will come true this time!

Actually, I think all the posters here understand that Ewan is taking the Camerlengo role. We are just happy he is. And some of us wish Tom Hanks could have been replaced. :)

i cannot wait for this movie!!! i loved it more than the da vinci code!

I think Clive Owen would embody a more realistic Camerlengo. The character's duplicitous charm and personality is more suited to roles that Owen has played. McGregor seems more transparant in the nuances of multi-personalitied emotions than this role needs.

Wow...having read the book, I think he'd be GREAT in that role. Really good casting. Now can we just do something about Tom Hanks' hair? Please???

When I read the book, I had a picture of the hot Croation doctor from ER. I think he would be a perfect fit for this role!
