The truth is out there…as a trilogy? X-Files creator Chris Carter has revealed that he has ambitions to make at least one more movie detailing the adventures of Mulder and Scully. “We would like to make another film,” Carter told EW.com on Friday, prior to his
appearance at this year’s New York Comic Con. “We’re not under the
illusion that it’s a given; we’ve got to perform with [this summer's X-Files: I Want to
Believe] in order to give it another day.”
Another installment would make three films in the franchise, following 1998’s The X-Files and the forthcoming, Carter-directed, I Want to Believe, which debuts in theaters July 25 and is a stand alone monster-of-the-week-type venture. But Carter suggested that a future movie might re-engage with the original TV show’s overarching alien-invasion plot. Doing so could be timely given that, according to X-Files mythology, the final stage of said invasion is due to start in December 2012. “Well, we didn’t think that one up,” Carter said. “That is actually part of the literature. It is a Mayan date. But I think we’d like to revisit that whole storyline.”

I bought the complete series box set about 4months ago and ugh i have only finished the 1st season! Its very very good but im always trying to catch up with my dang DVR i dont have time for dvds anymore!
Omigod if that happened it would be amazing..I can’t wait for this film!!!!SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!Really hope it does well so we get another stab at the mythology..
As a loyal “X-Phile,” I would absolutely love to see another film featuring Mulder and Scully in the works. Happily anticipating this summer’s sequel for now–July 25th can’t come soon enough!!! X-Files rocks!!!
YES!YES!YES! to a 3rd X-Files movie. Can’t wait til July to see XF2.
Yes, to a third movie…only if you include Doggett and Reyes.
Yes to a third movie… only if I can be in it!
I recently just got started with watching X-Files and can I tell you, Im hooked. It is so much better than Lost. I do prefer the alien-invasion mythology and would love to see it pick up on the big screen! They brought back the Terminator story from movie to tv series. They can do the opposite with X-Files…tv to a trilogy of movies.
X-Files “better” than Lost? Umm… Whatever.
I was watching X-Files almost from the beginning (the last episode from season one was my first) and I stuck with it until well after the show was truly falling apart (somewhere around season five or six, the show lost its focus, and I stayed a season or two after that). I can only guess you haven’t gotten to those later seasons yet, when it became clear that Carter was just making it up as he went along and that pretty much NOTHING would ever be resolved satisfactorily. Compare that incredible work Lost is doing (especially this season!) and there’s just no comparison.
Lost is gaining momentum, not losing it, as the show races to a pre-determined end point. It’s the very opposite of X-Files, a once-great show that didn’t know how to wrap up its (many) loose ends and became a parody of itself by the end.
OK, now that I got that off my chest. “I want to believe” this new X-Files movie will be good. But I Have my doubts. It’s been a long time since the series ended, and even longer since the show was still “appointment TV” for many people. Maybe something closer to those earlier, more stand-alone, episodes like “Clyde Bruckman” or “Jose Chung” would be the ticket? I just think the title is weak (Isn’t this like calling a movie “Star Wars: May The Force Be With You”?) and it’ll be tough to find an audience with all the competition this summer. But I will see it, and I will hope for good things.
I’ll be there. This was my favorite show as a kid (this and Buffy). I won’t miss this.
Shaun, I respectfully disagree with you. You’re comparing apples to oranges. Compare seasons 1-4 of X-Files with Lost. It’s not fair to say that Lost, which hasn’t yet had the opportunity to hold it together — or fall apart — in season 6, 7, 8, etc. to a show that has finished its run. Did X-Files fall apart after season 6? Yep, definitely — got worse each season. But those first six seasons (and a fair percentage of seasons 6-9) were absolutely masterful. If comparing the first four seasons of each show, I’d point out that Lost hit a sophomore slump that X-Files didn’t suffer. That Lost has rebounded is a feat unto itself, but the slump and loss of focus still happened. Both series are quite excellent, and I’m looking forward to the new X-Files movie.
Oh — I agree with you, though, about wishing the tone could be like Jose Chung or Clyde Bruckman. Unfortunately, those episodes were written by Darin Morgan, and Darin quit writing before the series ended. In fact, he acted in Small Potatoes solely as a way to fulfill his contract, because he owed them one more script. Too bad, because I think his scripts were absolutely my favorite in the entire series. Chris Carter’s episodes on the other hand….
I HAVE A MULDER ACTION FIGURE FROM THE 1998 FILM. I HOPE THEY COME OUT WITH SOMETHING FOR THIS ONE.

The X-Files is finding a new audience, and at one time was at the very pinnacle of television. There are some fantastic funny stand alone episodes, as well as the terrific mythology episodes. Chris Carter is on the money making this new movie a stand alone fun “episode”. Then going back to his grand plot. The first four seasons of The X-Files has some of the best shows television has to offer. If you haven’t seen them buy the DVD sets today! I promise you won’t be disappointed. Thats my rant and I’m sticking to it…LOL
A third X-Files film? Absolutely!
X files is far better than lost. I would love another x files movie as long as it is only M&S and the regulars (no next gen, people like D&R thanks.)
Bring it on Carter. I would love a 3rd X-files movies and I am definitely looking forward to seeing I Want to Believe in July. I have been a loyal fan of the show since the beginning and I stuck with it till the end, and I have to say that no other show on television has even come close to The X-Files, not even Lost.
Believe Again 7/25/08
OMG. PLEASE. YES.

“Shaun, I respectfully disagree with you. You’re comparing apples to oranges.” – Absolutely! The genre is even different.
I agree with Melissa. Comparing Xfiles with Lost is like apples and oranges. Xfiles is way ahead as it came on air in 1993 and Lost only came on air 11 years later. It was original for its time and nothing comes close to the XFiles. Even the LOST producers took inspiration from XFiles and paid homage to Chris Carter. You can re watch episodes of XFIles but you can’t do that with Lost.
Anyhow, XFiles made over $1 Billion for Fox Network and it was not going to let it finish in Season 5 or 6 as Chris Carter wanted. So, long live XFILES through seasons 9 + 2 movies. Bring on the movie…..
A third movie that wraps up the invasion storyline and fits with the 2012 date would be the best way to cap off one of the great story arcs of our time.
Steve Foerster is absolutely right. It’s been driving me crazy for years that the series never felt finished. As brutal as it would be, the 3rd movie should come out 12/2012 hehe.
I’ll be wearing the X-Files shirt that I haven’t worn in years to this film. The truth is out there, and that truth happens to be that this film will probably rake in enough cash to justify a third film. At the very least, I hope that it’s better than the first. My brother and I liked it, but weren’t thrilled with the “extended tv episode” feel.
I’d say that Lost in my fav. show on Tv right now since Arrested Development was canceled. I I love it and haven’t missed an episode. But the X-files is My Fav. show of all time (tied with arrested development). I didn’t miss an episode of The X-files in it’s 9 year run. It’s hard to say lost is better because it’s only into it’s 4th season. It’s a very creative show, but still very young. The thing I think the X-Files has on lost is the amount of stories It could cover. It wasn’t limited to anything. Aliens, Ghosts, Bugs, Boats, Monsters, Conspiracy Theory, and inbred families. Until this season of lost, you were stuck on a island where not much could happen. I love Lost but It doesn’t come close to being as good as the X-Files.
I’m excited about the new movie, but my question is this, Where’s Skinner? I”ll be so disappointed if he isn’t in the movie.
I loved this show, except for the last couple seasons. But it’s time to move on. The horse is more than dead, it’s decayed and rotted, the bloated carcus is now nothing but bones. Do we really need to come along and beat it a little more? Leave it alone, let it rest in peace and dignity instead of desecrating its memory with some desperate attempt to “get it back.”
This gets me soooo pumped! A third X-Files movie would be awesome. Looking forward to July 25.
can’t wait for hulk and iron man
