Drew Carey's 'Price Is Right' ratings are soft, but should grow

Categories: TV Biz

Priceisright_l There has been no shortage of contestants willing to line up for hours outside of CBS Television City in Los Angeles to appear on The Price is Right with Drew Carey — but there are definitely fewer viewers tuning into the CBS game show now that Bob Barker is gone. According to comparisons of the first quarters of 2007 and 2008, Carey has attracted an audience that's 15 percent smaller in the first half-hour of the show (4.5 million viewers vs. 5.4 mil) and 13 percent smaller in the second half-hour (5.6 mil vs. 6.5 mil).

But there is hope. To help boost awareness of the Carey-hosted Price, the net aired two primetime specials last month to favorable results. The first special on Feb. 22 won its time slot in viewers (9.35 mil) and key demos. The second, on Feb. 29, got an even bigger audience (9.49 mil) — and gave away $1 million in cash, a first for the long-running game show. Four more Price specials are already in the can, the third of which airs March 7.

Media buyers say the dip in viewers shouldn't be cause for concern. "I think any time you make a transition, especially from somebody as established as Bob, you'd be worried if he were off 50 percent," says Bill Carroll of the Katz TV Group. "But if he's not off by more than 15 percent, it's a positive sign. Over time, you have to assume he'll build back the audience. CBS is probably pleased."

The Majority RULES.
Drew Carey is the WORSE game show host for T.P.I.R!!!

billie Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

i hate the price is right now drew carey is a motor mouth does'nt know when to shut up and talks so fast seems to be in a hurry and i wish he would quit saying ' want to say hi to anyone ?]

Debbie Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Drew Carey is so boring as the host. He should be replaced by John O'Hurley or Richard Karn!

betty zimmers Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Drew Carey was thoughtless and obnoxious today making fun of an older woman who was attempting to win a pair of motorcycles. People should not have to suffer his sarcasm in order to play a game that has been on the air for years and used to be enjoyed by millions. Get him off the show before you lose your entire following.

Jenna Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Wow, I have been watching this show for the last few days due to the fact NOTHING is on during that time. I had watched once before and thought Carey lacked enthusiasm but thought he was just nervous. I am shocked to see even after all this time anyone would think otherwise. Drew Carey is MISERABLE and condescending. To think there are people here who think he is happy. Makes me wonder how sad you are in your own lives that you are seeing a happy man on that show. I feel so sorry for him that he feels so disgraced to be reduced to a game show. And that is exactly the vibe I am getting. He looks at the excited contestants like they are idiots and I cannot say he talks to them much different. What show are you people watching? Because it is NOT Drew Carey that is excited it is the contestants. And to the lady who said Bob Barker acted better than his contestants, WOW, you really are watching completely different shows than the rest of us.

NoWay Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

Drew Carey is a disgrace to television. They should have just retired the show. I refuse to watch it now.

MARILYN JACKSON Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

I THINK DREW IS DOING A GREAT JOB. HE
IS VERY EXCITED FOR THE PEOPLE. I THINK BOB HELD EVERYONE AT A DISTANCE
BECAUSE HE FELT SUPERIOR TO THEM. DREW
IS SO PERSONABLE ---THATS GOOD

Nancy Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

I have stuck with Drew from the beginning. I think he has gotten better with each show.

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

I love Drew very very much. I love to see him every night. He is a kind and very nice person. I love the way he laugh. I hope that he will stay forever.

chuckfarley Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

DREW IS HORRIBLE. This used to be my favorite game show.

The price is WRONG beeeyach - Happy Gilmore

Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Oh and I don't see how you can say he looks excited, he looks and sounds like he wants to kill himself for taking the job.

bad Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

I use to be excited when I would get up at 10:30 to watch the price is right at 11:00am EST, now with drew as the host its just ... bad I don't like it at all. They need to find another host.

Mud Duck Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

It is amazing how some of you folks always have somebody better in mind. Drew is doing a fine job!!!! He is drawing a lot younger crowd now which will only keep the show going in the future. Dont get me wrong Bob was the man. But you would have never seen him jump up and down when someone won a new car. Drew acts like he remembers when a new car was a huge deal in life. Just remember that change is good. And without it you would still be milking cows, riding in buggies, and you couldnt voice your opinion to the world through the internet.. Go Drew!!!!!!!!!

Sherryl Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

Mom and I love Drew and think he is doing a great job!

Bob V Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

Drew is so incredibly lame compared to Bob - he has zero personality and you can tell he was the clown that was picked on starting at age 10 all the way thru 25. Talk about lack of personality - someone wins a car and it is almost like he is bored being there. Bob was sooooo superior!

Brian Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

I think Drew Carey has done a horrible job at hosting the Price is Right. I am a game show fanatic, and I think I have several better choices for a host. John O'Hurley, current host of Family Feud, or Chuch Woolery, current host of Lingo, former host of Scrabble and others, would have been much better. I even loved watching Tom Kennedy when he hosted the nighttime version in the 80s. What was the thought process behind choosing Drew? Drew is very unexciting, very boring, and in case you have not noticed, he is NOT even funny (How did he make it as a comedian?). Not to mention, the games on Price are not hard to learn, and his explanations of them are very poor. Hate to sound so brutal, but for as great a show as Price is, I have a very hard time watching this tragedy version of Price.

MaryJane Wilcox Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

I love Drew. It is refreshing to see someone as excited as the guests are. And funny.

Mike Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Drew has done a great job. Just because he's not another Bob doesn't mean he needs to go. Drew seemed a little stiff and uncomfortable early in the season but he’s just fine now. One thing I really like about him is the obvious excitement he feels when someone wins something big, he absolutely loves it.

Don’t get me wrong here because I loved Bob, but he just didn’t seem to be very friendly to the guests. He didn’t want them touching him or talking too much and he would get upset with them if they didn’t follow his instructions exactly as he stated them.

I also think Drew is a very funny person. I noticed that the audience didn’t react well to his jokes at first but now they’ve completely warmed up to him. He pokes just the right amount of fun at the show, the guests and himself. It was also very classy of him to make very few changes to the set and to close with Bob’s closing line about getting pets spayed or neutered. I wish him the best of luck!

Josh Taylor Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I know he did great in all. But, I think I heard the audience booed at him. Todd Newton would've made the cut.

Lois Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Drew Carey is insipid. He puts down people. The other day, he asked the occupation of a person and was told "marketing." Drew's response: "Marketing! Ladeeda."

Drew Carey is stupid. He thought Africa was a city, then corrected it, laughing, to "oh, it's a country."

Drew Carey is unseemly to look at. He doesn't need to bounce up and down with the contestants like a fat Teddy bear.

Chris Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

What's wrong with Drew Carey hosting The Price is Right? He's doing a great job!

say no to osama obama Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Drew Carey is the most boring game show host I have ever seen. He needs to go. Maybe they should have had a reality show to choose the next host. He has no enthusiasm and appears to be unhappy or bored.

Sharon Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

Drew Carey is not the right man for this show. He is very boring and has no enthusiasm. I almost fell asleep tonight watching him give away the Big Showcase!! What happened to the Drew Carey we know from the Drew Carey show??

Christopher Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

Why not Todd Newton over Drew Carey? Todd hosts the road show version and has game show hosting experience. Ditch Drew!

pxmas Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

I haven't seen the show in a very long time, but I'm tuned in to the $1000000 show right now...and I really want to change the channel. In fact I have...Drew Carey is not the right person for the job. He has no enthusiasm in his monotone voice and if it wasn't for the "Barker Beauties", it looks like he's ready to fall asleep right on stage. Sorry Drew!

Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I watched it for the first time the other day since Drew took over. It was so bad, I really thought the strange way he was acting was a big joke. I had to think if it was April Fool's Day.

S&S Mother&Daughter Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Take Drew out of his misery as well as the viewers. Nothing personal against Drew, but he is NOT the right man for TPIR.

C-line Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

It is very sad and boring watching tpir now. I always LOVED it until now. I agree with the so many others that said that Drew looks like he hates his job. He looks like he is watching the clock until he gets to leave. Oh, it is sooooooo horrible now.

mimi bobeck Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Get off drew's back, even I think he's
doing a great job! Drew has added some much needed humor and life to this previously dead-pan show. So, BACK OFF!!!!!

Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

I think he hates his life or at least appears to. I wish he could have some enthusiasm instead of going through the motions like it is some kind of inconvenience to be there. Even a million dollar showcase did nothing to get an emotional response. I think stephan hawking could show more emotion than drew

Wesley Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

With Drew, the show doesn't have near the appeal that it did with Bob. Drew has no charm. I can't see women wanting to go up and kiss him.

Chris Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I only look for Drew to host till Season 40 then I look for someone like Doug Davidson or John O'Hurley to take over. Drew's kinda like Richard Karn.

Nancy Sat, May 17, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Regarding Drew Carey on TPIR, is it necessary he ask every cotestant "would you like to say hi to anytone?"--Boring!! The other day he called a woman an old lady and a young girl babe and sweetheart, How rude is that? His remarks about products are not funny and do you think the sponsors appreciate it?

JB Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

Drew Carey is going to do in TPIR, he seems totally uncomfortable on the show and does not seem to enjoy the game. They need to replace him, he makes watching the show unbearable.

delaney Sat, May 10, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

carrey is not suited for this job. he is awkward and stiff. what were they thinking?

Jasper Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

I am watching Drew on the show right now. He appears to be only half 'there'. He seems distracted, bored and looking at the previous comments, he does look like he's cursing in his head. I like Drew, but not on this show.

Ashlee Fri, May 2, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

I'm watching it now, and Drew Carey looks like he hates his job. He looks like he's saying a more than a few curse words in his head when he talks and when he looks into the camera. That's why I googled his name and the show to see if I was the only one who noticed. I guess I'm not! They really should do something soon! Something else! I hope they are "shopping".

magreg Thu, May 1, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Drew is not suited to this show- he needs more opportunity to exercise his wicked sense of humour, otherwise he appears lack-lustre

Ginny Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

I faithfully watched the Price is Right with Bob Barker by recording it for later viewing. Drew Carey has got to go; he acts like he doesn't really want to be there and he doesn't enjoy it either. After Bob Barker's last show, I continued to record TPIR, but no more; I don't even watch it anymore. If the network wants to save TPIR get rid of Drew Carey.

Cornelius Henderson Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

I am an African American who also has grown up watching & enjoying The Price is Right over the years. But I must say Drew Carey is a train wreck! He is absolutely horrible in so many ways, & has only gotten worse. I used to record TPIR daily to watch when I got home. But since Drew took over, it became a total waste of recording space so I stopped recording it. I'm sure that Drew is probably a great guy, but he clearly has never thought enough of his opportunity to properly prepare and bring professionalism & class to what was a classic show. Or perhaps more likely he just does not have what it takes to host this show. His delivery & contributions are unprofessional, silly & juvenile. I abhor when he tells people to hold his hand & say, "alla kazam." Also, how he ends the showcases and the show is so low-key, anticlimatic & depressing. And his sloppy delivery & lack of passion for the pet message at the end is so bad that it would be better left unsaid. Better choice: John O'Hurley.

kathy Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Watching Drew Carrey is like watching paint dry. He is so boring.

Matt Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

Watching it right now. He seems like he's in a hurry to get through the show, like he has somewhere better to be.

Bob Barker Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I have to take a dump.

Mike Worden Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

I just got finished watching TPIRMDS and I must say it looks like Drew is definitely not having fun. He was so monotone tonight that it was pathetic. There was no excitement when the contestants won. I've been a lifelong game show fan as well as a TPIR fan. I realize that anyone who took over for Bob Barker would have a hard time filling his shoes, but I think Drew has had plenty of time now. Supposedly, he knows more than 30 games, but still has trouble explaining them. Even I know more games then he does. Now I have always been a fan of Drew Carey's shows, but TPIR is getting painful to watch. Drew was definately a better game show host on Power of 10 then he is on TPIR. Drew has signed for five years, but I don't think he is going to last. CBS should start looking for a replacement now, before it is too late. I would like to throw my hat into the ring as possible replacements. I know I can do a better job than Drew given the chance to prove myself.

Jeff Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

I am watching Drew one more time and he still stinks as bad as the last time I watched him. He just seems to hate being there. No fun, no enthusiasm...the show doesn't even fit his personality...he never should have taken the job.

Observer Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 02:31 AM EST

I wondered if CBS is trying to destroy the Price is Right. Drew Carey is aweful. He was so clueless at the beginning. He looked so clumsy. He actually had an accident on the set even before he was aired. What's more, instead of him being taylored to the Price Is Right, it looks like the Price Is Right was taylored to Drew. I seen a Price Is Right logo with Drew's black glasses. And, to boot, at the beginning of the show, it doesn't sound right when Rich says "Drewwwwwwwwwwwwwww Careyyyyyyyyyyy". Bye everybody. Don't forget to brush your teeth before going to bed.

Shara Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Drew Carey is a terrible host and a terrible choice! They need someone with more personality and who appears to actually want to be there!
Too bad Howie Mandel is busy.

Yusef Ahmad Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

I grew up watching TPIR, and it definitely is not the same without Bob.

Drew "You have a chance to win. Wouldn't that be nice?" Is he being condescending or sincere? I can't judge from his voice.

Eliot Spitzer Fri, Apr 4, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I'm horny, where is my whore?

Bill Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

Drew Carey is absolutely awful as host of TPIR. He's the anti-Bob. They should have gone with John O'Hurley, who is genuinely charming, engaging and enthusiastic.

jasmine winters Tue, Mar 18, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

drew carey is under-enthusiastic and boring. I tried and I mean tries to watch TPIR and it hurt my head. it has turned into the most boring game show ever. I'm never watching it again.

Jerome Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 05:12 AM EST

What's sad is that this was a pretty cool game and they ruined it by using a host who doesn't know it. It's all about the game, not the host. They should have used Frank Nicotero or Chuck Woolery, people who actually have respect for how a game show works. The worst thing is when Drew Carey makes mistakes that actually cause people to lose, like not telling them they can wait for a spin off. Bob Barker was a great host because he loves game shows and he knew what he was doing. I think they should replace Drew Carey before this show goes from being a car wreck people still watch, to the abandoned car no one notices. The show is absolutely horrible and there is no excuse for keeping a host who has proven so incompetent.

Tim Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

I think Drew is a bit uncomfortable, he stumbles often while explaining things. with a bit of time and practice, I think he'll be fine.
I enjoyed Bob on Truth or Consequences, but I thought he got "creepy" on TPIR

Andy Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

Condescending and rude? Umm, I think those were Bob Barker's middle names as host. He pushed away and mocked fat people and other enthusastic minorities people like they were lepers, he often ridiculed those who didn't know every single game rule like he did (after 4.5 billion years of rote emceeing), and he rarely seemed genuine and often put out with contestants during his last several years as host.

If Bob seemed to enjoy anything, it was the mindless adulation of the totally compliant come-on-down-ers who managed not to fall in any of the aforementioned categories (among others). Drew acts down to earth, mentioning the models by name, easily sharing two-shots with contestants while cutting to commercials and not acting above contestants as if he's some made-for-TV deity.

Heck, even Vanna White said Bob was "rude" to her when she was a contestant in 1980. And has Vanna White ever said anything negative about anyone???

fan Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

i think drew carey is horrible. the beauty of bob barker was that he seemed to really enjoy being there. drew carey seems to make fun of everyone. he's condescending and rude at times.

anonymous1 Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

to purpleone: i do respect ur opinion but to judge drew carey as a host after seeing "a little of TPIR last week" may not be a fair gauge. i had the same feeling in the beginning since i never did like him from his other shows but im hooked on him now (or the show, whichever it is). he is a natural comedian, if not a natural host. i also disagree with graeme's comments about him "uninvolved and unenthusiastic/looks bored to tears." i thought that his snaps are well timed and he also often laughs at himself. please give the show, and him, a longer view. a "little" time will probably not convince u to be a drew-carey-fan-convert.

graeme Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

Yeah, Drew Carey is awful as the host. It's actually really odd how uninvolved and unenthusiastic he is on the show. He looks bored to tears, and it drains a lot of the excitement from the show.

purpleone Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I watched a little of TPIR with Drew Carey last week and I have to say it was THE WORST!! I like Drew and think he's very funny, but a game show host or replacement for Bob Barker he is not. TPIR was one of my fave game shows and it was mandatory that I watched it every day during the summer or on days off from school, but this version is beyond bad. Maybe they should've just pulled the show when Bob retired.

Andy Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 03:25 AM EST

I'm curious what Barker's ratings were in the first quarter of 2006. I think he may have had a boost in viewership after announcing his retirement on Oct. 31, 2006. It's likely more viewers tuned in between then and his final eps in June just to see his much-ballyhooed swan song performances. Making Drew live up to those inflated numbers in his first year just isn't fair -- let's see Bob's pre-retirement-annoucement numbers for a more accurate comparison.
