WGA members to vote Tuesday on ending strike

All signs seem to indicate that the writers' strike is about to end, but there are a few minor details that need to be hashed out — namely, a vote by the WGA membership to approve the proposed contract with the AMPTP. That will happen Tuesday when writers cast ballots at meetings in New York and Los Angeles, according to Writer's Guild prez Patric Verrone, who held a press conference today. He went out of his way to thank Disney president and CEO Bob Iger and Fox head Peter Chernin, "whose leadership was instrumental in reaching this agreement."

In an email message to members, Verrone got more technical, detailing the process to come. "There is, however, another issue to address: whether to lift the restraining order, and end the strike, during the ratification process," he wrote. "We are asking the members to decide this issue [during the Tuesday vote]. A yes vote means you are voting to end the strike immediately; a no vote means you are voting to continue the strike during the ratification process [which will take 10 to 12 days]." The vote on the strike will be separate from ratification of the contract. The former will be held 2 to 6 pm Pacific time Tuesday (writers in New York will have to fax theirs in) — the results of which will be announced that night. Until then, all picketing will be suspended. In the meantime, writer-producers who serve as showrunners can resume their producer duties on Monday. If the WGA membership votes to lift the strike, all writers are expected to return to work Wednesday.

I agree with Molly. Seems Hollywood owes America 1/2 a season's worth of every show that came to a standstill. Why should we get shortchanged? You all got what you want. Now give us our entertainment - and it better be good.

No one - not actors, writers, directors, crews, producers, studio heads, no one should be going on hiatus this summer. You've had your hiatus, Hollywood.

This is note to the over 10,000 or more members of the WGA. It's time to tell all of you to tear up those picket signs and all of you to put a YES vote to end the strike and get back to work. This strike's been going on for 3 months and has been most disgusting of 3 months ever. I heard since that a deal had come through to end this strike. You've had your nerve to have the Golden Globe Awards be cancelled and not televised live and cut down to a news conference instead of the red carpet and big party. I've heard that Vanity Fair had cancelled their Oscar Party because of you and have other people who work in the studios and some businesses lose money and jobs by your stupidity and idiotic stubborness. I hope you realize what damage you members have already caused hopefully next time if this happens again. Don't bet on going on strike when I myself and others will criticize you members of the WGA how terrible you were at making the entertainment industry stop at standstill.

If the writers decide to continue their - what has become a - ridiculous strike through the ratification process, they need a serious reality check. They've already put thousands of people out of work. Do they really want to keep them out of work for another week and half?

I think taking the 10-12 additional days of strike time would be lazy and would serve no real purpose. Writers: Vote to end of the strike immediately, please.
