WGA vote ends strike and sends writers back to work

Strikeover_l The strike is officially over. On Tuesday, members of the Writers Guild of America voted to officially end their three-month-old strike, which began on Nov. 5; 92.5 percent of all votes cast were in favor of terminating the walkout, and writers are expected to return to work on Wednesday. Members will next vote by mail and at membership meetings on Feb. 25 to ratify their tentative three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

"Our membership has voted, and writers can go back to work," WGA West president Patric Verrone announced at a Beverly Hills press conference. "This was not a strike we wanted, but one we had to conduct in order to win jurisdiction and establish appropriate residuals for writing in new media and on the Internet. Those advances now give us a foothold in the digital age. Rather than being shut out of the future of content creation and delivery, writers will lead the way as TV migrates to the Internet and platforms for new media are developed."

A joint statement signed by the Hollywood CEOs was also released. "This is a day of relief and optimism for everyone in the entertainment industry," it said. "We can now all get back to work, with the assurance that we have concluded two groundbreaking labor agreements — with our directors and writers — that establish a partnership through which our business can grow and prosper in the new digital age."

YYYEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I was kind of hoping for a simple, non-bloated Oscar ceremony, but at least now the movies of 2009 might suck a little less. But seriously, I'm glad the writers can finally go back to work. The danger is thankfully over....for now.

KAH Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Office is coming back!!! :D

black mass Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

Sag said we scratched your back, now, well, you know, know the strike is over, hey, think god, I hope those poor Writers can eat prime rib off a gold plate then silver, I know one of the writers who worked on buffy and he was on strike but still made about 3G's a week from his old stuff, they make about 200,000 a year, the ones who striked, the pigs, everylast one of them should have been told not to come back, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Nicole - seminar Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

Finally.... can't wait for something new to watch on TV besides re-runs and reality shows!!

Mike Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

We get a The Daily Show.We get the Colbert Repor-t where Stephen doesn't interview three people in 30 minutes. I heard we get a new Saturday Night Live in 10 days which is either good or bad. We get all The Office and 30 Rock we can handle. I am warming up my TV and clearing my DVR.

Los Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:42 AM EST

OFFIIIICE!!!!

beem Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:26 AM EST

If only it had lasted two more weeks so the Oscars would have been ruined.

Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:54 AM EST

does that mean we get more lost? :)

kisha Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

Thank you.

Kev Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

Well, I guess we get new stuff for the next three years - - until the writers get their noses out of joint again. Let's see, which union is next: actors? directors? food services?

Tom Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

In reference to some above posts, Lost will supposedly add 5 more episodes to the 8 they've already done. The remaining 3 originally planned for this season will be added to next season.

Cane will not be back.

Winona Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Thanks!!!!

Nick'd Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Now this is some good news for a rainy day.

Jackie Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Well, the Directors and Writers Guilds are all done. Next is SAG (Screen Actors Guild).

cimagato Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Finally! Now how long do you think it'll take us to go back to complaining about how crappy their work is? I give us two weeks into the revived shows. Until then, viva writers!

Rob Grizzly Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Lost will have time to shoot 5 more episodes. I know it isn't the 16 that was planned, but at least they will get to complete their season! (take that, Heroes!) Some compressed storylines will find life in season 5.
woo hoo!

Bob Holstead Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Said it before, will say it again. Hollywood - both sides of this strike - owes us, the viewers, the rest of America, a full season. They've had their hiatus. They owe us the rest of the season that started in Fall '07 and they owe their crews 3 months of paychecks they probably miss more than the stars, producers, directors, and studio heads. They should work thru the summer, they've had their vacations.

John Drennan Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Suit Up! More 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Rules Of Engagment' please! :)

JohnT Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Unfortunately, many writers will be returning from the strike to jobs that no longer exist due to their shows being cancelled, postponed, or shuffled off into limbo status.

Chris Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Just bring on more Lost! That's all I have to say.

Booker Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

The TV season of 2007-2008.....OVER? Don't shows stop filming in April...if there is a season left, won't be much of one.

Janitor Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

Huzzah! Got new 30 Rock to look forward. The Office: we finally see what direction they were taking PB&J, Michael & Jan, and DwAndyGela. Plus they can finally stick a fork in the once proud/now sub-par Scrubs. Rejoice!

Kevo Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Hooray! Finally more epsiodes of The Office, 30 Rock, Cold Case, Without a Trace, How I met Your Mother, and more than 8 episodes of Lost! The writers have been sorely missed. Welcome back!

T Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I'm so glad this strike is over! When do I get to see more eps of my favorite L&O: SVU?! Write, people, write!

iheartcoachtaylor Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

Does this mean more episodes of Friday Night Lights? Clear eyes, full heart, can't lose!!

EF Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

I'm glad the strike is over. I read on TVGuide.com that 24 wouldn't be back until January of 09. That stinks!

EF Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

For anyone that's interested, tvguide.com has a list of which shows are coming back, how many episodes there will be and which shows got the ax.

Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

FINALLY! I hope you got what you wanted writers. Way to go on putting thousands of people out of work and screwing up the TV season! You are just so awesome.

Clayton Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Yay for more Lost and Pushing Daisies!

a Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

is Scrubs coming back? I didn't see it on the list.

EF Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Scrubs is coming back. There are four pre-strike episodes. Four more episodes will likely be made and they will either air on NBC or go straight to DVD.

Tracey Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Bring on more Lost and Yay! 30 Rock and The Odffice!!! Finally

Robert Mcginty Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST
