Chris Daughtry: No bad blood with 'American Idol' judges

Feb 11, 2008, 09:33 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: American Idol, Grammys, Music, Music Biz

Chrisdaughtry_grammys_l You'd think Chris Daughtry would get some major flack for the comment he made to Rolling Stone last month, claiming that American Idol is in a "state of decline," but the Idol alum says his relationship with the three judges who put him through to Hollywood remains cool. "I talked to Paula, Randy and Simon," Daughtry told EW.com at Clive Davis's pre-Grammys bash on Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton, "and honestly, every one of them said to me, 'Congratulations for sticking to your guns and having an opinion. Never apologize for that.'" Still, it's clear the brouhaha in the blogosphere has made him reconsider making such bold statements in the future. "My whole point was never anything negative toward the show," Daughtry explained. "I did two interviews that day, and you don't want to repeat yourself, but then you go back and think, Wow, I guess I should have said the same thing."

Daughtry added that he sees promise in this season's crop of contestants; he is especially jazzed about one "dude that could really do some damage." And while he didn't win American Idol or any Grammy awards Sunday night (he was up for four), the rocker remains one of the best-selling acts of the past year. "Last year, it was like [being] a freshman in high school who wants to hang out with the seniors," he said while surveying his surroundings at the party, which included a logjam of celebrities including Janet Jackson, Fergie, and Whitney Houston. "This year, we're still new to the game, but we feel like we're slowly but surely graduating to our senior year."

Seems that Daughtry *the man and the band* have been in alot of trouble lately taking others music. I think that now that this is out, others will fall in place. He never could write, as far as I have ever noticed. He was just used by the AI machine and his time is about up. Wait and watch, just a matter of time.

I'm searching for the names of the American Judges on the final show. Can you help me?

Madame Knights Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Oh my, Daughtry speaking ill of the ones who love him most, lmao.
That doesn't surprise me. He is so into himself and why... I just don't get it. He always says soemthing stupid but then jumps back with a real insincere "Sorry".
But that's just Chris Daughtry for you, a poor loser.
Selling records doesn't make you a winner, that too shall pass.

carmen Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

For god's sake. I can't believe the whiners upset with Chris D. for stating the obvious - the show's not as hot as it used to be, nor are voters' choices automatic shoo-ins for mass appeal.(Taylor Hicks, anyone?) That said, it still attracts talent, and some manage to break out. News flash folks: American Idol is a TV show, not a person. Why on earth such overwrought defense of it? It's a show, people.
Get a life.

There will always be people who try to interpret the words of others through their own eyes. When this happens it is one of two things. That they are not intelligent enough to reason the negatives and postitive or that they are antagonists who strive off conflicts. Daughtry, keep on doing what you are doing. I am sure that you have an reasonable explanation for what you said because it was you who said. I also know that there is no bad blood between yourself and the American Idol judges. Peace and Love!!!!

This is my first season of AOL so I'm not really knowlegable as many of your previous writers.First off I really enjoy it every week. Now for my question.I'm familiar with Paula Abdoul(singer/dancer/choreographer),but what are the other judges claim to fame? Thanks !!

Fenix Fri, Feb 29, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

The guy was honest. Brutally honest and it seems that the problem most people have is that he is not continuously kissing the rear end of AI voters. These would be the same voters that sent him home ridiculously early. He doesn't owe voters a thanks, he owes record buyers a thanks and we does that every timehe is honest and true to his own feelings and thoughts.

CHERYL R. Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

IT IS TRUE THAT AMERICAN IDOL HELPS THESE SINGERS GET FAME, BUT IN THE END WE ALL VOTE FOR THE WINNER, AND REGUARDLESS IT TAKES A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA TO CONTINUE BEING NO.1. CHIS HAS AN UNBELIEVABLE VOICE AND DESERVES TO BE WHERE HE IS. HE IS VERY SELF CONFIDENT, A GREAT QUALITY TO HAVE. YOU FIRST HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

The talent is always going to be out there waiting to be discovered. american idol is not on a decline...that will happen only when one of the judges or Ryan decide to leave the show. millions tune in each week to see the judges interaction as well as to watch the talent showcase of the young people.

CHRIS DAUGHTRY ROCKS - NUFF SAID!!

Seb Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Even if he did say that it is his wn mind. I am very disapointed this year and feel it is on its way out. It is now about those that "wanted" and felled at an attempt before. Its not the the should ahve beem american idol. Its the american idol, solid, non professionals etc.. What happened. Bye Bye american disaster...

Daughtry really turned me off with his comments. Ingrate. He should take a lesson from Carrie Underwood who never fails to thank Idol for her start. She's not kissing butt, its called "class." As for the state of decline -- if someone had 29 million dollars and now only has 27.7 million, are they "going broke"? Hardly.

WildKAT Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Waaay too much b.s. from people who don't read the entire article. Waaay too much negativity. Why read only the headlines and then write a hate post? Tells you how stupid people are. Daughtry has talent and he has proven that. His next CD most likely will be far superior to his freshman one. That is the way artists mature and progress. Every artist in the music mill will tell you the same thing. With the exception of Josh Groban whose glorious voice transcends even the worst material, he has never put out a bad album because he has the talent and support of top producers and the fan base to carry him on forever. Too bad the idiots at the Grammy's shine Josh on in favor of weak voiced no talents. Daughtry sings well and will survive despite the haters who post here.

Kay L Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

Do people really want a world where people watch what they say and mind their Ps and Qs all the time? Why can't a person just say whats on their mind, if you don't like it then don't listen. Our First Amendment is in enough peril, leave openly speaking persons alone. Who cares if Chris thinks he is cool, apparently he is. Whether you like him or not, he has made it in the biz.

Not a fan Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

Taylor Hicks was my choice and I am so disappointed that he chose to do his thing with his CD instead of listening to the sdvisors because his CD was/is NOT GOOD. So, if Chris is making it, let him, he obviously either took the advice or knew what was needed to become a hit. I also think he had some heavy duty backing from a talk show host, too. She told him she would help him out if needed after he was voted off of AI.

Kay Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Read the whole interview! He also talks about how it gave people a venue to see him and know who he is. And he's right that it doesn't matter if you win or not or were on the show once you're off then it's up to you. Look at Taylor and Katherine? They've been dropped by their labels. I can't believe he has to apologize for this. If AI producer's don't know it's in a state of decline then they're living in a fantasy world.

I am proud to have voted for Chris and I am still enjoying the CD. I think that his point is well taken--the more than AI focuses on people without talent and becomes a joke, the harder it is for really good talent to get a chance. And given the lack of success of the past two winners, the voting is obviously not reflecting true popularity--where are all of those people when it comes time to buy a CD? Chris' fans came through and still remain. Great that they got nominated for the Grammys, even though they didn't win.

Jane Laughrin Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

That year, Taylor Hicks was my fave, but his CD was a HUGE disappointment and he has no record deal to speak of. I've seen Daughtry live and will again next week, and he's amazing and he's getting all the praise that he deserves. AI gave him the exposure that he might not have had and that is a fact he needs to get past.

Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

That isn't all he said. Read the whole thing. He has made several off the cuff remarks. And no, he doesn't have to kiss our asses, but we don't have to buy his records either. Look what happened to Donna Summer when she said she didn't want gays buying her album. They stopped. And when is the last time she had a hit after that? Never. There is always room to be grateful. If someone gives you a gift, you say thank you. You don't say, "thanks but I know this comes from the discount rack in a state of decline."

mscisluv Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I don't get what the big deal is at all. He didn't even say anything truly negative. He said the show is in a "state of decline" which it is. The producers and the judges said as much after last season's lackluster finish.

PS Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Chris: your ego is bigger than your voice.
It wasn't very long ago you were a service writer at a car dealership, begging for a chance at Hollywood on AI.
Appriciate the show and the fans that were responsible for your exposure.
The reason you didn't WIN the AI title is because you turned into a pompous ass midway through the season.
Voters saw right through you.
Your look of dis-belief when you were voted off was priceless.

Dezarae Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I can't believe this guy!! He shows up for the A.I. auditions begging for a chance because no record company would give him a chance!! There's nothing original about him or his band! And yet he ends up getting an offer to sing for Fuel and when he turned it down he got his own deal. And w/o A.I. he would still be singing in bars for beer!! His band sounds like every other "rock" band these days. Rock is supposed to be dangerous, exciting, and not so clean cut! I personally can't tell the difference between him & his band and any of the other new bands that claim to be rock when their really nothing more than posers, there's nothing special about them, no originality, and certainly no staying power. This guy owes his 15 minutes to A.I. and should be kissing their asses and the asses of the people who voted for him!!!

jaime Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

They do this with all the dang idols. .. same drama happened with Kelly Clarkson!!! I still love them both. . .

For Sandra Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Why does Chris owe me an apology cause I voted for him?? That's stupid. He's talented, I voted for him. He doesn't need to kiss my feet, nor does he have to kiss AI's.
He simply needed a venue to showcase his talent and the rest is up to him.
Get a grip.

sandra jarrell Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Chris only downed AI because he thought he would win.Believe me, if he had he would still be singing it's praises. The guy owes the people who did vote for hin an apology, I wouldn't blame them if they never bought any of his music or concert tickets again.

Jenn Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

I love Chris, but if he weren't making money for the record company and AI, I don't think they'd be saying "hey, be honest." They don't care what you say as long as they're still getting cash and the idols are doing what they want them to. Take Kelly. Clive was practically finished with her when she made the record that she wanted, not what he wanted. So Chris will be OK for a while.

Ms Daisy Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

If it weren't for the exposure he got on AI, "Daughtry" would still be Chris the bar band singer.

tim Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

Who gives a crap about American Idol or this loser, really, pre-fabricating stars to get a guaranteed CD purchasing base is not what music is about, stop being sheep.

anon Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

When has Chris ever said "Thanks" to American Idol? I have never heard him say it once. I don't think it is ever cool for someone to go and slam the show that got you your fame and money in the first place. If you thought the show was such a loser, then why did you want to try out? Go ahead, if you are so good, and make it on your own, performing in club, hitting the circuit, etc. Carrie and Kellie Pickler has always been grateful for their opportunity. In my opinion, when you slam the show, you are slamming the fans that voted you to be where you are, pure and simple. The show is about fans voting for who they like. If you disrespect the show, you disrespect your fans.

moi Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Just how long does one have to say 'thanks to AI'? Once is enough. After that you can say whatever. Fame and success is all about being the flavor of the day. Both Daughtry and AI are enjoying their high right now and that's great. But someone or something will bump them off the ladder down the road. I would hope that they realize this and not take this wishy washy business too seriously.

Jade Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

I really wish ppl would stop getting their panties in a knot when someone expresses honesty, truth & ones view pts on something. I hate how here in america we all rather here sugar coated hold your hand lies than honesty. We rather hear I love everything & everyone aint life swell. Then the truth & opinions of ppl. Just cuz one was on Idol shouldnt mean they are a slave to it for life & must kiss idol butt & please everyone. I say more power to chris & i love ur honesty chris. Plz don't ever hold back ur honesty & please dont ever apologize for anything you say in the future. If ppl dont like what you say or cant handle what you say then thats there problem & somethings wrong w/ them. They are just one of those sugar coated lies loving ppl. You dont need those types. When you said Idol is on a decline & other stuff u were right. Ppl just don't wanna hear the truth & realize its the truth. Idol had to lose some its fire @ some pt. after 6+ seasons it was bound 2 happen sooner or later.

TT Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

Dissing the show that brought them fame is nothing new. Chris and other Idols say what they say to sound cool and to gain acceptance from their peers. Then they backtrack when they realize fans of the show are upset. Prediction: Chris will beg Idol to let him perform on the show when he's promoting his next record.
